SUMMARY:The Burden of Hate: Bridging the divide in unforgiving times
DESCRIPTION:The Forgiveness Project’s eighth Annual Lecture! \nOn the evening of Thursday\, 13 September at the beautiful Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill\, we will be holding our eighth Annual Lecture. \nWe are delighted to welcome the American author\, commentator and community organiser Sally Kohn to the UK. As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN\, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences and learning how to talk respectfully with people whose views she disagrees with passionately. \nSally Kohn will be exploring the epidemic of hate all around us – from internet trolls to school bullies\, from racist chants to homophobia – and what we can do to repair our humanity. \nSally’s recent book\, The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity\, investigates the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She talked with people from all around the world\, including many of The Forgiveness Project’s storytellers – Bassam Aramin\, Pardeep Kaleka\, Tony McAleer and Arno Michaelis – drawing surprising lessons from people who left hate behind. \nIn confronting her own shameful moments\, whether as a child bullying a classmate\, or today when she harbours deep partisan resentment\, Sally discovered\, ‘The opposite of hate is the beautiful and powerful reality of how we are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings. The opposite of hate is connection.’ \nTickets: £22 (£12 concessions – low income)\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 35 Powis Square\, W11 2AY\nTransport: Nearest underground stations: Notting Hill Gate or Westbourne Park \nThe Forgiveness Project is an award-winning charity working with real stories to explore how forgiveness\, empathy and sharing stories can be used to break cycles of harm\, transform relationships and restore hope.

SUMMARY:Launch of Black Cultural Activism Map
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Black Cultural Activism Map\, the first of a two-part series of events celebrating and connecting visions\, stories\, lessons and legacies of Black and Brown cultural resistance in the UK. \nThe Stuart Hall Foundation has commissioned young artists\, activists\, designers and researchers to explore moments of cultural resistance in the UK through individuals\, organisations and political interventions. \nThis launch event will bring together three of the commissioned arts collectives Skin Deep\, Voices that Shake! and RECLAIM for a dynamic afternoon of performances\, film screenings\, artistic presentations\, panel discussions\, singing for justice and more. \nTickets \n£10 Full price / £6 Concessions \nWe have limited number of free access tickets available\, get in touch with us to find out more. \n*We call this the Black Cultural Activism Map to honour the legacies of political blackness from which we have grown. We wish to be inclusive of black\, brown and diasporic peoples. We recognise that our work is part of an ongoing conversation. \nBlack Cultural Activism Map has been supported with funding from Arts Council England and Unbound Philanthropy. This event is supported by Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London. \nArtists and contributors \nSkin Deep is a London-based multimedia platform that amplifies voices of colour through the discussion of race and culture\, inspiring much needed conversations around themes that are usually misrepresented or depoliticised by the mainstream media. Skin Deep’s multimedia project is based around a print publication\, live events and interactive digital exhibition that responds to the theme: MOVEMENT(S). Through original nonfiction\, fiction\, poetry\, artwork and illustration Skin Deep have invited their contributors to think about\, through and around the political journeys of black and brown activists. \nVoices that Shake! is a collective that brings together young people\, artists and campaigners to develop creative responses to social injustice. Using a model of personal transformation and structural change\, Shake! challenges established imbalanced power-bases and re-imagine new infrastructures in opposition to capitalism and colonialism. Shake! will deliver a multimedia performance showcase (musical oral history\, storytelling\, spoken word\, film\, soundscapes and visual collage) collaboratively devised between four artist facilitators from SHAKE!. Featured artists include Sai Murray\, Dhelia Snoussi\, Globe Poets and Nawi Collective. \nRECLAIM is a youth leadership and social change organisation. It was set up in Manchester in 2007 to identify and support young leaders from an intensely pressurised community. Their work allows young people to develop their skills and potential and to build their pathway to make the world a better place for all. Through their commission RECLAIM will unveil the hidden cultures in Manchester merging art\, politics and creativity and look at how linking these mediums can say so much about the world we live in today. They will revisit\, reimagine and revive stories of black and brown activism from the past – stories from the north that have shaped the lives of many in Manchester communities today.

