SUMMARY:MARISA ANDERSON + LUCE MAWDLSEY - London Concert
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nMARISA ANDERSON\nLUCE MAWDLSEY\nFriday 4 September\nChats Palace\, 42-44 Brooksby’s Walk\, London\, E9 6DF\n7.30pm | £16 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/jf9efbbf668f \nMARISA ANDERSON channels the history of the guitar and stretches the boundaries of tradition. Her playing is fluid\, emotional\, and masterful\, featuring compositions and improvisations that re-imagine the landscape of American music.  The New Yorker calls Anderson ‘one of the most distinctive guitar players of her generation’\, and NPR refers to her as among ‘this era’s most powerful players’. Her music has been featured in Rolling Stone\, NPR\, The New York Times\, Pitchfork\, the BBC and The Wire. Festival appearances include Big Ears\, Pitchfork Midwinter\, Le Guess Who and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. \nIn addition to her solo work\, Anderson is sought after as a collaborator and composer. Swallowtail\, her second record in duo with drummer Jim White\, was released in May 2024 on Thrill Jockey Records. 2024 also saw the release of the feature film score ‘ A Perfect Day For Caribou’\, as well as appearances on records by Charlie Parr\, Myriam Gendron and Big|Brave. In addition to multiple solo releases\, past projects include 2021’s Lost Futures with guitarist William Tyler\, and contributions to recordings by Matmos\, Tara Jane O’Neil\, Beth Ditto\, Sharon Van Etten and Circuit Des Yeux. Anderson’s new album\, ‘The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music’ (out now on Thrill Jockey)\, is a collection of songs culled from the private record collection of the late Harry Smith. Assembled by Anderson after a chance encounter led to an opportunity to study and explore this treasure trove of music\, the Anthology focuses on music from places that the United States has been in conflict with since 1970: Southeast Asia\, the USSR and the Arabic and Islamic regions of the world.\nhttps://marisaanderson.bandcamp.com/ \nLUCE MAWDSLEY specialises in expansively cinematic instrumentals conjuring queer cowboy landscapes via the Northern English coastline. Luce Mawdsley is an autistic nonbinary composer and multiinstrumentalist based in Liverpool with a practice rooted in progressive experimentation. Drawing from a range of poetic art forms\, mythologies\, and landscapes\, their work uses personal experience of neurodivergence\, mental health disorders\, and queerness as a ligature from which to generate subversive explorations of gender\, place\, and identity formation. \nhttps://www.lucemawdsleymusic.com/ \n  \nBook Live Bands for Events in London

SUMMARY:The Fourth London International Chinese Music Festival (LICMF) - Concerts\, Workshops & Classes
DESCRIPTION:The 4th London International Chinese Music Festival\, jointly initiated by institutions including SOAS\, University of London\, opened grandly in the summer of 2026. The festival once again presents new chapters in contemporary Chinese music while exploring East–West cultural intersections through different qualities\, textures\, ranges\, and sound stages\, creating new interpretations of tradition. \nThe “symphonization” of contemporary Chinese music does not simply mean allowing Chinese instruments to disappear into a Western orchestra. Rather\, it takes the distinctive “qi-yun” (氣韻)\, along with the depth and clarity found in Chinese instrumental music\, as its spiritual core and uses them to construct an overall musical narrative. The clearly articulated\, continuous notes of the piano\, combined with the resonant voice of the cello\, become a vast sonic landscape against which the bony percussive force of the guzheng\, the vigorous tremolo of the pipa\, and the ethereal tonal qualities of the dizi and xiao are brought into relief. \nThe tonal lines and aesthetics of Eastern instruments merge with Western polyphonic counterpoint. Traditional Chinese music is thus transformed from individual points of emotional expression into musical brushstrokes\, forming an aesthetic imagery of clouds and water. \nThis year’s festival embraces the same philosophy\, bringing together internationally acclaimed performers and emerging musicians. From traditional instruments such as the guqin and pipa to cross-cultural ensembles that blend Eastern and Western musical traditions\, the festival showcases the remarkable contemporary vitality of Chinese music. Audiences are invited to experience live the magnificent musical chapters created by interweaving traditional Chinese music with contemporary musical language. \nThe festival features a strong line-up\, with 18 performing musicians—including 15 core UK-based musicians and scholars and three internationally invited musicians—along with two prominent interdisciplinary collaborators/composers\, several ensembles\, and prize-winning competition students. Of particular note is the 27 August performance\, featuring works by Professors Michael Ellison and Ray Lin and presenting the cross-cultural collaboration Ensemble Shuimo (水墨). Both professors serve as