SUMMARY:Rana Begum In Conversation with Anne Barlow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively evening with one of the most exciting artists working in Britain today\, Rana Begum\, in conversation with Anne Barlow\, Director of Tate St Ives\, who hosted Rana’s solo exhibition in 2018. The talk will coincide with Rana’s exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery Is This Tomorrow? (14 Feb-12 May). \nThe work of London-based artist Rana Begum distills spatial and visual experience into ordered form. Through her refined language of Minimalist abstraction\, Begum blurs the boundaries between sculpture\, painting and architecture. Her visual language draws from the urban landscape as well as geometric patterns from traditional Islamic art and architecture. Light is fundamental to her process. Her works absorb and reflect varied densities of light to produce an experience for the viewer that is both temporal and sensorial. \nAbout Rana Begum\nBorn in Bangladesh in 1977\, Rana Begum lives and works in London. In 1999\, she graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design and\, in 2002\, gained an MFA in Painting from Slade School of Fine Art. Recent and forthcoming exhibitions include: Is This Tomorrow? Whitechapel Gallery (2019)\, Frieze Sculpture Park\, Regents Park (2018)\, Frieze solo show\, Regents Park (2018)\, Solo show\, Christian Lethert\, Cologne (2018)\, solo show\, TATE St Ives (2018)\, Actions\, Kettle’s Yard (2018)\, Women to Watch: Metal\, Philips Gallery (2017)\, Occasional Geometries\, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2017)\, Things That Soak You\, Kate MacGarry (2017)\, 31 Women\, BreeseLittle (2017)\, Space Light Colour\, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts\, Norwich (2017)\, The Order of Things\, The Wilson (2017)\, Tribute to Sol Lewitt\, Gemeente Museum Den Haag (2016)\, Flatland/Narrative\, MRAC Serignan\, The Space Between\, Parasol Unit (2016)\, Into boundless space I leap\, Maxwell Centre\, UK (2016)\, 11th Gwangju Biennale\, Korea (2016)\, Towards an Infinite Geometry\, Jhaveri Contemporary\, Mumbai\, India (2015)\, Future Light\, Vienna Biennale 2015: Ideas for Change\, Austria\, Solo Show\, Galeri Mana\, Istanbul\, Turkey (2014)\, Solo Project\, Dhaka Art Summit\, Dhaka\, Bangladesh (2014)\, Manifold\, Galerie Christian Lethert\, Cologne\, Germany (2013). \nShe has also participated in many international group exhibitions\, including: New Visions\, Tensta Konsthal\, Stockholm\, Sweden (2016); Geometries of Difference\, Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art\, New York\, USA (2015); The Language of Human Consciousness\, Athr Gallery\, Jeddah\, Saudi Arabia (2014); Summer Exhibition\, Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, UK (2012) where she received the Jack Goldhill Award for Sculpture. She was recently awarded the 2017 Abraaj Group Art Prize. \nThis event is part of the Asia House 2019 Winter Arts and Learning Programme\, a completely unique initiative in the UK in presenting a pan-Asian artistic and cultural programme with a scope of more than 40 countries in the region. Through our programme of events on arts\, culture and education we act as a catalyst for the discovery of the diverse arts and cultures of Asia and the Asian diaspora\, and serve as a bridge of understanding between the UK and Asia.

