SUMMARY:Music Hath No Borders - South African Buskaid Ensemble in Concert - 21.08.26
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical fundraising concert with ten members of the internationally renowned South African Buskaid Ensemble – a performance of live classical music from Handel and Elgar to township Kwela music. \nThis is a poignant venue for Buskaid: Buskaid’s Founder\, Rosemary Nalden\, is the daughter of the late Charles Nalden CBE\, one of Coram’s most distinguished foundlings. The Buskaid musicians are themselves no strangers to hardship: like Coram\, Buskaid offers transformative opportunities for less advantaged young people. \nFor this musical celebration\, Rosemary has chosen music to link both charities\, including the Chaconne from Terpsichore by Handel\, Coram’s most famous benefactor\, and Elgar’s Sospiri\, honouring Rosemary’s father\, an accomplished harpist who loved the music of Edward Elgar. The concert will end with a rousing burst of township ‘Kwela’ music\, arranged by the Buskaid musicians themselves. \nTickets and Timings \nTickets can be booked on Eventbrite. \nAll tickets include a welcome drink\, and private access to the Foundling Museum‘s exhibition\, including the special exhibition display\, 300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season. \n6 pm: Access to the Foundling Museum for all guests. \n7 pm-9 pm: Concert with interval. \nAbout Buskaid \nThe Buskaid Music School was founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the less privileged local community in Diepkloof Soweto. At its inception\, it comprised just 15 children; its current membership stands at 82. To meet this demand\, in 2002 Buskaid initiated a teacher-training course for all its students; all the musicians playing tonight are employed by Buskaid as highly-skilled string teachers. \nThe Buskaid Ensemble is world-renowned for its high-performance standards and its innate grasp of musical style\, and as a result\, has undertaken 28 international tours to Europe and the Americas. It is the only African orchestra to have performed at the BBC Proms. \nThe Ensemble has collaborated with many distinguished artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Melvyn Tan\, Steven Isserlis and Karl Jenkins. It has performed in the presence of numerous dignitaries\, notably the late Nelson Mandela\, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, King Charles III\, and Michelle Obama. \nProgramme \nJean-Philippe Rameau – Air pour les Guerriers; Entrée De Polymnie; Contredanses I & II \nHenry Purcell – Fairest Isle; Rondeau; If Love’s a Sweet Passion; Chaconne \nEdward Elgar – Sospiri (Sighs) \nJean Sibelius – Impromptu \nGeorge Frideric Handel – Terpsichore HWV 8b: Chacconne \nKwela\, Afro-jazz and Afro-pop (Arr. Buskaid musicians) \nBook Classical String Ensembles for Events in the UK via Music for London.

SUMMARY:SIR RICHARD BISHOP + C JOYNES
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nSIR RICHARD BISHOP\nC JOYNES\nSaturday 11 October\nChats Palace\, 42-44 Brooksby’s Walk\, London\, E9 6DF\n7.30pm | £14 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/V7e42376f168 \nSIR RICHARD BISHOP is renowned for his mercurial guitar-playing for 26 years with Seattle ethno-delic legends Sun City Girls\, but he has wrought a distinguished solo canon as well. He combines soulfulness and advanced technique with a panache that’s nearly unrivalled among today’s guitarists. Bishop strums spiritual with incantatory ragas\, free-folk excursions\, crystalline flamenco flourishes\, ruddy Appalachian folk\, Middle Eastern-tinged fantasias and gypsy arabesques. This is eclecticism done with respect and third-eye-dilating filigree; his compositions attain a sepia-toned wistfulness and a psychedelic complexity. \nBishop’s first solo record\, Salvador Kali\, was released by John Fahey’s esteemed Revenant Records label in 1998. Locust Music issued his second record\, Improvika (2004)\, which consisted of