SUMMARY:Speed Caravan / Ghoula / Gnawa London (Stances Festival- مواقف)
DESCRIPTION:Now in it’s 2nd edition\, Stances- مواقف: North African Multimedia & Performance Festival explores and celebrates the daring visions of contemporary artists from North Africa and the diaspora. With more than a dozen events over a 3 week period\, this triple-bill is an all star line up showcasing some of North Africa’s most moving acts and the closing performance of STANCES مواقف festival. \nRaï | Gnawa | African | Electronics | Chaabi | Rock | Trance \nThis is a ticketed event. Tickets available through Rich Mix. \nSPEED CARAVAN\nFuelled by the creative fire Mehdi Haddab\, Speed Caravan is the Paris-based quartet charged towards a psychedelic horizon. Taking traditional Algerian influences and the unique appeal of Raï genre\, the band rips through unstoppable electronic beats\, grooves and raw rock energy. Haddab\, a virtuoso oud player\, has turned it’s classical role on its head\, instead turning the oud into unapologetic rock and roll instrument. With their first album\, Kalashnik Love\, Mehdi and his Speed Caravan have created a ‘contemporary music caravan’; as Songlines writes: “Haddab has fused history and technical brilliance with rage and energy\, and created something quite phenomenal.” \nGHOULA (A/V set)\nIn Tunisia\, music has been a generational vehicle for popular symbols\, images and myths. Despite its small size\, Ghoula sees his native country as a north African crossroad where legacies came to settle. As a producer and multi-instrumentalist posing his sounds on a backdrop of captivating images\, Ghoula creates genre-defying sets through both acoustics and samples. Obsessed with North African multimedia heritage\, Ghoula has been digging up vinyls from flea markets and old Tunisian medinas\, bringing back vestiges of forgotten music and kiKitsch visuals\, all cooked on top of contemporary upbeat dance rhythms. \nGNAWA LONDON\nLed by Moroccan Gnawa artist and award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music Simo Lagnawi\, the band pays its own unique tribute to North Africa’s most prolific musical tradition and sacred trance music. His solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ released on Waulk records was featured in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ as he’s also been nominated in their ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Artist’ categories. Whether you’re a newcomer or veteran to the genre\, Gnawa London is a force to be reckoned with. \nThis event is 16+.\nRich Mix is wheelchair accessible. \nThis event has been made possible by the generous support of Al Araby TV and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Live Concert - Alex Stolze + Ben Osborn
DESCRIPTION:Live Concert – Alex Stolze + Ben Osborn\n \nNonostar label mates play an intimate concert at St. Margaret’s House\, Bethnal Green. Only UK date of the European tour.\nAbout this event\nAlex Stolze \nPerforming with his unique\, custom-made five-string electro-acoustic violin\, Alex is a pioneering figure in his field of modern classical/post-pop explorations. Shifting seamlessly between stark modern classical works\, fiercely intelligent electronica and off-kilter indie pop\, Stolze manages to craft his own consistent sound throughout. \nBen Osborn \nChannelling Leonard Cohen-Esque balladry\, Ben also draws from electronica\, folk and 20th-century art music. Ethereal string sections rise and fade\, Björk-like beats skitter\, Erik Satie piano chords drift into view. In less capable hands\, it might sound miscellaneous\, but he weaves his disparate influences into textural tapestries that sound like nobody but him. \nThird Act TBC

SUMMARY:Artist Launches London Exhibition In Support Of Children’s Cleft Charity
DESCRIPTION:Katie Manning\, artist\, and mother of three from Oxford\, is launching an art exhibition in March to raise awareness of cleft and Smile Train UK\, the international children’s cleft charity.\nThe exhibition titled ‘Portraits’ will run from 3rd – 13th March at The Brick Lane Gallery in Bethnal Green\, London. Katie’s hand-drawn collection will display 30 portraits of children born worldwide with a cleft. Some of the children shown in the exhibition have directly benefited from Smile Train’s free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care services\, allowing them to live whole and healthy lives. \nThe exhibition will be Katie’s first since she was a student at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College\, where she studied Textile Art and Surface Decoration. The artist was inspired to embark on the artistic adventure following her family’s own experiences of clefts – her eldest daughter was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate\, and her husband was born with a unilateral cleft. \nA cleft is the most common facial difference globally\, affecting around 1 in 700 babies each year. However\, while supporting her daughter through cleft surgery and subsequent orthodontic work and speech therapy\, Katie noticed that there is still a lot of stigma and misunderstanding associated with a cleft. This