SUMMARY:AI: Prompting Images of Digital Life
DESCRIPTION:With the recent emergence of image-generating AI systems such as DALL-E\, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney\, the task of generating images with computers has been remodelled as a text-based process known as ‘prompting’. \nPrompting involves instructing a pre-trained AI model to hallucinate images in reaction to the specifics of text-based inputs. Prompts dictate image style\, composition and genre to the extent that images generated using these systems often appear as weird pastiches\, with giveaway aesthetic signals – 8-fingered hands\, for example – that point to their artificial origins. \nWorkshop participants will experiment with trying to find the cracks in these systems\, using creative prompting to explore whether these systems really are the dawn of a new horizon\, offering the potential for breakthroughs in digital image-making beyond the offset of human labour. \nParticipants are required to bring their laptops. \nJames Irwin’s bio \nJames Irwin is an Artist\, PhD researcher at Kingston School of Art\, Lecturer at UAL and Digital Media Tutor at the Royal Academy Schools. He works with web technologies\, AI systems and digital sound and image to investigate the notion of a vital life force inherent within digital media. \nBy creating cognitive assemblages – made from a combination of networked digital hardware\, software and human wetware – his work builds from new materialist ideas around recentering the human\, undoing our role as autonomous individuals and pointing to the ways in which the production of subjectivity is offset to forces outside of our bodies; the posthuman is biological\, but also networked and dispersed through machines. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Botanical Cabinet
DESCRIPTION:The Botanical Cabinet takes its name from a historical plant publication\, which has inspired three contemporary artists to contemplate notions of migration and the naturalisation of plants and of people. \n\n\n\nAn American artist of European heritage\, Marcia Teusink\, explores the movement of plants during the colonial period and beyond. Working in sculpture\, painting and video\, she examines the effects of history on modern life\, in particular in the context of climate change\, as the long-term effects of moving species from their original ecosystem are evident to this day. \n\n\n\nChicago-based artist Tulika Ladsariya is drawn to objects associated with domesticity and nurture to discuss identity and personal experience as a first-generation immigrant with roots in India. In her cyanotypes\, the plants she prints onto pages torn from her old school atlas serve as metaphors for the care required in putting down roots\, while the maps lament the imposed borders that separate cultures. \n\n\n\nMilena Michalski investigates the botanical hierarchies applied to plants and draws parallels between leaf and human veins\, lines of communication and cartography. With parents from Yugoslavia and Germany\, her ancestral countries no longer exist in the way they did when she was born. Plants are not only the subject of her work\, but form part of its materiality through her use of plant developers\, inks and toners in her printmaking and photographic work. \n\n\n\nAll works relate directly or indirectly to the legacy of Loddiges Nursery. Initially a small seed business started by a German immigrant\, the nursery on Mare Street rose to fame during the early nineteenth century. Boasting the largest hothouse in Europe at the time\, Loddiges was celebrated for introducing many species that are now common in the UK. \n\n\n\nBuilt in 1697 as a grand country house\, 195 Mare Street is one of Hackney’s oldest buildings. Home to the Elizabeth Fry Refuge from 1860-1913\, the property housed thousands of young women recently released from prison. In the twentieth century\, it became the New Lansdowne Working Men’s Club before falling into disrepair. The house will soon be restored as a family home and community arts venue. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be open from 11 am to 5 pm on Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays during the exhibition period from 16 to 24 September.

