SUMMARY:Made in Prague: My Sunny Maad - Movie
DESCRIPTION:When Herra\, a Czech woman\, falls in love with Nazir\, an Afghan man\, she has no idea about the life that awaits her in Afghanistan under US rule\, nor about the family she is about to join. \nWhile studying Economics in Prague\, blue-eyed\, blonde Helena falls in love with her schoolmate Nazir and moves with him to Kabul as his wife a few months later. She quickly assimilates into the family dynamics by changing her name to Herra and swapping a single western-style of life for her husband’s large family in post-Taliban Afghanistan. \n  \n \nShe adores the grandfather\, allies with her sister-in-law against her abusive husband. She supports her teenage niece\, who is to be married against her will\, striking a balance between the sheltered life of a married woman in a burka with her work for the US Embassy. But it is Maad\, an abandoned child who she and Nazir adopt\, who brings love and sunshine to her family. Leaving politics in the background while focusing on the family relationships\, Pavlátová uses her skills as an award-winning animator (1993 Oscar Nominee\, winner at the Berlin and Annecy Film Festivals) to bring the touching storey vividly to life\, letting Herra and Maad drive the narrative with their insightful matter-of-fact commentary. \nMichaela Pavlátová\, Czech Republic\, France\, Slovakia 2021\, 81 mins\, English subtitles\nFeature Films Annecy Film Festival 2021 Jury Award

SUMMARY:Siddhartha's Journey at The Engine Room - Object Animation
DESCRIPTION:Siddhartha’s Journey is a multi-sensory show and installation for adults and families\, using shadow theatre\, object animation and collages. \n“The river knows everything. You can learn everything from it.”\nTogether with young Siddhartha\, you’ll be taken on a journey along the river\, across collage landscapes\, through images and stories.\nThe novel Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse inspires this multi-sensory theatre show. It uses object animation\, shadow theatre and paper collage to explore Siddhartha’s search for more profound knowledge of the human self and the world around him. The show is a playful and light response to the philosophical book and invites adult and family audiences to be imaginative and immerse themselves in the story. It is part show\, a part installation where audiences can make their collages inspired by extracts from the book. \n“Aesthetically pleasing”\, “ambient soundscape successfully transports the viewer to a peaceful state of mind” (Wandsworth Arts Fringe Review on Sunday Morning\, July 2021). \nSupported using public funding by Arts Council England. \nCreated by Alena Skalova (https://www.alenaskalova.com). \nPresented by Missing Pages Theatre.

SUMMARY:Kunstkamera + Intro by Gareth Evan
DESCRIPTION:This animated movie is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organised by the Czech Centre London. The popular multi-genre festival is back again for its 26th edition. Representing one of the oldest national celebrations of European culture in the UK\, the festival presents an exciting programme covering film\, music\, science\, visual art and literature in various venues across London and beyond. Take your pick and immerse yourself in Czech culture this fall. \nA tantalising view of the Czech surrealist and filmmaker Jan Svankmajer’s private collection of artefacts and objects\, full of beauty and magic. In Kunstkamera\, Czech surrealist Jan Švankmajer opens the door to his Horní Staňkov Castle\, inviting us into his home where the living space is intricately and organically intertwined with an exhibition space filled with installations\, paintings\, puppets and products of nature\, but also an unmade bed\, his bedside table\, an open bottle of beer and a dog bowl. Horní Staňkov is home to the eclectic private collection that Švankmajer has built throughout his life\, inspired by the kunstkameras of Rudolf II and André Breton. Now providing a tantalising view into his world through the sequence of objects and an interpretation of the collection\, Svankmajer’s inner landscape is captured on film for posterity and shared with his fans from all over the world. A treat not to be missed.
