SUMMARY:From Home Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘From Home’ is a solo exhibition by the artist Xinan Yang\, opening in conjunction with the Moon Festival\, the lunar celebration honouring the full moon and the family union. The exhibition showcases two distinct series of Yang’s work\, each providing a profound reflection on family\, identity\, and the evolving concept of home. \n  \nXinan Yang is renowned for her ability to create spaces that bridge the realms of imagination and reality through brushes. After her last solo show\, Missing Place Missing Face\, she embarked on a new exploration using family photos to delve into belonging. This series poignantly explores geographical displacement and its impact on family dynamics and self-identity. By repainting family photos without depicting faces\, Yang investigates the collective memory and consciousness of how memory shapes social bodies and worlds. \n  \nYang’s work is imbued with rich personal and cultural symbolism\, often featuring motifs such as dogs\, moons\, snakes\, and birds. After leaving her hometown\, her dog became an emotional anchor for her parents\, symbolizing the deep familial bonds and emotional connections that persist despite physical distance. Birds in her work represent both freedom and the allure of the world beyond home\, mirroring the experience of many young people who leave home for study or work and return only occasionally\, much like migratory birds. These motifs highlight the tension between the desire for exploration and the enduring connection to home. \n  \nThe exhibition\, curated by Yu Ying Chan\, will include wall hangings that intricately blend personal narratives with broader cultural themes. These works will offer visitors a profound reflection on family\, identity\, and the ever-evolving concept of home. \n  \nFrom Home will be displayed in the Upper Gallery during gallery opening times from Wednesday\, 11 September to Monday\, 7 October. \nThe gallery is generally open: \n\nMonday – Tuesday: 12pm to 4 pm\nWednesday : 11 am to 3 pm\nThursday – Sunday: 12pm to 4 pm\n\nPlease note that gallery hours may change or close at short notice due to private events. To avoid disappointment\, please check our most up-to-date opening hours by clicking here or calling us on 020 8348 8716 the day before your visit.

SUMMARY:CRYPTIC - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘CRYPTIC 42’\, a solo show by David Begbie\, is organised by Cris Contini Contemporary and curated by Pasquale Lettieri and Sandra Sanson at the Crypt Gallery in London.\nThe exhibition encapsulates 42 years of David Begbie’s creative journey\, covering the period from 1982 to 2024.\nThe show delves into various themes\, such as the duality of angel and demons present within every individual\, the profound influence of primitive tribal art\, and the intricate beauty of the human form. Begbie’s sculptures\, predominantly crafted from transparent metal mesh\, challenge the viewer’s perception of space and matter\, appearing as ethereal\, floating three-dimensional drawings that defy gravity.\nThe earliest piece\, ‘RELIC 1982\,’ offers a glimpse of a skeletal structure that symbolizes humanity’s origins\, drawing parallels between historical and evolutionary references. In contrast\, the latest sculpture\, ‘CRYPTIC 2024\,‘ reflects the often hidden yet powerful impact that tribal art has had on his work\, revealing the complexity of human nature through a combination of primitive masks and floating angelic figures.