SUMMARY:Turning Earth - Ceramics Market in Leyton
DESCRIPTION:The much-loved Winter Ceramics Market will return to Turning Earth’s Leyton studio on Saturday 4th and 5th December 2021. More than 70 ceramicists will sell their work directly from the studio\, and there will be wheel-throwing and hand-building demos throughout the weekend – with the option for visitors to have a go too. \nA charity stall selling donated work will again raise money for charity Help Refugees. There’ll also be delicious Vietnamese Street food from Hanoi Ca Phe\, mulled wine and mince pies\, as well as live klezmer from members of the much-loved festival band The Turbans\, and folk music from Davey Green. Alongside the market\, a host of neighbouring artists\, photographers\, furniture makers and designers on the Argall Avenue industrial estate will open their doors so you can explore their studios. \nOne of the gifts of the pandemic has been in showing people what they most value\, which became strikingly apparent when so much of life was restricted. People tried crafts in more significant numbers than ever before during the lockdowns\, but the move online deprived everyone of the tactile experience of buying work directly from the maker. In what promises to be an inspiring reunion of makers and ceramics lovers\, you can expect to see pieces made with kitchen implements when our makers couldn’t leave their homes\, among the many creative ideas refined in lockdown. Like so many independent artisans\, ceramicists have suffered badly because so many outlets for their work have been closed over the past two years – buying independent at Christmas shoppers can help keep the craft alive.

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Haringey Christmas Ceramics Market
DESCRIPTION:Christmas Ceramics Market\nOn 18/19 December we will hold the inaugural Christmas Ceramics Market at the new Turning Earth ceramics centre in Haringey. The new studio will bring the Turning Earth model established in Hoxton and Leyton to North London for the very first time\, offering a gym-like monthly membership arrangement for people who want to take up ceramics as a serious hobby\, as well as introductory classes for beginners.\nDuring the celebratory Christmas market weekend\, 70 ceramicists from Turning Earth’s studios will sell their work\, and there will be wheel-throwing and hand-building demos throughout – with the option for visitors to have a go too.\nMakers will share their reflections on how the disruption of the pandemic has impacted their work and celebrate some of the positive things it has brought with it. The new Turning Earth centre was itself created in a rising tide of craft participation and in response to the increasing desire for people to live and stay local and invest in the communities on their doorsteps.\nA stall selling donated work will raise money for local charities. There’ll also be delicious Vietnamese Street food from Hanoi Ca Phe\, mulled wine and mince pies\, klezmer from The Turbans and carols from Davey Green.\nCome and buy last-minute Christmas presents\, and prepare to be inspired – who knows\, you may want to come back and get your hands in clay yourself.

SUMMARY:CRAFT SCHOOL: A SUMMER OF PLAYFUL MAKING
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition is a result of the first year of Craft School\, Yinka’s Challenge — a national programme for schools that challenges learners aged 5-16 to get making. Led by leading London-based artist Yinka Ilori\, children from across the country took part in a schools’ challenge to craft new work in response to the themes of play\, storytelling\, and empowerment. Underpinned by Make First\, the Craft’s Council’s craft pedagogy\, the challenge placed materials into the hands of young people to encourage ‘thinking through making’. \n\n\nAt Craft School\, visitors can see the winning work of learners and teachers on display\, alongside objects from the Crafts Council’s Collection. There will be opportunities for children and families to make\, play\, get hands-on with objects from the collection and take part in discussions around the importance of craft in classrooms. \n\n\nWith opportunities for craft learning rapidly disappearing from our schools\, Craft School is a celebration of the tenacity and creativity of teachers who carve out time and space for making in their classrooms against the odds. The work on display shouts from the rooftops about the joy of making and the importance of open-ended play with materials for children and young people. \nCraft School workshop programme \n\n3 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Drew Richards\n10 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Amy Leung\n17 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Katherine Smith\n24 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Liaqat Rasul

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Highgate Ceramics Market
DESCRIPTION:Turning Earth opens its fourth London ceramics centre  – this time in Highgate – with a weekend maker market on 15/16 October.  Nose around the beautifully renovated 1930s industrial building complete with a contemplative garden\, and browse work from a hundred of London’s up-and-coming ceramicists.\n \nWith regular visitors\, including celebrity chefs Nigella Lawson and Yotam Ottolenghi\, the Turning Earth market is in the vanguard of a maker movement that\, despite many recent shocks to small industry\, continues to grow.\n \nShow solidarity with local makers as they express their creativity in the face of the energy crisis and rub off some of the peace that comes with working with the calming medium of clay. As usual\, there’ll be street food and live Klezmer music\, and – inspired by the Spring’s #CookForUkraine campaign – this time\, they’ll sell specially donated wares to raise money for displaced children supported by UNICEF as part of  #MakeForUkraine.\n

SUMMARY:Craft Meets Memory in Echoes of Presence at London Craft Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:Blackdot Gallery proudly presents Echoes of Presence\, an exhibition curated for London Craft Week 2025\, bringing together 38 international artists and designers whose practices explore the deeply human instinct to hold\, preserve and translate emotion into material form. \nThrough metals\, jewellery\, objects\, textiles\, photography\, sculpture\, mixed media and installation\, the exhibition contemplates how crafted works can serve as vessels of memory — capturing fleeting moments\, hidden emotions\, and the intangible sense of human presence. Whether navigating personal loss\, fragmented belonging\, or the quiet rituals of daily life\, each artist contributes a distinctive voice to this shared conversation. \nFrom the poetic fragility of botanical cyanotypes\, to sculptural knitwear that questions the architecture of grief\, to experimental jewellery that blurs the line between adornment and artefact\, Echoes of Presence demonstrates the power of craft to shape absence into presence and to bridge past and future through making. \nThis year’s presentation also highlights the dialogue between tradition and modernity — celebrating both material heritage and the evolving language of contemporary craft. Visitors are invited to reflect on how we document personal histories and collective memory through the physical objects we create\, wear and hold close. \nEchoes of Presence is part of Blackdot Gallery’s ongoing mission to champion emerging voices in craft and design\, offering a platform for creative practices rooted in emotional\, social and cultural depth.
