SUMMARY:Launch of Black Cultural Activism Map
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Black Cultural Activism Map\, the first of a two-part series of events celebrating and connecting visions\, stories\, lessons and legacies of Black and Brown cultural resistance in the UK. \nThe Stuart Hall Foundation has commissioned young artists\, activists\, designers and researchers to explore moments of cultural resistance in the UK through individuals\, organisations and political interventions. \nThis launch event will bring together three of the commissioned arts collectives Skin Deep\, Voices that Shake! and RECLAIM for a dynamic afternoon of performances\, film screenings\, artistic presentations\, panel discussions\, singing for justice and more. \nTickets \n£10 Full price / £6 Concessions \nWe have limited number of free access tickets available\, get in touch with us to find out more. \n*We call this the Black Cultural Activism Map to honour the legacies of political blackness from which we have grown. We wish to be inclusive of black\, brown and diasporic peoples. We recognise that our work is part of an ongoing conversation. \nBlack Cultural Activism Map has been supported with funding from Arts Council England and Unbound Philanthropy. This event is supported by Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London. \nArtists and contributors \nSkin Deep is a London-based multimedia platform that amplifies voices of colour through the discussion of race and culture\, inspiring much needed conversations around themes that are usually misrepresented or depoliticised by the mainstream media. Skin Deep’s multimedia project is based around a print publication\, live events and interactive digital exhibition that responds to the theme: MOVEMENT(S). Through original nonfiction\, fiction\, poetry\, artwork and illustration Skin Deep have invited their contributors to think about\, through and around the political journeys of black and brown activists. \nVoices that Shake! is a collective that brings together young people\, artists and campaigners to develop creative responses to social injustice. Using a model of personal transformation and structural change\, Shake! challenges established imbalanced power-bases and re-imagine new infrastructures in opposition to capitalism and colonialism. Shake! will deliver a multimedia performance showcase (musical oral history\, storytelling\, spoken word\, film\, soundscapes and visual collage) collaboratively devised between four artist facilitators from SHAKE!. Featured artists include Sai Murray\, Dhelia Snoussi\, Globe Poets and Nawi Collective. \nRECLAIM is a youth leadership and social change organisation. It was set up in Manchester in 2007 to identify and support young leaders from an intensely pressurised community. Their work allows young people to develop their skills and potential and to build their pathway to make the world a better place for all. Through their commission RECLAIM will unveil the hidden cultures in Manchester merging art\, politics and creativity and look at how linking these mediums can say so much about the world we live in today. They will revisit\, reimagine and revive stories of black and brown activism from the past – stories from the north that have shaped the lives of many in Manchester communities today.

SUMMARY:Benin City\, Burning
DESCRIPTION:In February 1897\, British troops launched a ‘Punitive Expedition’ on the Kingdom of Benin\, swiftly and violently destroying much of Benin City and pillaging thousands of royal artworks and sacred objects. Many of the Benin Bronzes are now in the British Museum; the rest are scattered across Europe and America in private collections and museums. The Edo people have requested these artefacts back but most of the museums have staunchly refused. \nPoet Inua Ellams\, who hails from Benin City in Nigeria\, will read his poem sequence Fuck/Empire\, about one such artefact\, a tusk\, now housed at the Manchester Museum. He will then be joined by Nigerian artist Victor Ehikhamenor\, Pitt Rivers Museum Curator and author of The Brutish Museums Dan Hicks and Manchester Museum Director Esme Ward in conversation with writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch to discuss the history\, the legacy and the thorny issue of restitution. \nIn partnership with Penned in the Margins. \n— \nVictor Ehikhamenor is an artist\, photographer\, and writer born in Edo State\, Nigeria\, whose politically motivated works are influenced by the duality of African traditional religion and the interception of Western beliefs\, memories and nostalgia. He has had numerous solo art exhibitions across the world and is a Trustee of the proposed Edo Museum of West African Art. \nInua Ellams is a Nigerian-born\, UK-based poet\, playwright and performer who has written for the Royal Shakespeare Company\, the National Theatre and the BBC. His latest play was an adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters set in