SUMMARY:USA to UK - American immigrant artists contribution to British visual culture since 1900.
DESCRIPTION:Following last year’s revealing exhibition Us: From There to Here which exhibited artworks by artists by country of birth and traced their journeys to Great Britain\, we are excited to continue the concept by curating an exhibition about the contribution of American artists who migrated to this country titled USA to UK from the Ben Uri Collection. \nThe artists include Alfred Cohen\, David Gryn\, Edward Toledano\, Howard Baer\, Jacob Epstein\, Jacqueline Morreau\, L. Michèle Franklin\, Phyllis Gorlick-King\, R. B. Kitaj and Sandra Fisher. \nWe will also be unveiling a remarkable new acquisition by George Grosz who fled the Nazi regime to find safety in New York. This new acquisition brings our collection of his WW2 works to 3 which is the strongest body of work by Grosz in all UK Museums.

SUMMARY:Paolo Battistutta - Transits
DESCRIPTION:Transits as passages\, metamorphoses\, transformations: the title of Paolo Battistutta’s exhibition at Cris Contini Contemporary gallery in Notting Hill\, encapsulates both our present and the essence of his practice\, naming the constant shift between figuration – faces\, portraits\, human presence – and the abstract–informal field – the celebrated tondos and beyond. Timed with Frieze London the exhibition enters the wider conversation animating the city’s contemporary art scene that week \nOn large canvases\, Battistutta stages a visceral confrontation with painting: matter and thought\, gesture and figure push the image beyond its boundaries. Paint becomes psyche—emotion before figure—driven by an informal\, impulsive energy. His monumental visages\, cut through by vivid chromatic fields\, open a journey into interiority: less “beautiful” portraits than raw mirrors of vulnerability\, where deformation sharpens insight. \nThe other pole of his work unfolds in the tondos: dynamic\, layered masses radiating a primordial energy—arenas of impulses\, events and tensions—where the circular form offers unity alongside maximum compositional freedom. Here the ego recedes\, form fractures\, and an almost iconoclastic impulse advances; painting becomes a transit of body and soul. \nThe exhibition—produced by Cris Contini Contemporary\, coordinated by Sandra Sanson\, and accompanied by a catalogue published by Grafica Antiga—features critical texts by Lorena Gava\, Pasquale Lettieri\, Cristian Contini\, and Fulvio Granocchia. \n  \nPaolo Battistutta – Transits \nCris Contini Contemporary\, Notting Hill\, London\n14 October – 15 November 2025 \nVernissage: 14 October at 6PM

SUMMARY:Silent Systems: Breathing Devices (29th Made in Prague Festival)
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition curated by British curator Daré Dada\, gathers works by Appau Junior Boakye-Yiadom\, Filomena Borecká\, Esther Gaton\, Evar Hussanyi and Henrique Paris to reimagine breath as more than a biological act. \n\nBreathing becomes rhythm and pulse\, presence and absence\, the invisible measure of life that extends beyond the body into objects\, spaces\, and systems. It invites viewers to ask: What is a breath of a city\, a machine\, a material archive? How might breathing become a metaphor for cultural memory\, ecological interdependence\, or technological survival? Filomena Borecká’s practice\, attuned to the subtle energies of air and time\, anchors the exhibition’s meditation on breath as both force and metaphor. Here\, stillness is unsettled: objects expand and contract\, silent systems exhale\, and the unseen currents of existence ripple quietly through matter\, inviting us to reconsider our entanglement with the material world. The works gathered here challenge the presumed stillness of things\, offering instead an ecology of quiet urgencies\, of devices that hold air\, circulate energy\, or embody invisible rhythms. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING\nFriday 31 October 2025\, 6 – 7.30 pm  \nFree entry\, REGISTER NOW\nJoint Private View with Breathing with ‘Breaths – Air Bladders’\nEXHIBITION DATES: 31 October 2025 – 16 January 2026\nVENUE\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY\nOPENING HOURS:\nTue – Fri 10am – 5pm\n\nImage: “First Touch”\, Filomena Borecká\, ink and color pencils on paper (24 x 32 cm) Paris\, 2025 \nWhile exploring Silent Systems: Breathing Devices at Vitrínka Gallery\, you might also like to stop by the Czech Centre’s Bouda Gallery to see Filomena Borecká’s breathing sculpture.

