SUMMARY:Suntou Susso: live album launch
DESCRIPTION:Born into the 700-year-old Griot tradition of West Africa\, Suntou Susso is deeply connected to his heritage\, which drives his vision as a musician. Griots are entrusted with the responsibility of preserving the history\, culture and values of their people. They are historians\, storytellers\, community builders\, peace bringers and teachers. \nThrough music and song\, Griots carry the identity of the people through generations. Yet the relevance of Griot teachings extends far beyond their West African roots: the whole world could do with a little more peace\, acceptance and care – for one another and for the planet. These themes permeate his new album Jaliya Silokang – The Path of a Griot\, from new compositions about Gambian environmental struggles with climate change to reimaginations of ancient songs centered around love and family. \nAt this one-off performance in London Suntou will launch his album\, performing it live for the first time alongside a 10-piece ensemble. Expect an intimate\, energetic and life-affirming show as Suntou and his band take you on multiple journeys: to the sunshine of Africa; his culture; and through the album’s messages of love\, peace\, and equality.

With special guests\, poets and artists Sonia Quintero\, Simo Lagnawi and Roy McFarlane. Plus our hosts for the night Akila Richards and DJ Fever2Ray from African Night Fever. \n\n\nOn the night\, expect Simo in full flow with his tribe of Gnawis for a full-power performance\, poetry readings by Roy McFarlane and Sonia Quintero and a conversation with Roy McFarlane hosted by Akila Richards. \n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, 11 May\, 7-9 pm\nSt. Margaret’s House. 21 Old Ford Road London E2 9PL\n£0-10 Entry \nBOOK NOW \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the poets and musicians\nAkila Richards is a poet\, writer and spoken word artist who has created work for theatre\, exhibitions\, audio installations\, film and digital platforms at cultural and artistic events. Her most recent work is her Rest Experience initiative\, which emerged from a residency at the Brighton Dome. She is a guest editor of Covert Magazine and her work is featured in the Glimpse anthology by Peepal Tree Press. Commissions included Witness Stand at Brighton Festival 2022 and a location-based story for the We Hear You Now audio journey in the South Downs National Park. Akila’s poetry publication Ritual for a Mango was published in 2024. She is writing her first novel. \nSonia Quintero. I am a queer Colombian–British poet\, have lived in Newham for several years. I am passionate to community knowledge production\, co-production\, and participatory methodology as well as grassroot movements promotion. I have become an active member of the community and have led several projects that combine my passion for poetry and LGBTQ+ rights. Seven years ago\, I started Newham Poetry Group\, a grassroot initiative that facilitates access to creative writing for people who speak English as their second or third language as well as engaging with marginalised communities through artistic activities such as open mics\, spoken words or even publishing their own books. \nI also co-founded Queer Newham and Borderless local initiatives that bring visibility to LGBTQ+ issues in my area and support LGBTQ+ refugees. We work closely with the LB Newham\, community groups and neighbours to tackle discrimination\, hate crime and other issues that impact us. Simultaneously\, I founded Casa Sofia in Colombia\, my home country. Casa Sofia is a collective of creative community artists that use artistic approach to connect people\, challenge dispowenred narratives and support local initiatives. \nSimo Lagnawi. Gnawa master Simo Lagnawi is an ambassador of Moroccan culture in London. With 8 albums under his belt including 4 solo records\, 3 albums with fusion project Electric Jalaba and a further disc with his Gnawa Blues all-stars\, Simo has released through Strut and Waulk Records\, his first solo album ‘Gnawa London ‘ featuring in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World’ albums. He has also been nominated as Best Newcomer and Best Artist in their annual awards. \nSimo has performed on media outlets such as BBC World service\, CNN World\, BBC 3\, BBC 6 and Vox Africa\, and performed at a host of festivals including Glastonbury\, Secret Garden Party\, Latitude and Boom Town. \nThe Moroccan musician was raised in the Gnawa tradition and always remains true to his musical heritage. Each performance is a wholehearted expression of devotion from the UK’s leading Guembri player – a North-African bass instrument constructed from wood and cowhide\, with gut strings. Whether through crossover groups such as Electric Jalaba and the Gnawa Blues All-Stars\, or through hosting traditional ceremonial evenings – known as Lilas – the intention is always to bring the same healing energy through to the fore in each new creation and spread the Gnawa