Nigeria\, staged at the National Theatre. The Actual his fifth poetry release\, and first full collection was published in 2020 by Penned in the Margins. \nDan Hicks is Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford and Curator at the Pitt Rivers Museum. His award-winning research focuses on the restitution of African cultural heritage from Euro-American collections\, focusing on the place of ideas of cultural whiteness in ongoing histories of colonial violence. His most recent book is The Brutish Museums. \nAfua Hirsch is a writer\, broadcaster and former barrister. She is a columnist for The Guardian\, writes for magazines including VOGUE\, Time and National Geographic and her book Brit(ish): On Race\, Identity and Belonging was a Sunday Times bestseller. Her documentaries have included African Artand Enslaved and she has worked in development in West Africa and in international human rights law at the bar. \nEsme Ward is Director of Manchester Museum and the first woman to hold the role in its 125 year history. Prior to this\, she was Head of Learning Engagement at Manchester Museum and the Whitworth. Together with Manchester Literature Festival\, she commissioned Inua Ellams’ poetry sequence responding to the Benin Tusk in the Manchester’s Museum’s collection. \nPenned in the Margins is an award-winning small arts organisation producing new work live\, in print and online. \nInua Ellams’ The Actual can be ordered from Penned in the Margins \nDan Hicks’ The Brutish Museum can be ordered from Pluto Press with a discount which you’ll receive you’re your event ticket purchase. \nN.B. This is an online event. You will be sent a viewing link and password with your booking confirmation. The event will be available to watch afterwards with a new link\, which you’ll receive after the event.

SUMMARY:We Gather – Craft Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Gather – Craft Exhibition featuring five female makers of Black and Asian Heritage\nNew Crafts Council exhibition We Gather features five female makers of Black and Asian heritage whose work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value\, 17 November 2021 – 5 February 2022 \nWe Gather exhibition opens at the Crafts Council Gallery on 17 November and features five female Black and Asian heritage artists. Whilst their chosen materials and disciplines vary\, their work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value. The makers are Shaheen Ahmed\, Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings\, Francisca Onumah and Onome Otite. \nThe title We Gather refers to the gathering of ideas\, skills and emotions embedded within these five craft practices and the meeting of perspectives that have been underrepresented in the industry. It is also a symbol of gratitude towards the communities who gathered their courage\, bodies\, and voices to support justice for Black lives\, which instigated deeper conversations between the UK’s Black makers and the Crafts Council. \n“This exhibition has offered us a unique opportunity to curate in honour of women who share similar experiences and frames of reference to our own\, but also within a mainstream cultural organisation that we haven’t traditionally seen ourselves reflected in. We are excited to bring together their collection of works\, which offer audiences fresh visibility to crafts that has emotional depth\, space and social resonance.” Curators of We Gather\, Rosie Ross & Griffi. \nThe We Gather exhibition came out of Craft Expertise\, the AHRC-funded UKRI/RCUK Innovation Fellowship led by Dr Karen Patel of Birmingham City University\, collaborating with Crafts Council. The research aimed to raise awareness of inequalities in the current craft economy in the UK and highlight the various challenges women of colour face in the sector. \nCommissioned by Dr Karen Patel as part of her research\, each artist in the exhibition will present new and existing work. \nBirmingham-based artist Shaheen Ahmed uses maps to reflect narratives of statelessness and disparagement. Her work is layered with a multitude of craft processes and motifs\, including calligraphy and Islamic geometry. She wore a blindfold while making them connect with the emotions and experiences of oppressed societies. \nEast Sussex-based artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, known for her provocative textile works that challenge preconceptions of knitting and crochet\, has created a knitted magazine cover – ‘We Mek Magazine’- full of symbolism with a central figure inspired by political activist Angela Davis and with her watch set to 9.25\, the time that George Floyd lost his life to police brutality. \nBritish-Sudanese textile artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings will present a new light installation. The work incorporates dyeing\, screen-printing\, and Devoré techniques to explore themes of identity\, communication\, heritage\, and womanhood. The artist is influenced by her Sudanese heritage\, which is