SUMMARY:'Breathing' with 'Breaths - Air Bladders'
DESCRIPTION:Filomena Borecká’s captivating artwork Breaths – Air Bladders invites visitors to experience the shared act of breathing and reflect on our interconnection with the living world. \nSparked by the global awareness of breath during the COVID-19 pandemic\, and blending art\, science and sensorial experience\, the exhibition curated by Judith Rainhorn and Charles-Antoine Wanecq explores the cultural\, social\, and scientific histories of respiration from the 18th century to today. Drawing on the outcomes of two interdisciplinary workshops\, it brings together perspectives from historians\, scientists\, artists\, and healthcare professionals. Central to the exhibition is Borecká’s participatory sculpture Breaths – Air Bladders\,which transforms a fundamental act of life into a sensorial\, collective\, and thought-provoking experience. \nFilomena Borecká is an artist and researcher\, PhD (University Paris 1 Panthéon–Sorbonne\, 2023)\, and graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (2004)\, with an exchange at MFA Hunter College in New York. She works primarily in France but has also created in Prague and New York\, with each place leaving its imprint on her practice\, which unfolds in three parallel and interrelated threads: performance\, (sound) sculpture\, and drawing. Her drawings\, reminiscent of seismographs\, engage in a dialogue with their environment. Recent exhibitions include Maison française d’Oxford\, National Gallery Prague\, CACLB Luxembourg\, Círculo de Bellas Artes Madrid\, and Queens College Art Center New York. Borecká collaborates with the Chair in Health in Human and Social Sciences and with the ACTE Institute at Sorbonne University Paris 1. \nBreaths – Air Bladders\nFor several years\, Filomena Borecká has created artworks that invite connection and reflection on what sustains life: the invisible air. Breaths – Air Bladders\, co-created with set designer Bruno Dubois\, comes alive in the presence of viewers as air-filled forms expand and contract. The work draws on a childhood memory from Christmas Eve: while preparing carp\, Borecká recalls seeing two irregular air bladders — organs that help the fish float and\, in a child’s imagination\, embody its “soul.” This memory anchors an artwork that explores breath as both literal and metaphorical\, a vital rhythm binding us to each other and to the living world we share. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING\nFriday 31 October 2025\, 6 – 7.30 pm  \nFree entry\, REGISTER NOW\nJoint Private View with Silent Systems: Breathing Devices\nEXHIBITION DATES: 31 October 2025 – 16 January 2026\nVENUE\nBouda Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n132 Palace Gardens Terrace\, London W8 4RT\nOPENING HOURS:\nTue – Fri 10am – 5pm\n\nImage: ‘Breaths – Air Bladders’\, Filomena Borecká\, photo Bruno Dubois

What begins as a simple countryside outing descends into chaos\, exposing petty quarrels and the absurdities of everyday life in 1960s Czechoslovakia. Papoušek’s razor-sharp wit\, keen social observation\, and mastery of situational humour bring these unforgettable characters to life\, while the mischievous Forman twins add lively spontaneity. Brimming with iconic dialogue\, comedic brilliance\, and subtle satire\, the film remains a timeless portrait of family\, materialism\, and human folly.

Only one man\, Dr. Galén\, holds the cure— but he will release it only if the leaders renounce war. His ultimatum collides with a ruthless dictator preparing for invasion\,— a thinly veiled portrait of Hitler and Nazi Germany. Banned in Czechoslovakia after the 1938 Munich Agreement\, the film remains uncannily relevant today: a tense thought-provoking parable where deadly disease and the lust for power intertwine. A forgotten classic that resonates as urgently now as on the eve of World War II.

When Czech gunner Student is gravely injured during an attack on Nuremberg\, the crew confronts the human cost of war. Featuring authentic aerial footage and a haunting score\, including Ghost Riders in the Sky\, the film is both a thrilling and deeply personal portrayal of wartime aviation. SUMMARY:The Overcoat
DESCRIPTION:In the snowy streets of a festive town\, Akaki is a humble clerk who resists change\, clinging to his small routines and simple pleasures. He’s perfectly happy with his old coat\, despite its many patches\, but as Christmas approaches\, the coat has become too worn to keep him warm. When a tailor declares\, “There’s nothing left to stitch\,” Akaki must buy a new coat—a decision that will change his life. With the first snowfall\, Akaki’s new coat brings both joy and unexpected challenges\, leading him on an unforgettable journey. Through enchanting shadow puppetry and an original score\, The Overcoat becomes a visual treat for audiences\, capturing the warmth of the season and reminding us of the simple power of kindness. \nTold through a mixture of clowning\, shadow puppetry and storytelling this is a treat for all ages. \nWhat people are saying about The Overcoat. \nA visual delight…stunning.\nThe Arts blog \nThe two performers are excellent\, as is the storytelling….Beautifully imagined.\nEverything Theatre \nSo much fun! 10/10 definitely recommend\nAudience Review \nGreat story\, wonderful props and stunning imagery. The actors brought such joy to the piece. Could not fault it. We walked away with a collective glow in our hearts\nAudience Review

