SUMMARY:A Child's Guide to Brutalism
DESCRIPTION:Venture into new display of architecture with contains a strong theme of brutalism in both children and adults. \nWhat is brustalist architecture? A good example is the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Hayward Galary built in the 1960s. This architecture style has continued to impress public for over 50 years. A group of school children from Ashmole Primary School in Lambeth will explore this distinctive style of architecture and giving another views and response towards the art. \nThe display will offer an insight into the history of brutalism and how the 1960s buildings came to be.

SUMMARY:Lost Narratives: A Hidden World of Urbex Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Atlas Obscura for a talk on urban exploration — Urbex — and what it takes to photograph abandoned buildings all over the world. \nUrban Exploration has always been a popular pastime to rule breakers and renegades\, but with the advent of social media\, especially Instagram\, there has been a new rise in its visibility. Once only available to those who were willing to risk the dangers of entering decaying structures\, modern technology has made it possible for photographers to share what’s inside ruins around the world with the world. Viewing this practice through the eyes of an expert will help us uncover more about the compulsion to go off the beaten track and share these discoveries. \nThe talk will be given by urban explorerer and photographer Claire Alaxandra Powell\, and she’ll discuss how keeping secrets within the urbex community helps preserve these structures for the future\, and the history behind the places she’s photographed all over Europe. Claire herself has been hunting for ruins for the past decade in England\, Germany\, Italy\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, the United States\, and more\, and will bring this wealth of experience and knowledge to share. \nOur event will be hosted in the Asylum Chapel\, an 1824 chapel whose interior was ruined by an incendiary device during World War II. The interior\, almost entirely destroyed from the explosion\, remains in much the same state today.

SUMMARY:The 24/7 Bed: Privacy and Publicity in the Age of Social Media by Beatriz Colomina
DESCRIPTION:About this Event\nThe city is not what it used to be. What is private and what is public has become completely blurred. We can no longer think of distinct spaces for work\, play\, domesticity\, and rest. We are living in a 24/7 culture. Industrialisation brought with it the eight-hour shift and the radical separation between the home and the office or factory\, between rest and work\, night and day. Post-industrialisation collapses work back into the home and takes it further into the bedroom and into the bed itself. Networked electronic technologies have removed any limit to what can be done in bed. Millions of dispersed beds are taking over from concentrated office buildings. The boudoir is defeating the tower. This lecture explores the new role of the bed as the epicentre of labour\, post-labour and love in the age of social media \nAbout the Speaker\nBeatriz Colomina is the Howard Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture at Princeton University and a 2018–2019 fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. She writes and curates on questions of design\, art\, sexuality and media. Her books include Sexuality and Space (Princeton Architectural Press\, 1992)\, Privacy and Publicity: Modern Architecture as Mass Media (MIT Press\, 1994)\, Domesticity at War (MIT Press\, 2007)\, The Century of the Bed (Verlag fur Moderne Kunst\, 2015)\, Manifesto Architecture: The Ghost of Mies (Sternberg\, 2014)\, Clip/Stamp/Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X–197X (Actar\, 2010)\, Are We Human? Notes on an Archaeology of Design (Lars Muller\, 2016). She has curated a number of exhibitions including Clip/Stamp/Fold (2006)\, Playboy Architecture (2012) and Radical Pedagogies (2014). In 2016 she was co-curator of the third Istanbul Design Biennial. Her latest book is X-Ray Architecture (Lars Muller\, 2019). \nAbout the Lecture Series\nThis series supports outstanding scholarship in the history of architecture and allied fields\, building on the work of Professor Robin Evans (1944-1993). It encourages scholars working on the relationship between the spatial and social domains in architectural drawing\, construction and beyond. Evans’ work interrogated the spaces that existed between drawing and building\, geometry and architecture\, teasing out the points of translation often overlooked. From his early work on prison design and domestic spaces\, through to his later work on architectural geometry\, Evans sought to articulate the multiple points at which the human imagination could influence architectural form. His first book\, The Fabrication of Virtue\, analysed the way that spatial layouts provided opportunities for social reform via their interference with morality\, privacy and class. In The Projective Cast: Architecture and its Three Geometries\, Evans traced the origins of the humanist tradition to understand how human form influenced architectural drawing and construction\, focusing on aesthetic dimensions in the production of architectural space. This series will provide opportunities for the creation and/or dissemination of work by scholars working on similar questions of space\, temporality\, and architecture. In particular\, it supports work that breaks the boundaries of traditional disciplines to think though these complex networks involved in the space between human imagination and architectural production.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:Supermodels Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the eerie setting of a building site awaiting refurbishment\, multidisciplinary design and architecture studio Piercy&Company presents a performance of animated models of their buildings and projects – reconnecting our digital and physical worlds through a childlike sense of wonder and delight as their amazing models spring into life. \nResonating with the mysterious allure of miniature objects with lives of their own – think doll’s houses\, cuckoo clocks and model railways – Supermodels employs mechanical automata\, projection mapping\, scent and lighting to create a new\, more engaging way of communicating architectural concepts. \nExploring exciting new possibilities for an age-old form of architectural communication\, Supermodels distils the studio’s 20 years of research into the sensory and haptic dimensions of architecture. Each model encapsulates the essence of Piercy&Company‘s design approach to building typologies spanning from commercial developments to churches. \nThe models were handmade by Piercy&Company’s architecture team to explore and test experiential aspects of architecture\, including the spatial\, the tectonic and the tactile. \n  \nDates \nFriday 25 November until Sunday 11 December \n  \nOpening Hours \n12pm-7pm Monday to Friday \n12pm-5pm Saturday and Sunday \nor by appointment supermodels@piercyandco.com \n  \n  \nAddress \nJahn Court\, Regent Quarter \n34 York Way (entrance of York Way) \nLondon \nN1 9AB

