SUMMARY:In Her Defence - London Musical Theatre
DESCRIPTION:In Her Defence\, an original British musical comedy written by Harrison Cranfield\, will make its debut at Camden Fringe this August. Set against the vibrant backdrop of 1987\, the production follows Donna\, a fiery single mother whose life is turned upside down when she discovers her husband’s affair\, only to find herself caught in the middle of a chaotic custody battle. \nAs gossip spreads through her close-knit neighbourhood faster than the morning post\, Donna must navigate solicitors\, awkward encounters\, unexpected allies and the challenge of rebuilding her life while protecting the people she loves most. Alongside a sharp-tongued best friend and a very questionable postman\, Donna discovers that finding her voice may be the most important battle of all. \nBlending laugh-out-loud comedy with genuine emotional warmth\, In Her Defence captures the spirit of 1980s Britain through colourful characters\, sharp dialogue and an original score full of wit and heart. The musical explores themes of resilience\, friendship\, family and standing up for yourself when the world expects you to stay silent. \nSpeaking about the production\, writer Harrison Cranfield said: \n“I wanted to create a musical that feels unmistakably British: funny\, heartfelt and rooted in characters audiences can recognise and connect with. At its core\, In Her Defence is about finding strength in difficult circumstances and discovering that your voice matters\, even when everything around you is trying to drown it out.” \nPacked with memorable musical numbers\, eccentric personalities and plenty of 1980s charm\, In Her Defence promises a lively and entertaining theatrical experience. The show combines the energy of a classic British comedy with the emotional depth of a story about self-discovery and resilience\, offering audiences both laughter and heart. \nThe production is particularly suited to audiences who enjoy original British musical theatre\, character-led comedy and stories that celebrate strong female voices. Its blend of humour\, warmth and recognisable social dynamics makes it an appealing addition to the Camden Fringe programme.

SUMMARY:Eyes See Song
DESCRIPTION:Six friends. Three secrets. One yearning hope. We enter a tangled web of love\, loyalty\, shame\, and survival\, as six women discover their world isn’t what it seems. Beneath the surface of six “ordinary” lives lie stories of reproductive health struggles\, sexual violence\, and addiction — stories so familiar they could belong to us\, our friends\, our mothers. As their masks fall away\, we’re invited to recognise our own hidden truths\, tucked deep in our bodies and away from those we love most. \nThese women call us into their circle — into song\, dance\, movement\, breathwork\, and collective release\, as they fight to loosen trauma’s grip on the body. With irresistible energy and magnetic charm\, Matty\, Lala\, Laure\, Wrinkles\, Z\, and Chlo remind us healing is never a solo act. It’s messy\, communal\, vulnerable\, and profoundly human.\nIn an age when isolation is becoming the norm and intimacy outsourced to screens\, Eyes See Song insists we return to each other\, loudly\, joyfully\, in full-bodied presence. It’s two parts a warm hug from your favourite aunt\, one part your best friends shaking you into your senses\, and three parts what your nervous system has been craving. For lovers of music\, movement and fearless storytelling\, ready to face the shadows and dance in the light; Join us! We’re holding space for you. \n“Unfurling and celebrating the dimensions of women through blending spoken word\, song and movement to honour layered experiences. ***”\n— Sheleina Somani\, Everything Theatre

SUMMARY:British Youth Music Theatre - Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:Fear spreads fast\, but judgment builds terrifying momentum. \nThis visceral new musical adaptation of Frankenstein rips into society’s gaze: how do we decide who is dangerous\, who is worthy\, and who is denied humanity altogether? Fast‑paced and drenched in tension\, it hurtles through a world where snap judgements turn lethal and rejection becomes a force of its own. \nPerformed by a ferocious cast of young performers\, this production never slows to catch its breath. Scenes snap by with cinematic intensity\, driven by an urgent\, propulsive score\, sharp jump scares and bold theatrical set pieces that keep audiences on edge. \nWritten by Victoria Gimby (Writer)\, Jimmy Jewell (Composer) and Nick Stimson (Lyricist)\, this adaptation exposes the violence of judgment itself. \nRelentless and unsettling\, Frankenstein is a gripping theatrical experience that leaves no room to look away.

