SUMMARY:What Makes Great Drama Great? - Screenwriting Masterclass with Eleanor Greene (In person)
DESCRIPTION:Why do great stories make us gasp\, or catch our breath in wonder? Why does a moment of raw\, flawed humanity stop us in our tracks? And why\, even in the darkest tales\, does a flash of levity increase our enjoyment of the story? \nIn this masterclass\, led by award-winning executive producer and script editor Eleanor Greene\, we will explore the key elements of successful drama\, starting not with structure or formula\, but with something more fundamental: how we experience our favourite stories\, and why some of them stay with us forever. \nEleanor has spent her career inside the room where stories get made: developing scripts\, working with writers\, and producing drama at the highest level. In this masterclass\, she shares the framework she has developed through that experience: the essential elements that every great story needs to move an audience. \nIn the morning session we will explore these elements through the lens of existing successful shows and films\, examining why they work\, why they affect us the way they do\, and what writers do to create those effects deliberately. \nIn the afternoon we move from theory to practice\, with a series of hands-on exercises designed to improve specific aspects of your writing: how to write sharper dialogue\, how to eradicate exposition\, how to use subtext to build tension in a scene\, and how to construct a series quickly and confidently using the tools we explored from the morning’s session. \nYou will leave with a framework you can apply immediately\, and a clearer sense of the writer you want to be. \nEleanor Greene is an award-winning creative with over 25 years experience in developing\, pitching and producing scripted TV and film. A BAFTA nominated Drama Executive Producer\, Script Editor and TV fanatic she has made shows across many genres and lengths\, including sitcom\, thriller\, police procedural\, political\, historical and factual drama\, multi episodic series and features. \nThis workshop takes place in person in the New Room at the Library. Doors will open at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. \nTea and coffee will be provided throughout and we will have pens and paper available but feel free to bring your own writing material. We will break for an hour for lunch and you are welcome to bring your lunch with you – there is a fridge – or there are plenty of places to buy food nearby. \nLondon Library events are subject to Terms & Conditions

SUMMARY:Re-Enchant: November | Cockpit Theatre
DESCRIPTION:RE:ENCHANT – Poetic Experiments For A New World. Live literature every third Sunday. 15 November 2026. Featuring Gale Burns\, Luigi Coppola and Nadia Larina\, plus open mic slots. Curated and introduced by Nick Moss in collaboration with The Cockpit. Readings\, recitations\, incantations and performances from established and upstart poets and word artists. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Cockpit & Emergence Production\n\n\nRE-ENCHANT – Poetic Experiments For A New World \nA poetry and spoken word session: we welcome established writers as well as new work and new performers to challenge us and shake us all out of our complacency. \nRe-Enchant is run by poets – but it’s not for poets. We don’t want to talk to ourselves. Poetry\, if it’s to survive and develop as an art form\, has to be about communication. If we are only talking to ourselves\, then we’ve failed. Poetry began as an oral form – the Vedas\, the Epic of Gilgamesh\, the Odyssey. We don’t claim the same brilliance\, but we do want to document our history and challenge the narratives of our times. \nWe have entered an era when the progressive values we fought for are being bulldozed into reverse. In days like these\, creative work can seem futile and irrelevant. Re-Enchant is a commitment to the idea that words can change things. Poetry is a place where we have the chance to play with concepts\, explore new forms of thinking and discuss other ways of living. Poetry is a commitment to experimentation. We want to hear from new voices – we want to hear from the voices that are always shut out from the arts. We want to dethrone the laureates. Come and join us. As The Jam once sang\, “If we communicate for two minutes only/It will be a start.” \nThe world changes: we make new poetry to vandalise literary forms or retrieve those we need to renew.  We make new poetry to hybridise new species of understanding and reframe consciousness. \nWe make new poetry to have a good time.