SUMMARY:Hooray For The Here And Now - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Hooray for the Here and Now is the first solo exhibition by multi-disciplinary artist Sam Haynes. The exhibition title reflects the positive outlook that defines her practice. \n\n\n\nStraddling sculpture and photography to balance an intuitive\, playful process within a structural framework\, the artist presents an ambiguous body of work that defies categorisation. Assemblage photo works will be shown alongside a series of sculptures constructed using materials sourced from the recent renovation of the gallery space itself. \n\n\n\nHaynes uses light and shadow to manipulate perspective and perception. Found objects and everyday materials are elevated to luxury items\, and precarious constructions are granted longevity in fine art photography\, introducing an element of drama and celebration to a fleeting moment. A public art background and experience collaborating with marginalised communities inform her work in equal measure. \n\n\n\nMaking connections is paramount\, whether between materials or across disciplines\, between artist and viewer\, or ultimately within wider society. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday 23 September\, Sam Haynes will be in conversation with Sheryll Catto\, Artist Director & CEO of the artist development agency ActionSpace\, to discuss her creative process and the influence of community on her practice today. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition closes with an opportunity to meet some of the Sound Minds artists who open their studios to visitors on 30 September. \n\n\n\nExhibition open times: Monday-Sunday\, 12 noon to 5pm during exhibition period 21-30 September \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Wednesday 20 September\, 6-9pm \n\n\n\nAddress: Bloom Gallery\, Sound Minds\, 20-22 York Road\, London SW11 3QA

Phew was a founding member of the legendary Japanese punk band Aunt Sally. After the band’s breakup in 1979\, she continued her career as a solo artist\, releasing a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1980 and her first solo album\, ‘Phew’\, with Conny Plank\, Holger Czukay of CAN\, and Jaki Liebezeit in 1981. In 1992\, her third album\, ‘Our Likeness’\, was released on MUTE (recently reissued)\, again at Conny’s studio\, with Jaki Liebezeit of CAN\, Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten\, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. Since the beginning of the 2010s\, she has released a series of works that combine voice and electronic music and has gained international recognition as a forward-facing electronic artist. She has also released collaborative works with Ana da Silva (Raincoats)\, Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms) and others. Phew’s expansive ‘Vertical Jamming’ was released on vinyl for the first time via Disciples last year\, whilst Mute recently released her stunning record ‘New Decade’; a stark\, haunted album populated by voices that intone empty pleasantries in English and Japanese\, against a backdrop of fractured\, dubbed-out electronics.https://phewjapan.bandcamp.com/music \n\n\n\nALISON COTTON is a viola player based in London working in composition and improvisation. Her debut album ’All Is Quiet at the Ancient Theatre’ was released in 2018\, firstly on cassette on Bloxham Tapes\, followed by a vinyl release on Cardinal Fuzz (UK) and Feeding Tube (USA). In July 2019\, her long-form piece\, ‘Behind the Spiderweb Gates\,’ was released on the Australian label Longform Editions. As well as the viola\, she uses an array of other instruments (her voice\, harmonium\, percussion\, recorder\, omnichord\, shruti box and piano) to create long\, haunting folk drones. Cotton’s new album\, ‘The Portrait You Painted of Me’\, is a 6-track record – her first for Rocket Recordings. ‘Mumurations Over the Moor’ is a wordless piece of layered vocals drifting like fog towards a sunset over the green undulations of North East England. ‘The Last Wooden Ship’ evokes the shipyards of Sunderland\, laced with piano and percussion events\, while her voice calls out like a siren urging listeners to a rocky demise.https://alisoncotton-uk.