SUMMARY:Adventures in Arts Based Research: Reimagining Horizons by Professor Kitrina Douglas
DESCRIPTION:In this inaugural lecture\, I journey through a landscape that has shaped and challenged my research over the past twenty years. This is a terrain marked by many peaks and plenty of deep ravines and cliff edges. How do we tell the stories of those who have no power? How do we understand and communicate difficult or impossible experiences to narrate in words? What are the consequences for our society and culture when research omits somatic or pre-linguistic ways of knowing? How may we stand with participants by including our own experiences and vulnerabilities? How can we conduct research with – not on – others? \nAbout the Speaker: \nBefore entering academia\, Kitrina played international amateur golf\, representing England and Great Britain\, before joining the professional ranks\, where she played on the European tour. Among her dozen or so titles are twice winning the European Masters Championships\, the English Open Championships\, and she was a member of the first winning European Solheim Cup team. She spent a decade working in television and radio\, first with the BBC Radio Five Live outside broadcasting team\, and then with Eurosport presenting programs in Paris.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Battle of Chillianwala - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:Ian McLeod tells the story of one of the fiercest battles of the Second Sikh War\, assessing its significance and revealing a unique link with the Royal Hospital Chelsea. \nAbout the event\nIn January 1849\, in the Punjab (in modern-day Pakistan)\, forces of the British East India Company clashed with the army of the Sikh Empire in a fierce and bloody battle. The British public were shocked by the severe casualties inflicted on British soldiers\, particularly those of the 24th Regiment of Foot\, which lost half of its strength in dead and wounded. Both sides claimed victory\, but British prestige was damaged. \nAt the time\, the battle fired Victorian imaginations. One distinguished poet immortalised it in verse and\, when two British generals were remarking on the disaster of the ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ in Crimea in 1854\, one remarked: ‘These sorts of things will happen in war. It is nothing to Chillianwala.’

SUMMARY:Talk: The Invention of British Art - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:You have to try really hard\, it seems\, to like British art. Even its admirers concede it has contributed little to world art history. Tate\, the closest thing we have to a gallery of British art\, assigns less than a quarter of its display space to works made before 1900. Outside Britain\, only one gallery in the whole world is dedicated to British art\, in Yale. Few people visit it. \nWhy is British art so overlooked? Is it because Britain itself has never been enthusiastic about art\, and indeed remains ill at ease with it today? Is it\, quite simply\, bad? Or has British art suffered an injustice\, its impact on the world unfairly disregarded? \nNone of these questions can be answered without a frank reassessment of the history of British art\, those who made it\, and those it was made for. Now\, leading art historian Bendor Grosvenor is taking on that challenge. Looking at key moments\, objects and individuals from every era\, he explores how they were shaped by their environment\, and why – above all – it took so long for the art from theses isles to actually become ‘British’. \nFrom folk art to the role of female artists\, from the influences of invaders to the territories of the British Empire\, the story of British art is just as much a story of Britain’s place in the world\, and its impact upon it\, as the art and artists themselves. \nBendor Grosvenor is an art historian specialising in Old Masters and British art. Best known from the BBC series ‘Britain’s Lost Masterpieces’ and ‘Fake or Fortune?’\, he has discovered a number of important paintings by prominent artists including Van Dyck\, Rubens\, Titian\, Gainsborough\, Beale and Lawrence.

SUMMARY:Reframing dementia\, distress and inpatient care
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the University of West London on May 14\, 2026\, at 6:00 PM for an inspiring talk from Professor Emma Wolverson. Professor of Ageing and Dementia at the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory. \nAs a clinical academic\, my programme of research challenges negative perceptions of dementia by focusing on people’s strengths and by supporting the clinical teams who care for them. My goal is to empower teams to develop and deliver evidence-based care to improve experiences and outcomes for people living with dementia and their families\, enabling health and social care professionals to respond to an individual’s needs with skill and empathy. My research programme draws on positive psychology to deliver this evidence. Building on these foundations\, my current National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded research programme focuses on the dementia crisis – particularly when a crisis leads to an emergency admission within an inpatient mental health ward\, a setting which cares for the most unwell\, vulnerable\, and high-risk people living with dementia. Being admitted can be frightening and overwhelming for both the person and their family. Stays are often long\, and many people do not return home afterwards.

