SUMMARY:Magpie's Nest
DESCRIPTION:This September\, discover a hidden palace on the banks of the Thames… \nWander from stage to stage with music all around you\, and take in the views across the river as you listen to songs by the fireside. See what treasures you might find in the grounds of this incredible 16th century building. \n\n\nAt the Nest Collective\, we’ve always felt that the shows with as few microphones as possible – with musicians playing unamplified\, the old way – have been the most intimate and special. So we decided to create an entire event around this! No sound checks\, no waiting for bands to plug in\, just pure continuous music across multiple stages. \nMagpie’s Nest is the new name of our Unamplifire Festival\, taking its new title from our original music night founded in 2005 that grew into the Nest Collective. \nThis September’s event has been created with safety for Covid-19 in mind\, and as such has a significantly reduced audience size. It reflects all the spirit and joy of our summer festivals\, but has been specially devised to work in these times of distancing and restrictions. It will be smaller\, but just as beautiful. \n\n\nPerhaps Contraption – Multi-award winning\, progressive brass band from London. Part choir\, part chamber orchestra\, part avant rock troupe\, they create a truly unique musical experience. \nJimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith – Amazing duo playing traditional folk music of the British Isles\, highlighting issues of ecology\, resistance and political struggle. \nAlice Zawadzki – Award-winning vocalist\, violinist\, songwriter and composer. \nTom Moore & Archie Moss – Widely regarded as two of the best players and innovators in traditional folk. \nLady Nade – Within a minute of hearing her voice\, this modern soul\, blues and folk balladeer will make you feel as if she’s an old friend. \nSimo Lagnawi & Gnawa London – The Moroccan musician Simo Lagnawi was raised in the Gnawa tradition and is an award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music. \nMore artists to be announced!

SUMMARY:Live Theatre in London - The Sunday Art Club: Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Live Theatre in London – The Sunday Art Club: Sessions – Funk\, Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned Jazz Musicians.\n \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions launches at Arboretum in London’s West End\, offering an evening of intimate performance that provides a platform for multidisciplinary artists. The September Sessions offers Caribbean cuisine\, live theatre\, Funk & Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned jazz musicians Tony Kofi and The Organisation. \nHeadliners Tony Kofi and The Organisation are a Hammond/guitar/drums/baritone saxophone quartet playing a combination of high energy modern jazz\, Latin blues and funk\, including many rarely played classics by George Russell\, Woody Shaw\, Duke Pearson\, Pepper Adams\, George Benson and others. Regulars on the jazz circuit have performed throughout London and the UK\, including at the Southbank Centre as part of the Pull Out the Stops festival of organ music. \nCelebrating The Sunday Art Club’s Season of Love\, director James Scotland-Barnes (Assistant Director\, She Ventures and He Wins\, Young Vic) presents a pivotal scene from Cyrano de Bergerac that explores not only the wonders of poetry but the importance of men learning how to love and lose themselves in the art of romance. Cyrano’s insecurity is one of citizenship and his Jamaican tongue in a world of wealth\, wit\, and words. Jamaican performer Akil Young will play the titular role with Afia Abusham (Nevergreen\, Arcola Theatre) as Roxane. Christian will be performed by Tom Swale\, who is currently busy creating a theatre school in his homeland of Papua New Guinea. \nThe evening will also feature Funk & Hip Hop beats by DJ Darsi alongside a display of atmospheric landscapes by visual artist Miriam Jane Camancho. Known primarily as a digital artist\, during the last year\, Camancho has worked to develop her creativity in physical art; running away from the endless possibilities that pixels provide\, she has let the imperfections of the brush and the texture of the paint texture expand her spontaneity and freedom. Plus\, there will be poetry readings from Yasmin Beck\, Charlotte Gosling and Marina Stoimenova. \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions are organised by Khaos\, a London-based\, internationally-minded theatre company\, with a mission to create theatre that is accessible to all. Khaos use the arts to galvanise communities to take social action. They see theatre as a movement\, a truth and a study of our existence. \nJames Scotland-Barnes comments\, “I’m very excited to get The Sunday Art Club open again and present a series of eclectic performances unique to our platform. Our September to December season starts strong with jazz great Tony Kofi. It builds on the marvellous work of newcomer Akil Young(Actor)\, who led the Guerrilla Shakespeare production of ‘Coriolanus’! Emerging from a tough 18 months\, I really hope that our ‘Season of Love’ re-engages our audiences old and new\, and with a host of new poets and actors\, we’ll be celebrating love in all its wonderful and complicated forms.” \nFollowing a successful debut in July 2020\, this unique series of not-for-profit events is a vehicle for the arts industry to reconnect at a grassroots level. It looks to build a network of multi-disciplinary artists and audiences from diverse backgrounds. \nKhaos\, formerly known as Outer Gaea Company\, is a 2021/22 New Vic Kiln Associate Company. \nLive Theatre in London