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling\, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully push the boundaries of genre. Led by Newcastle-based artist Jayne Dent who takes influence from folk\, art pop\, noise\, ambient and improvised music\, the project has transformed since 2017 from a solo endeavour to an expanded group\, regularly collaborating with acclaimed North-East jazz musicians Faye MacCalman and John Pope. Me Lost Me’s music has been described in The Guardian as “stripping folk back to its bones while letting its future echoes bleed out” and by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson as a “brilliant peculiar noise”. Me Lost Me’s incredible new album ‘RPG’ is due for release on July 7th via Upset The Rhythm.https://www.melostme.com/ \n\n\n\nANA DA SILVA is a founding member and songwriter of the pioneering post-punk band The Raincoats. Across four daring full-length records\, The Raincoats helped shape the timeless notion that punk is what you make it – an act of raw expression\, not any one sound. The Raincoats have offered creative and spiritual inspiration for several generations of artists. They set a crucial precedent for feminist work within a DIY punk context\, marked all the while by Ana’s poetic lyrical style and innovative noise guitar playing. After The Raincoats’ hiatus in 1984\, Ana collaborated with The Go-Betweens\, This Heat’s Charles Hayward and choreographer/dancer Gaby Agis. In 2005\, Ana released her solo debut\, ‘The Lighthouse’ – a self-recorded collection of spare\, elegant experiments in electronic indie-pop. Ana has also collaborated with Phew on an extraordinary album ‘Island’ released by Newhere Music in 2018.http://www.anadasilva.net/ \n\n\n\nSUNROOF is the pairing of Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones. Their new album\, ‘Electronic Music Improvisations Volume 2’ is available via the Parallel Series of Mute. ‘Electronic Music Improvisations Volume 2’ is a set of eight improvised modular electronic music instrument pieces recorded at the duo’s respective home studios. The recording sessions followed release of their debut from 2021 but where Vol. 1 was the result of four decades of friendship and collaboration\, this new album came together in a relatively short space of time. Recorded in the same spirit as their previous sessions – with no pre-planning and no rehearsal – they met up with “unpatched” modular systems\, and began improvising. Without any of the parameters they followed in the first sessions\, the duo allowed the pieces to expand naturally\, keeping editing to a minimum.https://mute.ffm.to/sunroof-emivol2

SUMMARY:Art Talent Show
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to 2020’s entrance exams at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts\, where hundreds of wannabe artists are battling for a coveted spot in one of three studios. Assessed\, interrogated and challenged by three different sets of professors\, they candidly and often with unintended comic effect\, discuss gender and sexuality\, identity issues and artistic beliefs revealing intergenerational tension and cultural identity clashes. Granted unprecedented access\, filmmakers use observational camerawork to juxtapose these encounters with shots of an older pragmatic receptionist to provide a dryly humorous commentary while raising questions over the role and value of art. Hilarious and and absorbing.\n\n\n\n\n\nAdéla Komrzy\, Tomáš Bojar\, Czech Republic 2022\, 102’\, English subtitles \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Bojar and Komrzý have been blessed with an eccentric cast of faculty members who are fascinating and often hilarious. SUMMARY:For Data You Are\, And To Data You Shall Return / 为数据所生，亦归数据而去
DESCRIPTION:For Data You Are\, And To Data You Shall Return is an online exhibition of generative\, video and gamified works exploring diverse perspectives surrounding digital death\, renewal and reincarnation in the virtual domain. Surveying the nuance of long-standing and newer ruminations around the circularity of life and death\, in technological\, bodily\, and spiritual contexts\, the exhibition sees death as a narrative with which to discuss life. Death in the digital world is\, in a particular dimension\, describable\, observable\, and even manufacturable\, as well as manageable and repairable. Life in the digital world is\, on the contrary\, more mysterious. \n\n\n\nThe online exhibition comprises works that span a range of digital media processes and outcomes; from hypnotic encounters with concealed code to custom playful gamifications\, and planetary-scale simulations\, the exhibition presents expanded video practices\, role-playing narratives and reconnection with devices and their material origins\, drawing links between communications across ethers and the encounters of rogue or unknown agents acting on behalf of their meatspace counterparts. Decay\, sites of renewal\, and rethinking our existence in the digital and environmental domain are foregrounded. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition title is a subtle twist on the theological reference in the book of Genesis which infers non-immortality. This concept aligns with the Chinese Buddhist philosophy of “sheng-si-lun-hui\,” which is tied to the idea of karma and its role as social currency in the afterlife. By imbuing the interface with a uniquely generative background – a mystical quality of exposing the underside of codified processes – and by referring to data as the dust you shall return to\, the exhibition seeks to symbolise this continuous cycle of existence of all things. \n\n\n\nAccess the project here.

