SUMMARY:Gothic Opera presents: Die Rheinnixen
DESCRIPTION:Unconventional opera company Gothic Opera returns to Battersea Arts Centre this Halloween\, this time with the UK staged premiere of Die Rheinnixen (The Nixies of the Rhine)\, an unjustly neglected\, Romantic work by Jacques Offenbach. \nDie Rheinnixen\, which is Offenbach’s first take on grand opera\, encompasses the growing nationalism of its time\, as well as the genre’s fascination with the supernatural. Gothic Opera is delighted to be staging this horror story for the first time in the UK. \nIn the capable hands of the award-winning international stage director Max Hoehn\, the evocative crumbling architecture of Battersea Arts Centre’s Grand Hall will be transformed into the time of the Weimar Republic\, a period of nationalism and unease. \nIn a bold production that will speak to our current times\, Gothic Opera will be joined by exciting conductor Hannah von Wiehler\, who has a very busy career across Europe. Leon Haxby\, the young composer whose previous work for the company was praised in Opera magazine for its “haunting magic” and “compassionate insight\,” has created a new chamber orchestration of the opera for seven instruments. A cast of talented singers will bring the characters and story to life. \nDie Rheinnixen performance details:\n30th October\, 7.30pm\n31st October\, 7.30pm\n1st November\, 7.30pm\n2nd November\, 5.00pm \nSung in German with English surtitles.

DESCRIPTION:The story behind one of music’s most iconic guitars. \nVisit the Royal College of Music Museum as one of the most famous acoustic guitars in rock history — Kurt Cobain’s Martin D-18E — goes on display. \nThe exhibition explores Nirvana’s groundbreaking MTV Unplugged performance and also reunites the guitar with another piece of rock history: Cobain’s famous olive-green mohair cardigan. This marks the first time these two legendary items have been displayed together. \nThe Museum will be running a series of events alongside the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Jaromír 99: The Castle - Exhibition in London
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Franz Kafka’s The Castle through an open-air exhibition showcasing the expressive black & white prints of renowned Czech illustrator and musician Jaromír 99 created for David Zane Mairowitz’s comics adaptation. The exhibition\, curated by Lukáš Horký\, offers a non-linear exploration of Kafka’s enigmatic narrative. Each image is a visual portal into Kafka’s text\, inviting viewers to interpret and engage with its suggestive and elusive nature. The exhibition captures the essence of Kafka’s surreal universe from the solitary figure of K. with his pilgrim’s stick to the ethereal presence of the chateau looming in the clouds. \n\n  \nAbout Franz Kafka\nFranz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague\, and his name is a symbol of Prague’s German-language literature\, which artistically reflects the unique cultural and social atmosphere of centuries of coexistence among Czechs\, Germans\, and Jews in the Central European region. Kafka’s work resonates globally with its timelessness. His books mirror not only the uncertainty and variability of his time but\, above all\, his inner conflict\, giving his work a very specific character. \nKafka’s perception of societal changes at the turn of the twentieth century and his sensitivity as a person and writer make his creations timeless. We constantly return to his texts\, which warn us against falling into lethargy and urge us not to accept the absurdities of the era passively. However\, much more is to be found in his work\, which often depends on how the reader interprets and understands the text. \nFranz Kafka wrote several short stories and three novels—America\, The Trial\, and The Castle\, which remains unfinished. The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his death\, when he was just 41. \nAbout Jaromír 99\nJaromír 99\, whose real name is Jaromír Švejdík\, was born in 1963 in Czechoslovakia and moves between the worlds of comics and music. He is a composer\, singer\, guitarist\, the frontman of the Kafka Band\, and an artist. The series of prints created by Jaromír 99 in 2013 for a comic adaptation of the novel „The Castle“ are expressive black and white prints\, first exhibited in 2020 as part of the Franz Kafka Festival in Frýdlantsko. The exhibition in the castle brewery metaphorically illustrated the futile journey of the land surveyor K. to the castle\, which stands on a hill within sight of the installation location. \nOutdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy\n26 – 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY\nFree access 24/7

SUMMARY:Exclusive Opportunity: Race2Dinner Deconstructing Karen Screening in London
DESCRIPTION:Join us on for a transformative evening of uncompromising truth-telling\, dialogue\, and relationship-building that aims to open up challenging yet hopeful conversations around racism\, systems of oppression\, and white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing a screening and interactive discussion with documentary producers\, authors\, and founders of the Race2Dinner\, Regina Jackson and Saira Rao\, this will be an evening unlike others – direct\, at times difficult\, and not for the faint of heart.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will begin with a screening of their film Deconstructing Karen\, where we see the harmful and often dangerous effects of white women’s complicity in upholding white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis screening is an opportunity to reflect on our own behaviours and biases\, and to challenge ourselves to actively work towards dismantling the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm marginalised communities.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegina and Saira will also discuss their powerful and thought-provoking book White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better. This bestseller challenges white women to confront their own complicity in the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm communities of colour. A copy of the book will be included at this event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will culminate with providing participants with the opportunity to connect with one another and process what they experienced during the screening and conversation.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite everyone to come with an open mind and willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. We hope that this event will be the foundation for forming meaningful community relationships\, continued reflection and action towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.

SUMMARY:Vortex Temporum: Daniel Pioro\, Michael Morpurgo & London Sinfonietta
DESCRIPTION:This concert focuses on our perceptions of time\, through two very different yet complementary masterpieces. The London Sinfonietta and Daniel Pioro will perform Gérard Grisey’s Vortex Temporum\, a work that takes us through three time frames: ‘normal’\, human time\, the ‘expanded’ time of whales and the ‘compressed’ time of birds\, via this pioneering spectralist composer’s virtuoso imagination. This late masterwork fulfilled Grisey’s vision of a music that transfigures our experience of time. On a symphonic scale\, revealing dizzying dances and lavish harmonic language\, the music carries us on a journey through boundary-breaking sound-worlds. \nAntonio Vivaldi  The Four Seasons\nGérard Grisey  Vortex temporum \nDaniel Pioro  violin\nGeoffrey Paterson  conductor\nSir Michael Morpurgo  narrator\nLondon Sinfonietta