composers and mentors\, offering audiences an exceptional encounter between Eastern and Western musical cultures. \nThe Chinese traditional instruments featured in the concerts include plucked\, bowed\, wind\, and percussion instruments: the guqin (seven-stringed zither)\, guzheng (plucked zither)\, pipa (four-stringed lute)\, zhongruan (moon-shaped lute)\, sanxian (three-stringed lute)\, erhu (two-stringed fiddle)\, dizi (bamboo transverse flute)\, xiao (end-blown bamboo flute)\, xun (Chinese vessel flute)\, and Chinese folk percussion. The Western instruments used in the East–West cross-cultural ensemble on 27 August are piano and cello. \nZhu Xizhe and the World Premiere of Nān \nAt the 2026 4th London International Chinese Music Festival\, young guzheng performer Xizhe Zhu has been invited as a special guest artist. Together with erhu performer Huang Ziyang and other musicians\, she will give the world premiere of Nān (囡)\, a new work composed by He Qianqian. \nInspired by a Shanghai nursery rhyme from the Jiangnan region\, the work builds on traditional Chinese tonal aesthetics while innovatively juxtaposing the plucked texture of the guzheng\, the bowed lines of the erhu\, and the deep timbre of the Western bassoon. Through contemporary extended techniques on the guzheng and the interplay of the three instruments\, the music layers two overlapping images of memory: the carefree innocence of children chasing and playing\, and the distant\, affectionate calls of elders echoing through time. Its playful and agile melodies reveal a highly reflective musical dialogue between East and West. \nA graduate of the Philosophy\, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme at the University of Warwick\, Zhu Xizhe received rigorous musical training within the Shanghai Conservatory of Music system from an early age. At fourteen\, she passed the highest level of its examination system and subsequently obtained the professional Performance Grade II certification. Her performing experience includes serving as principal soloist in a concerto at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre and winning gold awards at international competitions. Her interdisciplinary background allows her performances to transcend technical display. In Nān\, she precisely employs the guzheng’s clear\, crisp plucking; graceful\, fluid glissandi; and powerful\, full-bodied sweeping tremolo techniques\, transforming the gentle memories of Jiangnan culture into a contemporary sonic aesthetic characterised by visual vividness and openness. \nAs the timbres of diverse instruments pass and transform their individual lines through the performance space\, they also reflect the continuing development of traditional Chinese music in the contemporary world\, exploring cultural boundaries and deeper forms of resonance. From the subtle breathing and exhalation of individual instruments to the vast echoes of polyphonic ensemble playing\, contemporary Chinese music takes on a clear\, luminous presence\, gently unfolding in the London summer a cultural collision of a new era. Every listener who loves music and culture is invited to attend and witness a dialogue and resonance that transcends both time and geography. \nPerformance & Festival Information \nFestival: The Fourth London International Chinese Music Festival 2026\nDates: 24–28 August 2026\nOrganisers: China Arts (UK)\, SOAS\, University of London\, Chinese National Orchestra Society (CNOS)\, and London Youlan Qin Society. \nSound of Nature Concert\n26 August 2026\, 19:00\nKamran Djam Lecture Theatre\, SOAS\, University of London\n10 Thornhaugh St\, London WC1H 0XG\nFocus: the beauty of traditional Chinese instruments and performances of music associated with intangible cultural heritage. \nGala Concert – Sound of East in the West\n27 August 2026\, 19:00–21:30\nHoly Sepulchre London\nHolborn Viaduct\, London EC1A 2DQ\nFeatured cross-cultural programme: Silk String Quartet\, Siji Quartet\, and Ensemble Shuimo\, the contemporary East Asian ensemble directed by Professor Michael Ellison\, performing cross-cultural works by Ray Lin and Michael Ellison. \nShowcase Concert\n28 August 2026\, 19:00–21:30\nKamran Djam Lecture Theatre\, SOAS\, University of London\nFeaturing prize-winning competition participants\, outstanding young performers\, and professional musicians performing together. \n  \nOfficial website and ticket information:   \nukchinesemusic.org/london-international-chinese-music-festival-2026. \nWritten by critic Hu Jungyi. \n  \nHire London’s Chinese Musicians for Chinese Themed Corporate Events and Chinese New Year Celebrations in London \n

SUMMARY:Music Hath No Borders - South African Buskaid Ensemble in Concert - 21.08.26