often stems from a lack of awareness and knowledge of what a cleft is and how differently it can impact individuals and their families for entire lifetimes. \nIn a bid to tackle this issue\, last year\, Katie committed to hand-drawing 100 portraits of babies\, children and adults born with a cleft. Katie is now launching a ‘preview’ of some of her art\, hoping that it will help raise awareness and increase knowledge creatively and powerfully. \nKatie has also joined Smile Train UK’s Cleft Community Advisory Council\, using lived experience to advise on campaigns and activities and becoming a Smile Train UK ambassador to raise awareness for the charity. Katie is passionate about Smile Train’s work and has set up a dedicated Just Giving page in support of the charity. \nIn the UK\, cleft surgery is carried out within the first 12 months of a baby’s life by the National Health Service (NHS). However\, hundreds of thousands of children living in resource-poor communities worldwide are not as fortunate and do not have access to the lifesaving cleft treatment they desperately need. \nSmile Train uses a unique and sustainable model of empowering local medical professionals and hospitals with the tools they need to complete free surgeries and an entire programme of aftercare. Over the last 21 years\, the charity has supported safe and quality cleft care for 1.5+ million children and will continue to do so until every person in need of a cleft has access to the care they deserve. \nA selection of Katie’s collection will be on sale at The Brick Lane Gallery for a limited time. Entry to the exhibition is free\, and the portraits will be sold at the starting value of £125.00.

SUMMARY:Sound Bath at IMT Gallery: Free event for Tower Hamlets residents
DESCRIPTION:Come\, relax and unwind with a restorative sound bath in the unique and beautiful setting of IMT Gallery’s new exhibition\, Light the lamp rarely\, let the shadow come\, a solo presentation of meditative paintings by Emma Tod. \n\n\n\nSound Therapist Carlo Volpi will lead participants on a sonic journey using gongs and bowls\, bringing the mind and body deep into restorative relaxation. We encourage participants to sit or lie down comfortably and simply let the sound of the instruments wash over them. \n\n\n\nSound baths bring great benefits similar to those in meditation\, as they reduce stress\, muscle tension and physical pain whilst promoting a positive\, calm and focused state of mind. \n\n\n\nCarlo Volpi is a fully qualified\, sound and biodynamic massage therapist with over 20 years of experience in meditation. He is also a designer and lecturer on the MA in Fashion at the Royal College of Art. Carlo’s practice is focused on bringing the gong into a contemporary art and fashion context. We will be exploring combining these elements throughout this year\, with sound baths taking place during each of the gallery’s exhibitions and enhanced sound bath experiences incorporating drawing\, knitting and shamanic practices. \n\n\n\nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Carlo’s sound baths\, as told by previous participants: \n\n\n\n“Carlo created the perfect sanctuary to recharge from busy life in London. I felt immediately at ease\, and Carlo supplied as much information as I required about the process\, instruments and what to expect. Although I am a regular sound therapist\, it was my first experience with the sessions being largely focused on gongs as the main instrument. The experience was truly incredible. The physical and mental sensations were very different each time\, and I relaxed into the sound very quickly in every session. I left feeling calmer yet invigorated\, peaceful but energised…nicely balanced.” \n\n\n\n“I really enjoyed the lower tones and vibrations; so deep I envisaged treacle flowing and bubbling\, was amazing!” \n\n\n\n“I thought it was lovely !!! I was in a deep state for 45 mins and felt unconscious!! I will definitely be signing up for future sessions!” \n\n\n\nEmma Tod’s paintings in Light the lamp rarely let the shadow come to explore the remediation of paint in a period of digital image circulation\, with its accelerating speeds of transmission and shared attention deficit. Works negotiate this shift through stillness and ambiguity. Peripheral events\, fleeting moments and chance encounters are brought to the centre creating new imaginary territories. Visual fragments taken from the internet\, TV\, and art history are playfully recombined and erased. Zones of exclusion are brought to the fore\, challenging the primacy of the centre over the periphery. Exclusion matters. \n\n\n\nBring something to lie on\, such as a yoga mat or blanket\, and something warm to wear\, such as a jumper or blanket. \n\n\n\nPlease note: If you suffer from tinnitus or epilepsy or are in the first trimester of pregnancy\, it isn’t advisable to attend the session. \n\n\n\nPlaces are very limited\, so book now to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\n🎟️ Tickets are available now on https://imagemusictext.eventbrite.com/ \n\n\n\nThis event has been lovingly created with support from Clarion Futures.

DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of spontaneous creativity with artist Sophie Chapman at IMT Gallery. \n\n\n\nDuring this immersive 3-hour workshop\, Sophie will guide the group through a unique journey of mimicry\, recording\, punk sensibilities\, playful experimentation\, and artistic collaboration\, resulting in the creation of a band that exists solely for this brief but electrifying moment. \n\n\n\nThe workshop culminates in the production of a brand-new EP recorded during the session\, and each participant will receive a link to this exclusive track. But that’s not all—participants will also have the opportunity to craft the band’s logo and visual identity. \n\n\n\nJoin Sophie Chapman for an unforgettable experience celebrating the power of collaboration and the joy of making something remarkable together. No prior experience is needed! \n\n\n\nAbout Sophie Chapman: \n\n\n\nSophie Chapman\, an interdisciplinary artist and organiser originally from Newcastle and now based in London\, brings a unique perspective to the world of art and community engagement. Sophie’s creative journey is marked by a diverse range of influences\, drawing inspiration from science\, philosophy\, queer and feminist theory\, pop culture\, music\, and grassroots community organising. Her art serves as a vehicle for learning\, a process that thrives on collaboration and experimentation. Sophie’s portfolio includes a rich tapestry of experimental performances\, films\, sculptures\, drawings\, texts\, and soundscapes\, all serving as vibrant expressions of the ideas she explores. Through projects that delve into science fiction\, punk\, improvisation\, spatial justice\, movement\, and embodied knowledge\, Sophie challenges boundaries and invites us to rethink the world we inhabit. \n\n\n\nBeyond her artistic pursuits\, Sophie is an experienced educator\, facilitator\, programmer\, and access support worker\, all driven by her commitment to nurturing more supportive\, politicised\, and experimental structures for creative expression and community building. Sophie is currently developing a body of work called ‘Tiger Helix (Oblivion)’ about queer entanglements with nature amidst collective feelings of apocalypse. As well as this she received the 2023 ‘Art in the ArchiveBursary’ from the Women’s Art Library and the Feminist Review to develop a text called ‘SLUG’ about slow time. Made in collaboration with Sahjan Kooner\, the film installation ‘HONEY’ is being shown as part of ‘dankEconogy1_ALIENVillage’ at Eastside Projects Birmingham Oct-Dec 2023\, touring to Kunsthall Ghent Feb 2024\, with a chatbot version of the work available to interact with via UP Projects. \n\n\n\nSalty Measures Series: \n\n\n\nThis workshop is part of our Salty Measures series\, a series of workshops curated by Paul Stewart and Sarah Perks that plunge into the pleasures and depths of art-making. Our inaugural season showcases the talents of Hamja Ahsan\, Sophie Chapman\, and Sarah Perks. Each workshop in this series offers a unique approach to engaging with art\, whether through embodied experiences\, delightful encounters\, or shared narratives. \n\n\n\nThese experiences will involve collaborative art-making\, and each participant will depart with a keepsake from their journey\, whether it’s a self-recorded EP\, a concept for a fried chicken franchise\, or a profound meditation that unveils a non-human connection. \n\n\n\nSalty Measures is supported by Teesside University\, Centre for Culture and Creativity\, IAA funding. \n\n\n\nThe free entry places for Tower Hamlets residents have been lovingly created with support from Clarion Futures. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we embark on a journey of exploration and creativity with Sophie Chapman\, an artist dedicated to reimagining our world. SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Marshmallow Moon - Workshop at IMT Gallery
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the halcyon days around the winter solstice\, Joseph Walsh’s workshop ‘Plant Gazing: Under Marshmallow Moon’ offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the upcoming year. \n\n\n\nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly smudged with mugwort to encourage chi flow. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. \n\n\n\nTake a moment to ground yourself and reconnect with your body\, sipping on Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) tea cultivated and harvested from Joseph’s wildlife plot. SUMMARY:Kenji Lim | Spend Time Not Thinking About Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:  \nUnder clear\, magenta skies\, they choose to settle\, nursed by the shade of passing trees. Warmth still lingers in the grasslands\, but the day is fading fast. Shadows of nightwings flicker over the hay\, swooping into branchy nests. \nStep lightly\, and take care of the amoeba underfoot. Leave no trace. The pitter-patter of pseudotoes echoes down desire paths between the shallow groves. Time glides with no familiar route ahead\, and dappled light scatters like many marbles over the blueish plains. The sun is falling\, auburn rays shine over swathes of caterpillar reeds\, their eyes peeping into