SUMMARY:Sunrise for the Blind
DESCRIPTION:Six years after a sold out run in the then ‘Tristan Bates Theatre’\, Lee Lomas is bringing back his 5 star play Sunrise for the Blind. If the play was relevant in 2019 it’s perhaps even more relevant now with the rise of right wing politics\, major push backs against immigration and thousands taking to the streets to fly the English flag – is there a more poignant time for this play to be resurrected? \nA raw\, naturalistic portrayal of life in a bleak North Manchester town centre\, the play explores cycles of poverty\, racism\, and young adulthood. It follows a group of youths and families as their lives intersect around gossip\, forbidden relationships\, and a tragic escalation of tensions leading to violence. The story delves into lost potential\, generational frustration\, and the suffocating nature of small-town life. \nSunrise for the Blind pulls no punches\, a familiar theme of writer\, Lee Lomas\, it promises to be an eye opening experience with plenty of light to balance out the shade. \nWriter: Lee Lomas\nDirector: Andrew Darren Elkins\nProducer: Hülya Corty \n  \nGet your tickets HERE

SUMMARY:Dysmas Orbis — Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join published and exhibited London artist and author Robert John for the launch of Dysmas Orbis\, a speculative urban fantasy set within a hidden parallel London. \nRobert John has spent years creating a surreal visual version of London through his photographic and digital art practice. His work has been exhibited and published\, including LDN Reimagined\, a traditionally published art book with Unicorn Publishing Group. Dysmas Orbis is the literary continuation of that visual world — taking the surreal London he created through images and developing it into a five-book speculative fiction series. \nThe novel explores identity\, belonging\, relationships\, displacement and what it means to be seen\, drawing on Robert’s own experiences of growing up in South London and his father’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. \nExpect a London that is recognisable but not quite right — spider trees\, flower lamps\, giant machines\, secret societies and a hidden world existing alongside our own. \nThe launch will include a Q & A\, reading from the novel and a look behind the creation of the book and its visual world. Guests will receive a complimentary drink on arrival and a free special edition A5 art print with every signed first edition of Dysmas Orbis purchased on the night. \nEarly praise for Dysmas Orbis\n\n“His London is animate\, alarming\, astonishing.”— Iain Sinclair \n\n\n“Gripping and assured… Richly and beautifully written\, Dysmas Orbis is a tender story that will keep you turning the pages and stay with you long after the last page.”— Ivy Ngeow\, award-winning author \n\n\n“A brooding tale of fissured reality where freedom is swallowed whole.”— Sudhana Singh\, award-winning memoirist & journalist \n\n\n“Prepare to step into a gritty and mythical version of London\, with secret societies and spider trees. Robert John has created an alternate London that feels both familiar and fantastical.”— Tabish Khan\, art critic for Londonist

SUMMARY:Motopia
DESCRIPTION:“Once upon a time\, there was a forest\, where the sun and the wind and the people ran through the trees with free abandon. Welcome to Motopia!” \nA new piece of writing\, ‘Motopia’ is a musical choose-your-own adventure play where the choices of the protagonist are placed in the audience’s hands as they navigate their way through The Forest. Imagine the Fighting Fantasy books come to life\, or as a ‘New Stuff’ audience member put it\, “D&D the Musical.”\nJoin Pip as they navigate increasingly complex choices\, and the excitement\, loss and responsibility that free-will (or lack thereof) brings\, leading them to question “What do you do when you don’t know what to do?” \nThe world of Motopia is explored through a fairytale lens of childlike wonder\, with a cast of five actor-musicians\, original music and eccentric characters threaded throughout. \n  \nGet your tickets HERE

SUMMARY:Darling\, I think I'm Turning Into A Chicken