SUMMARY:Guest House: Unwriting the Artist’s Statement Online Workshop with Elle Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a focused\, playful session of conversation\, making\, and discovering your own voice. This workshop creates space to build confidence\, loosen habits around language\, and allow your voice to develop naturally\, staying close to your practice rather than separate from it. \nUnwriting the Artist’s Statement invites you to abscond from International Art English and respond directly to your work. Moving away from the critical language often used to address contemporary art\, this workshop proposes different protocols for speaking about your practice to the world.  \nThrough a series of guided prompts\, improvisation\, and gentle exercises\, participants will work with revision\, association\, and a deliberate quality of randomness to develop ways of using their own voice. The focus is on speaking through the work rather than separating language from practice. \nThis is a supportive space for play\, experimentation\, and discovery. No previous experience or prepared text is needed.  \nThe workshop is hosted by IMT Gallery and led by artist Elle Reynolds\, whose practice works through collaborative processes\, storytelling\, and material experimentation. Her work explores making as a way of thinking together\, with a particular interest in shared authorship\, provisional forms\, and the social life of materials. \nOver the two hours\, you will: \n\nDevelop new ways of talking about your work that feel personal and less rehearsed\nLoosen habits around formal or institutional language\nBuild confidence in speaking and writing about your practice\nGenerate material you can continue to develop after the session\nConnect with others navigating similar questions around language and practice.\n\nAbout Elle Reynolds: \nArtist/scholarresearcherquiet disrupter\, Elle Reynolds has a background in organising practice. She continually challenges traditional institutional structures\, reimagining the use of time and space. Her art making under the pseudonym Guest-Host-Guest includes object installation\, collaborative events\, performative storytelling and interventions that unsettle the notion of archive through spatial exploration\, participation\, and the disruption of academic language. She holds a PhD investigating alternative art school spaces and serves as a Non-Executive Director and Board member of TOMA (The Other MA)\, an alternative art school in Southend-on-Sea\, Essex. Recent projects include workshops for New Contemporaries and Creative Break Time. She is currently Programme Leader of the Graduate Diploma in Art at Goldsmiths. \nThis workshop is open to all: makers\, artists\, writers\, anti-writers\, poets\, curators at any stage of their practice\, and anyone interested in finding alternative ways to speak about their work. It is especially useful if you are preparing portfolios\, applications\, or exhibitions\, or if you simply want your language to feel more natural and connected to what you do.  \nPlaces are limited to keep the session conversational and supportive—book early to secure your place. \nEarly Bird Rates are available until 29 March at 11:59pm GMT \n_\nImage: ‘Morass’ Mapping by Elle Reynolds

SUMMARY:A Professorial Lecture by Professor Ioannis S. Pantelidis
DESCRIPTION:“Hospitality as a regenerative force for human connection\, wellbeing and leadership” \nIn this lecture\, Professor Ioannis S. Pantelidis examines the changing landscape of hospitality and tourism and shows how the sector can create regenerative ecosystems through innovation\, behaviour and human-centred leadership. Intelligent systems\, data-driven personalisation and rising experiential expectations are transforming service environments\, yet the true source of excellence remains the human touch. Hospitality cultivates empathy\, cultural awareness\, agility and the practical art of caring for others. These qualities strengthen leadership across health\, business\, transport\, the creative industries and every area where human interaction shapes success. At a time when isolation and mental health concerns are increasing\, the values of hospitality become even more significant. Warm service\, genuine welcome and meaningful moments support emotional well-being and deepen social connection. Drawing on research\, education and lived experience\, Professor Pantelidis offers an optimistic and thought-provoking vision of a sector that continues to evolve while remaining rooted in human values that can guide society toward stronger communities and more compassionate leadership.