the beams of last light. Cat tongues uncurl from bleary-faced cocoons\, eager for the night\, for a taste. \nOrbs wait above a lake\, rolling in place\, humming an absent-minded tune. A purr of regeneration dances on the air currents\, charging the lake below. In between contented rocks\, jewel water flows\, giving life to uncommon lands. Fur-laden tracks lead away\, soggy from the fuchsia puddles\, fluffy ends squeezing into secret mossy holes. \nLook down. Fleshy cups\, suckered at the rim of the lake spit pearls along the shoreline. Hungry mouths gape\, teeth brace\, swallowing dusk. Lichen bubbles between a chorus of drinking bristles\, the body hair of this earth. Life is not just surface-bound and sensible. It rains onto the ground\, sunstained\, settling to graze on this rich mess of violet roots. Please don’t touch the wildlife; take it for what it is. \nNew and unexpected stars yield an entangled bond\, shifting form when seen or unseen. That happens here\, between each button paw\, craggy horn\, and stalking eye. It plays out all at once\, under the trail of the moons. \nCan we ask about hills and waters or sing about bracken and fungus? They murmur into each other’s ears. They come down over a cliff face in a river of slime and leaf-fall\, tumbling into the reflection of a low pool. \nIn the age of unconquered pasture\, the wind grazes an unembraceable heaven\, a shyer blush of pink and blue. Rosey hills fold neatly\, with an orange sun hurrying to set between them. The beings beneath its gaze continue\, undisturbed\, as they always have. \nThey rest. Their silence whispers\, off you go now; this place was never meant for you. \nText by Charlotte Cole \nKenji Lim is a British artist based in Essex and born in Singapore. Lim studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art\, London (MA – 2017-2019) and at the Ruskin School of Art\, Oxford University (BFA – 1999-2002). Lim works through sculpture\, video\, digital collage\, installation and painting. His work reflects and refracts the landscape experience through the prisms of culture\, myth\, philosophy\, and the metaphysical\, returning the gaze of Western cultural norms through the eyes of other-than-human actors. Part archaeological\, part Fraggle Rock\, he navigates alternative modes of seeing and understanding the world and its inhabitants. Lim’s work is shown internationally\, including recent exhibitions\, such as Tourist at Galerie Reinthaler\, Vienna\, and Perishing Thirst at Quench Gallery\, Margate. He is an Acme Work/Live Artist at High House in Purfleet\, Essex.

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Waxing Crescent Moon with artist Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:As we approach July’s regenerative waxing moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the month ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process\, of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self. \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with frankincense – woody\, fresh and uplifting. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. \nIn this two hour workshop we will explore the mysteries of plants through drawing\, painting\, and meditative observations\, we will go beyond the confines of the ordinary. We’ll take a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene Rose tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University\, and recently delivered the course Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Project Space\, as well as sharing insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants: \n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus we were able to connect with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. – participant \n“A very naturally held space offering freedom to be intuitive\, and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Vine Moon Workshop with Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Connect with Earth’s plant allies through drawing\, painting and tea ceremony… \nAs we approach September’s Waning Crescent Moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the month ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process\, of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self* \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with Yarrow and Rosemary\, earthy and clearing. \nTake a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. We will select from the hedgerow with hawthorn\, rosehip or hops. We will also consider the hedgerow as thicket\, stopover and shelter for beings. \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Soft\, buffering\, slowing down. Small insects dwell within petals\, cushioned\, intoxicated. This is how it felt for me too. The bee moves closer to the centre\, three rounds of rose tea. Perfumed aroma in swirls and spirals\, circular time. Definition and edge dissolved. Petals unfurling. Surrender myself to it. Rose is associated with love and romance”. \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. A limited number of tickets are available free of charge for residents of Tower Hamlets. These places have been lovingly created with support from Tower Hamlets Council. \nSee you there!