\nAt the core of the exhibition is the juxtaposition of opposites—light and shadow\, physicality and illusion\, abstraction and realism. Begbie’s use of metallic industrial materials\, which appear almost weightless\, invites viewers to question the boundaries between form and substance and the tension between real and perceived. This mastery of medium and theme has defined his 42-year career\, culminating in a body of work that transcends materiality and speaks directly to the viewer’s imagination and perception.\n\n\nDAVID BEGBIE: CRYPTIC 42  \n8-16 OCTOBER 2024 \n\n\n\nThe Crypt Gallery \nSt Pancras New Church 165\, Euston Rd London NW1 2BA \n(Entrance via Duke’s Road) \n\n\n\n  \nOpening Hours \nMon-Fri 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM \nSat 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Lancelot Ribeiro: Heads – In and Out of Our Time - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ben Uri Gallery & Museum\, 108a Boundary Road\, St John’s Wood\, London NW8 ORH – Open: 18 September–29 November\, Wednesdays to Fridays: 10 am – 5.30 pm.   \nThis revealing exhibition is part of Ben Uri’s principal focus on researching\, digitally documenting\, disseminating and celebrating the importance of the Jewish\, Refugee\, and broad Immigrant contribution to British visual culture since 1900 – see buru.org.uk and diasporaartists.net both resources within benuri.org. \nThe Ben Uri Research Unit (BURU) is honoured to partner with the Estate of Lancelot Ribeiro to present Lancelot Ribeiro: Heads—In and Out of Our Time\, borrowing its title from the artist’s long-planned but unrealised concept for an exhibition. Featuring 20 paintings and drawings\, it focuses on Ribeiro’s preoccupation with portraiture and imagined heads from two of the most innovative decades of his practice\, the 1960s and the 1990s. \nBorn into a Catholic Goan family in present-day Mumbai in 1933\, Ribeiro followed his older half-brother F N Souza to Britain in 1950\, after India’s independence and Partition. After returning to India and becoming an artist\, Ribeiro settled permanently in Britain in 1962. Inspired by Indian and Goan architecture and the Christian tradition in which he was raised\, he utilised his heads and portraits to explore concepts of power and evil\, described by one reviewer as: ‘Colonialists\, kings\, tyrants\, Christ (resurrected)\, tycoons\, women and thugs’ (Bombay Artist Aid Centre review\, 1961)\, among them the monumental Crowned King (c. 1963) and powerful King Lear (1964\, Ben Uri Collection). Ribeiro’s experiments with new materials\, among them polyvinyl acetate or PVA (a precursor of acrylic paint)\, sometimes mixed with other nontraditional media\, including string\, resulting in a set of radical\, faceless\, abstracted heads\, known as the Psychedelic Man series. In his later work\, Ribeiro often worked on a large scale\, employing brilliant acrylics mixed with elements of collage while disassembling\, reimagining and reinvigorating the head in works including the vivid blue Madonna\, Rising from the Banks of Main. Yet Ribeiro’s close friend and fellow poet\, Indian translator and critic R. Parthasarathy suggests that Ribeiro’s ‘true subject’ was always his ‘origins – Goan roots\, estrangement from India\, and exile in London’. \nA supporting display in the lower galleries features 20 stylistically diverse and innovative paintings\, sculptures\, and works on paper of heads and portraits from the Ben Uri collection by artists including Frank Auerbach\, David Breuer-Weil\, Dodo\, Alfred Harris\, Sarah Lightman\, Alfred Lomnitz\, Hormazd Narielwalla\, Oscar Nemon\, Mosheh Oved\, Paul Richards\, and Samuel Fyzee-Rahamin. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a series of related talks and events and a fully illustrated online publication with essays by contributors\, including the artist’s daughter\, Marsha Ribeiro\, poet and critic R. Parthasarathy\, and conservator Patricia Smithen.