SUMMARY:Monumental Cares & Creative Iconoclasm
DESCRIPTION:The practice of monuments\, historic and contemporary\, continues to generate discussion surrounding the culture of commemoration in the public sphere. From reframing existent monuments to creating counter-monuments and performative monuments\, art and culture have responded to the idea of the “monumental” through acts of recontextualization\, activism and iconoclasm. CREATURE is delighted to host a special public seminar on this subject\, featuring a launch of Dr Mechtild Widrich’s (Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago) new book Monumental Cares: Sites of History and Contemporary Art (Manchester University Press\, 2023). The event will also feature a provocation by Dr Anna Marazuela Kim (international Curator\, Scholar and Specialist Adviser in the role of images in conflict) on the subject of creative iconoclasm. This seminar builds on CREATURE’s research series “Performance\, Monuments and Public Spaces”\, which began in 2021 with interventions by scholars and practitioners from around the world. The event is hosted by Dr Jacek Ludwig Scarso\, Deputy Director of CREATURE. \n\n\n\nBasing her intervention on her new book\, Widrich will explore how monument debates\, site specificity\, and art activism relate to problems that strike us as monumental or overwhelming\, such as war\, migration\, and the climate crisis. What does it mean today to talk about the ‘public sphere’ responsive to local needs and global constraints\, and how do current political concerns interact with history? \n\n\n\nKim’s presentation will give an historical view of the early origins of “monumental cares” in Rome of the 1500s\, when Raphael wrote the first official document concerning the importance of preserving monuments of antiquity\, against their destruction and reuse in the rebuilding of the city. With the inscription of these debates against destruction in their artworks themselves\, she argues\, Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo engaged in performative\, “creative iconoclasms”: imaginative\, prophylactic forms or critique\, as safeguard against this and the real\, physical destruction of images and statues of the Protestant Reformation. \n\n\n\nMonumental Cares. Sites of History and Contemporary Art \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nMonumental cares rethinks monument debates\, site specificity and art activism in light of problems that strike us as monumental or overwhelming\, such as war\, migration and the climate crisis. The book shows how artists address these issues\, from Chicago and Berlin to Oslo\, Bucharest and Hong Kong\, in media ranging from marble and glass to postcards\, graffiti and re-enactment. A multidirectional theory of site does justice to specific places but also to how far-away audiences see them. What emerges is a new ethics of care in public art\, combined with a passionate engagement with reality. Familiar questions can be answered anew: what to do with monuments\, particularly when they are the products of terror and require removal\, modification or recontextualisation? And can art address the monumental concerns of our present?

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Marshmallow Moon - Workshop at IMT Gallery
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the halcyon days around the winter solstice\, Joseph Walsh’s workshop ‘Plant Gazing: Under Marshmallow Moon’ offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the upcoming year. \n\n\n\nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly smudged with mugwort to encourage chi flow. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. \n\n\n\nTake a moment to ground yourself and reconnect with your body\, sipping on Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) tea cultivated and harvested from Joseph’s wildlife plot. Here\, we delve into the symbolism of water as an element to enhance our intentions\, as marshmallow creates mucilage in the body\, offering softening and healing properties. As a special takeaway\, participants will receive a portion of this tea – an intentional offering for personal contemplation or to share with someone special. \n\n\n\n🎟️ Plant Gazing will take place on Tuesday\, 19 December at 7 pm. Get your tickets now: Only £5 / Concessions £2 / Tower Hamlets residents attend for FREE! \n\n\n\nThis event has been lovingly created with support from Clarion Futures.