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical fundraising concert with ten members of the internationally renowned South African Buskaid Ensemble – a performance of live classical music from Handel and Elgar to township Kwela music. \nThis is a poignant venue for Buskaid: Buskaid’s Founder\, Rosemary Nalden\, is the daughter of the late Charles Nalden CBE\, one of Coram’s most distinguished foundlings. The Buskaid musicians are themselves no strangers to hardship: like Coram\, Buskaid offers transformative opportunities for less advantaged young people. \nFor this musical celebration\, Rosemary has chosen music to link both charities\, including the Chaconne from Terpsichore by Handel\, Coram’s most famous benefactor\, and Elgar’s Sospiri\, honouring Rosemary’s father\, an accomplished harpist who loved the music of Edward Elgar. The concert will end with a rousing burst of township ‘Kwela’ music\, arranged by the Buskaid musicians themselves. \nTickets and Timings \nTickets can be booked on Eventbrite. \nAll tickets include a welcome drink\, and private access to the Foundling Museum‘s exhibition\, including the special exhibition display\, 300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season. \n6 pm: Access to the Foundling Museum for all guests. \n7 pm-9 pm: Concert with interval. \nAbout Buskaid \nThe Buskaid Music School was founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the less privileged local community in Diepkloof Soweto. At its inception\, it comprised just 15 children; its current membership stands at 82. To meet this demand\, in 2002 Buskaid initiated a teacher-training course for all its students; all the musicians playing tonight are employed by Buskaid as highly-skilled string teachers. \nThe Buskaid Ensemble is world-renowned for its high-performance standards and its innate grasp of musical style\, and as a result\, has undertaken 28 international tours to Europe and the Americas. It is the only African orchestra to have performed at the BBC Proms. \nThe Ensemble has collaborated with many distinguished artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Melvyn Tan\, Steven Isserlis and Karl Jenkins. It has performed in the presence of numerous dignitaries\, notably the late Nelson Mandela\, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, King Charles III\, and Michelle Obama. \nProgramme \nJean-Philippe Rameau – Air pour les Guerriers; Entrée De Polymnie; Contredanses I & II \nHenry Purcell – Fairest Isle; Rondeau; If Love’s a Sweet Passion; Chaconne \nEdward Elgar – Sospiri (Sighs) \nJean Sibelius – Impromptu \nGeorge Frideric Handel – Terpsichore HWV 8b: Chacconne \nKwela\, Afro-jazz and Afro-pop (Arr. SUMMARY:Linda Smith & Band + Trash Kit + Stuart Moxham
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nLINDA SMITH & BAND\nTRASH KIT\nSTUART MOXHAM\nThursday 20 August\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £14 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/X7d766a04577 \nLINDA SMITH is a pioneer of home recording who self-released her music originally on cassette starting in 1987. In the early 90’s\, indie labels Slumberland and Harriet Records expanded her reach with the release of two seven inch eps. Recently\, Brooklyn label Captured Tracks has reissued two complete albums on vinyl\, and she has begun to tour in the US and internationally for the first time. Upset The Rhythm released a recent split single between Smith and The Smashing Times last year too. Paste magazine called Linda Smith “a hidden treasure of America’s pop underground”\, while Jangle Pop Hub has written that “essentially this is the best bedroom pop you are ever likely to hear\, directly from an age that did not really know what to do with it”. For this rare UK show Linda will be joined by her live band. \nhttps://lindasmith2.bandcamp.com/ \nTRASH KIT are Ray Aggs (guitar\, vocals)\, Rachel Horwood (drums\, vocals) and Clémentine March (bass). Three deeply creative individuals who play in a multitude of other groups including Bas Jan and Sacred Paws\, not to mention their solo outings. Their songs\, once succinct\, patchwork post-punk numbers of an honest diary-like nature\, now tussle more with long-form songwriting\, expeditious polyphony and cascades of sung-spoke vocals. Although Trash Kit have their forebears in bands like Sleater Kinney\, The Ex and The Raincoats\, their sound is still very much their own take on facing forwards and relies as much on the naturalism of an internalised folk music as on their sincerity of vision. Since forming in 2009\, Trash Kit have released three albums for Upset The Rhythm and a selection of singles. Trash Kit’s approach to life as with music is one of openness\, inclusion and potential\, and their most recent album ‘Horizon’ has this in dutiful abundance. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/horizon \nSTUART MOXHAM requires little introduction. Few artists arrive as compellingly yet elusively as did Stuart Moxham upon the startling debut of Young Marble Giant’s sole studio album\, Colossal Youth (Rough Trade\, 1980). Initial excitement was thrust upon the young Alison Statton\, who sang songs written by Stuart with a couple of exceptions. The unaffected tone of her voice was in steep contrast to the typical goings-on in that still quite punk time\, but it was what she sang that fully sold it. Moxham’s lyrics were both intensely personal and woefully oblique. There seemed to be a sort of story in there. After those YMG days\, Moxham worked on a project called The G!st and released an album and several singles also on Rough Trade. Since the mid-80s Moxham has focused mainly on solo acoustic work\, releasing 17 albums to date\, including one by songwriting duo Moxham & Halliday. Stuart Moxham is a composer of the upper echelon of innate talent who combines avant-garde ideas with deceptively forthright personal lyrics\, solid hooks\, ambience and vaguely off-centre instrumentation which defies the casual marketplace as confoundingly as it ever did to the underground. Last year Tiny Global Productions released Moxham’s most recent album ‘Winter Sun’\, featuring Linda Smith on backing vocals.\nhttps://stuartmoxham.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Dünyada - London Theatre
