SUMMARY:Free Art Exhibitions - Legends
DESCRIPTION:Free Art Exhibitions Free Galleries in London \nWhat does it mean to mythologise a place\, person or memory? And how do these stories shape our perception of the world\, history and different cultures? These are the questions that Edouard Baribeaud\, Tae Kim and Tendai Mupita explore through richly layered visual narratives that blur the boundaries between ancient and contemporary\, spiritual and temporal. Legends\, the latest group show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s Wandsworth space\, presents a diverse collection of works that contemplate stories’ powerful psychological and emotional impact. \nFor this exhibition\, French-German artist Edouard Baribeaud explores the transformative and elusive qualities of light about identity and narrative. For example\, the diptych entitled George and Theodora is inspired by the vivid memory of a striking couple. The artist once encountered at a party and Paolo Uccello’s painting of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. In his work\, Baribeaud recasts the couple into a modern-day version of the myth\, but the roles are reversed so that the princess appears as the protagonist (the knight). The painting Sebastian similarly brings together the contemporary and the classical\, taking its departing point from another brief moment witnessed by the artist. In this case\, Baribeaud was struck by an illuminated entrance hall of a building at night. “The reflections of the street lights on the glass doors and the mirrors inside the building created an almost psychedelic effect\,” he says. “I thought it would be a perfect stage for a painting.” In the image\, an elegant man waits in the hall\, as if caught in the threshold between two worlds: the interior and the exterior in both a literal and metaphorical sense. Alongside these paintings\, Baribeaud has also presented three drawings\, created in collaboration with his partner Sophia Andreotti\, which take the format of tarot cards and illustrate imagined characters representing visions of the present and the future. \nSeoul-based artist Tae Kim’s delicate paintings form part of an ongoing series entitled The Faceless Gamer\, which explores the heightened emotional experiences of the gaming world and the complex notion of identity within this realm. Each work depicts a hybrid being\, a deity-like figure\, in a distinct psychological state. While these are Kim’s imaginations of players that she’s met in online battle games\, the portraits meditate on how the distinction between digital and actual is becoming increasingly blurred and how that might impact not only our perceptions but also how we connect and socialise. Significantly\, the artist employs techniques used in ancient Joseon dynasty portrait paintings\, which aristocrats and royalty mainly commissioned to illustrate their status\, wealth and intelligence. By drawing on this tradition\, Kim elevates alternative characters and hybrid digital experiences as part of a historically significant cultural shift that offers a fluid\, creative space for people from different backgrounds to come together and shape their narratives. \nZimbabwean artist Tendai Mupita’s practice is deeply rooted in the rich heritage and stories of Shona culture. Large portions of his compositions are composed of tiny brushstrokes that create intricate\, repetitive patterns that imply a sense of texture and movement and invite the viewer to examine the surface more closely. For this exhibition\, the artist presents a captivating new series of works that explore specific cultural ideas and rituals around death and grieving. For example\, many traditional Zimbabwean kitchens feature a stoop-like structure that serves a functional purpose as a shelf for cooking pots and water storage. Still\, it also becomes an altar where the coffins are laid\, and people go to communicate with their ancestors. Mupita depicts a figure kneeling at the stoop in one painting while a god-like form appears rising amidst the patterning. While this intimate connection between life and death may seem morbid from a Western perspective\, Mupita’s use of gentle\, uplifting hues suggests a sense of harmony and connectedness. \nSimilarly\, in another artwork\, a hybrid human figure appears draped over a coffin or grave; However\, there is undoubtedly something unsettling or even monstrous about the scene. The regularity and expansiveness of the blue and white patterning in the background have a calming effect. At the same time\, the organic\, circular forms nod to the natural life cycle. \nThese works initiate an intriguing dialogue between colour\, form and texture that emphasises art’s ability to both communicate complex non-verbal experiences and break down the boundaries between different cultures and histories.