SUMMARY:Areas Of Effect: Planar Systems\, Critical Roles\, and Gaming Imaginaries
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been postponed to 9 March 2024 due to train strikes\, we apologise for any inconvenience caused.*\n\nCurated by artist David Blandy and writer Jamie Sutcliffe in association with Strange Attractor Press\, Areas Of Effect: Planar Systems\, Critical Roles\, and Gaming Imaginaries is a one-day symposium on Tabletop Role Playing Games (TTRPGs) with live game sessions.\n\n\n\n\n\nForming part of arebyte’s programme The Body\, The Mind\, The Soul which questions the complex nature of humanity in the realm of technological progress\, the event brings together artists\, game designers\, theorists\, and philosophers to discuss these wildly expansive forms of play in which players utilise both their imaginations and chance mechanics (such as dice rolls) to determine the actions of fictional characters and the scenarios surrounding them.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe symposium looks at TTRPGs as the physical interface between the body and the imaginary\, addressing the hopes currently instilled in tabletop play to act as a transformative activity. As such\, this form of play presents novel opportunities for immersive experience\, problem solving\, moral dilemma\, but perhaps most importantly\, communal storytelling.\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers at the event include acclaimed RPG designers Emmy Allan\, Kayla Dice\, Mike Mason\, Chris McDowall\, Samuel Mui\, and Zedeck Siew\, alongside writers\, historians and theorists such as Stu Horvath\, Timothy Linward\, Mark Pilkington\, and Simon O’Sullivan.\n\n\n\n\n\nAn exhibition of TTRPGs-inspired video games by artists Kitty Clark\, Uma Breakdown\, John Powell-Jones\, Petra Szemán\, and Holly White are hosted on computers and available to play for visitors throughout the whole event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe day culminates in live TTRPG play sessions of the games ECOMOFOS!! by artist David Blandy and SUPERZEROES by TTRPG game designer Samuel Mui\, amongst others\, inviting the audience to play with a deck of uniquely designed TTRPG playing cards.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event features a selection of merchandise and publications from Strange Attractor Press and independent London-based bookshop Igloo Tree.\n\n\n\n\n\nRead more about the event here.\n\n\n\n\n\nSymposium programme:\n\n\n\n\n\n11 – 11:15am: INTRODUCTION TO TTRPGS by David Blandy and Jamie Sutcliffe\n\n\n\n\n\nStarting off the symposium\, Jamie and David welcome visitors\, introduce the programme for the day and touch upon the world of TTRPGS.\n\n\n\n\n\n11:15 – 11:45am: ON ROLEPLAYING GAMES by Simon O’ Sullivan\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist and theorist Simon O’Sullivan will begin the symposium with a keynote talk considering the imaginative spaces and practices of role-playing games considered a distinct form of fiction.\n\n\n\n\n\n11:45am – 1pm: BETWEEN HEXCRAWLS AND BIOSPHERES with Holly White\, Zedeck Siew\, David Blandy (chair)\n\n\n\n\n\nExploring the myriad functions of speculative ecology in role-playing environments\, addressing the creation of flora\, fauna and folklore that work to colour and complicate diverse worlds of play in a time of ecological collapse.\n\n\n\n\n\n1:40 – 3pm: FROM ODD PASTS TO GRIMDARK FUTURES with Timothy Linward\, Kayla Dice\, Chris McDowall (chair)\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom privately imagined locales to vast\, communally written mega texts\, this discussion will focus on the process and practice of worldbuilding\, interrogating the various textures of myth and fabulation\, asking to what ends our novel worlds might be put.\n\n\n\n\n\n3 – 3:25pm: MONSTERS\, ALIENS\, AND HOLES IN THE GROUND by Stu Horvath\n\n\n\n\n\nTTRPG historian and co-host of the Vintage RPG Podcast Stu Horvath introduces his landmark new book Monsters\, Aliens\, and Holes In The Ground: A Guide to Tabletop Roleplaying Games From D&D To Mothership\, published in 2023 by the MIT Press.\n\n\n\n\n\n3:35 – 5pm: NAMELESS HORRORS! CREEPING FLESH! with Mike Mason\, Emmy Allen\, Sam Mui\, Mark Pilkington\n\n\n\n\n\nFocusing on the aesthetics\, politics\, and arresting experiences of horror\, this conversation will look to various exercises in the macabre\, horrific\, and supernatural to test role-playing’s capacities for innovative storytelling\, moral quandary\, and new forms of autobiographical fiction.\n\n\n\n\n\n5:15 – 8:30pm: LIVE TTRPG PLAY with David Blandy\, Samuel Mui\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing these insightful talks\, have a go at playing alternative TTRPGs with friends and other visitors! Collaboration is central to his practice\, examining communal and personal heritage and interdependence. With research spanning multiple forms of archives\, from fandoms to the archive of the body\, historical texts to academic libraries\, archaeology and ecological theory\, twitch streams and film archives\, Blandy weaves poetic works that explore the complexities of the contemporary subject. @david_blandy_\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent made in partnership with Strange Attractor Press and Igloo Tree.