tradition through the UK in the process. \nRoy McFarlane FRSL\nRoy McFarlane is a Poet\, Writer and former Youth & Community Worker born in Birmingham of Jamaican parentage\, spending most of his years living in Wolverhampton and the Black Country and now living in Brighton. He is currently the National Canal Laureate. \nHe’s the former Birmingham Poet Laureate and co-editor of Celebrate Wha? Ten Black British Poets from the Midlands (Smokestack). His three collections are published by Nine Arches Press: Beginning With Your Last Breath and The Healing Next Time (shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and longlisted for the Jhalak Prize) and his third collection Living by Troubled Waters is out now. \nHe’s a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University of Wolverhampton. \nAfrican Night Fever. In 2003\, Ebou Touray from the Gambia and David Sijale from Tanzania\, launched a monthly music night at the Babylon Lounge in Hove\, showcasing the music and culture of Africa and the African diaspora. African Night Fever became a hub for local talent as people flocked to the nights in order to dance\, mingle and experience a mix of Live bands and DJ sets. From that\, sprang friendships\, sharing and genuine community spirit. \nAfrican Night Fever continues to evolve and partners with local venues and promotors throughout the UK to share a taste of African and Caribbean culture\, belonging and community to a diverse range of audiences. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Poetry Room\nPoetry Room is our popular evening of poetry\, music and conversation\, which we have organised for years. We bring together the UK’s finest poets\, thinkers\, and musicians to provide a diverse chilled ambience as we consider the big issues for the African\, Caribbean\, Asian and Global Majority communities. With special guests\, poets and artists\, Poetry Room has grown beyond Sussex and is now on tour once or twice a year. SUMMARY:Ghana Party in the Park
DESCRIPTION:The world is now coming to Africa!” proclaimed the Guardian in a recent article on the global popularity of Africa’s most exciting cultural export: Afrobeats. Beyond the music\, demand for African food is also skyrocketing worldwide. For those looking for an authentic African experience\, London’s Ghana Party in the Park Festival is just the ticket! Dance to afrobeats\, feast on traditional cuisines and admire spectacular Ghanaian costumes\, all for as little as £20! \n\n\n\nHeld in Enfield’s Trent Park\, the annual outdoor festival will be attended by a crowd of 10\,000\, making it the world’s biggest Ghanian event outside of Ghana\, attracting overseas visitors from Europe\, the USA\, Canada and of course\, Ghana itself. \n\n\n\nAfrobeats has become one of the most beloved music genres across the globe\, with artists such as US superstar Drake and British grime artist Dave featuring on chart-topping afrobeat anthems. Whilst organisers remain tight-lipped about this year’s music line-up until the official announcement in June\, the event guarantees big names and fresh sounds\, with Mr Eazi\, Tion Wayne\, and Chip having graced the Ghana Party in the Park stage in recent years. \n\n\n\nAnd\, of course\, no Ghanaian festival would be complete without food. Lots of it! From Jollof and suya to bofro and sobolo\, Ghana Party in the Park promises the very best in West African cuisine\, on top of which\, the UK’s leading World Food brand Tropical Sun will be sampling their delicious snacks and drinks at their stand. Our recommendation: Tropical Sun’s world-famous Coconut Peanuts\, which are quickly becoming one of the most popular snacks in West Africa! \n\n\n\nTickets are priced from £20 and are available from the usual outlets\, including Shoobs and Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, including line-up announcements\, visit the Ghana Party in the Park website – www.gpitp.com

SUMMARY:The Man Behind the Microphone - Free Online Film Screening [MARSM Digital]
DESCRIPTION:An arresting story of love and family\, stardom and music. \nHedi Jouini\, known as the “Frank Sinatra of Tunisia” is the most popular musical star in the country’s history and a celebrated singer\, composer and oud player across the Arabic-speaking world. His long lasting career\, that began in the 1930s\, spanned almost five decades\, struck at the heart of the post-colonial social and political upheaval of Tunisia. To this day\, Jouini’s music inspires both revolutionaries and conservatives alike and has been an influential soundtrack to their ongoing search for identity in the wake of the Arab Revolutions. \nBut why did he keep his fame hidden from his family? What dark secrets did he keep from the nation that worshipped him? ‘The Man Behind the Microphone’ reveals the incredible story behind a man and his music\, and offers fascinating insight into Tunisia’s cultural evolution. The film builds a profound portrait of the godfather of Tunisian music – father to a nation\, but not always to his family.