reflected in her use of Arabic geometry\, colour\, and form. \nGhanaian-born silversmith Francisca Onumah has created three emotive and figurative vessels in her new work ‘In our sKin’ (2021) that reflect family\, relationships and historical images of Ghanaian people in everyday life. Their abstracted patterns are deconstructed from traditional Ghanaian motifs\, fabrics\, and crafted objects. Instead\, marks and textures are repeatedly hammered into sheet metal to mirror and resemble the patterns found in textiles and fabrics. \nLondon-based artist Onome Otite has created a new textile work inspired by the support network between women\, the group of figures in her piece are based on close friends of hers that have inspired her. She has also intentionally chosen five figures to mirror the relevance of the five women taking part in the We Gather exhibition. She has hand-stitched loose-folded fabrics across her hand-drawn statistics\, which each of her subjects has donated. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a gathering space. Material from the commissioning artists will be displayed alongside other pioneering female makers whose work celebrates craft within everyday contexts. Among these will be works by artists Jasleen Kaur and Magdalene Odundo DBE from the Crafts Council Collection. We Gather is a site for learning and reflection\, with books\, reports and images encouraging visitors to discuss visibility\, cultural traditions\, and the value of women’s contribution to craft within everyday contexts. \nThe exhibition also features a selection of objects and portraits of female artisans from The Black Artisans\, a photographic project by Jo Sealy that celebrates Black artisans in traditional sectors of UK heritage crafts and gives visibility to doing practices derived from African and Caribbean cultural heritage\, including steel pan making and calabash art. \nThe exhibition graphic design is by Rose Nordin\, co-founder of OOMK (One of My Kind).

SUMMARY:Ghana Party in the Park
DESCRIPTION:The world is now coming to Africa!” proclaimed the Guardian in a recent article on the global popularity of Africa’s most exciting cultural export: Afrobeats. Beyond the music\, demand for African food is also skyrocketing worldwide. For those looking for an authentic African experience\, London’s Ghana Party in the Park Festival is just the ticket! Dance to afrobeats\, feast on traditional cuisines and admire spectacular Ghanaian costumes\, all for as little as £20! \n\n\n\nHeld in Enfield’s Trent Park\, the annual outdoor festival will be attended by a crowd of 10\,000\, making it the world’s biggest Ghanian event outside of Ghana\, attracting overseas visitors from Europe\, the USA\, Canada and of course\, Ghana itself. \n\n\n\nAfrobeats has become one of the most beloved music genres across the globe\, with artists such as US superstar Drake and British grime artist Dave featuring on chart-topping afrobeat anthems. Whilst organisers remain tight-lipped about this year’s music line-up until the official announcement in June\, the event guarantees big names and fresh sounds\, with Mr Eazi\, Tion Wayne\, and Chip having graced the Ghana Party in the Park stage in recent years. \n\n\n\nAnd\, of course\, no Ghanaian festival would be complete without food. Lots of it! From Jollof and suya to bofro and sobolo\, Ghana Party in the Park promises the very best in West African cuisine\, on top of which\, the UK’s leading World Food brand Tropical Sun will be sampling their delicious snacks and drinks at their stand. SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. SUMMARY:South London Previews Festival: Sophie Duker & Rob Auton
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning comedians Sophie Duker and Rob Auton in a comedy double bill as they work up their new shows ahead of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. \nSophie Duker\nHot comedy weirdo\, Sophie Duker\, hits Streatham to rustle up a new hour of comedy fire for 2024. What\, like it’s hard? All this race-baiter / big ol’ freak needs is a working microphone\, a tequila-based cocktail\, and a captive audience – honey\, that’s you. \n‘An incomparable stand-up voice of our time’ – Voice Magazine\n‘Laugh-out loud funny’ – The Telegraph \nRob Auton\nThis is a show about eyes when they are open and eyes when they are shut. With this show I wanted to explore what I could do to myself and others with language when eyes are open and when they are shut. After writing ten shows on specific themes including the colour yellow in ‘The Yellow Show’\, the sky in ‘The Sky Show’ and myself in ‘The Rob Auton Show’ I wanted to think about what makes me open my eyes and what makes me shut my eyes. The show will involve the audience shutting their eyes and opening their eyes at specific points. -Rob Auton \n“A genuine original” – Guardian\n“Brilliant” – Stewart Lee\n“One of my absolute favourites” – Daniel Kitson\n“Rob Auton is the mother freaking greatest” – James Acaster