SUMMARY:Making the West End a fashion destination
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about how Jewish designers innovated\, defied expectations and transformed the West End. \n\n\n\nJoin us and learn more about the stories of Jewish designers\, makers and retailers who made London’s West End a fashion destination. SUMMARY:Lancelot Ribeiro: Heads – In and Out of Our Time - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ben Uri Gallery & Museum\, 108a Boundary Road\, St John’s Wood\, London NW8 ORH – Open: 18 September–29 November\, Wednesdays to Fridays: 10 am – 5.30 pm.   \nThis revealing exhibition is part of Ben Uri’s principal focus on researching\, digitally documenting\, disseminating and celebrating the importance of the Jewish\, Refugee\, and broad Immigrant contribution to British visual culture since 1900 – see buru.org.uk and diasporaartists.net both resources within benuri.org. \nThe Ben Uri Research Unit (BURU) is honoured to partner with the Estate of Lancelot Ribeiro to present Lancelot Ribeiro: Heads—In and Out of Our Time\, borrowing its title from the artist’s long-planned but unrealised concept for an exhibition. Featuring 20 paintings and drawings\, it focuses on Ribeiro’s preoccupation with portraiture and imagined heads from two of the most innovative decades of his practice\, the 1960s and the 1990s. \nBorn into a Catholic Goan family in present-day Mumbai in 1933\, Ribeiro followed his older half-brother F N Souza to Britain in 1950\, after India’s independence and Partition. After returning to India and becoming an artist\, Ribeiro settled permanently in Britain in 1962. Inspired by Indian and Goan architecture and the Christian tradition in which he was raised\, he utilised his heads and portraits to explore concepts of power and evil\, described by one reviewer as: ‘Colonialists\, kings\, tyrants\, Christ (resurrected)\, tycoons\, women and thugs’ (Bombay Artist Aid Centre review\, 1961)\, among them the monumental Crowned King (c. 1963) and powerful King Lear (1964\, Ben Uri Collection). Ribeiro’s experiments with new materials\, among them polyvinyl acetate or PVA (a precursor of acrylic paint)\, sometimes mixed with other nontraditional media\, including string\, resulting in a set of radical\, faceless\, abstracted heads\, known as the Psychedelic Man series. In his later work\, Ribeiro often worked on a large scale\, employing brilliant acrylics mixed with elements of collage while disassembling\, reimagining and reinvigorating the head in works including the vivid blue Madonna\, Rising from the Banks of Main. Yet Ribeiro’s close friend and fellow poet\, Indian translator and critic R. Parthasarathy suggests that Ribeiro’s ‘true subject’ was always his ‘origins – Goan roots\, estrangement from India\, and exile in London’. \nA supporting display in the lower galleries features 20 stylistically diverse and innovative paintings\, sculptures\, and works on paper of heads and portraits from the Ben Uri collection by artists including Frank Auerbach\, David Breuer-Weil\, Dodo\, Alfred Harris\, Sarah Lightman\, Alfred Lomnitz\, Hormazd Narielwalla\, Oscar Nemon\, Mosheh Oved\, Paul Richards\, and Samuel Fyzee-Rahamin. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a series of related talks and events and a fully illustrated online publication with essays by contributors\, including the artist’s daughter\, Marsha Ribeiro\, poet and critic R. Parthasarathy\, and conservator Patricia Smithen.

SUMMARY:An Accidental History of Tudor England – Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:How did ordinary people live in Tudor England? This unique analysis unearths the ways they died to find out. Far from the intrigues of Hampton Court Palace\, Shakespeare’s plots and the Spanish Armada\, explore the history of everyday life\, and everyday death. \nThis was a world where farming\, building and travel were dangerous. Fruit trees killed more people than guns\, and sheep killed about the same number of people as coalmines. Men stabbed themselves playing football and women drowned in the hundreds while fetching water. \nFrom bear attacks in north Oxford to a bowls-on-ice incident on the Thames\, Steven Gunn and Tomasz Gromelski use a remarkable trove of sources and stories to put common folk at the heart of Tudor England\, bringing the reality of their world to life as never before.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Invention of British Art - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:You have to try really hard\, it seems\, to like British art. Even its admirers concede it has contributed little to world art history. Tate\, the closest thing we have to a gallery of British art\, assigns less than a quarter of its display space to works made before 1900. Outside Britain\, only one gallery in the whole world is dedicated to British art\, in Yale. Few people visit it. \nWhy is British art so overlooked? Is it because Britain itself has never been enthusiastic about art\, and indeed remains ill at ease with it today? Is it\, quite simply\, bad? Or has British art suffered an injustice\, its impact on the world unfairly disregarded? \nNone of these questions can be answered without a frank reassessment of the history of British art\, those who made it\, and those it was made for. Now\, leading art historian Bendor Grosvenor is taking on that challenge. Looking at key moments\, objects and individuals from every era\, he explores how they were shaped by their environment\, and why – above all – it took so long for the art from theses isles to actually become ‘British’. \nFrom folk art to the role of female artists\, from the influences of invaders to the territories of the British Empire\, the story of British art is just as much a story of Britain’s place in the world\, and its impact upon it\, as the art and artists themselves. \nBendor Grosvenor is an art historian specialising in Old Masters and British art. Best known from the BBC series ‘Britain’s Lost Masterpieces’ and ‘Fake or Fortune?’\, he has discovered a number of important paintings by prominent artists including Van Dyck\, Rubens\, Titian\, Gainsborough\, Beale and Lawrence.