SUMMARY:Campfire Club: The Magpies
DESCRIPTION:The Nest Collective invites you to enjoy a beautiful fireside concert with The Magpies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRediscover one of life’s simplest joys – the sharing of live music in the glow of a campfire. \nEvery summer\, we gather in beautiful green spaces within cities to hear extraordinary music by artists from all over the world. \nIn the simple way that people have done for thousands of years\, we come together around the fire to enjoy music\, food\, drink and the company of others. \nFor this Campfire Club we are delighted to present The Magpies. \nIt has only been a short space of time since The Magpies burst onto the UK folk scene\, but they have already made a huge impression with their fresh brand of transatlantic neo-folk and have been ‘making waves wherever they play’ (Phil Beer\, Show of Hands). \nBased on a deeply felt musical friendship\, The Magpies work collaboratively\, arranging material led by powerful vocals and glittering instrumental ornamentation. They each draw on their wide-ranging influences to create a unique blend of transatlantic folk\, transporting audiences to distant lands and capturing imaginations with their enthralling live show.

SUMMARY:My Lover Was a Salmon in the Climate Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:An Irish folk gig goes off the rails when one band member turns into a fish. Come for the trad tunes\, stay for the salmon trivia and existential despair: this gig gets weird. \n\n\n\nEverything Theatre ★★★★ “A masterclass of gig theatre” \n\n\n\nFringebiscuit ★★★★ “Informative\, energetic\, divinely absurd […] the music is sublime throughout” \n\n\n\nHumanity’s ruined the ecosystem\, but humanity’s just a dodgy side branch of fish evolution. The solution’s clear – and that’s where the salmon come in. \n\n\n\nFin’s climate anxiety culminates in his thinking he’s a salmon onstage while his girlfriend and bandmate look on in fishy horror. This could be a climate revolution. \n\n\n\nBut being a salmon would put particular stress on everyone’s personal lives. And actually\, that’s a good question to ask: can our relationships survive this overwhelming timeline we’re in at all? (Features salmon.) \n\n\n\nWith live trad music\, FX pedal soundscapes\, global industrial food production\, colonialism\, fish farming\, and probably inevitable ecological destruction? \n\n\n\nWinner of Staging Change x VAULT Award 2022Winner of Axis Green Arts Award (for previous work)

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Highgate Autumn Market
DESCRIPTION:Treasure-hunt handmade ceramics and watch a Roman Kiln Replica firing \n  \nAfter a short summer break\, Turning Earth’s Ceramics Market returns to the Highgate studio on the weekend of September 21st and 22nd. With 120 different makers offering their handmade pieces over the weekend\, you can expect to find some crafted and unique treasures. Make sure to visit on both days\, as there will be 60 different makers on each!  \n  \nAll the ingredients for the best weekend out are there: handmade goods\, live music\, street food\, pottery demonstrations\, and\, the cherry on top\, a Roman kiln firing!  \n  \nOn Saturday\, the market will be enlivened with the music of critically acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Theo Bard. On Sunday\, composer Jimm from the Jazz Cannibals will be back with his eclectic style\, a mix of jazz\, rap\, trad\, folk\, reggae\, sea-shanty\, punk\, and funk. \n  \nSourdough Daali\, a micro-bakery and street food pop-up\, will let you indulge in some hearty sourdough focaccia sarnies – grilled cheese and lamb shawarma\, French-onion black daal and baked goods such as cardamom banana bread and brown butter flapjacks. Next to them\, Nuun Cakes will offer a specially curated menu of cake boxes\, serving their artisanal sponges\, signature toppings\, and unique flavour combos. Last but not least\, Handles Coffee will have barista coffees. \n  \nFor those curious about the art of ceramics\, our teachers and technicians will give wheel-throwing demonstrations\, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and showing you what you might learn in one of our courses. \n  \nThe pottery-history of Highgate Woods \nBetween 50AD-150AD\, a ‘Roman’ pottery manufacturing site was periodically active amongst the Oaks and Hornbeams (now Highgate Woods). During the 1960s and ’70s\, Harvey Sheldon and Tony Brown\, co-directors\, worked with many volunteer archaeologists to excavate this unique setting. Ten kilns were found during the excavations\, with countless pottery sherds and rare complete pots. One kiln\, lifted in 1968\, is currently being restored for exhibition in the Woods in September. The most famous pottery forms found are the humble and intimately shaped ‘Poppyhead beakers’\, with their Barbotine-style dots and slip decoration. Since the kilns’ discovery\, there has been tremendous energy from local heritage councils and charities to raise awareness of the rich history that flows through these hills. Most notable is the charity ‘Friends of Highgate Roman Kilns’ (FoHRK)\, which Turning Earth has teamed up with to expand on the pottery-making efforts and bring the local clay to local makers.   \n  \nTurning Earth celebrates local pottery heritage.  \nOver the last year\, we have built a relationship with FoHRK and gained permission to experiment with the local clay-rich deposits. With the Woods being steeped in pottery-making heritage from the 1st and 2nd centuries\, it’s only fitting that the first pottery site to open in these hills in nearly 2000 years should make efforts to return to the heritage of the Highgate area. \nOn the 12-15th of August 2024\, part of our team and volunteers from the FoHRK built a replica of an ancient Roman Kiln just on a corner of the Cricket Field in the Highgate Woods and next to the Cafe and the Education Hub.  \nOn the same weekend of the market\, on the 21st and 22nd of September\, the volunteers of FoHRK\, their partners Bruce Castle Museum and the City of London and we will light up this kiln with an experimental wood firing\, using wood from the surrounding area and the pots made by local potters with the clay we dug in the previous month. The firing will be open to the public on both days and it’s a unique experience to watch. The kiln will be packed early on Saturday\, and the firing will start just after\, burning for the whole day. After cooling down for an evening\, the kiln will be unpacked on Sunday afternoon\, around 4 pm (weather-dependent).  \nThis will also be an opportunity to educate the public on the rich history of Highgate Wood and to see the original 2000-year-old Roman kiln conserved and brought back to the woods for the first time since its discovery. \n  \nTurning Earth’s mission has always been to make ceramics and pottery accessible to the public. Working with clay has proven mental health benefits and a natural way to unite communities. As a pottery studio\, we continuously celebrate our human history by moulding the earth into art and useful vessels\, following the footsteps of many before us\, and continuing this heritage craft. We believe in our studios’ social power and ability to bring people together. We are proud to be growing roots in the surrounding woodlands and bringing our passion for ceramics to the local communities with these public firing events with our friends at FoHRK. We think this to be an important site not only for historians and archaeologists but also for makers and craft-oriented individuals who thirst to learn about the history of pottery.  \n  \nAbout Turning Earth Ceramics \nTurning Earth is London’s largest co-work ceramics studio complex\, now spanning three hobbyist studios (Hoxton\, Leyton\, and Highgate) and one professional studio in Leyton\, In Production. We greet hundreds of members and students each week\, and everyone is welcome\, from complete beginners to professional potters.  \n  \nHere and when: \n\n\n\nDate: 21st and 22nd September 2024\n\n\n\n\nTime: 11-5 pm each day\n\n\nLocation of the market: Turning Earth Highgate\, Woodside Works\, Summersby Road\, London\, N6 5UH\nLocation of Roman firing: next to Highgate cafe inside Highgate Woods\, follow the arrows from the studio entrance\n\n  \nContact Information:  \nEmail: info@turning.earth \nWebsite: https://www.turningearth.org/n6/events \nInstagram: @turning_earth \nFacebook event: https://www.facebook.com/share/H3f938cNJVS9SHKb/ \n

