SUMMARY:International Translation Day Editorial Slam with English PEN (In person)
DESCRIPTION:This participatory event\, in partnership with English PEN\, sees two editors take part in an ‘editorial slam’. Based on the ‘translation slam’ model\, it explores the collaborative acts of writing\, translating and editing by asking Sceptre Editorial Director Ansa Khan and Robina Pelham Burn to edit the same passage of text\, translated from the Arabic\, a language in which neither of them read. \nDuring the event\, they will see each other’s edits for the first time\, and with the text’s translator\, Nashwa Nasreldin\, who will chair the conversation\, discuss their choices and the rationales behind them. The audience\, including translators and fellow editors\, will have the chance to discuss their edits\, exploring the particular challenges and opportunities of editing work in translation; how to edit well when a text is deeply rooted in cultural\, linguistic\, or geographical specificity; and what editors must hold onto and what they must give up. \nInternational Translation Day (ITD) is celebrated annually on 30 September with a programme of events and workshops from English PEN\, taking place throughout September online and in person in London and Norwich. \nEnglish PEN is one of the world’s oldest human rights organisations\, championing the freedom to write and read. They are the founding centre of PEN International\, a worldwide writers’ association with 130 centres in more than 90 countries. DESCRIPTION:Join published and exhibited London artist and author Robert John for the launch of Dysmas Orbis\, a speculative urban fantasy set within a hidden parallel London. \nRobert John has spent years creating a surreal visual version of London through his photographic and digital art practice. His work has been exhibited and published\, including LDN Reimagined\, a traditionally published art book with Unicorn Publishing Group. Dysmas Orbis is the literary continuation of that visual world — taking the surreal London he created through images and developing it into a five-book speculative fiction series. \nThe novel explores identity\, belonging\, relationships\, displacement and what it means to be seen\, drawing on Robert’s own experiences of growing up in South London and his father’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. \nExpect a London that is recognisable but not quite right — spider trees\, flower lamps\, giant machines\, secret societies and a hidden world existing alongside our own. \nThe launch will include a Q & A\, reading from the novel and a look behind the creation of the book and its visual world. DESCRIPTION:Join historian Matt Houlbrook on a journey into a remarkable neighbourhood and the battle to define modern London. \nThroughout the 1920s and 1930s\, Seven Dials was one of London’s most diverse neighbourhoods\, home to migrant and working-class communities\, bohemian clubs and cafes. But business leaders and city planners had other ideas. \nBeginning with a rancorous libel trial of 1927\, in which a Sierra Leonean café owner and his wife confronted the racist newspaper that destroyed their business\, Matt’s tour of Seven Dials reveals the surprising history of this remarkable neighbourhood. He traces how tensions that simmered on the streets and finally exploded in court betrayed the politics of urban ‘improvement’ and the ‘colour bar’. Underlying the trial was a series of troubling questions that would define Britain in the twentieth century – about race\, class and the boundaries of belonging\, gentrification and the kind of city London would become. \nThe tour includes the site of long-forgotten cafes and queer nightclubs\, the tenements\, shops\, and workshops where the people of Seven Dials lived\, worked\, and played\, and modernist office blocks that were never built\, as well as St Giles Buildings (1925\, C Westcott Reeves and Alfred Rason) and the Cambridge Theatre (1930\, Wimperis\, Simpson\, and Guthrie). \nMatt Houlbrook is a writer\, historian\, and Professor of Cultural History at the University of Birmingham. DESCRIPTION:To coincide with the publication of his book\, John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture\, Charles Saumarez Smith will give a lunchtime talk on Vanbrugh’s extraordinary life: his upbringing; why he spent so much time in a French gaol; the writing of The Relapse and The Provoked Wife; and how he came to design Castle Howard with no previous experience of architecture. Saumarez Smith will give particular attention to Vanbrugh’s work as a theatrical impresario and the designer of the Queen’s Theatre\, Haymarket\, so disastrous as a venue for plays\, but where all of Handel’s early operas were performed. He will then describe Vanbrugh’s quarrel with the Duchess of Marlborough and his later work as an architect\, at King’s Weston\, Claremont\, Grimsthorpe\, Seaton Delaval and Stowe. In recent years\, Vanbrugh’s reputation as an architect has been eclipsed by his subordinate\, Nicholas Hawksmoor. He has served as Director of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery\, London\, as Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, as Professor of Architectural History at the Royal Academy of Arts\, and Chairman of The Royal Drawing School and The Watercolour World.