DESCRIPTION:Butterfly Eye Productions’ new totally absurd and slightly horrific Extravaganza comes to Camden Fringe after its premiere at Upstairs at the Gatehouse this July.\nBorn out of lived experiences\, this darkly comedic play about generational trauma and transformation\, ‘Darling\, I think I’m turning into a Chicken’ explores what happens when loss becomes the air a family breathes. \nFlorence has everything she’s ever wanted: a fiancée\, a thriving career\, and a perfect home. But when she starts to grow feathers\, her carefully constructed life begins to unravel. As the transformation worsens—and threatens to kill her—Florence discovers she’s not alone: her estranged family are changing too. To survive\, she must confront the past she’s spent a lifetime avoiding. \nAn imaginative\, physical and text-led exploration of how illness is not only biological\, but emotional\, social and generational\, asking what it takes to break cycles of inheritance—and whether healing is ever truly possible. \nWritten and Directed by India Rose Olsen\nMusic & Lyrics by Michael Fristot & Tess McLee \n  \nGet your tickets HERE

SUMMARY:Children of Empire
DESCRIPTION:A white father and his mixed-race daughter drive through their town one night in his cleaning van\, taking down English flags. Beginning as an act of reclamation\, the night progresses with paranoia whipping up between the pair\, bringing them to question their own trust of each other and the place they both grew up in. \nStarring MIFTA winner Elise Nguyen as Diana\, and Coronation Street star Gareth Berliner as Chris\, this new play by Jake Turner Chan was hailed as “a powerful interaction\, neatly encapsulated… evok[ing] a political landscape in a deeply intimate way” by a Young(ish) Perspective\, when it was put on as a part of Untold Collectiv’s ‘Short and Mighty’ scratch night. At the Rosemary Branch Theatre\, it makes its full-length debut. \n  \nThis play is a part of the Camden Fridge Festival. \nFor further details\, click HERE

SUMMARY:The Fourth London International Chinese Music Festival (LICMF) - Concerts\, Workshops & Classes
DESCRIPTION:The 4th London International Chinese Music Festival\, jointly initiated by institutions including SOAS\, University of London\, opened grandly in the summer of 2026. The festival once again presents new chapters in contemporary Chinese music while exploring East–West cultural intersections through different qualities\, textures\, ranges\, and sound stages\, creating new interpretations of tradition. \nThe “symphonization” of contemporary Chinese music does not simply mean allowing Chinese instruments to disappear into a Western orchestra. Rather\, it takes the distinctive “qi-yun” (氣韻)\, along with the depth and clarity found in Chinese instrumental music\, as its spiritual core and uses them to construct an overall musical narrative. The clearly articulated\, continuous notes of the piano\, combined with the resonant voice of the cello\, become a vast sonic landscape against which the bony percussive force of the guzheng\, the vigorous tremolo of the pipa\, and the ethereal tonal qualities of the dizi and xiao are brought into relief. \nThe tonal lines and aesthetics of Eastern instruments merge with Western polyphonic counterpoint. Traditional Chinese music is thus transformed from individual points of emotional expression into musical brushstrokes\, forming an aesthetic imagery of clouds and water. \nThis year’s festival embraces the same philosophy\, bringing together internationally acclaimed performers and emerging musicians. From traditional instruments such as the guqin and pipa to cross-cultural ensembles that blend Eastern and Western musical traditions\, the festival showcases the remarkable contemporary vitality of Chinese music. Audiences are invited to experience live the magnificent musical chapters created by interweaving traditional Chinese music with contemporary musical language. \nThe festival features a strong line-up\, with 18 performing musicians—including 15 core UK-based musicians and scholars and three internationally invited musicians—along with two prominent interdisciplinary collaborators/composers\, several ensembles\, and prize-winning competition students. Of particular note is the 27 August performance\, featuring works by Professors Michael Ellison and Ray Lin and presenting the cross-cultural collaboration Ensemble Shuimo (水墨). Both professors serve as composers and mentors\, offering audiences an exceptional