SUMMARY:Anna Hulačová at Each Place Its Own Mind - Free Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Edel Assanti presents Each Place Its Own Mind (17 January – 15 March 2025)\, featuring Czech artist Anna Hulačová among eight international artists. Hulačová’s innovative work bridges ecological themes with artistic experimentation\, offering a profound meditation on humanity’s bond with nature. \n\nHulačová contributes a series of striking concrete busts with honeycomb interiors\, created in collaboration with bees during their swarming season. These sculptures symbolize the ancient interconnection between humans and bees\, evoking a hybrid organism that reflects the porous relationship between body and consciousness. The pieces embody the exhibition’s theme of interwoven experiences across species\, exploring the shared psyche of all beings inhabiting a place. \nEach Place Its Own Mind engages with ideas from David Abram’s The Spell of the Sensuous (1996)\, reimagining humanity’s relationship with the natural world. It showcases an interdisciplinary mix of drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and installation\, addressing ecological\, cultural\, and ancestral narratives. Alongside Hulačová’s work\, the exhibition includes pieces by Mirtha Dermisache\, Noémie Goudal\, Sky Hopinka\, and others\, fostering a dialogue about the enchantment of the world and the interconnected web of existence. \nThe exhibition opens with a private view on 16 January 2025\, from 6-8 pm. \nAnna Hulačová (b. 1984\, Sušice\, Czech Republic) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts\, Prague (2012). She lives and works in Prague. Her work has been shown internationally\, including at the National Gallery\, Prague\, Czech Republic; Centre Pompidou\, Paris\, France; Baltic Triennial\, Vilnius\, Lithuania; Meyer Riegger\, Berlin\, Germany; and the Louis Vuitton Foundation\, Paris\, France. \n\nOpening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11am – 6pm

SUMMARY:Benedikt Tolar: GRINDCORE - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“The flexi and eccentric grinder sound is a kind of special meditation for me\, that long\, drawn-out OM…” Benedikt Tolar \n\nBenedikt Tolar’s creativity is based on constant observation of reality. In things that an ordinary person would pass by without noticing\, he already observes future artefacts in advance. The basis of his work has thus become primarily recycling\, to which ecological thinking has gradually been added. With his typically peculiar humour\, he critically reacts to the present\, excess material\, and lack of greenery. He creates unexpected contexts by connecting seemingly incompatible things – often even for himself. The resulting theme depends on the material\, properties\, shape\, and colour. The artist frequently loses control over the creation of the work; on the contrary\, it is the material that controls its author in this case. \nTolar’s entire work works with the principle of more or less controlled chance. The artist accumulates found or scrapyard items in his studio\, where (sometimes more\, sometimes less) Duchampian ready-made objects are subsequently created under his hands. He is fascinated by the rawness of objects\, and he often tries to preserve their original form as much as possible. At the same time\, however\, he usually works with complex\, artisanal and technically mastered procedures. To find the appropriate colour and surface structure\, he also experiments with coffee or water with salt\, galvanic plating or paints\, for which he uses the simple principle of gravity in the form of flowing\, spilling\, and dripping. \nThe name of the exhibition\, GRINDCORE\, refers to the main content of the exhibition\, which is primarily made up of hoods and roofs of old cars\, from which the author creates metal paintings by grinding their coloured layers. All this to the sound of an angle grinder reminiscent of the uncompromising Grindcore music style. The exhibition also includes the Dance of Death sculpture created from an old\, deformed bathtub\, which refers to the work Aj Vana Be…\, which is part of the Winter Lights 2025 festival at Canary Wharf. The author used 32 retired bathtubs as building material for this work. The giant living sculpture Aj Vana Be…* is the author’s response to the theme of water as a precious resource\, which he connects with the principles of up-cycling obsolete bathtubs\, an inherent part of socialist housing in high-rise buildings. The concave shape of the bathtubs creates space for a light show synchronized with music. Aj Vana Be… has been exhibited in Belgium\, Finland\, Slovakia\, and France in recent years and can be enjoyed in London at Mackenzie Walk\, Canary Wharf E14\, daily between 5 and 10 pm from 21 January till 1 February 2025. More info \n*VANA in Czech means bathtub. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING \nMonday 20 January 2025\, 18:30 – 20:30\nFree entry\, REGISTER HERE\nEXHIBITION DATES: 20 – 31 January 2025\nVENUE\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY\nOPENING HOURS:\nTue – Fri 10 am – 5 pm\nor by appointment – info@czechcentre.org.uk\n\nLinks:\nhttp://tolarbenedikt.com/\nhttps://www.artshifters.eu/ajvanabe\nhttps://www.instagram.com/tolar.benedikt/ \n