SUMMARY:Panel Talk: Staging the (Un)translatable: Global Voices and Panlingual Dramaturgies
DESCRIPTION:Join professional theatre-makers\, dramaturgs\, translators\, publishers and researchers for a panel talk to examine the interrelation between (un)translatability\, (un)stageability and (un)performability. \nWe will reflect on these topics in the context of Voila! Theatre festival championing work by artists working across multiple languages\, at a time when the UK theatre landscape is increasingly taking note of transnational artists and audiences. \nWe will address panlingualism in the theatre\, alongside the experience of making work in languages other than English and/or the creatives’ own mother tongue. \nWe will reflect on what it means to be an exophonic artist\, and how migration challenges the notion of the ‘native speaker’. The event will include a short reading from a contemporary play\, with a view to serve as a prompt for an applied conversation on the topic. SUMMARY:Age UK London launches ‘Rock Against Ageism’ with Toyah Willcox Event
DESCRIPTION:The Age UK London team know that age is only a number\, especially when it comes to creativity and music.  So they are delighted to announce the first Rock Against Ageism special event\, taking place on 18 November\, featuring none other than music icon Toyah Willcox. \n\nThis special occasion will offer an illuminating conversation with a pop rock legend who is close to so many of our hearts in the UK. It’s no Mystery that the Age UK London team love her! Your support will help fund the vital work of Age UK London\, an independent charity within the wider Age UK network dedicated to improving the lives of older people across the capital.\n\nThe afternoon will open with an intimate fireside chat with Toyah\, one of the UK’s most distinctive and enduring musical talents. The conversation will explore her remarkable career\, experiences of ageing in the public eye\, and the importance of challenging ageism across the music industry and wider society.\n\nThe event is intended to be the first in a series of Rock Against Ageism events\, with a number of other well-known singers already on board for future occasions…very exciting indeed!\n\nThe launch of the Rock Against Ageism events comes at an important time for the campaign against ageism. Recent research undertaken by Age UK London into the experiences of older Londoners found that almost half have experienced ageism\, while 60% are reluctant to challenge it. Older Londoners reported experiencing ageism in everyday situations\, including on public transport\, in shops and when accessing healthcare services such as GP surgeries and hospitals.\n\nRock Against Ageism aims not only to raise funds\, but also to use music’s power and influence to challenge negative stereotypes about ageing and promote a more positive\, inclusive view of later life.\n\nLiz Drury\, CEO of Age UK London\, said:\n\n“We are over the moon that Toyah has agreed to support us by speaking at this special event. She is the epitome of creativity and joy\, and a shining example of a positive attitude at any age.”\n\n“For 42 years\, Toyah has taken to the stage like no other. She has received numerous awards and nominations for her work in singing\, writing and acting\, and her tours continue to sell out across the country.”\n\n“Thank you for joining us\, Toyah!”\n\nThe November event will offer supporters the chance to enjoy a unique afternoon with a true music icon while helping Age UK London continue its work to improve the lives of older people across the capital.\n\nTickets are priced at £30 and can be booked here.

SUMMARY:Only Beautiful Things to Look At + Q&A with director Ivan Ostrochovský and actress Aňa Geislerová
DESCRIPTION:Ingrid (Aňa Geislerová)\, a successful gynaecologist at a district hospital in late-1980s Czechoslovakia\, lives a comfortable life with her music-teacher husband Maroš in a beautiful house in the countryside. At work\, she delivers babies\, performs abortions and takes part in sterilisation procedures\, often without her Roma patients’ informed consent\, believing she is acting in their best interests. But when Agáta\, a young Romany woman\, joins the hospital staff\, Ingrid’s carefully ordered world begins to shift. As the two form an unexpected bond\, Ingrid is forced to confront the unsettling truth that even the noblest intentions cannot justify the means. \nWinner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival\, Ostrochovský’s beguiling\, intimate drama confronts a suppressed chapter of Czechoslovak history\, when the state sought to control women’s reproductive choices and Roma women were subjected to forced sterilisation under the guise of modernisation\, care and medical progress. \nIvan Ostrochovský\, Slovak Republic\, Czech Republic\, Hungary 2026\, 88´\, English subtitles\nCast: Aňa Geislerová\, Simona Boledovičová\, Eva Mores\, Vlad Ivanov\, Éva Bandor\, Attila Mokos

SUMMARY:A View from the Banjo
DESCRIPTION:A View from the Banjo is an offering from vocal trio The Ruffians\, in collaboration with Amber Priestley and CN Lester. Three pieces for voices and noise makers (Priestley) – one of which is a new commission and world premiere – sit alongside settings of Gertrude Stein (Lester). This is an exercise in absurdity\, a provocation of mundanity and a celebration of smallnesses. Through video installation\, factory-like production lines and household objects\, The Ruffians invite accidental\, incidental and coincidental sounds onto the stage. \n\n\n\nThe first half of the concert will be Contemporary Vocal Sünds\, a bold recital of new vocal music co-curated by Eleanor Westbrook and Oskar McCarthy. It explores what voices can do when freed from tradition\, combining experimental vocal techniques\, theatricality\, and improvisation into a bold and captivating live experience that reimagines the dynamics between singers and audience.

