SUMMARY:Book launch talk: 'Why can't you afford a home?' by Josh Ryan-Collins
DESCRIPTION:Join Josh Ryan-Collins\, Head of Research at UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)\, as he gives a talk on the launch of his latest book ‘Why can’t you afford a home?’. The event will be chaired by Guardian columnist and housing expert Dawn Foster. \nThroughout the western world\, a whole generation is being priced out of the housing market. While wages and incomes continue to stagnate for the majority\, house prices and rents remain staggeringly high. \nRyan-Collins argues that to understand this crisis\, we must examine a crucial paradox at the heart of modern capitalism. For anyone who wants to understand the housing affordability crisis and what we can do about it\, this talk is not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Foyles and Asia House Fiction Debut 2020: Deepa Anappara
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to introduce the first in our new series of Debut Fiction evenings at our flagship Charing Cross Road branch—focusing on some of the most hotly-anticipated novels and extraordinary new literary voices hitting bookshelves in 2020. \n“Djinn Patrol…is storytelling at its best.”—Anne Enright \nIn this first instalment of the year\, we are delighted to welcome author Deepa Anappara as she sits down with journalist and editor Sarah Shaffi to discuss her sprawling and superlative Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line—Winner of the Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize\, the Deborah Rogers Foundation Writers Award\, and the Bridport/Peggy Chapman-Andrews Award for a First Novel. \nInspired by real life journalism\, Anappara’s coming-of-age debut follows three children setting out on a road-trip to investigate the disappearance of their classmates—braving the bustling outskirts of the Indian cityscape\, and gaining their first glimpse of an uncompromising adult world. Anappara and Shaffi will discuss the realities of the harsh landscape in which the story is set\, and its stark\, truthful reflection of India and other major cities around the world today. She will also open up on her own writing process\, and the steps that led to the publication of her first novel. \nThe event will be followed by a Q&A and book signing\, and the opportunity to continue the conversation further before the space closes at 9pm. \nFor events in our Debut Fiction 2020 series\, we will be offering a small number of Free Early Bird Tickets. These are open to Foyalty card members\, students and unwaged customers and are strictly limited\, and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. If you are unsure whether you qualify for a free ticket\, please contact a member of the events team at events@foyles.co.uk. \nThis debut evening is held in partnership with Asia House. \nTickets: £14.99 Book & Ticket inc. a copy of Djinn Patrol… (RRP £14.99) / £4 Debut Night Standard / Limited FREE Early Bird tickets for Foyalty members\, Students\, and unwaged. When purchasing a Foyalty or Student ticket\, you’ll need to bring a valid in-date Student card or Foyalty card with you. \nVenue: The Auditorium – Level 6\, Foyles 107 Charing Cross Road*. \n*Please note that the auditorium at Foyles is fully accessible from the lifts located on the Ground Floor. \nPhotography © Liz Seabrook

SUMMARY:A New History of Theresienstadt with Dr Anna Hájková
DESCRIPTION:Dr Anna Hájková\, Associate Professor at the University of Warwick\, talks about her newly published book about Terezín / Theresienstadt. The Last Ghetto offers both a modern history of this Central European ghetto and the first in-depth analytical history of a prison society during the Holocaust. The event will be chaired by Francois Guesnet\, Professor of Modern Jewish History in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College\, London. \nTheresienstadt was operated by the Nazis between November 1941 and May 1945 as a transit ghetto for Central and Western European Jews before their deportation for murder in the East. Today\, Theresienstadt is best known for the Nazi propaganda of the International Red Cross visit\, cultural life\, and children. But these aspects explain little what defined the lives of its 140\,000 inmates. \nThe prison society of Terezín produced its own social hierarchies under which even small differences among prisoners decided their fate. During the three and a half years of the camp’s existence\, prisoners created their own culture and habits\, bonded\, fell in love\, and forged new families. Based on extensive archival research in nine languages and on empathetic reading of victim testimonies\, The Last Ghetto casts light on human society works in extremis. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with JW3. \nOnline via Zoom\, free event\, reservation necessary: http://bit.ly/Theresienstadt-booking\nA Zoom link to join this event will be included in the confirmation email upon booking.\nMore info: http://bit.ly/Theresienstadt-more-info