encounter between Eastern and Western musical cultures. \nThe Chinese traditional instruments featured in the concerts include plucked\, bowed\, wind\, and percussion instruments: the guqin (seven-stringed zither)\, guzheng (plucked zither)\, pipa (four-stringed lute)\, zhongruan (moon-shaped lute)\, sanxian (three-stringed lute)\, erhu (two-stringed fiddle)\, dizi (bamboo transverse flute)\, xiao (end-blown bamboo flute)\, xun (Chinese vessel flute)\, and Chinese folk percussion. The Western instruments used in the East–West cross-cultural ensemble on 27 August are piano and cello. \nZhu Xizhe and the World Premiere of Nān \nAt the 2026 4th London International Chinese Music Festival\, young guzheng performer Xizhe Zhu has been invited as a special guest artist. Together with erhu performer Huang Ziyang and other musicians\, she will give the world premiere of Nān (囡)\, a new work composed by He Qianqian. \nInspired by a Shanghai nursery rhyme from the Jiangnan region\, the work builds on traditional Chinese tonal aesthetics while innovatively juxtaposing the plucked texture of the guzheng\, the bowed lines of the erhu\, and the deep timbre of the Western bassoon. Through contemporary extended techniques on the guzheng and the interplay of the three instruments\, the music layers two overlapping images of memory: the carefree innocence of children chasing and playing\, and the distant\, affectionate calls of elders echoing through time. Its playful and agile melodies reveal a highly reflective musical dialogue between East and West. \nA graduate of the Philosophy\, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme at the University of Warwick\, Zhu Xizhe received rigorous musical training within the Shanghai Conservatory of Music system from an early age. At fourteen\, she passed the highest level of its examination system and subsequently obtained the professional Performance Grade II certification. Her performing experience includes serving as principal soloist in a concerto at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre and winning gold awards at international competitions. Her interdisciplinary background allows her performances to transcend technical display. In Nān\, she precisely employs the guzheng’s clear\, crisp plucking; graceful\, fluid glissandi; and powerful\, full-bodied sweeping tremolo techniques\, transforming the gentle memories of Jiangnan culture into a contemporary sonic aesthetic characterised by visual vividness and openness. \nAs the timbres of diverse instruments pass and transform their individual lines through the performance space\, they also reflect the continuing development of traditional Chinese music in the contemporary world\, exploring cultural boundaries and deeper forms of resonance. From the subtle breathing and exhalation of individual instruments to the vast echoes of polyphonic ensemble playing\, contemporary Chinese music takes on a clear\, luminous presence\, gently unfolding in the London summer a cultural collision of a new era. Every listener who loves music and culture is invited to attend and witness a dialogue and resonance that transcends both time and geography. \nPerformance & Festival Information \nFestival: The Fourth London International Chinese Music Festival 2026\nDates: 24–28 August 2026\nOrganisers: China Arts (UK)\, SOAS\, University of London\, Chinese National Orchestra Society (CNOS)\, and London Youlan Qin Society. \nSound of Nature Concert\n26 August 2026\, 19:00\nKamran Djam Lecture Theatre\, SOAS\, University of London\n10 Thornhaugh St\, London WC1H 0XG\nFocus: the beauty of traditional Chinese instruments and performances of music associated with intangible cultural heritage. \nGala Concert – Sound of East in the West\n27 August 2026\, 19:00–21:30\nHoly Sepulchre London\nHolborn Viaduct\, London EC1A 2DQ\nFeatured cross-cultural programme: Silk String Quartet\, Siji Quartet\, and Ensemble Shuimo\, the contemporary East Asian ensemble directed by Professor Michael Ellison\, performing cross-cultural works by Ray Lin and Michael Ellison. \nShowcase Concert\n28 August 2026\, 19:00–21:30\nKamran Djam Lecture Theatre\, SOAS\, University of London\nFeaturing prize-winning competition participants\, outstanding young performers\, and professional musicians performing together. \n  \nOfficial website and ticket information:   \nukchinesemusic.org/london-international-chinese-music-festival-2026. \nWritten by critic Hu Jungyi. \n  \nHire London’s Chinese Musicians for Chinese Themed Corporate Events and Chinese New Year Celebrations in London \n

