SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. Advertised end times may be subject to change.\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack History Month 2023 #SalutingOurSisters

SUMMARY:The Doko Challenge South
DESCRIPTION:Put yourself to the test\, Gurkha style! Take on our annual 5km Doko Challenge South. This unique event sees participants running in the footsteps of the ‘Bravest of the Brave’.  Based on a pivotal part of the Gurkha selection process\, we challenge you to take on a 5km course with a weighted Nepali Doko basket strapped to your back.   What is a Doko? A traditional Nepalese conical-shaped basket\, usually hand woven from bamboo\, fitted with shoulder straps and a ‘namlo’ (head strap) to support the load.  The baskets are used to carry a whole host of things\, from clothing to bricks!   A Historic Challenge Every British Army Gurkha Soldier will be familiar with the ‘Doko Race’.  During the renowned annual Gurkha recruitment drive\, the aspiring recruits are tasked with ascending a gruelling course in the foothills of the Himalayas carrying a ‘Doko’ loaded with 25kg of sand.  They must complete the course within 46 minutes to proceed through to the next round of selection.   Our Doko South Race Based on the traditional exercise\, we have mapped out an undulating\, cross-country course through Wimbledon Common.  On Sunday 16 June 2023\, we challenge you to complete the 5km route carrying a Doko basket weighted with 5kg\, 10kg or 15kg.  You can run\, jog\, or walk\, but those looking to push themselves can aim to beat the Gurkha recruitment time of 46 minutes\, or even the course record of 19 minutes 30 seconds!  Regardless of your time\, a coveted Doko Challenge medal and t-shirt awaits at the finish line.   Supporting Gurkha veterans and widows in Nepal Alongside keeping fit and challenging yourself\, you can take great pride in raising money to support our team in Nepal\, keeping our Gurkha veterans and widows safe and giving them the means to live with dignity.  We suggest you set a fundraising target of £150.  Your online fundraising page will be created automatically when you register\, and we will be on hand throughout to answer any queries you may have.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Lost & Found in Hong Kong - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, a group of history enthusiasts stumbled upon a diary in a soon-to-be-demolished building in Hong Kong. The diary belonged to Lam Ping-yu\, one of 24 naval officers sent to Britain for training during the Second World War. As their first mission in Europe\, many took part in the D-Day Landings\, as well as the Allied liberation of southern France. \nAt the time of its discovery\, Lam’s diary was the only known primary source on Chinese participation during D-Day. It reveals numerous first-hand stories about the realities of war\, featuring countless depictions of excitement\, frustration\, envy and even romance. \nIn 1945\, Lam also took part in Operation Armour\, devised by the British government to alleviate the dire situation in Japanese-occupied Hong Kong. His writings provide us with a glimpse into the city’s post-war recovery. \nAs we mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War\, come and visit the Soane Stable Yard to discover this fascinating area of military history\, told through stories\, objects and multimedia displays. \nThe exhibition is curated by Angus Hui and John Mak. Angus is an award-winning journalist-turned-historian. He holds an MPhil from the University of Cambridge and specialises in modern Chinese history and Hong Kong culture and heritage. John is a public policy professional\, who is an inaugural Obama Scholar\, Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia honouree\, and an Asia 21 Next Generation Fellow of Asia Society.

SUMMARY:An Accidental History of Tudor England – Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:How did ordinary people live in Tudor England? This unique analysis unearths the ways they died to find out. Far from the intrigues of Hampton Court Palace\, Shakespeare’s plots and the Spanish Armada\, explore the history of everyday life\, and everyday death. \nThis was a world where farming\, building and travel were dangerous. Fruit trees killed more people than guns\, and sheep killed about the same number of people as coalmines. Men stabbed themselves playing football and women drowned in the hundreds while fetching water. \nFrom bear attacks in north Oxford to a bowls-on-ice incident on the Thames\, Steven Gunn and Tomasz Gromelski use a remarkable trove of sources and stories to put common folk at the heart of Tudor England\, bringing the reality of their world to life as never before.

SUMMARY:Wartime Christmas at the Royal Hospital Chelsea
DESCRIPTION:Christmas at the Royal Hospital Chelsea has long been a season of joy and tradition – from the stirring of the Christmas pudding to the ceremonial cutting of the festive cake\, and the moving Christmas service in the Hospital’s Chapel. \nBut behind the warmth of these celebrations lies a remarkable story of resilience. As we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War\, join historian Martin Cawthorne for a poignant talk exploring how the Royal Hospital and its Chelsea Pensioners faced the challenges of wartime – even as bombs fell and rations tightened. \nDrawing from his acclaimed book The Royal Hospital Chelsea at War\, Martin will reflect on how the festive season unfolded during one of the darkest chapters in the Hospital’s history. Discover how Christmas became a symbol of hope\, compassion\, and duty on the Home Front\, even as the Hospital itself stood in the line of fire. \nThis is a moving and insightful event that honours the spirit of those who served – and those who kept the flame of Christmas burning through adversity. \nBook Christmas Entertainment in London