SUMMARY:Indie Unplugged @ The Star In Shoreditch
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, 11th October\, at The Star in Shoreditch for a stacked line-up of independent acoustic music. Expect indie vibes stripped back & Acoustics.\n\n£8 Tickets Adv \n£10 OTD \nThe Outers:\nThe Outers are a London-based indie rock band. Their songs have a distinctive\, up-tempo rhythm section supporting catchy guitar and vocal melodies. “We try to incorporate the vintage sound and subtle melodies of British pop\, and the depth of Post Punk with the edge of electro-pop to add a bit of a dance groove.\nThe Outers found their style after mixing influences such as the Arctic Monkeys\, Metric\, Grimes\, Temples\, Editors\, Chvrches\, The Strokes\, The Killers\, Suede\, Coldplay\, Blondie\, and The Cure. \n\nStill Traffico\nStill Traffico is an independent Mancunian band formed in 2023 by school friends Cam McColl and Dan Carabine and their friend Dan Arthur in London. They love post-punk\, Chanson Francaise\, Michael Head’s entire discography\, and African desert blues. \n  \nCharlie Smith\nMy name might be common\, but my style is alternative. I’m Charlie Smith\, a raw\, honest singer-songwriter from Hampshire\, UK. I host and perform at my shows at venues such as The Railway Inn\, The Attic & The Arthouse. In October 2023\, I embarked on my first solo tour of northern England. My latest EP ‘Here He Comes Now’ was released on the 24th of May. Clocking in at just 10 minutes it is an express 5 Track acoustic punk EP. The theme of the EP is the idea that certain things cannot be erased or forgotten. The lyrics evoke feelings of introspection\, reflection\, and renewal as the individual grapples with their inner turmoil and seeks to find solace. All tracks were recorded on the Tascam Model 12 at my mini-home studio. Featuring a single mic technique with minimal effects to simulate an authentic\, intimate sound. \n\nParadise Taxi\nParadise Taxi is a fresh indie-rock-pop band based in London – implementing punchy alt-rock riffs and funky hooks\, curators of your next favourite tunes\, including ‘Getaway Driver’ and ‘Don’t be a Lover’. \n\nAndy Wilson\nAndy\, once an electric guitarist for several rock bands in the UK and Switzerland\, took a step back from music for a few years. However\, the lockdown gave him a fresh perspective and renewed his excitement for music. He dived into recording and music production and developed an appreciation for the acoustic and Spanish guitars\, all while incorporating synthesizers into his sound. Andy is now focusing on solo performances as a singer-songwriter\, featuring his compositions and cover songs.