SUMMARY:Luke Wright: The Ballad Seller - Poetry Show
DESCRIPTION:Luke Wright\, winner of Best Spoken Word Performer at May’s 2021 Saboteur Awards\, has based his 11th full-length poetry show on bawdy Georgian street ballads and takes it to London’s Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 14 July as part of an extensive UK tour. The show will also celebrate the limited edition book of the same name\, which features illustrations by The Guardian’s chief political cartoonist Martin Rowson. \nBack in Georgian times\, we got all our news from poetry. Before newspapers\, broadcasts or the internet\, ballad sellers would hawk broadside ballads on street corners for a penny. Scandalous affairs\, grisly crimes\, and colourful characters were brought to life in rhyming verse long before the first tabloid was printed. \nWright\, hailed by The Independent as ‘One of the funniest and most brilliant poets of his generation\, has rewritten the very best of these stories for the modern ear. So take a trip through Drury Lane gin shops with the Boxing Baroness; filch oysters by the dozen with celebrated gormandizer (glutton) Dando\, and escape the Bull Ring with Jemmy the Rockman. Expect scandal\, excess\, and beautiful\, flawed humanity. \nLuke says: ‘These days\, we associate the word ‘ballad’ with a kind of slow\, syrupy song\, but traditionally it meant a narrative poem or song. For hundreds of years\, ballads were the backbone of the average Briton’s cultural experience. By the 18th century\, the most gossipy\, salacious news stories were written as ballads and sold in their thousands. Frankly\, the quality of the verse was pretty awful\, but the characters brilliant. In this show\, I’ve brought those characters to life by extending the ballads and giving their stories space to breathe.’ \nLuke Wright is one of Britain’s top stand-up poets. Flamboyant\, political and riotously funny\, Wright’s inventive shows are enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide every year. Praised by Patti Smith for his ‘cool poems’\, he is the author of three full collections\, three poetry pamphlets\, and three verse plays. He has won a Fringe First\, a Stage Award for Acting Excellence\, and three Saboteur Awards. The Guardian said\, ‘His performances rumble with rage\, passion and humour\, peppered with brilliantly smart observation’. \nHe is a regular tour support for John Cooper Clarke and MC for The Libertines (frontman Carl Barât is a big fan\, describing him as ‘One of the greats. A poetic pugilist was recently dubbed ‘the bard of lockdown’ by The Daily Telegraph after his marathon stint of 100 consecutive nights of online shows. \nThe Ballad Seller will tour throughout 2021. Luke is also touring his third verse play The Remains of Logan Dankworth and his newest collection\, Come! Come on! Meet me!. \nhttp://www.lukewright.co.uk \nLondon listings info:\nLuke Wright: The Ballad Seller\nMulti-award-winning poet updates the scandalous\, bawdy and colourful Georgian ballad storytelling style for the modern ear in his eleventh full-length poetry show.\nLondon Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club\, 42-44 Pollard Row E2 6NB\n14 July £12 7.30 pm 0207 739 7170 http://www.workersplaytime.net

SUMMARY:New Czech Fiction - PETRA HŮLOVÁ & KATEŘINA TUČKOVÁ