SUMMARY:John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture
DESCRIPTION:To coincide with the publication of his book\, John Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture\, Charles Saumarez Smith will give a lunchtime talk on Vanbrugh’s extraordinary life: his upbringing; why he spent so much time in a French gaol; the writing of The Relapse and The Provoked Wife; and how he came to design Castle Howard with no previous experience of architecture. Saumarez Smith will give particular attention to Vanbrugh’s work as a theatrical impresario and the designer of the Queen’s Theatre\, Haymarket\, so disastrous as a venue for plays\, but where all of Handel’s early operas were performed. He will then describe Vanbrugh’s quarrel with the Duchess of Marlborough and his later work as an architect\, at King’s Weston\, Claremont\, Grimsthorpe\, Seaton Delaval and Stowe. In recent years\, Vanbrugh’s reputation as an architect has been eclipsed by his subordinate\, Nicholas Hawksmoor. This talk and the accompanying book will explain Vanbrugh’s originality and influence on later architects from Robert Adam to Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. \nCharles Saumarez Smith is a writer\, curator and art historian. He has served as Director of the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery\, London\, as Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, as Professor of Architectural History at the Royal Academy of Arts\, and Chairman of The Royal Drawing School and The Watercolour World. He is currently a Trustee of the Garden Museum\, and Emeritus Trustee of ArtUK and Charleston. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase in the Foyer at a special price. \nFurther details of the book available here

SUMMARY:At the Edge of All Things
DESCRIPTION:At the Edge of All Things brings together three artists who conjure post-human landscapes in response to the uncertainties and frailties of contemporary life. The exhibition marks the start of a three-month series of events at a former warehouse in Borough as the building is prepared for its next chapter – the space itself a symbol of civic transition. \nAnna Woodward\, Annie Trevorah and Vilte Fuller provoke alternative futures in a world teetering on the brink of collapse. Examining the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world from cultural and historical\, theoretical and personal perspectives the artists’ works capture a liminal moment between utopia and dystopia. \nIn her intricate paintings Anna Woodward’s depicts fantastical scenarios where the organic and human-made collide\, Annie Trevorah’s hybrid sculptures blur the lines between plant life and technology\, while Vite Fuller’s otherworldly scenes draw on ancient folktales and urban myths. Together they join nature’s alarm call to step back from the edge. \nThis inaugural show launches a creative hub hosted by IAG (Independent Art Galleries and Exhibitions) led by curator Josephine May Bailey. Over the course of three months\, the temporarily vacant space will act as a platform for dialogue\, experimentation and exchange by incorporating exhibitions\, artist residencies and collaborative programming.

SUMMARY:Sail to Hope – Solo Exhibition by Esra Kizir Gokcen
DESCRIPTION:With Sail to Hope\, Esra Kizir Gokcen presents her response to the far-reaching effects of globalisation. Born from human empathy rather than political drive\, her work questions the hierarchies that place humans above other life forms. \nIn paintings inspired by Eastern miniature art\, natural forces intermingle with crowds of abstract shapes and figures to represent the movements of people and cultures between past and present. Collaged paper boats folded from world maps symbolise the shared humanity of precarious passages too often reduced to numbers in news headlines. \nThe ubiquitous origami vessels also feature in a large-scale multi-media installation at the heart of the exhibition. These were co-created in workshops with diverse community groups. Participants christened each boat with a personal message of hope\, inspiring the exhibition title. A soundscape by Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist Tim Garland complements this collaborative work. \nThe artists have worked together since 2023\, when Garland commissioned Gokcen to create paintings for his orchestral work. Visuals for the current Moment of Departure tour constitute part of this exhibition. Tim Garland will play a selection from his current CD in several intimate concerts on both Saturdays. The afternoon performances will be followed by a Q&A with both artists who believe art can communicate positive messages and elevate the resilience of the human spirit. A selection of prints and posters are available in support of War Child. \nThe exhibition open times are as follows: \nMonday-Friday 12noon – 7pm\nSaturday 11am – 2pm\nSunday 12non – 4pm \nClick on the booking links for the music and art afternoons on 1 March and 8 March