SUMMARY:Spatial Opera in the Dark CONFESSIONS
DESCRIPTION:Opera “Confessions” was inspired by an interest in spatial electronics\, in particular – the spatial acoustic sound and its impact upon the human imagination. Therefore\, the authors have decided to create a spatial opera in the dark\, focussing on the expansion of possibilities offered by the acoustic surroundings. The Christian idea of the seven deadly sins serves as the basis for the libretto. \nThe seven parts of the “Confessions” are concerned with the seven cardinal sins – lust\, gluttony\, greed\, sloth\, wrath\, envy\, pride. “Confessions” combines diverse ideas of creative experiments cherished by the authors for a long time: performance of music in the dark\, incorporation of other human senses (smell\, touch) along with alleged complete removal of the visual aspect. However\, in the opera\, the latter is in fact the most activated factor in the listener’s imagination – through abstract audio images and concrete pre-recorded sounds that produce strong imagery linked to feelings\, sensations or objects. \nIn 2016\, opera “Confessions” was awarded the Golden Stage Cross for the best music\, along with the Musical Nail of The Year award of the Lithuanian Composer’s Union. The opera was performed in various concert halls and theatres and at different festivals in Lithuania\, Sweden\, Germany and the Netherlands. \nConcept and composition – Spatial Opera Company: Jens Hedman (Sweden)\, Rūta Vitkauskaitė (Lithuania / UK)\, Åsa Nordgren (Sweden)\nPerformers: Åsa Nordgren (soprano\, soundobjects)\, Rūta Vitkauskaitė (violin\, soundobjects)\, Jens Hedman (electronics\, soundobjects)\nProducer OPEROMANIJA

SUMMARY:Lost Narratives: A Hidden World of Urbex Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Atlas Obscura for a talk on urban exploration — Urbex — and what it takes to photograph abandoned buildings all over the world. \nUrban Exploration has always been a popular pastime to rule breakers and renegades\, but with the advent of social media\, especially Instagram\, there has been a new rise in its visibility. Once only available to those who were willing to risk the dangers of entering decaying structures\, modern technology has made it possible for photographers to share what’s inside ruins around the world with the world. Viewing this practice through the eyes of an expert will help us uncover more about the compulsion to go off the beaten track and share these discoveries. \nThe talk will be given by urban explorerer and photographer Claire Alaxandra Powell\, and she’ll discuss how keeping secrets within the urbex community helps preserve these structures for the future\, and the history behind the places she’s photographed all over Europe. Claire herself has been hunting for ruins for the past decade in England\, Germany\, Italy\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, the United States\, and more\, and will bring this wealth of experience and knowledge to share. \nOur event will be hosted in the Asylum Chapel\, an 1824 chapel whose interior was ruined by an incendiary device during World War II. The interior\, almost entirely destroyed from the explosion\, remains in much the same state today.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:END OF! A musical about climate change
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to celebrate Lewisham’s Borough of Culture in 2022 with our most original show to date – a brand new musical about Climate Change. \nIt’s 50 years in the future\, and in a society ravaged by the effects of Climate Change\, two tribes are warring\nover limited resources. The Heart Tribe live off the land and worship the sun\, while the Eye Tribe\, live by the sea\nand worship the power of water. Perhaps they can find a way to work together – build a time machine – and\nwarn their ancestors of the world that awaits them unless Climate Change can be stopped…? \nThis highly entertaining – and thought provoking – show is a fast-moving\, musical extravaganza\, featuring\namazing designs\, original songs\, audience participation and lots of surprises. In these troubled times\, we\nbelieve it will send a message of hope – and change!

SUMMARY:The Werewolf + The Last Sorcerer
DESCRIPTION:Gothic Opera returns to the stage this Halloween with their first-ever double bill\, Le Loup-garou (The Werewolf) and Le dernier sorcier (The Last Sorcerer)\, which is taking place at the Round Chapel in Hackney. United by their supernatural\, fairytale-like themes and their subtly sinister but light-hearted character\, this pair of operas will invite the audience into an intricately crafted world full of mysterious magical creatures. The opera is sung in French with English subtitles and newly-written spoken dialogue in English. \n\n\n\nFresh from success in the Opera Production category at the Off-West End Awards (with their 2021 UK premiere of Gounod’s La Nonne sanglante)\, Gothic Opera is continuing its mission to open opera up to new audiences and to inspire people to come and experience rarely-heard operas in atmospheric\, evocative locations. This year’s performance promises to shed new light upon the unjustly neglected work of the nineteenth-century female composers Louise Bertin and Pauline Viardot. \n\n\n\nGothic Opera is working with some of the brightest upcoming singers in London to bring these operas to life in the UK for the very first time. They will be joined by a predominantly female creative team\, including stage directors Eleanor Burke\, part of the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker 2022 intake\, who will direct Le Loup-garou\, and Edwina Strobl\, who will direct Le dernier sorcier. The set and costume designer is award-winning Anna Kelsey. The operas will be conducted by musical director Juliane Gallant\, a member of Tapestry Opera’s inaugural Women in Musical Leadership Fellowship. \n\n\n\nFeaturing newly-written dialogue – which brings the operas up to date while responding to the humour of the original – and with a stellar creative team and cast of brilliant\, passionate musicians\, Gothic Opera’s 2022 Halloween production is set to achieve the highest artistic standards\, opening these neglected works up to a wider public. Challenging audiences to experience something brand new this Halloween.