SUMMARY:Lilia Mazurkevich Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:M1 Fine Art – Greenwich is proud to present Lilia Mazurkevich’s eagerly anticipated solo exhibition. \nLilia Mazurkevich spent many years training extensively in some of Eastern Europe’s most respected art establishments. Following this training\, during her professional early years in the late 1980s\, she worked as an illustrator for national Ukrainian newspapers from her nearby home country of Belarus. This led to many lucrative deals with publishing houses across the globe throughout the ‘90s and ‘00s\, creating works of art for the covers and content of internationally distributed novels and research-focused textbooks; something which\, for the first time in her life\, saw her leave her beloved homeland behind and integrate fully into the western world. \nAs a result of her growing worldwide reputation in the years surrounding the turn of the century\, the canvases released to the market from Mazurkevich’s studio became highly sought after by collectors and two distinct styles began to emerge and become defined. \nBy 2012\, Mazurkevich’s astronomical rise in popularity on the commercial art scene had seen her works accepted into the Phantasten Museum in Vienna\, Austria; she had also been shortlisted at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition and the BP Portrait Award at The National Portrait Gallery\, both in London\, UK. \nAt this exhibition\, there will be on display an array of creatures from Lilia’s ‘Day’ series\, including never-before-seen originals and a brand new collection of limited edition prints. Browse the art gallery at your leisure and learn more about Lilia Mazurkevich by speaking to our knowledgeable and friendly art consultants.

SUMMARY:Comic Tendencies
DESCRIPTION:Eve Leibe Gallery is pleased to present ‘Comic Tendencies’\, a group featuring for the rst time in London\, Samantha Rosenwald\, Oda Iselin Sønderland and Maurizio Bongiovanni. e works in the exhibition challenge the social expectations of feminine-masculing behaviours\, defying rigid gender categories in an amusing light. \nAppearing for centuries in magazines\, newspapers and underground publications\, comics illustrate cartoons\, but also politics\, popular culture\, propaganda and subversion. While the bright colours\, curved gures and storyboard format speaks to children\, throughout history they have had the power to challenge the status quo\, with its cartoon-like format providing the opportunity to critique and subvert reality. \nText by Lizzy Vartanian Collier \nPrivate view: Wednesday\, 9th October 5.00 pm- 8.00 pm\nAt: 30 Elizabeth Street London\, Belgravia\, SW1W 9RB \nJoin us for the gallery tour with Lizzy Vartanian Collier on Saturday\, 12th October 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm

SUMMARY:Arts & Crafts jewellery’s unique place in British history
DESCRIPTION:Live\, interactive online talk at Emery Walker’s House will set the scene with a snapshot of the jewellery industry in the run up to the Arts & Crafts movement\, giving context to the protagonists’ work which was responding to the social\, economic and political issues of the day. It will go on to cover the foremost features of Arts & Crafts jewellery and where it stands in the current market. \n“The Arts & Crafts movement was hugely reactionary against the trends which had been permeating the British jewellery market for decades\,” Sarah explains\, “ The resulting jewels have a unique place in the history of British jewellery with their craftsmanship taking centre stage. This talk will aim to examine the overall state of the jewellery market in the late 19th / early 20th century and the place Arts & Crafts jewellers and jewels have within it.” \nSarah is kindly supporting this series of online talks at Emery Walker’s House as she says\, “I’ve visited the Emery Walker house more than once now and every time I find it breath-taking.” \n“As a local resident\, it is such a treat to have this treasure on our doorsteps. The role the Walkers played\, along with other local residents\, in defining the Arts & Crafts movement is truly unique. For so much of their home to have been preserved unaltered for nearly a century gives us a unique gifted insight into the lives of these innovators.” as she is an admirer of by its Arts & Crafts interiors.” \n“ I love Arts and Crafts furniture and jewellery as its all about the craftsmanship. The jewellery does not come up often at auction\, but what sets it aside is it offers both an aesthetic and physical appeal\, the pieces are very tactile.” \nThe talk will cover a range of designers and makers including May Morris\, who lived at 8 Hammersmith Terrace and was good friends of the Walkers who resided next door at number 7. “I like to think she is a neighbour”\, says Sarah\, who originally hails from Florida\, but was drawn to West London by its rich artistic heritage and moved from Hammersmith to Chiswick six years ago. \nWith the new normal meaning most of us are currently communicating via the internet and visible from the neck up\, maybe this is the time to invest in a new necklace or earrings. You might even be tempted by a Victorian tiara!

