DESCRIPTION:Will Marie from a small town in the Czech Republic succeed by fulfilling her lifetime dream to conquer New York as a still photographer? \n\nMarie Tomanová travelled from Mikulov to the USA as an au pair\, and today she shoots campaigns for fashion brands such as Nike\, Instagram\, or for the fashion magazines such as Vogue CS. However\, her name is better known abroad than in her native country\, which provided few opportunities for the young painter. Paradoxically\, it was only in New York\, far from home\, that she was able to grow up and find herself – a transition greatly supported by Marie’s partner in professional and personal life\, art historian Thomas Beachdel. Tomanová touches the world in a different way\, with a rush of positive emotions\, an immediate connection\, acting as a medium through which the energy of the portrait-sitter passes. Directed by fellow Czech expatriate Marie Dvořáková\, a Student Academy Award winner\, the film is both a tender portrait of friendship and a reflection on ambition\, identity\, and the search for home. Following its acclaimed debut in Nicosia\, this exhibition brings together the most extensive selection of Georghiou’s works ever shown abroad.  \nA central figure in Cypriot modern art\, Georghiou created powerful visual narratives depicting the island’s people\, landscapes\, traditions\, and defining historical moments. \nThe exhibition includes major works from the 1940s and 1950s\, sourced from public and private collections\, including pieces recently returned from Famagusta through the bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. Shown with their original titles\, these works offer fresh insight into the artist’s vision and emotional connection to Cyprus.  \nCurated by Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel and Katerina Stephanides\, the exhibition introduces UK audiences to the richness and significance of Georghiou’s artistic legacy.

DESCRIPTION:ITSLIQUID Group is pleased to present “…and we hired a bloke to fix the wall”\, a solo exhibition by Italian street artist Beast\, curated by Luca Curci\, on view in London from March 13 until 21 March 2026 at ELEMENTS Contemporary Art Space\, in London. \nThe exhibition brings together a selection of works from Beast’s most recent series\, exploring the relationship between memory\, history\, and the physical traces of time embedded in urban surfaces. Active since 2009\, Beast has realised over 200 urban installations across more than 40 cities in Europe\, the United States and Japan. His early practice focused on political and social themes\, often presented through satirical mash-ups of contemporary figures framed in gold and placed directly in public space. Over time\, his work expanded in scale\, moving towards large-format paste-ups and monumental interventions on abandoned buildings. \nThroughout this evolution\, the street has remained central to his practice\, conceived as an open and democratic space for artistic dialogue. In recent years\, Beast has turned his attention towards history and memory\, developing an ongoing body of work that places portraits of cultural figures on the walls of abandoned historical centres. These locations – often damaged\, neglected or left to decay – are not treated as neutral backdrops\, but as integral components of the work itself. \nThe series “…and we hired a bloke to fix the wall”\, which also gives its title to the exhibition\, presents portraits of influential figures from culture\, philosophy\, literature\, art and psychology. Among those featured are Carl Gustav Jung\, Philip Roth\, Jackson Pollock\, Albert Camus and Noam Chomsky. Rather than functioning as celebratory images\, these works present the subjects as enduring presences emerging from the material history of the places they inhabit. \nThe technique behind the works is central to their meaning. Each piece begins with the wall itself\, which is first photographed in detail. The texture of the surface—its cracks\, stains and signs of erosion – is digitally overlaid onto the portrait of the chosen subject. The resulting image is then printed and installed on the same wall\, aligning imperfections so that the figure appears to surface from within the architecture. Image and wall merge\, creating the impression that memory is embedded in the structure itself. The conceptual foundation of the series is inspired by a statement from historian Howard Zinn: “If you don’t know history\, it is as if you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday\, anybody up there in a position of power can tell you anything\, and you have no way of checking up on it.” \nFor Beast\, historical awareness represents a form of resistance against manipulation and collective amnesia. The title of the exhibition introduces a subtle but deliberate irony. “…and we hired a bloke to fix the wall” evokes the idea of a practical solution to decay\, suggesting that damage can simply be repaired or concealed. In contrast\, Beast exposes the wall rather than fixing it\, treating cracks and erosion as carriers of meaning rather than flaws to be corrected. Installed within the gallery space\, the works retain their connection to the street and to the abandoned environments from which they originate. Inspired by Antonin Artaud\, he aimed for the theatre\, but an encounter with The Doors stimulated him into music\, where he has examined and absorbed a wide range of expressions from the early blues\, especially Blind Lemon Jefferson\, or European medieval music\, to popular songs across the world.  In 1970\, he joined a group\, Lost Aaraaf\, named after Edgar Allan Poe’s poem\, as a vocalist. Meanwhile\, he started to work on home recordings and learned the guitar and percussion autodidactically. In 1978\, Haino formed a rock band Fushitsusha\, and since 1988\, after a recuperation period from 1983 to 1987\, he has been internationally active in various forms including solo\, groups such as Fushitsusha\, Nijiumu\, Aihiyo\, Vajra\, Sanhedrin\, Seijaku\, Nazoranai or The Hardy Rocks and DJ as “experimental mixture\,” as well as in collaboration with artists from different backgrounds\, drawing the performance of the guitar\, percussion\, hurdy gurdy\, string instruments\, wind instruments\, local instruments from across the world and DJ gears to the extreme through idiosyncratic techniques. Haino has released more than 200 recordings and performed live at least 2\,000 times. \nIn March 2026\, Japan\, Haino will present two exclusive performances in Europe on polygonola\, a metal-flat polygonal instrument\, based on the 2nd dimensional vibration theory\, built by Naoki Skura. DESCRIPTION:The Maydan Ensemble traverses international bounds and genres\, creating an inclusive and irresistible sound that blends modern jazz with Arabic\, Anatolian and Persian folk music.\nThe Maydan Ensemble of the North London Jazz Collective is a fully international quintet comprising some of London’s busiest jazz musicians: the rising-star vocalist Amena from Egypt\, acclaimed Irish-Iranian jazz guitarist Kourosh Kanani\, ⁠Italian-English bassist and stalwart of the London jazz scene Lorenzo Morabito\, Londoner Robbie Ellison on drums and one the finest Iranian folk musicians in London\, Parham Bahadoran on reeds (zurna\, duduk and clarinet). \n‘Maydan’ means ‘town square’ or ‘public meeting place’. Originating in Farsi\, the word is now used across Arabic\, Turkish\, Urdu\, Kurdish\, Georgian and Ukrainian.