nine extemporaneous pieces for solo acoustic guitar. More recently Tangier Sessions\, was released by Drag City in 2015. It consists of a series of improvisations recorded in Tangier\, Morocco in 2014 using a 19th century parlour guitar of mysterious origin. Bishop’s latest album\, Oneiric Formulary\, was released by Drag City in 2020\, whilst a new LP called Hillbilly Ragas will be released this September. \nhttps://sirrichardbishop.com/ \nC JOYNES has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar over the last decade\, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North & West African music\, and lifting proto-minimalist and improvised techniques from the European classical and avant-garde traditions. Joynes has released 10 albums to date\, including ‘Poor Boy On The Wire’ (2021)\, his first solo album dedicated wholly to the electric guitar; ‘The Borametz Tree’ (2019)\, recorded with long-term fellow travellers Dead Rat Orchestra; and ‘The Wild Wild Berry’\, a collaboration with singer Stephanie Hladowski. He has recorded a number of sessions for BBC Radio 3. He has also played extensively across the UK\, Europe and the USA\, sharing bills with a broad range of performers including Shirley Collins\, Martin Carthy\, Marc Ribot\, Richard Dawson\, Alasdair Roberts\, Jack Rose\, Josephine Foster\, Six Organs Of Admittance and 75 Dollar Bill. \nShifting away from the electric guitar of his most recent solo activities\, Joynes is currently exploring the uses of an amplified archtop guitar\, exploiting the instrument’s potential by placing intricate parlour music alongside overdriven garage blues throw-downs and the brittle ringing tones of free improvisation. \nhttp://cjoynes.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:L.A. Salami meets Stage Door Guy
DESCRIPTION:L.A. SALAMI: \nAs much a philosopher as a popsmith\, articulate and versatile. One of the premier lyricists of his generation\, he remains curious\, still distinguishing the illusory from the eternal\, the true from the beguiling; keeping the faith\, in his own cynical yet impassioned way. \nL.A. Salami (Lookman Adekunle Salami) is a singer/songwriter from London\, known for crafting magnetic blues-rock songs with a postmodern twist. His love for music began when he first heard Bob Dylan on the radio\, subsequently leading him to explore more blues and folk music and inspiring him to write his own songs; unfortunately\, however\, he could not afford his own instrument and wasn’t introduced to one until he was given a guitar for his 21st birthday. After three months of soul-searching\, tapping into different creative avenues\, and sleeping rough\, Salami eventually had his first few songs written and set out to land some gigs. Success soon came knocking after relentless gigging\, starting with a tour support slot for Lianne La Havas in 2012. The rest is history. \nSTAGE DOOR GUY: \nA Mancunian walks into a bar in New Orleans. He staggers past a guy downing his 5th neat whiskey. They form a band. Stage Door Guy is a post-punk blues duo mash up of Professor Longhair\, The Dead Kennedys and Dr John Cooper Clarke. With three acclaimed albums under their belt\, they were described by Louder Than War’s John Robb’s as: “… a quirky off-kilter slice of snarky swing with a rocking core” \nTheir latest album is the critically acclaimed ‘Stage Door Guy Beach Party’

SUMMARY:Gary Crowley presents An Evening With The Bluebells