SUMMARY:David Burrows | Spooky Affects At A Distance
DESCRIPTION:IMT Gallery proudly presents Spooky Affects At A Distance\, a solo exhibition by David Burrows. Through fictional means\, the exhibition engages with contemporary politics and cultures and their aesthetics of appearance\, proposing a cosmopolitics modelled on the mysterious nature of black holes and derived from dreams\, mythology\, and Black Hole Ontology (being not as things appear). Featuring paintings\, drawings\, film\, and assemblages\, the exhibition draws on the concept of singularities\, their abstractive and transformative dynamics\, and their durations ruled by collapse and rejuvenation.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the month dedicated to women\, Cris Contini Contemporary is proud to present UNTETHERED\, a solo exhibition by artist Alexis Walters that explores the themes of memory\, identity\, and transformation.\n\nUNTETHERED is an intimate journey towards reconciling with one’s inner child\, a path that brings to light a creativity that had been suspended. Through suspended garments\, the artist evokes memory and its power to transform the past into something new. Each work originates from a process of metamorphosis: the past is not merely preserved but reworked\, infusing it with new energy and meaning.\nThe deep blue of the cyanotype on Arches paper envelops the works in an ethereal atmosphere where time seems suspended. The contrast between blue and white becomes a powerful metaphor for transformation\, balance between presence and absence\, memory and renewal. With its contact impression and light development\, the cyanotype process strengthens the connection between image and memory\, capturing traces that resurface with delicacy and intensity.\nUNTETHERED  is an invitation for reflection\, a bridge between past and present\, between what we have been and what we could become. This exhibition explores the theme of loss while also celebrating the power of transformation and renewal—resonating deeply with the spirit of March\, traditionally dedicated to women.\n\nThe exhibition will be open from March 14th to 29th\, 2025\, at Cris Contini Contemporary. It offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in an artistic experience that invites self-discovery through art.\n\n\n14 – 29 March 2025 \nCris Contini Contemporary\n1 Lonsdale Road\, W11 2BY London\nOpening Hours: Tue-Sat 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

SUMMARY:Read-Only Memory\, Pop-Up Video Installation by Lina A.
DESCRIPTION:Site-specific pop-up video installation by multidisciplinary artist Lina A.\n\nRead-Only Memory is Lina A.’s newest inquiry into the vulnerability and persistence of both personal and collective memories\, building upon the concepts of her 2024 solo show\, RAM. This immersive\, multi-channel video installation presents the viewer with a dizzying\, anarchic flow of fragmented imagery—lost\, found\, recovered\, personal\, and impersonal. Images bleed and writhe through stacked projections\, and an erratic soundscape enhances the feeling of disorientation and familiarity at the same time. The randomization of sequence interferes with linear narrative\, recalling the instability of memory and how memory decays\, overlaps\, and reforms. In Read-Only Memory\, Lina A. further explores the tension between preservation and loss\, the question of what remains archived and what is permanently lost to digital decay.

Her practice predominantly focuses on documentary photography and video\, often using analogue mediums and techniques to create intimate and observational narratives.\n\nGian Maitelli (b. 1990\, Brazil) is a contemporary photographer based in London. By observing the sensibility in the ordinary and the quotidian\, Maitelli’s photographic vision captures street moments with a humanistic and poetic approach.\n\nHüseyin Ovayolu was born in Gaziantep\, Turkiye. He studied Photography and Video at Istanbul Bilgi University on a full scholarship. He was among the first participants of the Documentary Photography School organised by the Photography Foundation. Through photography\, he seeks to narrate personal histories and collective memory. His artistic practice is rooted in geographies where land\, conflict\, and identity are deeply intertwined. He primarily produces work in the Middle East and Eastern countries\, focusing on how place shapes people’s lives\, memories\, and social fabric. Ovayolu is an artist who conveys personal stories and collective memory through the language of photography. He has been living in London\, UK\, since 2022.