SUMMARY:EARTHBALL + CLASSIC FORM MORF (Charles Hayward & Nathan Greywater)
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nEARTHBALL\nCLASSIC FORM MORF (Charles Hayward & Nathan Greywater)\nTuesday 25 August\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £13 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Y653a0c64eb6 \nEARTHBALL are an avant/noise/rock wrecking ball of a band from Nanaimo\, Canada. Rooted in total improvisation\, free expression\, and a deeply psychedelic sensibility\, EarthBall operate on pure instinct. They hurtle onwards in a combustion of spontaneous composition\, shooting from the hip\, as they fall out of the sky ablaze. The group encompass Isabel Ford (vocals\, bass)\, John Brennan (drums\, percussion)\, Jeremy Van Wyke (vocals\, guitar\, trumpet)\, Kellan Maclaughlin (guitar\, talkbox)\, and Liam Murphy (saxophone). Each member brings a rich and varied musical history\, with past and present projects including Shearing Pinx\, Plan Your Future\, Kamikaze Nurse\, Eschatons\, and Psychedelic Dirt. Collectively and individually\, they have collaborated with artists such as Deerhoof\, Raven Chacon\, Chris Corsano\, and William Hooker\, deepening the band’s exploratory reach and collective language. \nSince forming in 2019\, EarthBall have released six cassettes and three fervently received LPs on Upset The Rhythm\, including November’s widely acclaimed Outside Over There. Their latest release\, Actual Earth Music – Volume 3 & 4 (out June 26th)\, follows the first instalment in the series and captures two mind-quaking highlights from last winter’s European tour. This is EarthBall plunging to full fathom five\, transforming into something rich and strange – channeling the fleeting moment as it fractures\, erupts\, and dissolves into the unknown. Actual Earth Music – Volume 3 & 4 marks another ascent in EarthBall’s ever-expanding\, totemic discography\, an ecstatic storm of raw immediacy and unfiltered expression. EarthBall came\, conjured and opened the portal! Blink and it’s gone. What was that? Actual Earth Music! \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/outside-over-there \nCLASSIC FORM MORF is an experimental duo featuring avant-garde drumming legend Charles Hayward\, electric bassist/sound artist Nathan Greywater and two radios. The project specialises in wild\, improvised live sets where the duo plays alongside and against live broadcasts from classical music and talk radio stations. Charles Hayward is a founding member of the experimental rock groups This Heat and Camberwell Now. Since the late 80’s he has concentrated on solo projects and collaborations including Massacre (with Bill Laswell and Fred Frith)\, Monkey Puzzle Trio\, Albert Newton (with Pat Thomas and John Edwards) and This Is Not This Heat which toured the UK\, Europe\, USA and Japan between 2016-2019 performing expanded versions of This Heat’s oeuvre to unfaltering critical acclaim. Hayward’s latest group\, Abstract Concrete\, formed from London players from a diversity of European underground scenes\, released its self-titled debut album in November 2023. Nathan Greywater has been on the London experimental and improv scene for over a decade now\, initially as an electronic musician with Harmergeddon\, and more recently focussing on electric bass. SUMMARY:Journey to Nutopia: People’s Emergency Briefing – Climate Action Special
DESCRIPTION:Journey to Nutopia returns for a one-off screening and panel. \nA lot’s happened since we launched Journey to Nutopia back in 2018. Our founding motto – ‘refuting the inevitability of global dystopia’ isn’t getting any easier\, but that’s all the more reason to look for the places in our doom-flooded news environment where The Work is happening – especially around the climate crisis. \nThe first Journey to Nutopia was a three-day programme of talks\, spoken word and acid house music as part of Birmingham’s Lunar Festival in 2018. Authors\, activists\, artists\, academics\, psychedelic researchers\, poets and acid house DJs came together to boost ‘positive future