SUMMARY:Eco Festive Fashion Week
DESCRIPTION:We are Eco Fashion Events – A collective hosting pop-ups and online events that celebrate the best of sustainable fashion\, style & crafts. \nWe’d love you to join us for our first ever series of Eco Festive Fashion Week events – happening 5th to 11th December 2020. \nWith the news that every 2-in-5 Christmas jumpers bought in the UK are discarded after being worn once\, the seeds for our eco festive fashion week were planted. \nThis year\, we expect Christmas to be quite different to usual. Needless to say we don’t expect there will be too many office parties or opportunities for get-togethers. We also strongly believe that\, as we draw this year to a close\, we all need a good excuse to enjoy ourselves\, reflect and reset. \nWe have over 10 individual events planned in collaboration with some exciting international collaborators across the fashion and craft space… To name a few\, we will be slowing down with a meditative stitching workshop\, seeing how to upcycle items we already own into festive Christmas jumpers\, and figuring out what to do with our seasonal fashions once the party’s over! Bringing it all together with a Christmas Jumper Day/Ugly Sweater (to our US friends) Party Zoom style. We are also fundraising for Save the Children with each event having an optional donation element included. The events are individually ticketed with a price to reflect. Please check out our Eventbrite listings and book a ticket or two\, or all! \nWe really hope that\, along with highlighting the best of eco & ethical style at Christmas\, our week of events will leave you feeling inspired and empowered.\nCan’t wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:Lito Apostolakou - Clothes You'll Never Wear
DESCRIPTION:‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ is a participatory art installation that challenges the function of the retail space as a site of fast fashion consumption by transforming it into an immersive workshop and creative hub for making\, reusing and sharing. \nArtist in residence Lito Apostolakou uses waste materials to create textile sculptures based on personal stories\, memories and perceptions of identity. Drawing inspiration from visual\, textual\, and audio resources\, she invites members of the public to join her in using recyclable materials and waste fabric to create imaginary garments. \n‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ responds to the current precarious climate by transforming waste into visual expressions of identity and reimagining the high street as a centre of creativity. Princes Arcade links the cultural hub of the neighbouring Royal Academy with the bespoke menswear retailers of Jermyn Street\, with the project representing a conceptual and physical bridge between both. \nYou are invited to witness the collection of absurd garments develop and grow\, learn about the stories that inspired the pieces or tune into personal memories.

SUMMARY:Craft Okinawa Lions & Sip Awamori Cocktails at Pantechnicon – Ceramics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ceramics Workshop\nCreate your own Shisa Guardian Lion statuette while sipping on a unique cocktail in this workshop led by ceramicist Akiko Matsuda.\nShisa are found all over the islands of Okinawa\, Japan’s southernmost prefecture and a beautiful subtropical archipelago. The figures are an iconic part of the islands’ unique history and heritage and can be found on rooftops and roadsides\, in restaurants and workplaces. Believed to ward off bad luck and evil spirits\, in the workshop\, Akiko will guide you through crafting a male (open mouth) or female (closed mouth) Shisa\, telling you more about the symbolism of these island talismans as you make them. To give you a taste of Okinawa\, the host will serve each guest a cocktail made with awamori\, a unique rice-based spirit indigenous to the islands\, as well as some Okinawan snacks sent all the way from the islands by Okinawa Tourism (Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau) which closely worked with Pantechnicon to develop this special experience. \nParticipants can take home their work unfired on the day\, or for an extra fee of £15\, Pantechnicon will arrange for the works to be glazed (transparent glaze) and fired. The firing process will take about one month. \nBook at Pantechnicon.com. \nAbout the artist\nAkiko Matsuda is a ceramic artist born in Kanagawa\, Japan. Since she was a child\, painting\, calligraphy\, music\, and pottery have been an important part of her life. After attending a Shisa making workshop in Okinawa\, Akiko was inspired to pursue a career in ceramics. She majored in ceramics at Tama Art University in Tokyo\, and her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across London and Tokyo. \nTickets cost £40 per person\, including all materials to make your own shisha and an awamori cocktail. This workshop will be held twice\, once at 14:00 and again at 18:00.