DESCRIPTION:Gary Crowley presents An Evening With The Bluebells \nBBC London presenter Gary Crowley returns to The Exchange with another of his ever-popular evenings of conversation and music. This time featuring an acoustic trio from renowned Scottish band\, The Bluebells. \nFollowing an interview with Gary\, the trio will treat us to a set that draws upon catalogue of hits spanning over 40 years. \nThe Bluebells \nInitially The Bluebells enjoyed a whirlwind career spanning the early 1980s with a recording output including three UK hit singles. “I’m Falling”\, “Cath” and “Young at Heart”\, made with a procession of producers including Elvis Costello who became a mentor and teacher to the band. Guitarist and ex-fanzine publisher Robert Hodgens (aka Bobby Bluebell) wrote instantly memorable classics in collaboration with the two McCluskey Brothers who completed the Bluebells’ essential troika and Kenneth McCluskey sang them in a likably unaffected voice\, making every track count. \nWith the release of their debut album “Sisters” in 1984 on London Records\, The Bluebells toured widely in Europe and North America developing their live sound and signing to Seymour Stein’s Sire records in the U.S. \nRobert and the brothers parted company amicably in 1986 with Ken and David forming and releasing records as the McCluskey Brothers whilst Robert concentrated on song writing duties for various other artists including Texas and the late Sinead O’Connor\, as well as his own group The Poems. \nIn 1993 when “Young at Heart” hit the U.K. No 1 spot following its use as a TV advert for Volkswagon\, the chaps met up for some fun Top of the Pops appearances. \nThe Bluebells are very pleased to be playing again\, having recently received two premier Scottish Music Business Awards including “The Tartan Clef Award for Song Writing” at the star studded Nordoff–Robbins charity annual fundraiser at Glasgow Barrowlands. Following the re-release of the Classic album repackaged “Sisters” album on the Last Night From Glasgow\, The Bluebells were encouraged by the label and fans to record new material which has manifested itself in the excellent new album “The Bluebells In The 21st Century” released in April 2023. \nCherry Red have also compiled a 34 track bumper CD of the Bluebells “Sisters” containing all of the favourite recordings alongside some rare out-takes from the London records catalogue. \nBobby\, Ken and David are currently performing a variety of acoustic gigs as a three piece and as a full six piece line-up augmented by Campbell Owens (Aztec Camera) on Bass\, Douglas MacIntyre (Love and Money/Creeping Bent Organisation) on Guitar and Mick Slaven (Bourgie Bourgie\, Paul Quinn\, Del Amitri) on lead Guitar. \nGary Crowley is an English broadcaster\, TV presenter and DJ. While still at school in the late 1970s Gary Crowley founded the new wave fanzine “The Modern World” interviewing many of the most significant bands of the day including The Sex Pistols\, The Clash and The Jam. \nOn leaving school in 1978 Crowley took up a junior position at Decca Records before joining the staff of the NME\, taking over from Danny Baker as the telephone receptionist at their offices in Carnaby Street. At this time the weekly music paper was at the centre of the post punk explosion. \nCrowley’s knowledge and passion for music attracted the attention of broadcasters and in 1982 he was hired by London’s independent commercial station Capital Radio\, and aged 19 became the youngest radio DJ in the UK. Throughout the 1980s Gary Crowley became a prolific broadcaster / promoter\, hosting regular club night where he showcased many prominent chart acts at early points in their career\, including The Style Council\, The Bluebells\, Wham! and others. TV presenting followed and he was the main face on programmes such as Earsay\, ReVid\, Poparound and The Beat through the 80’s and 90’s. \nGary has worked within the music industry in many guises but his true love and passion is radio broadcasting. He continues to present the Saturday early evening show on Radio BBC London. \nThis year saw the follow up release “Gary Crowley Lost 80s 2” to the acclaimed Top 40 compilation ‘Gary Crowley’s Lost 80’s’ which again is another eclectic collection of under the radar gems from major 80s names as well as those who got away. \nA long time champion of new music\, he’s given many new bands/artists their first taste of radio exposure\, with the likes of Suede\, Dodgy and Bush in particular all going onto bigger and better things.