DESCRIPTION:Czech authors Petra Hůlová and Kateřina Tučková discuss their recent novels The Movement and Gerta with their English-language translators Alex Zucker and Véronique Firkusny. How do authors decide what to write about and how to write it\, and how do translators (writers\, too) reflect those decisions in their work? Join the Czech Center New York and Czech Center London for a one-hour conversation about these questions and more\, including the challenges and joys of bringing Czech fiction to English-language readers. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \nPETRA HŮLOVÁ: THE MOVEMENT\nIn this utopia\, the feminist Movement has been successful\, and women rule the world. Men are trained at reeducation facilities to accept the new normal in this futuristic satire challenging our sexual norms. The Movement’s founding ideology emphasizes that women should be valued for their inner qualities and not for their physical attributes. As a result\, men have been forbidden to be attracted to women based on their bodies. While some continue unreformed\, many submit–or are sent by wives and daughters–to the Institute for internment and reeducation. Our narrator\, an unapologetic guard at one of these reeducation facilities\, describes how the Movement started\, her journey\, and what happens when a program fails. She is convinced the Movement is nearing its final victory–a time when everybody will fall in line with its ideals. Outspoken\, ambiguous\, and terrifying\, this socio-critical satire of our sexual norms sets the reader firmly outside of their comfort zone. \nKATEŘINA TUČKOVÁ: GERTA\nThe award-winning novel by Czech author Kateřina Tučková―her first to be translated into English―is about one woman’s fate and the pursuit of forgiveness in a divided postwar world. 1945. Allied forces liberated Nazi-occupied Brno\, Moravia. For Gerta Schnirch\, daughter of a Czech mother and a German father aligned with Hitler\, it’s not deliverance; it’s a sentence. She has been branded an enemy of the state. Caught in the changing tides of a war that shattered her family―and her innocence―Gerta must obey the official order: she\, along with all ethnic Germans\, is to be expelled from Czechoslovakia. With nothing but the clothes on her back and an infant daughter\, she’s herded among thousands\, driven from the only home she’s ever known. But the injustice only makes Gerta stronger\, more empowered\, and more resolved to seek justice. Her journey is a relentless quest for seemingly impossible forgiveness. And one day\, she will return. Spanning decades and generations\, Kateřina Tučková’s breathtaking novel illuminates a long-neglected episode in Czech history. One of exclusion and prejudice\, of collective shame versus personal guilt\, all through the eyes of a charismatic woman whose courage will affect all the lives she’s touched. Especially that of the daughter she loved\, fought for\, shielded\, and would come to inspire. \nPetra Hůlová is a fiction writer and the recipient of several literary awards\, including Czechia’s highest academic honours: the Magnesia Litera\, the Josef Škvorecký Prize\, and the Jiří Orten Prize. She studied language\, culture\, and anthropology at universities in Prague\, Ulan Bator\, and New York and was a Fulbright scholar in the United States. Her first novel\, All This Belongs to Me (2002\, Paměť mojí babičce)\, won the Magnesia Litera Award for Discovery of the Year; the English translation by Alex Zucker won the ALTA National Translation Award. Her fourth novel\, Three Plastic Rooms (2006\, Umělohmotný třípokoj)\, won the Jiří Orten Prize for the best work of prose or poetry by an author thirty or under; Alex Zucker’s English translation received a PEN Translates Award from English PEN. Hůlová’s fifth novel\, Taiga Station (2008\, Stanice Tajga)\, won the Josef Škvorecký Prize. A total of ten novels and two plays of hers have been translated into more than ten languages. Fox Eyes (Liščí oči)\, her latest book\, is her first work for children. She lives in Prague. More at https://argo.cz/foreign-rights/petra-hulova. \nKateřina Tučková is a Czech playwright\, publicist\, biographer\, art historian\, exhibition curator\, and bestselling author of Gerta and The Žítková Goddesses. She has won several literary awards\, including the Magnesia Litera Award (for both Gerta and The Žítková Goddesses)\, the Brno City Award for literature\, the Josef Škvorecký Award\, and the Czech Bestseller Award. Kateřina is also the recipient of the Freedom\, Democracy\, and Human Rights Award by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Premio Libro d’Europa at the Book Fair in Salerno Italy. Between 2015 and 2018\, she was the founder and first president of the Meeting Brno festival\, focusing on international and intercultural dialogue. Kateřina Tučková currently lives in Prague and Brno\, Czech Republic. Her books have been translated into seventeen languages. Gerta is her first to be translated into English. In 2021\, Tučková’s latest novel\, Bílá Voda\, will be published in Czech. The English translation of The Last Goddess (The Žítková Goddesses) is expected to publish in Spring 2022.¨More at http://www.katerina-tuckova.cz/en/. \n  \nSunday 17 October 2021\, at 6 PM GMT on Zoom\nRegister: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/new-czech-fiction-tickets-183003928677