narratives that refute the inevitability of a global dystopia’. It was a celebration of the DIY aesthetic\, connectivity\, community\, touching grass\, joy as resistance – all that good stuff which we will need to draw on as our weather\, our politics\, and our shared ‘reality’ becomes fractured\, wilder and more unpredictable. \nWe are taking part in the countrywide screening initiative for the People’s Emergency Briefing documentary – a film that lays out the facts of Where We Are\, but also the next steps we can take together to get our governments to grasp this crispy old nettle and bring more urgency to mitigating the incoming mass extinction event of our age. The briefing is currently being shown all across the UK – from church halls to trade union meetings. It brings together the science and national implications in one compelling film\, designed for communities to watch together with their MP and other local decision makers to see the same evidence – on the record – as those briefed in Westminster. The film will be followed by what we are pretty confident will be a lively panel discussion about what WE can do beyond the Bag-for-Life of it all\, to be part of the solution/surviving what comes next and not just hopeless witnesses to the distraction and destruction of the natural world happening on our screens and increasingly in our lived experience. \nConfirmed panel guests include: \nDeborah Curtis – The Great Imagining\nSarah Corbett – The Craftivist Collective\nJami – London School of Solar Punk \nThere’s no time to waste. As the film shows\, we have made some progress since the XR protests and Net Zero promises but we need to accelarate not take our foot off the proverbial gas. It’s time to come together\, raise our voices and demand our governments take the kind of bold action required to make lasting change. But it’s not just about them; it’s also about us! It’s also time to bring a bit of 21st century\, solar punk\, craftivist\, DIY\, Make it Make Sense energy into proceedings… \nJoin us! \nCo-hosted by Richard Norris & Michelle Olley. \nDate: Sunday 24th August\, 7pm – Live at The Cockpit\nTickets: Pay what you can – £3 / £5 / £10\nWebsite: https://www.thecockpit.org.uk/show/journey_to_nutopia_3

Come and join local theatre makers and artists to create a world where Church Street goes wild across August. \nWe’re taking part in Westminster City Council’s Inside Out outdoor arts festival this summer. The festival showcases fun and unique cultural events across the city and best of all\, events are free for everybody to enjoy! \nFor the first three Sundays in August\, The Cockpit will be hosting creative making days outside in the triangle on Church Street. They are for everyone of any age to come together and build a temporary art installation\, using arts and crafts to make plants\, animals and fungi. Each Sunday it will grow and take up more of the space and then be cleared away at the end of the day. On the fourth Sunday\, this will culminate in a short physical theatre performance that will take place in the community made art installation on the triangle. \n  \nFor more details click HERE

SUMMARY:Sir Richard Bishop + Arianne Churchman + Benedict Drew
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nSIR RICHARD BISHOP\nARIANNE CHURCHMAN & BENEDICT DREW\nFriday 21 August\nSt Pancras Old Church\, Pancras Road\, King’s Cross\, NW1 1UL\n7.30pm | £14 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/hea0794d9d24 \nSIR RICHARD BISHOP is renowned for his mercurial guitar-playing for 26 years with Seattle ethno-delic legends Sun City Girls\, but he has wrought a distinguished solo canon as well. He combines soulfulness and advanced technique with a panache that’s nearly unrivalled among today’s guitarists. Bishop strums spiritual with incantatory ragas\, free-folk excursions\, crystalline flamenco flourishes\, ruddy Appalachian folk\, Middle Eastern-tinged fantasias and gypsy arabesques. This is eclecticism done with respect and third-eye-dilating filigree; his compositions attain a sepia-toned wistfulness and a psychedelic complexity. \nBishop’s first solo record\, ‘Salvador Kali’\, was released by John Fahey’s esteemed Revenant Records label in 1998. Locust Music issued his second record\, ‘Improvika’ (2004)\, which consisted of nine extemporaneous pieces