SUMMARY:Indie Unplugged @ The Star In Shoreditch
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, 11th October\, at The Star in Shoreditch for a stacked line-up of independent acoustic music. Expect indie vibes stripped back & Acoustics.\n\n£8 Tickets Adv \n£10 OTD \nThe Outers:\nThe Outers are a London-based indie rock band. Their songs have a distinctive\, up-tempo rhythm section supporting catchy guitar and vocal melodies. “We try to incorporate the vintage sound and subtle melodies of British pop\, and the depth of Post Punk with the edge of electro-pop to add a bit of a dance groove.\nThe Outers found their style after mixing influences such as the Arctic Monkeys\, Metric\, Grimes\, Temples\, Editors\, Chvrches\, The Strokes\, The Killers\, Suede\, Coldplay\, Blondie\, and The Cure. \n\nStill Traffico\nStill Traffico is an independent Mancunian band formed in 2023 by school friends Cam McColl and Dan Carabine and their friend Dan Arthur in London. They love post-punk\, Chanson Francaise\, Michael Head’s entire discography\, and African desert blues. \n  \nCharlie Smith\nMy name might be common\, but my style is alternative. I’m Charlie Smith\, a raw\, honest singer-songwriter from Hampshire\, UK. I host and perform at my shows at venues such as The Railway Inn\, The Attic & The Arthouse. In October 2023\, I embarked on my first solo tour of northern England. My latest EP ‘Here He Comes Now’ was released on the 24th of May. Clocking in at just 10 minutes it is an express 5 Track acoustic punk EP. The theme of the EP is the idea that certain things cannot be erased or forgotten. The lyrics evoke feelings of introspection\, reflection\, and renewal as the individual grapples with their inner turmoil and seeks to find solace. All tracks were recorded on the Tascam Model 12 at my mini-home studio. Featuring a single mic technique with minimal effects to simulate an authentic\, intimate sound. \n\nParadise Taxi\nParadise Taxi is a fresh indie-rock-pop band based in London – implementing punchy alt-rock riffs and funky hooks\, curators of your next favourite tunes\, including ‘Getaway Driver’ and ‘Don’t be a Lover’. \n\nAndy Wilson\nAndy\, once an electric guitarist for several rock bands in the UK and Switzerland\, took a step back from music for a few years. However\, the lockdown gave him a fresh perspective and renewed his excitement for music. He dived into recording and music production and developed an appreciation for the acoustic and Spanish guitars\, all while incorporating synthesizers into his sound. Andy is now focusing on solo performances as a singer-songwriter\, featuring his compositions and cover songs.

On Sunday\, composer Jimm from the Jazz Cannibals will be back with his eclectic style\, a mix of jazz\, rap\, trad\, folk\, reggae\, sea-shanty\, punk\, and funk. \n  \nSourdough Daali\, a micro-bakery and street food pop-up\, will let you indulge in some hearty sourdough focaccia sarnies – grilled cheese and lamb shawarma\, French-onion black daal and baked goods such as cardamom banana bread and brown butter flapjacks. Next to them\, Nuun Cakes will offer a specially curated menu of cake boxes\, serving their artisanal sponges\, signature toppings\, and unique flavour combos. Last but not least\, Handles Coffee will have barista coffees. \n  \nFor those curious about the art of ceramics\, our teachers and technicians will give wheel-throwing demonstrations\, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and showing you what you might learn in one of our courses. \n  \nThe pottery-history of Highgate Woods \nBetween 50AD-150AD\, a ‘Roman’ pottery manufacturing site was periodically active amongst the Oaks and Hornbeams (now Highgate Woods). During the 1960s and ’70s\, Harvey Sheldon and Tony Brown\, co-directors\, worked with many volunteer archaeologists to excavate this unique setting. Ten kilns were found during the excavations\, with countless pottery sherds and rare complete pots. One kiln\, lifted in 1968\, is currently being restored for exhibition in the Woods in September. The most famous pottery forms found are the humble and intimately shaped ‘Poppyhead beakers’\, with their Barbotine-style dots and slip decoration. Since the kilns’ discovery\, there has been tremendous energy from local heritage councils and charities to raise awareness of the rich history that flows through these hills. Most notable is the charity ‘Friends of Highgate Roman Kilns’ (FoHRK)\, which Turning Earth has teamed up with to expand on the pottery-making efforts and bring the local clay to local makers.   \n  \nTurning Earth celebrates local pottery heritage.  \nOver the last year\, we have built a relationship with FoHRK and gained permission to experiment with the local clay-rich deposits. With the Woods being steeped in pottery-making heritage from the 1st and 2nd centuries\, it’s only fitting that the first pottery site to open in these hills in nearly 2000 years should make efforts to return to the heritage of the Highgate area. \nOn the 12-15th of August 2024\, part of our team and volunteers from the FoHRK built a replica of an ancient Roman Kiln just on a corner of the Cricket Field in the Highgate Woods and next to the Cafe and the Education Hub.  \nOn the same weekend of the market\, on the 21st and 22nd of September\, the volunteers of FoHRK\, their partners Bruce Castle Museum and the City of London and we will light up this kiln with an experimental wood firing\, using wood from the surrounding area and the pots made by local potters with the clay we dug in the previous month. The firing will be open to the public on both days and it’s a unique experience to watch. The kiln will be packed early on Saturday\, and the firing will start just after\, burning for the whole day. After cooling down for an evening\, the kiln will be unpacked on Sunday afternoon\, around 4 pm (weather-dependent).  \nThis will also be an opportunity to educate the public on the rich history of Highgate Wood and to see the original 2000-year-old Roman kiln conserved and brought back to the woods for the first time since its discovery. \n  \nTurning Earth’s mission has always been to make ceramics and pottery accessible to the public. Working with clay has proven mental health benefits and a natural way to unite communities. As a pottery studio\, we continuously celebrate our human history by moulding the earth into art and useful vessels\, following the footsteps of many before us\, and continuing this heritage craft. We believe in our studios’ social power and ability to bring people together. We are proud to be growing roots in the surrounding woodlands and bringing our passion for ceramics to the local communities with these public firing events with our friends at FoHRK. We think this to be an important site not only for historians and archaeologists but also for makers and craft-oriented individuals who thirst to learn about the history of pottery.  \n  \nAbout Turning Earth Ceramics \nTurning Earth is London’s largest co-work ceramics studio complex\, now spanning three hobbyist studios (Hoxton\, Leyton\, and Highgate) and one professional studio in Leyton\, In Production. We greet hundreds of members and students each week\, and everyone is welcome\, from complete beginners to professional potters.  \n  \nHere and when: \n\n\n\nDate: 21st and 22nd September 2024\n\n\n\n\nTime: 11-5 pm each day\n\n\nLocation of the market: Turning Earth Highgate\, Woodside Works\, Summersby Road\, London\, N6 5UH\nLocation of Roman firing: next to Highgate cafe inside Highgate Woods\, follow the arrows from the studio entrance\n\n  \nContact Information:  \nEmail: info@turning.earth \nWebsite: https://www.turningearth.org/n6/events \nInstagram: @turning_earth \nFacebook event: https://www.facebook.com/share/H3f938cNJVS9SHKb/ \n

SUMMARY:My Lover Was a Salmon in the Climate Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:An Irish folk gig goes off the rails when one band member turns into a fish. Come for the trad tunes\, stay for the salmon trivia and existential despair: this gig gets weird. \n\n\n\nEverything Theatre ★★★★ “A masterclass of gig theatre” \n\n\n\nFringebiscuit ★★★★ “Informative\, energetic\, divinely absurd […] the music is sublime throughout” \n\n\n\nHumanity’s ruined the ecosystem\, but humanity’s just a dodgy side branch of fish evolution. The solution’s clear – and that’s where the salmon come in. \n\n\n\nFin’s climate anxiety culminates in his thinking he’s a salmon onstage while his girlfriend and bandmate look on in fishy horror. This could be a climate revolution. \n\n\n\nBut being a salmon would put particular stress on everyone’s personal lives. And actually\, that’s a good question to ask: can our relationships survive this overwhelming timeline we’re in at all? (Features salmon.) \n\n\n\nWith live trad music\, FX pedal soundscapes\, global industrial food production\, colonialism\, fish farming\, and probably inevitable ecological destruction? \n\n\n\nWinner of Staging Change x VAULT Award 2022Winner of Axis Green Arts Award (for previous work)