SUMMARY:Indie Bookshop Phlox Celebrates International Women's Day in Connaught Village
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate IWD\, Connaught Village invites indie bookshop Phlox Books to pop up over March with women-focused books and female author events featuring the likes of Abi Daré and Mona Arshi to showcase the female experience in literary form. \nFounder of East London independent bookshop Phlox Books\, Aimée Madill has proudly been serving ‘Books. Booze. Coffee’ since 2017 and is no stranger to pop-up bookstores in her role as ‘go-to’ for festival bookshops. On this occasion\, Aimée has taken the opportunity IWD has presented to platform female authors and host a series of events in Connaught Village. Located at 12 Connaught Street\, the pop-up will operate as a bookshop and events space where notable authors will discuss their work. \nAt street view\, the front of the bookstore will feature hand-painted illustrations by female illustrator Alezeia Fidalgo who has a penchant for books and creating original illustrations to accompany the text. \nThe first event at Phlox Connaught Village will take place on the day itself\, Tuesday 8th March\, with award-winning author\, Abi Daré\, whose debut novel ‘The Girl With the Louding Voice’ was published in 2020\, longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize and chosen as a BBC Radio 4 Book at Bedtime. Abi will be joined by Mona Arshi\, a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 and poet whose debut collection of poems received the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and appeared in the Poems on the Underground series. Arshi will be talking about her debut novel\, ‘Somebody Loves You’ (published 2021). Events will continue throughout March with a selection of authors handpicked by Aimée. Each event will see a discussion between the authors and an open forum for the audience to explore different themes of the female experience. \nEach event promises guests a deep dive into each woman’s creative process and an excellent chance to explore their views on IWD\, the female gaze\, and their respective literary futures. Wine will be served\, provided by Connaught Cellars\, in line with Phlox Book’s mantra of making bookshops relaxed\, social spaces. \nTickets for the event are free\, but registration is necessary\, although some spaces will be reserved for walk-ins. SUMMARY:ROSL Art Talk: Muse by Ruth Millington + Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Making of Muse \nMeet Editor Mireille Harper\, Illustrator Dina Razin and Author Ruth Millington as they discuss the story behind Muse (2022\, Vintage Publishing). From selecting the muses to illustrating each of them\, discover how Muse collaborated from start to finish. \nThe perception of the muse is that of a passive\, powerless model\, at the mercy of an influential and older artist. But is this trope a romanticised myth? Far from posing silently\, muses have brought emotional support\, intellectual energy\, career-changing creativity and practical help to artists. \nMuse tells the true stories of the incredible muses who have inspired art history’s masterpieces. From Leonardo da Vinci’s studio to the covers of Vogue\, art historian\, critic\, and writer Ruth Millington uncovers the remarkable role of muses in some of art history’s most well-known and significant works. Delving into the real-life relationships that models have held with the artists who immortalised them\, it will expose the influential and active part they have played and deconstruct reductive stereotypes\, reframing the muse as a momentous and empowered agent of art history. \nThis event is in partnership with Square Peg and Vintage Publishing. \nPreorder a copy of Muse (10% off RRP\, £14.99) signed by the author Ruth Millington and illustrator Dina Razin when you buy your event + book ticket – this can be collected upon arrival. \nImage Credit 1: Muse (2022\, Vintage Publishing) book cover illustration by Dina Razin \nThis event is hosted as part of ROSL ARTS Muse series:\nMuse: The Exhibition\, in partnership with Square Peg\, Vintage Publishing and Sotheby’s Institute of Art\nMuse by Ruth Millington is published by Vintage Publishing (07/04/22)

SUMMARY:The Poetry Brothel: Everything Daylight Cannot Bear