DESCRIPTION:This August\, internationally acclaimed actor and director Mehmet Ali Nuroğlu brings his visceral\, high-intensity solo performance Dünyada to Camden Fringe.\nReimagining Will Eno’s celebrated monologue Title and Deed\, the production arrives in London fresh from Istanbul’s underground scene\, offering an evocative exploration of migration\, identity drift\, and the fragile necessity of being witnessed in a digital age. \nArmed only with a microphone\, a projection screen\, and a fixed camera\, Nuroğlu performs a dual role as both actor and live cinematographer. \nIn a raw\, technical struggle\, he manages lighting and soundscapes in real-time\, creating a “parallax” between his physical body and his digital ghost. \nThe production transforms the audience from mere spectators into active material\, as the camera turns to film the watchers\, projecting their silent presence into the heart of the monologue. \nThe work is set to a melancholic R&B and hip-hop score from the album “Başkası” by musician Çağrı Sinci. Stripping away theatrical polish\, the production refuses to conceal its mechanics. \nWhat emerges is a sonic and visual sculpture that confronts the ache of placelessness\, asking what it means to belong when one’s home feels imagined\, and what it means to be seen when your own name feels foreign in your mouth. \nIntimate\, funny\, unsettling\, and deeply\, deeply human. A salute to the progress in life\, to being here\, now\, right now. On stage.

SUMMARY:What Nature Tells Me – Orchestra for the Earth
DESCRIPTION:What Nature Tells Me\n\n\nAlpine Tour Launch Concert\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 20 June 2026 · 7.30pm \nSt John’s Waterloo\, SE1 8TY \nPublic booking is open. \nPrice – Pay what you can (suggested: £15) \nOrchestra for the Earth launches its 2026 Alpine Tour\, What Nature Tells Me\, with a London concert at St John’s Waterloo on Saturday 20 June\, before travelling by train and coach to Austria for a series of performances and education projects in places closely connected to Gustav Mahler’s life and music. \nNow in its ninth year\, the Alpine Tour has become one of the orchestra’s defining projects: an ongoing exploration of the relationship between music\, landscape and listening\, centred on Mahler and the Alpine environments in which much of his music was conceived.\nThe 2026 programme\, What Nature Tells Me\, traces a single musical arc through Mahler’s life\, from the freshness and folk-like early songs to the profound stillness of ‘Der Abschied’ (‘The Farewell) from Das Lied von der Erde (‘The Song of the Earth’). The London concert features\nrising British baritone Michael Lafferty\, with Mahler’s works arranged for chamber orchestra by conductor John Warner. \nThe programme also includes the world premiere of Eat Your Rage\, a new commission by London-based composer Zhenyan Li\, whose work has been performed by ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Modern. The commission is a response to Mahler’s musical evocations of nature and forms part of OE’s ongoing commitment to placing new music alongside established repertoire within the same artistic and environmental context. \nFollowing the London launch\, the orchestra travels to Austria from 22–26 June\, including a performance at the Gustav Mahler Festival in Steinbach am Attersee\, where Mahler spent several summers composing\, and a concert on an open-air stage in Steinach am Brenner\, another\nplace closely associated with his summer retreats. When Bruno Walter visited Mahler in Steinbach in 1896\, he marvelled at the surrounding landscape. Mahler replied simply: “No need to look around — I have already composed it all.” The Alpine Tour returns that idea to its source\, placing the music back into dialogue with the\nenvironments that helped shape it. \nMarina Mahler\, Founding Patron of Orchestra for the Earth\, said: “It is deeply moving to see my grandfather’s music brought back into the landscapes that inspired it\, and to see young people included in that experience. This kind of thoughtful\, living engagement with Mahler’s work is both true to its origins and urgently relevant now.” \nWhat Nature Tells Me takes place at St John’s Waterloo\, London\, on Saturday 20 June 2026 at 7.30pm. \nLondon is the home to several dynamic String Ensembles\, including soloists and String Quartets. They are available for hire from Music for London.