SUMMARY:Breaking Ground – A Regenerative Approach exhibition
DESCRIPTION:How does architecture respond to our climate and ecological emergencies? How does the urban design respond to women’s safety and community cohesiveness? \n\n\n\nGbolade Design Studio is celebrating 5years of practice\, and ‘Breaking Ground’ is set up as a provocation to the public. We are living with the consequences of an extractive design and construction system. How must we now act to become responsible and inclusive stewards of our future. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition explores five key themes using the practices’ projects which adopt sustainable and regenerative approaches to respond to some of these pressing issues in society. Themes include; city-shaping\, retrofit\, net-zero homes\, community-building\, and innovation in construction. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition itself has been designed to be as sustainable and regenerative as possible\, with recyclable boards being used and an after-exhibition reuse plan. The practice has chosen to work with local businesses and suppliers\, including printers\, plant suppliers\, and catering companies. \n\n\n\nThe venue\, The Africa Centre\, was selected due to its close proximity to Southwark Station\, with the practice encouraging all visitors to use public transport\, rather than driving\, wherever possible. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition has been designed with hopes to inspire the next generation of built environment specialists to challenge ideas of what a regenerative future might be. To this end\, Gbolade Design Studio have arranged school tours with local primary schools.

SUMMARY:Vladimir 518: Rethinking Architectural Narratives in Czech Architecture 1958 -1989
DESCRIPTION:Organised as part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture\, this event will see Czech visual artist and musician Vladimir 518 discussing his seminal publication ‚Architecture 58 – 89‘. \nWhile post-war architecture from the former Eastern Bloc is highly regarded by foreign architects and students\, its perception in the Czech Republic is marked by considerable ambiguity. Often\, it is negatively labelled as communist architecture of low value\, deemed highly ideological\, and seen as in need of replacement. Utilising two significant milestones—Expo 58 in Brussels and the 1989 Velvet Revolution— Vladimir 518 will reassess the Czech and Slovak architectural landscape during this period with the aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation in order to reset the perspective of the general public and preserve those landmarks for future generations. \n  \n‚The overwhelming body of so-called communist architecture has little in common with this ideology in terms of its formal aspects\, yet a layer of negative emotions and misunderstanding still clings to it. Unfortunately\, in the long term it has been impossible to find a healthy relationship with this now historical architecture\, which is why one important building after another is disappearing from the streets of our cities. If we as a society fail to preserve at least what is left of the quality buildings from the beginning of the second half of the 20th century\, we will erase a piece of our own history and cultural memory once and for all.‘  Vladimir 518 \n  \nOrganised by the Czech Centre as part of London Festival of Architecture 2024. \nImage: Photo: Vitkovice Archive a.s.

SUMMARY:Klára Hosnedlová: Echo
DESCRIPTION:11 Feb 2026 – 29 Mar 2026 \nWhite Cube Bermondsey will open a solo exhibition of work by Klára Hosnedlová\, marking the artist’s debut with the gallery. Klára Hosnedlová’s corporeal\, immersive installations address utopian visions and imagine our future\, post-nature selves. Conceived as part-stage\, part-laboratory\, ‘Echo’ combines her signature photo-realist embroideries with architectural elements\, large-scale sculpture and textile works and living mycelium fungus. Incorporating performance elements and accompanied by a soundscape\, the artist choreographs a fictional narrative around themes of flux and transformation. \n\nKlára Hosnedlová (b. 1990\, Uherské Hradiště) is a Czech artist based in Berlin whose practice examines historical perception through utopian design and architecture. Responding to specific sites\, she researches experimental projects and past futurisms\, exploring how nostalgia shapes contemporary culture. Drawing on science fiction\, technology and ecological systems\, Hosnedlová creates immersive installations with a tactile\, “futuristic archaeological” atmosphere. Part of the first post-Communist Czech generation\, she is inspired by modernist and Brutalist architecture in Central and Eastern Europe and its intersections with politics\, history and mythology. Her work combines sculpture\, performance\, photography and embroidered panels and has been exhibited internationally\, including at Kunsthalle Basel\, Kestner Gesellschaft and the Lyon Biennale. \nFor more information about the exhibition please visit White Cube Bermondsey website \nOrgansied by White Cube Berdmonsey.
