SUMMARY:Kensington + Chelsea Art Week 2020
DESCRIPTION:Kensington + Chelsea Art Week (KCAW) is delighted to announce that the third edition of the festival will be taking place 1-11 October 2020. Eleven days of public art festivities have been developed with community consultation\, with a diverse programme of events\, talks\, highlights\, installations and exhibits taking place throughout the Royal Borough. \nKCAW will present over a hundred participants\, including both emerging and world-class institutions and cultural practitioners\, to celebrate the artistic richness of the Borough. This year’s dynamic calendar of events will be the most extensive edition of KCAW to date. The programme includes murals and public artworks acknowledging the COVID-19 pandemic and paying tribute to the NHS. \nParticipants include the Design Museum\, The Great Exhibition Road Festival (GERF) collaboration with arts and science\, The Chelsea Theatre\, Kensington Town Hall\, Royal Society of Sculptors\, The Coronet Theatre\, Pavilion Hive in Notting Hill\, the Chelsea Arts Club\, White City Place\, and the Goldfinger Factory\, with many more to be announced. \nKCAW brings fresh dynamism to the area through its vibrant public art trails that also include self-guided tours designed to reveal hidden gems within food\, music theatre and history\, as well as exhibitions by hundreds of local galleries\, connecting eight culture zones in the Borough. It will be an opportunity to enjoy the area in greater depth and allow the public to discover and be guided through the extraordinary cultural cross-section of the historic area. The festival also coincides with National Poetry Day and there will be a chance to enjoy performances and readings as part of the programming. \nWith the cancellation of this year’s Frieze Art Fair\, KCAW will offer the capital a rich and diverse programme of cultural highlights for October. There has never been a more crucial time to support the vibrant art and culture of the capital and the festival has put social distancing measures in place to ensure public health and welfare and comply with government guidelines. These optimum safety measures will ensure a welcome opportunity for the public to support London’s artistic ventures.

SUMMARY:The Glass Door Sleep Out (or in) 2020
DESCRIPTION:Glass Door Homeless Charity is holding both a physical and virtual Sleep Out on 2 October this year to raise vital funds for individuals facing homelessness. \nThe event is due to take place at the Duke of York Square in Chelsea for the eighth year running\, if government guidance allows. Extra safety measures will allow participants to take part in this post-lockdown outdoor event\, which raised over £200\,000 last year to support people out of homelessness. \nGlass Door is also encouraging people to take part remotely in a location of their choosing\, whether that be a balcony\, a garden or the floor of their living room. \nFor the first time this year\, Glass Door will be bringing all participants together via a live stream of special guests and features throughout the night. The virtual elements will ensure participants can feel connected regardless of where they take part. \nActors Colin Firth and Jim Carter will be reading a poem and a bedtime story\, accessible to all participants and supporters as part of the virtual live-streamed event. Plus\, sleep specialist Dr Kat Lederle will offer her insights on why a good nights’ rest is so important\, and Nadia Mishchanka will host an early-morning yoga session. Additional guests will be announced closer to the date. The line-up will also feature interviews with event participants\, shelter guests and front-line staff.

DESCRIPTION:For their first project in the UK\, Aspan Gallery present a duo exhibition by two of Central Asia’s most prominent contemporary artists\, Almagul Menlibayeva and Yerbossyn Meldibekov.\nThe exhibition title\, Almagul Menlibayeva: It’s Easy to Be a Line / Yerbossyn Meldibekov: It’s Difficult to Be a Point\, comes from a phrase by an important Soviet avant-garde artist Sergey Kalmykov (1891-1967): “It’s difficult to be a point – it’s easy to be a line\, as everything in our world is moving”. Kalmykov moved in the 1930s from Moscow to Almaty\, where he was able to paint his imaginary parallel universes with fantastical creatures\, far removed from the Socialist Realist constraints imposed by the Soviet State. Kalmykov was an important historical figure\, and whilst under recognised\, the fact of his existence itself had a tremendous impact on the development of the contemporary art scene in Central Asia. \nReserve en

SUMMARY:Group Exhibition: Mother Art Prize 2020
DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring twenty short-listed artists of the Mother Art Prize 2020\, the only international prize for self-identifying women and non-binary visual artists with caring responsibilities.\nParticipating Artists:\nCassie Arnold \nHelen Benigson \nViolet Costello \nEmmeline de Mooij \nChristine De Vuono \nSabba Elahi \nMichelle Hartney \nMadison Hendry \nSadie Hennessy \nKatherine Lovett \nLauren Pisano \nEileen Reynolds \nLouise Richardson \nCarly Schmitt \nHolly Stevenson \nMarta Stysiak \nKim Walker \nEmma Wilson \nCoral Woodbury \nProcreate Project presents a group exhibition featuring 19 short-listed artists of the Mother Art Prize 2020\, the only international prize for self-identifying women and non-binary visual artists with caring responsibilities. \nThis platform aims to promote and support women artists who are mothers\, as well as drive the attention of the wider public to a broad-spectrum of themes that would otherwise be overlooked and devalued\, embracing the risk necessary to achieve a sea change in the perception and normalization of women’s artistic output as part of the cultural landscape. \nEstablished and curated by Procreate Project\, this prize’s edition puts together the most exciting leaders and organisations working to tackle the gender bias and intersectional issues in the art scene. \nFeaturing artists that work across a range of media\, the works were selected among 626 entries from 45 countries and judged by Niamh Coghlan (Director\, Richard Saltoun Gallery)\, Pauline Desouza (Director\, Diversity Art Forum)\, Elvira Dyangani Tse (Director\, The Showroom)\, Eva Langret (Artistic Director\, Frieze London)\, Claire Mander (Chair of Steering Committee UK Friends\, National Museum of Women in the Arts and Director\, the CoLAB) and Frances Morris (Director\, Tate Modern). \nThe winner of this year’s edition\, announced in May 2020\, is Helen Benigson. She will have an upcoming solo show in partnership with The Showroom as part of her award. Helen is followed by Violet Costello\, recipient of the Online Award\, with an online Solo Exhibition with Richard Saltoun Gallery\, and Eileen Reynold recipient of the International Award with an upcoming residency with Procreate Project and art material sponsored by Colart. \nTheir works raise questions around the representation and construction of the body\, religious identities\, sexualities and gender\, as well as reproductive technologies. \n“Procreate Project is a vitally important space that supports and champions artists who are carers\, (m)others or parents. Procreate Project understands the elastic fragility of what it means to make and show artwork\, at the same time as having competing caring responsibilities. At this very surreal and anxious time that we are all living through\, spaces like this are extremely rare and extra special\, so I am very grateful to Procreate Project and the Mother Art Prize for existing and supporting our work.” – Helen Benigson\, Mother Art Prize 2020 Winner \nThe exhibition is co-curated by Paola Lucente (director\, Procreate Project) and Claire Mander (Chair of Steering Committee UK Friends\, National Museum of Women in the Arts and Director\, the CoLAB).