\n\n\n\nNacho Rivera (Madrid\, 1977) is a Spanish photographer and educator based in London. With a mindful and artistic approach\, the thread of human experience runs through his work. He delights in detail\, highlighting the subtle and the unexpected\, creating thoughtful\, serene and meaningful images\, with an emphasis on narrative. His work has been published in books and magazines such as The British Journal of Photography\, The Telegraph Luxury Magazine\, The Times\, AD Magazine\, House and Garden and GQ Magazine. His projects have been displayed in Museums\, Galleries and International Photography Festivals\, including The Mediterranean Museum in Spain\, The Hoxton Gallery and The Manchester Contemporary in the UK\, amongst others. As a photography teacher and mentor\, He has shared his knowledge and experience in schools such as Lycée Français Charles De Gaulle and Kings College in London. He has also participated as a panellist at Photography Festivals\, most recently at RevelaT in Barcelona. \n\n\n\nSemra Diana Halipoğlu (b. 1987\, Bulgaria) is a visual artist specialising in photography. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Akdeniz University\, majoring in Photography.\n\n\nHer practice explores themes of identity\, mythology\, and the hidden structures of consciousness\, often constructing handmade scenes that merge tactile materiality with symbolic narratives. Through her work\, Halipoğlu invites viewers into a space where inner worlds\, ancient myths\, and contemporary selfhood intertwine. She currently lives and works in London. \n\n\n\nSeren Şarapçıoğlu is a Brighton-based visual artist whose work navigates the fragile territories between memory\, identity\, nature\, and existence. Working primarily with photography\, she transforms her images through subtle manipulations\, bending the familiar into the unfamiliar. In her recent portraits\, the deliberate erasure of eyes dissolves certainty\, inviting viewers to confront the unseen emotional landscapes within each figure. Her practice drifts between documentary and experimental narrative\, creating porous spaces where image and memory blur. Through gestures of disappearance and transformation\, she explores the shifting thresholds between the human body and the world it inhabits.\n\n\n\n\n\nYiğit Günel is a London-based multidisciplinary photographer whose work centres around people-based stories\, captured through a meticulous approach to lighting and a focus on authenticity. Since founding CULT in 2022\, he has expanded his practice to include Cult Creative Meet-ups\, a platform for artists and creatives in East London to connect and openly discuss the mental health challenges within the creative industry. Yiğit was selected for the London Creative Network Artist Development Programme in 2021 with Four Corners and continues to exhibit his work both locally and internationally. His notable exhibitions include New Photography (2015) at Alan Istanbul and 34 Women 34 Portraits (2012) at the Antalya Film Festival\, among others. His work has been published in Photographing a Rebellion by Ozcan Yurdalan (2014) and Moscow Diary\, a self-publication in 2005. He has also lectured and conducted workshops on storytelling through photography\, advanced lighting techniques\, and portraiture\, most recently hosting ongoing monthly Cult Creative Meet-ups in East London.\n\nCurator Dr Nilay Islek is a London-based artist\, academic\, and curator originally from İzmir\, Turkey. She studied photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylül University and completed her PhD at the Department of Radio\, Television\, and Cinema at Ege University\, focusing on visual culture\, collective memory\, and conceptual photography aesthetics.\n\n\nKnown for her interdisciplinary approach that combines artistic production\, curatorial practice\, and education\, ISLEK has taught photography in various institutions over the years and actively participated in documentary\, conceptual\, and cross-cultural projects. In 2016\, she became the first female photographer from Turkey to be awarded the title of “X-Photographer” by Fujifilm.\n\n\n\nIn 2018\, she relocated to London after being awarded the prestigious “Exceptional Talent” artist visa by the United Kingdom. As an extension of the Artlens Visual Culture and Photography Workshop she founded in İzmir\, she established Artlens London Visual Art Atelier in 2019. ISLEK continues her artistic production and workshops in London\, where her interdisciplinary projects focus on themes of memory\, identity\, and place.\n“Selfhood” invites the audience not only to observe but also to confront themselves and explore the shared connections within their personal experiences.

SUMMARY:MISTER CLAY – LET’S COME TOGETHER - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Let’s Come Together by Mister Clay transforms the spaces of our Notting Hill gallery into an explosion of color and energy. Born from the fusion of New York–style wild writing and Italian creativity\, Mister Clay’s project focuses on his iconic “the Allucinati” (the Allucinated): essential\, vibrant figures that animate city walls and canvases with a message both simple and powerful. Unbound by banners or ideologies\, the Allucinati bring joy\, love\, and hope to those who feel marginalized\, igniting small “gentle revolutions” in a world that can sometimes stifle the imagination.\nWith Let’s Come Together\, Mister Clay reminds us that street art is\, above all\, a universal language capable of speaking to the heart before the eyes. We look forward to welcoming you into this universe of empathy and creativity\, where color becomes a vehicle of joy and hope.

