SUMMARY:Martin Hayes: live at KOKO
DESCRIPTION:Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music\, having founded the seminal Irish-American supergroup\, The Gloaming. The concept of Common Ground Ensemble\, his latest project\, emerged gradually in recent years while producing and curating concerts for various festivals\, often bringing together fresh collaborations and forming special ensembles for these events. \nMartin aimed to create an ensemble of musicians from different backgrounds who also have connections to Irish music – the common ground of their name. The line-up to compliment Martin on fiddle includes Cormac McCarthy (piano\, ‘Cottage Evolution’)\, Kate Ellis (cello\, Artistic Director of Crash Ensemble)\, Kyle Sanna (guitar\, a collaborator with Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile) and Brian Donnellan (bouzouki/harmonium/concertina\, and\, like Hayes\, an alumnus of The Tulla Céilí Band). \nCollectively\, they possess a wealth of talent spanning the worlds of traditional Irish music\, cutting-edge contemporary classical\, jazz improvisation and experimental music. In The Common Ground Ensembl\,e all of these genres are interwoven with the core elements of the tradition in a way that also gives each musician’s remarkable talents the space to shine. \nAfter sold-out shows at the Barbican\, EartH\, and Union Chapel\, Martin and the ensemble reunite for a one-off UK show to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in London. He adds\, “I want this to be the most fun I can have while I’m on stage.”

SUMMARY:Jasdeep Singh Degun: live at The Old Church
DESCRIPTION:Jasdeep Singh Degun stands out as one of the most innovative and awarded sitarists of his generation. Born in Leeds\, he masterfully blends Indian classical music with contemporary influences\, reinventing the horizons of the sitar. Trained under the guidance of Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE\, Jasdeep has mastered the gayaki ang technique\, a lyrical style that imitates the human voice\, giving his playing a unique expressive depth. \nIn recognition of his outstanding contributions\, Degun was awarded the Songlines Best Newcomer Award\, an Asian Achievers Award\, and made history as the first sitar player and British-Asian musician to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist award. \nSigned to Real World Records\, Jasdeep’s latest album Jogkauns was his first purely Indian classical album. Recorded with tabla player Harkiret Bahra\, Jogkauns offers a deeply immersive listening experience\, rooted in the Imdad-Khani gharana — the North Indian classical tradition in which Degun has trained. \nThe album is structured as a traditional Indian classical concert\, presenting the entirety of the music within a single raag — Raag Jogkauns\, a relatively modern evening raag that combines the moods of Raag Jog and Raag Malkauns. The result is a performance that unfolds organically\, balancing improvisation with careful attention to the arc of melody and rhythm. \nUsually seen on the sold-out stages of the Royal Festival Hall\, Barbican Centre\, and WOMAD Festival\, this performance is a rare opportunity to witness Jasdeep’s skill up close – in Stoke Newington’s intimate Old Church. \n  \nTraditional Musicians

SUMMARY:The Balanas Sisters: live at The Mildmay Club
DESCRIPTION:Having grown up in the small Latvian town of Dobele\, Kristine and Margarita Balanas moved to the UK in their teens. Since studying together at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, they have performed together at New York’s Carnegie Hall\, the Sydney Opera House\, Berlin Philharmonie\, and London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Barbican\, and Royal Festival Hall. \nThis performance\, their first since signing a record deal with Decca Classics\, is an intimate exploration of duet repertoire for violin and cello. Taking place in Newington Green’s iconic working people’s club The Mildmay Club\, the programme centres around compositions by Maurice Ravel and fellow Latvian Peteris Vasks\, complimented by new arrangements of George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi made specially for The Balanas Sisters. \nRavel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello features at the heart of the evening. Written in memoriam of Claude Debussy\, it finds common aesthetic ground with Vasks’ Castillo Interior\, a meditative and spiritual piece inspired by the writings of St Teresa of Ávila. It’s a journey of discovery that mirrors the sisters’ own path in music\, a theme of personal reflection which links together all the music in the programme at this one-off London show.

SUMMARY:1944: Home Fires | the idol and the thug
DESCRIPTION:Heartthrob Ivor Novello is the most famous songwriter of his day. He’s also in prison for fiddling with his petrol coupons. \n\n\n\nIvor’s forced to share a cell with 20-year-old Frankie Fraser\, the sadistic terror of London gangland. Fey matinee idol and psychopathic homophobe banged up together – what can possibly go wrong? The outcome will surprise you… \n\n\n\n🌈 Watch our trailer \n\n\n\nOn the way\, we get a fascinating light on the soft underbelly of the black market and the Blitz; a meditation on masculinity and ‘macho’; and perhaps a story of redemption and recovery? \n\n\n\nWith a cast of four singers and a trio of 2 saxophones and a harp\, this creates a unique sound world in which Novello’s own music plays a crucial\, climactic part. \n\n\n\n👥 A crowdfunded\, gay chamber opera. Find out how to help us \n\n\n\nTickets: £15\, £10 concessions (students\, 60+\, disabled persons) \n\n\n\nThe second performance\, after the world premiere on 3 September. \n\n\n\n🌈 Meet the team\n\n\n\nGay veterans Peter Scott–Presland and Robert Ely are writing 17 operas about gay history. For this premiere of the second opera in the cycle\, they’re joined by an array of young rising stars. Part of Tête-à-tête: The Opera Festival 2023 \n\n\n\n🎬 Watch last year’s opera for free – 1936: Fishing \n\n\n\n🥷 An (almost?) true story\n\n\n\nGangster Frankie Fraser was imprisoned for gruesome murders and alleged torture. His favourite pastime was pulling out teeth with a pair of pliers. \n\n\n\nHe claimed that he shared a cell with Ivor Novello\, who was the equivalent of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Elton John rolled into one. The gentle\, dreamy Ivor was convinced his theatre career was over\, and he had nothing to live for. \n\n\n\nYet Frankie had his own secret terror\, a threat that would reduce him to a shell of himself. Appallingly\, this was also a “conversion therapy” forced upon LGBTQ+ people. We were considered mentally ill at the time.