SUMMARY:EFG London Jazz Festival: Empirical feat. Ivo Neame & David Preston | The Cockpit Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Join the multi award-winning UK jazz ensemble Empirical for a performance of their second release on Whirlwind Recordings\, their forebodingly titled eighth album Like Lambs: To The Slaughter. \nEmpirical\, Nathaniel Facey (alto sax)\, Tom Farmer (double bass) and Shaney Forbes (drums)\, have enlisted long-time collaborators Ivo Neame (piano) and David Preston (guitar) to lend their distinctive musical voices to the album. \nA radical reworking of drummer Shaney Forbes’ unconventional long-form suite\, first issued as a self-released EP\, the album unfolds as an uninterrupted 51-minute musical story. Originally conceived during the pandemic\, Like Lambs: To The Slaughter explores ever-more relevant questions around the human capacity for independent thought versus herd-like behaviour\, and the line between innocence and ignorance. \nTraversing the musical terrain between contemporary classical music\, soundscape\, post-bop and free jazz\, the music often reflects our frantic\, split-attention world where individualism reigns supreme\, but also represents a refusal to relinquish faith in the possibility of spiritual and intellectual enlightenment. Having started their journey in 2007\, Empirical continue to be at the centre of the UK jazz scene owing to their trademark combination of complex\, thoughtful writing and spontaneous improvisation reflecting years of collective music-making.

SUMMARY:Family Shakespeare: Pyramus & Thisbe - November | The Cockpit Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Rude Mechanicals have been asked to perform a play at the Duke’s wedding. Trouble is\, they’ve forgotten to write it! Can you help? \nDo you remember Pyramus & Thisbe? Made before the cultural restrictions of the normalisation period took over the country’s film industry\, this late work of the Czech New Wave still retains its cult status. \nDigitisation carried out in 2026 in UPP and Soundsquare studios by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in collaboration with the Národní filmový archiv\, Prague and the Czech Audiovisual Fund\, with funding from Milada Kučerová and Eduard Kučerá. \nDir. Jaromil Jireš\, Czechoslovakia 1970\, 77´\, English subtitles. (15)\nCast: Jaroslava Schallerová\, Helena Anyžová\, Petr Kopřiva and Jiří Prýmek. \nContains scenes of abuse and suicide.

SUMMARY:THE HUMAN VOICE by Jean Cocteau| The Cockpit Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Elliot Pritchard stars as The Woman in the immortal classic of love lost over the telephone. \nThe telephone rings. During the call The Woman gradually loses her battle to retain her lover. On one end of the phone\, there is the person who cannot be false to their nature. They are being abandoned by the unseen lover on the other end of the phone who cannot face up to their nature at all. \nIn a new physical theatre adaptation\, The Human Voice leads us down the steep descent into emotional defeat and loneliness\, the destiny of many who feel outside of society\, a universal feeling that we all\, intermittently\, share. \nFeaturing outstanding new theatre artist Elliot Pritchard as The Woman in his first solo show\, the production by Andrew Visnevski returns this world-famous piece to the queer world which inspired it originally almost 100 years ago. A scintillating legend of French cultural life and a personal friend of Marcel Proust\, Pablo Picasso\, Max Jacob\, Igor Stravinsky\, Man Ray and Lee Miller among others\, Jean Cocteau was openly self-declared homosexual and his work as revolutionary film-maker\, critic\, writer\, highly individual illustrator and painter attested to it. Cocteau’s use of metaphors\, mirrors and masks expresses the covert longings and the semi-fantasy of existence when an individual is ‘out-of-norm’ in society. \nShow times:\nTues-Sat: 7:30pm – 8:40pm\nSat: 3:30pm – 4:40pm