for solo acoustic guitar. More recently\, ‘Tangier Sessions’ was released by Drag City in 2015. It consists of a series of improvisations recorded in Tangier\, Morocco in 2014 using a 19th-century parlour guitar of mysterious origin. Bishop’s latest album\, ‘Hillbilly Ragas ‘was released last September to widespread acclaim\, whilst Drag City are currently prepping new title ‘Hillbilly Erotica’ as a speculative\, avant-garde sequel to his stripped-back acoustic explorations. \nhttps://sirrichardbishop.com/ \nARIANNE CHURCHMAN & BENEDICT DREW are visual artists and musicians. Based in London and Kent\, their work together draws from English traditional music\, minimalism\, music concrete and electronic music. Using analogue synthesisers\, acoustic instruments and layered vocals\, their work starts with traditional song\, with its lyrics corrupted and reimagined; it is then woven into sonic collages and landscapes\, each layer spiralling out a little further from the last\, building into ecstatic melodies\, rhythms and dreamscapes. Since 2020 they have recorded a selection of traditional May songs to coincide with May Day\, releasing them digitally through Drew’s Thanet Tape Centre label. In 2024\, these were compiled into a 2xLP release\, MAY\, and was released by Loves Devotee. Their latest record\, The Tree of the Left Hand\, was released by Folklore Tapes in 2025. \nhttps://folkloretapes.bandcamp.com/album/the-tree-of-the-left-hand

SUMMARY:Music Hath No Borders - South African Buskaid Ensemble in Concert - 21.08.26
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical fundraising concert with ten members of the internationally renowned South African Buskaid Ensemble – a performance of live classical music from Handel and Elgar to township Kwela music. \nThis is a poignant venue for Buskaid: Buskaid’s Founder\, Rosemary Nalden\, is the daughter of the late Charles Nalden CBE\, one of Coram’s most distinguished foundlings. The Buskaid musicians are themselves no strangers to hardship: like Coram\, Buskaid offers transformative opportunities for less advantaged young people. \nFor this musical celebration\, Rosemary has chosen music to link both charities\, including the Chaconne from Terpsichore by Handel\, Coram’s most famous benefactor\, and Elgar’s Sospiri\, honouring Rosemary’s father\, an accomplished harpist who loved the music of Edward Elgar. The concert will end with a rousing burst of township ‘Kwela’ music\, arranged by the Buskaid musicians themselves. \nTickets and Timings \nTickets can be booked on Eventbrite. \nAll tickets include a welcome drink\, and private access to the Foundling Museum‘s exhibition\, including the special exhibition display\, 300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season. \n6 pm: Access to the Foundling Museum for all guests. \n7 pm-9 pm: Concert with interval. \nAbout Buskaid \nThe Buskaid Music School was founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the less privileged local community in Diepkloof Soweto. At its inception\, it comprised just 15 children; its current membership stands at 82. To meet this demand\, in 2002 Buskaid initiated a teacher-training course for all its students; all the musicians playing tonight are employed by Buskaid as highly-skilled string teachers. \nThe Buskaid Ensemble is world-renowned for its high-performance standards and its innate grasp of musical style\, and as a result\, has undertaken 28 international tours to Europe and the Americas. It is the only African orchestra to have performed at the BBC Proms. \nThe Ensemble has collaborated with many distinguished artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Melvyn Tan\, Steven Isserlis and Karl Jenkins. It has performed in the presence of numerous dignitaries\, notably the late Nelson Mandela\, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, King Charles III\, and Michelle Obama. \nProgramme \nJean-Philippe Rameau – Air pour les Guerriers; Entrée De Polymnie; Contredanses I & II \nHenry Purcell – Fairest Isle; Rondeau; If Love’s a Sweet Passion; Chaconne \nEdward Elgar – Sospiri (Sighs) \nJean Sibelius – Impromptu \nGeorge Frideric Handel – Terpsichore HWV 8b: Chacconne \nKwela\, Afro-jazz and Afro-pop (Arr. Buskaid musicians) \nBook Classical String Ensembles for Events in the UK via Music for London.