SUMMARY:TRACES
DESCRIPTION:TRACES is the joint title for two solo exhibitions running concurrently at One Paved Court in September. Printmaker Loraine Monk presents a body of work tracing the history of social dissent and protest on the ground floor\, while Rachel Pearcey kicks over the traces with her textile works in the upper gallery. \nLoraine Monk creates images using both relief and etching processes\, using the act of cutting to make tactile\, the visceral anger of inequality and political disengagement. Her family were working-class Londoners; inspired by local and community history\, her background has influenced her politics\, academic research and artistic practice.  She has exhibited in a number of independent galleries\, museums and group shows\, including the International Original Print Exhibition\, the Society of Women Artists\, New English Art Club\, Printmakers Council and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. \nRachel Pearcey loves textiles and stitching and drawing and making things.  She stitches drawings and words onto second-hand\, vintage or antique linen\, cotton or flax. She creates unbreakable cups and bowls\, teapots and jugs with felt\, wool and linen. Softened with years of wear\, faded\, repaired and darned each piece she uses bears traces of a previous\, often now redundant\, life. Recycling is very important to her\, as she says “the thread with which I sew is the only thing I buy new”.  Her work was selected for this year’s Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts and has been widely shown across the UK and internationally. \n2-8 September 2024\nOpen daily 12 noon – 6pm\nOne Paved Court\, 1 Paved Court\, Richmond TW9 1LZ

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Lost & Found in Hong Kong - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, a group of history enthusiasts stumbled upon a diary in a soon-to-be-demolished building in Hong Kong. The diary belonged to Lam Ping-yu\, one of 24 naval officers sent to Britain for training during the Second World War. As their first mission in Europe\, many took part in the D-Day Landings\, as well as the Allied liberation of southern France. \nAt the time of its discovery\, Lam’s diary was the only known primary source on Chinese participation during D-Day. It reveals numerous first-hand stories about the realities of war\, featuring countless depictions of excitement\, frustration\, envy and even romance. \nIn 1945\, Lam also took part in Operation Armour\, devised by the British government to alleviate the dire situation in Japanese-occupied Hong Kong. His writings provide us with a glimpse into the city’s post-war recovery. \nAs we mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War\, come and visit the Soane Stable Yard to discover this fascinating area of military history\, told through stories\, objects and multimedia displays. \nThe exhibition is curated by Angus Hui and John Mak. Angus is an award-winning journalist-turned-historian. He holds an MPhil from the University of Cambridge and specialises in modern Chinese history and Hong Kong culture and heritage. John is a public policy professional\, who is an inaugural Obama Scholar\, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia honouree\, and an Asia 21 Next Generation Fellow of Asia Society.

SUMMARY:“A Window on the World” by Flog - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:DCG London is proud to present the debut UK solo show of French artist Flog\, whose vibrant and emotionally charged work has captivated collectors across Europe\, the U.S.\, and Asia. With his iconic “Human of Glass” series\, Flog explores the delicate tension between fragility and strength\, shaping a universe where pop culture\, childhood memories\, and dreamlike narratives converge.\n\nUsing a distinctive blend of spray paint\, acrylic\, and oil\, Flog breathes life into his translucent character—each figure a vessel of emotion\, memory\, and experience. Set against richly imagined backdrops\, these figures invite viewers into silent\, open-ended stories where interpretation becomes deeply personal. At once subtle\, romantic\, and at times unsettling\, Flog’s work is a poetic reflection on the human condition\, rendered with meticulous detail and profound sensitivity.\n\nThis exhibition at Dorothy Circus Gallery marks an exciting new chapter in Flog’s journey—his first solo show in the UK and a unique opportunity for London audiences to experience the depth and imagination of his evolving artistic universe.