SUMMARY:Speed Caravan / Ghoula / Gnawa London (Stances Festival- مواقف)
DESCRIPTION:Now in it’s 2nd edition\, Stances- مواقف: North African Multimedia & Performance Festival explores and celebrates the daring visions of contemporary artists from North Africa and the diaspora. With more than a dozen events over a 3 week period\, this triple-bill is an all star line up showcasing some of North Africa’s most moving acts and the closing performance of STANCES مواقف festival. \nRaï | Gnawa | African | Electronics | Chaabi | Rock | Trance \nThis is a ticketed event. Tickets available through Rich Mix. \nSPEED CARAVAN\nFuelled by the creative fire Mehdi Haddab\, Speed Caravan is the Paris-based quartet charged towards a psychedelic horizon. Taking traditional Algerian influences and the unique appeal of Raï genre\, the band rips through unstoppable electronic beats\, grooves and raw rock energy. Haddab\, a virtuoso oud player\, has turned it’s classical role on its head\, instead turning the oud into unapologetic rock and roll instrument. With their first album\, Kalashnik Love\, Mehdi and his Speed Caravan have created a ‘contemporary music caravan’; as Songlines writes: “Haddab has fused history and technical brilliance with rage and energy\, and created something quite phenomenal.” \nGHOULA (A/V set)\nIn Tunisia\, music has been a generational vehicle for popular symbols\, images and myths. Despite its small size\, Ghoula sees his native country as a north African crossroad where legacies came to settle. As a producer and multi-instrumentalist posing his sounds on a backdrop of captivating images\, Ghoula creates genre-defying sets through both acoustics and samples. Obsessed with North African multimedia heritage\, Ghoula has been digging up vinyls from flea markets and old Tunisian medinas\, bringing back vestiges of forgotten music and kiKitsch visuals\, all cooked on top of contemporary upbeat dance rhythms. \nGNAWA LONDON\nLed by Moroccan Gnawa artist and award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music Simo Lagnawi\, the band pays its own unique tribute to North Africa’s most prolific musical tradition and sacred trance music. His solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ released on Waulk records was featured in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ as he’s also been nominated in their ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Artist’ categories. Whether you’re a newcomer or veteran to the genre\, Gnawa London is a force to be reckoned with. \nThis event is 16+.\nRich Mix is wheelchair accessible. \nThis event has been made possible by the generous support of Al Araby TV and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:KaddalMerrill - Rain Over Nubia tour opens in London
DESCRIPTION:Egyptian\, Nubian and British musical traditions combine to create a unique fusion \nKaddal Merrill is the collaboration of classically trained Egyptian flautist Fayrouz Kaddal (High Dam Band\, Africairo) and innovative British folk fiddler Daniel Merrill (Dead Rat Orchestra). Backed by Egyptian master percussionists including Ayman Mabrouk (who has appeared with the likes of Fathy Salama and Gilberto Gil) their first UK tour opens with London date at Bloomsbury’s atmospheric Horse Hospital in on 12 August with a support set from Dead Rat Orchestra. \nCombining traditionally melodic instrumentation of flute and violin\, KaddalMerrill weave together an uplifting and joyous fusion of Egyptian\, Nubian and British musical traditions. Underpinned by exuberant Egyptian percussion and the polyrhythmic drum grooves of Sudanese dance\, this is music that invites you not so much on a journey but into the intimate space of the music’s creators\, as they explore their cultural and musical roots. \nThe intricate melodies of Kaddal’s flute and Merrill’s violin dive\, dance and spin through the heady beats of traditional Middle Eastern drums. Both sun soaked and rain drenched\, this intimate music speaks of musicians probing their imaginings of place\, culture and identity. \n‘This is music we’ve had in mind for some time\, since I started spending time in Egypt six years ago’ said Daniel. ‘We always thought that the mix of cultures would provide fertile ground for our creativity’ added Fayrouz ‘but the results have taken us to another place altogether’. \nDaniel Merrill is best known for his work with the lusciously bearded free folk ensemble Dead Rat Orchestra. For the last six years he has been travelling to Egypt to make music in Cairo and Alexandria\, becoming fascinated with the music of Nubia. Fayrouz Kaddal has performed and recorded with likes of AfriCairo and High Dam Band\, exploring the African aspects of Egypt’s heritage. Additionally she is researching the effect of displacement on the music of the Nubian people. \nHear samples from the album and see Egyptian concert footage at http://www.kaddalmerrill.com \nThe debut KaddalMerrill album Rain Over Nubia will be released on CD and download on Antigen Records\, (Antigen 311) on August 12 to coincide with the tour. It features masterful performances from musicians from Egypt\, Sudan and Eritrea. Alongside percussion duo Bouda Abdul-Yazeed and Wessam Moktar\, contributors include Ahmed Omar (Eritrean/Egyptian bass player and founder of AfriCairo)\, Ashraf Awad (Sudanese Oud player with The Nile Project) Zizo Tag (Egyptian Oud player and sometime Pauline Oliveros collaborator) and Ahmed Samir Rashwan (saxophonist with RT Nuba). \nRecorded between Krouma Camp\, Soheil Island in Aswan\, The Sudanese Club in Alexandria\, and El Warsha Studios\, Giza\, the album is packaged with the beautiful illustrations of Egyptian artist Rana Kadry.
