SUMMARY:Nutcracker Extravaganza: The Classical Music Pod Live
DESCRIPTION:It’s a podcast….with live music…It’s the Classical Music Pod! Music\, chat\, and a splash of gin tasting. Presented by Classical PopUps at Stanley Halls\, come and dip in and out of not one\, but two versions of the Nutcracker. Presented by Classical PopUps. \nTo add to the excitement\, there will be the chance to sample Wardington’s Original Ludlow Dry Gin – the brand new edition\, in partnership with the Philharmonia Orchestra. Flavoured with Seville orange and cassia\, the ‘Philharmonia Gin’ is the perfect tipple for a cosy December evening! \nIn the Christmas of 1960 Jazz titan Duke Ellington released an album unlike anything he had recorded before. ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ re-arranged Tchaikovsky’s festive spectacular into a swinging soundscape full of humour that blended classical and jazz\, dance halls and concert halls\, tradition and innovation. Join the players of Classical PopUps and hosts of The Classical Music Pod for an evening of live music and a deep dive into what made the original ballet and the jazz update such enduring hits. \nMusicians this evening include members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and players from some of the most dazzling West End shows. \nThe Classical Music Pod bills itself as ‘the best classical music podcast produced in a Brixton bedroom’\, though this claim remains unverified. Hosted by Timmy Fisher and Sam Poppleton\, the pod blends a deep passion for classical music with an equally strong affection for punnery\, silliness and trivia. \nSince its launch in 2019\, the pod has explained avant- garde serialism using chocolate selection boxes\, compiled book recommendations from some of the world’s greatest performers and interviewed David Lammy MP about his time singing alongside future Brexiteers. You can listen\, like and subscribe to the boys through all the usual podcast portals and follow them on Twitter @ClassicalPod. \nhttp://www.classicalpopups.com

SUMMARY:Stephen John - A day in the life of a Classical Record Producer

SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Liam Byrne - Concert in London
DESCRIPTION:Concert in London – “Lessons for Lyra Viol” – Liam Byrne (viola de gamba)\nAt around the same time\, John Dowland was writing his famously beautiful music for solo lute. His contemporary Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger composed a collection of equally gorgeous\, subtle\, and elegant pieces for solo viola. Heard all too rarely today\, the repertoire is highly complex\, chordal and contrapuntal\, with Ferrabosco asking the player to tune his instrument in various non-standard ways to achieve unique resonances. As a result\, we often describe the viol as a bowed lute\, particularly in this writing style\, called playing lyra way or playing the lyra viol\, where this close relationship between the lute and viol is most apparent. \n \nThe Lyra viol’s bow is light and flexible\, and it does something halfway between plucking and singing\, like filling in the ink drawing of lute playing with strokes of delicate watercolour. In this program\, Liam Byrne intersperses selections from Ferrabosco’s 1609 collection of lyra viol lessons with some anonymous gems from unpublished manuscript sources\, as well as works by William Lawes\, Daniel Farrant\, and others. \n \nThe lyra viol is the ultimate unaccompanied repertoire for the viol. Introspective\, intimate\, and delicate\, it flourished in Britain throughout the 17th century. One of its more well-known proponents was the diarist Samuel Pepys\, who often writes of playing alone on his lyra viol before bed.

SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Ensemble Pro Victoria
DESCRIPTION:LIFEM 2021: Ensemble Pro Victoria\n“I Was Glad: Music of the English Baroque” \nJoint winners of the 2020 Young Ensemble Competition\, Ensemble Pro Victoria\, return for their winners’ recital. \nENSEMBLE PRO VICTORIA \nEnsemble Pro Victoria is one of the most refined young early music ensembles in Britain. Founded at Cambridge University in 2015 by Toby Ward (artistic director) and Humphrey Thompson (editor\, baritone)\, they focus on music from Tudor England\, the Spanish Golden Age and the early Baroque. Most often\, the group performs one-to-a-part\, bringing music to life through the beauty of solo singing instead of a choral approach. \n \nThe seven core members of the group were thrilled to win a joint-first prize in the London International Festival of Early Music Young Ensemble Competition 2020. With a programme of music from the Spanish Golden Age\, they are delighted to return to the London International Festival in 2021 to perform Baroque music from the English and French chapels royal. \nEPV enjoys a close relationship with Professor Magnus Williamson (Newcastle University) and the Tudor Partbooks project; road-testing reconstructions of fragmented works\, performing research using a replica Tudor choir book lectern and making the first recordings of recovered repertoire. \nRecent highlights have included a pared-down Bach St John Passion as part of the ensemble’s online series ‘Live from St Mary’s\, London’ and Tudor Music Afterlives. A filmed recital of Tudor music which lived on in secret after the reformation and Elizabethan Emblems. A programme tracking the effect of the reformation from Catholic polyphony to the height of the Jacobean verse anthem tradition. All supported and advised by William Hunt of Fretwork. \nEnsemble Pro Victoria’s first professional album\, The Robert Fayrfax Quincentenary on Scotland’s Gramophone award-winning classical label Delphian Records\, will be released in October 2021. It is the first recording made of some of the essential music of the Tudor Era; Henry VIII’s nuptial mass to Catherine of Aragon\, the seven surviving courtly songs featuring beautiful early English poetry\, and further reconstructions from the Eton Choirbook (c.1505)\, with celebrated lutenist Toby Carr.

SUMMARY:London Sinfonietta: Then & Now Composer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The immersive culmination of Writing the Future\, the London Sinfonietta’s innovative composer development scheme. \nInspired by ethnomusicologist and song collector Alan Lomax\, Luke Lewis’ The Echoes Return Slow sparks a conversation between distant\, lost voices and our collective presents. \nUsing special speech transcription software to draw out the natural musical cadences of historic recordings of speech and map them into melody\, this innovative process tells the sometimes sad\, sometimes joyful songs and tales of old miners\, speaking of national identity\, striking for better pay and conditions\, unemployment\, gender roles\, language and culture; all themes as relevant today as they were fifty or a hundred years ago. \nAlicia Jane Turner’s ‘Tell me when you get home is a theatrical and sensory piece for solo soprano and ensemble that explores gendered experiences of walking alone at night. The immersive staging\, influenced by Turner’s background in sound and lighting design\, incorporates elements of patriarchal representations of femininity in mythology and horror to take us on a subversive journey into our fear of the dark. \nEach composer will join us on-stage to discuss the musical ideas behind their work and how they’ve been influenced by issues affecting society today. \n– suitable for ages 18+\n– performance contains three instances of full lighting blackout\n– contains adult language and content some audiences may find disturbing\n– Trigger Warnings: Sexual assault\, violence

SUMMARY:London Sinfonietta: Night Shift with Cathy Milliken- Unique Audience Participation Concert
DESCRIPTION:“When my cue comes\, call me\, and I will answer.” Bottom\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream \nCathy Milliken’s new work takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s ‘fourth-wall’-breaking play A Midsummer Night’s Dream to blur the line between dreams and reality\, rehearsal and concert\, and audience and performer. Featuring an amateur choir alongside the London Sinfonietta and two soloists\, the piece will be determined by contributions from the audience\, who will also be equipped with a variety of percussion instruments to add a particular sonic layer to work. \n \nPart of the London Sinfonietta OPEN\, a series dedicated to involving the public as creators and performers\, is a concert experience. \nPart of the “Connect” series of commissions\, supported by the Arts Mentor Foundation Lucerne

Recommended by Classic FM and BBC Radio 3. \nThe UK’s first women and non-binary orchestra showcase string quartets were written by women in a converted postal sorting office. \nHer Ensemble brings together a diverse group of like-minded friends who are now some of the most in-demand players in the UK and abroad. \nFounder Ellie Consta was inspired to form Her Ensemble after realising that in 2019/20\, just 3.6% of the classical music pieces performed worldwide were written by women. \nTheir concert will showcase their repertoire: 45 minutes of extraordinary music written for strings. \nThis event features two short classical sets\, one early evening at 6 pm one late from 8 pm. All tickets to the late set include live jazz for the rest of the night.