DESCRIPTION:You stand in a dark room\, swirling the ice in an empty glass\, wondering if the frosty feeling in your heart will ever thaw. After months of isolation\, you have returned to the world but still\, find yourself withdrawing. A shadowy silhouette shrouded in purple light approaches you. \nTheir voice is soft and low; the velvet grace of the words\, the transcendent covenant\, is just a sketch of the things to come. Your pulse quickens\, and the breath catches on your lips. For a fee\, any of the creatures of the poetry brothel will bequeath you a poetic slice of their soul. \nThe Poetry Brothel is an international sensation that began in New York and has spread across the globe. The London chapter first opened its velvet curtains six years ago and returns with a tour de force of performers. The Poetry Brothel has rebellion in its heart\, where the strange\, the misfits\, the underdogs mingle together. All are welcomed regardless of creed and class. \nThe Poetry Brothel is an immersive and extraordinary show. Reclaiming poetry from dusty classrooms\, exam papers and ivory towers\, we aim to return to the origins of poetry performance\, the ancient rituals\, ceremonies\, and chants that uplift and revitalize our communities. Presenting a rotating cast of “poetry whores”\, each operating within a carefully constructed character\, catering for a wide variety of poetic appetites. For a lovely fee\, you can partake in an intimate one-on-one poetry performance\, where the intimacy of words is for you alone to savour.

SUMMARY:Bianca Bellová in conversation with writer Glen James Brown
DESCRIPTION:Bianca Bellová in conversation with Glen James Brown to celebrate the launch of The Lake. Followed by a drink reception and book signing. \n\n\n\nAbout this event \n\n\n\nA winner of the 2017 EU Prize for Literature\, writer Bianca Bellová discusses her highly topical book The Lake with Glen James Brown\, the Portico and Orwell Prize-shortlisted author of Ironopolis\, to celebrate the book’s English-language publication by Parthian Books. \n\n\n\nSet in a fictitious country with references to a past Soviet occupation and presenting a post-apocalyptic future of complete climate collapse\, The Lake is a powerful and touching story of a young boy who fights his way out of a harsh environment as he searches for his mother. In discussing her inspirations\, her experiences growing up in the Eastern Bloc states pre-1989\, her tendency to place her characters into extreme situations and the book’s terrifyingly real parallels with the possible aftermath of war in Ukraine\, Bellová explores her universal story\, which has been translated into twenty languages. \n\n\n\nBIANCA BELLOVÁ: THE LAKE \n\n\n\nTranslated by Alex Zucker \n\n\n\nA fishing village at the end of the world. A lake that is drying up and\, ominously\, pushing out its banks. The men have vodka\, the women troubles\, the children eczema to scratch at. Born into this unforgiving environment\, Nami\, a young boy\, embarks on a journey with nothing but a bundle of nerves\, a coat that was once his grandfather’s and the vague idea of searching for his mother\, who disappeared from his life at a young age. To uncover the greatest mystery of his life\, he must sail across and walk around the lake and finally dive to its bottom. \n\n\n\nParthian Books\, 1 April 2022\, ISBN: 978-1-913640-52-1 \n\n\n\n‘The fresh water of Czech literature’ – Hospodářské noviny \n\n\n\n‘One of the most remarkable books of the last years.’ – Mladá fronta Dnes \n\n\n\n‘A criticism of the Soviet Union\, of extinction\, of the modern world. SUMMARY:Highgate Festival author talk Carmel McConnell MBE "Change Activist: Make Big Things Happen Fast".
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Highgate Festival\, inspirational author and charity founder Carmel McConnell MBE\, will be giving an in-person and online talk about Change Activism\, how each one of us should become “a bit brave”\, not wait for politicians to sort the world’s problems out (e.g. climate change\, food poverty)\, but take action in our personal or work lives in line with our values. Drawing on her extraordinary life (as a Greenham Common protestor\, broadband pioneer\, entrepreneur and founder of children’s food charity Magic Breakfast) and the wisdom of global change leaders (e.g. Big Issue co-founder Lord John Bird and Kenyan education leader Qabale Duba)\, Carmel will energise and motivate the audience to explore their own change activist potential.