SUMMARY:Arabian Moucharabieh
DESCRIPTION:Lawrie Shabibi present a series of recent paintings by Moroccan artist Mohamed Melehi.\nThe presentation includes eight artworks from his Moucharabieh (2020) series\, reminiscent of his bold graphic compositions from the early 1970’s\, where he produced the now-familiar wave motif in block colours\, yet now on a much grander scale. The motif of the wave is\, for Melehi\, all about movement and change. It is as much about electromagnetic radiation as it is about water\, and when vertical it becomes a flame. The Moucharabieh (2020) series strips away the waves to their bare essentials – they become all-over diagonal compositions – giving emphasis to the curved line\, hyper-graphism and a clear chromatic palette.

SUMMARY:Fighting On All Fronts: Women At War
DESCRIPTION:AntikBar\, the original vintage poster specialist\, will be holding an exhibition focusing on the role of women during World War Two featuring posters issued by both Allied and Axis powers\, in particular the UK\, USA\, USSR and some Nazi-occupied countries. Fighting On All Fronts: Women At War will be held at their gallery in Chelsea from International Women’s Day to Victory Day (8 March to 9 May). \n\n\n\nLabour shortages on the home front during WWII led to dramatic changes to the role of women in society. Jobs in factories\, agriculture\, nursing and other vital military and civilian industries that were previously seen as occupations mainly for men were now opened up to women. Posters played a big part in the publicity campaigns\, using patriotic appeal to encourage women to help win the war and secure victory by joining the workforce. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition will show how poster design and visual messaging varied in the different countries depending on the impact of war on the population and the roles of women in the conflict. Although they replaced men in the war production in all countries\, women’s day-to-day realities were very different. \n\n\n\nOne of the first countries to declare war on Nazi Germany\, Britain suffered extensive bombing during the Blitz\, as well as food shortages and rationing. The duties of women concentrated on providing support to the troops\, handling war logistics and health and safety measures. The imagery of British posters emphasises practical efforts rather than damage and destruction; the presence of the enemy is felt but not witnessed. In contrast\, the Soviet Union was partially occupied by Nazi troops and its population experienced war and violence first-hand. Women were engaged in battle\, abused by the occupants\, and subjected to bombing and severe food shortages. Reflecting this reality\, the poster messaging is explicit\, often violent and brutal\, and women are depicted directly fighting the enemy. In America daily life during the war was mostly affected by the rationing of food\, gasoline\, tyre and nylon stockings. The poster designs are often stylish and glamorous\, elevating participation in the war effort. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is free and will be open to the public during the gallery opening hours.

SUMMARY:The Most Magical concert. Tribute to John Williams and the famous saga
DESCRIPTION:А unique concert on May 28th will take place at 8 pm in an ancient church in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The evening programme includes the magical music from unforgettable fantasy films of Harry Potter performed by the extraordinary Mystery ensemble in an intimate & relaxing atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe soundtrack to the film was composed by John Williams. The composer wrote the music at his mansions in Los Angeles and Tanglewood and then recorded at Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst studios in London in September 2001. The film features many characteristic leitmotifs\, most of which were repeated in the second part of the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets franchise. The main composition\, “Hedwig’s Theme”\, is present in all films in a modified form. The soundtrack was released on October 30\, 2001\, on CD media. \n\n\n\nOn December 14\, 2001\, the soundtrack was certified gold in Canada (50\,000 units) and in January 2002 in Japan (100\,000 units). In 2002\, John Williams was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music for a Film but lost to Howard Shore\, who wrote the compositions for another fantasy film\, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. \n\n\n\nThe album became a success\, peaking at number 48 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top Soundtracks Chart. In the official UK charts\, the album was at number 19. \n\n\n\nProgramme*\nPrologue\nHedwig’s theme\nLetters from Hogwarts\nSunny Hogwarts\nThe Sorcerer’s stone\nNimbus 2000\nDeep high\nBaby Harry\nAutumn Hogwarts\nLeaving Hogwarts\nSpring Hogwarts\nHarry’s wondrous world \n\n\n\n*Concert programme is subject to change \n\n\n\nPerformers\nMystery Ensemble \n\n\n\nThis concert can be called mystical\, because the members of the ensemble always perform in masks. Remaining incognito\, the musicians do not distract the audience with their individuality\, thereby allowing them to completely immerse themselves in her majesty’s music.
