SUMMARY:Drury Lane – guided walk in London
DESCRIPTION:A guided walk larded with street theatre\, songs and pub stops\, exploring the rich history of one of London’s most colourful quarters. \nDrury Lane is a guided walking tour from Minimum Labyrinth. \nRobert Kingham (presenter of Pagan London) explores the rich cultural history of one of London’s most colourful\, creative and dangerous quarters. Squalor\, crime\, politics and plague provide the scenery for a teeming cast of rakes and poets\, actors and gamblers\, playwrights and pickpockets\, Freemasons and highwaymen\, engravers and compositors\, gunpowder plotters and pornographers\, butchers and beadles\, judges and jail-breakers\, suffragettes and whores\, in a story that stretches from Anglo-Saxon settlers on the shores of the Thames to the starched pomp of the British Empire. \nWe promise you a bawdy\, boozy bacchanal\, bursting with everything you have come to expect from master storytellers Minimum Labyrinth: obscure factlets\, dramatic sweeps of history\, dark mysteriousness\, musical protrusions and theatrical surprises. \nStarting locations vary due to opening times\, so we will email you two days before\, but it will always be in a pub or café near the north end of Drury Lane. We will make two further stops for a drink along the route\, and end at a fourth pub in the same area.

SUMMARY:Instant Expert: Wonders in Space
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of exploring the mysteries and marvels of the universe with six leading scientists. You will start where everything began\, at the Big Bang. Throughout the day\, you will hear about the formation of galaxies\, the latest research into our nearest star\, the Sun\, the mysterious physics of black holes\, the quest to find life on Mars and the discovery of habitable planets outside our solar system. \n\n\n\nThe day will be hosted by a New Scientist journalist and there will be plenty of time to ask your questions to our galaxy of space experts. \n\n\n\nTickets for our popular Instant Expert one-day masterclasses are strictly limited and usual sell out quickly\, so book now to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\nTopics covered will include: \n\n\n\n\nBig Bang\n\n\n\nBlack Holes\n\n\n\nFormation of Galaxies\n\n\n\nMars Exploration\n\n\n\nExoplanets\n\n\n\nThe Sun\n\n\n\n\nTalks and speakers:\n\n\n\nThe Big Bang and the Atomic Universe\n\n\n\nKatherine Blundell\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nThe Universe began 13.8 billion years ago with the Big Bang and has been expanding ever since. In this talk\, Katherine Blundell will explain the recent revolutions in our understanding of the ‘Early Universe’\, which refers to the first few seconds after the Big Bang. She will explain: \n\n\n\n+ How have these crucial moments determined our universe today+? What is meant by ‘the horizon problem’ and ‘the flatness problem’+? How can we investigate events that happened so long ago \n\n\n\nBlack Holes: the most fascinating objects in the universe\n\n\n\nChristopher Reynolds\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Cambridge\n\n\n\nBlack holes are some of the strangest and most fascinating objects in the Universe. A place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out sounds like something out of science fiction. But how do black holes form\, how many are in our galaxy and beyond\, and do new and future technologies such as gravitational wave detectors and next-generation X-ray telescopes change how we observe them? \n\n\n\nGalaxies: building blocks of the universe\n\n\n\nClaudia Maraston\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Portsmouth\n\n\n\nGalaxies are vast collections of stars\, gas\, and dust\, held together by gravity. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are scattered throughout the universe. They are the building blocks that chart the history of our universe\, but how they form and evolve remains a mysterious process. Join Claudia Maraston as she reveals how her research modelling the galaxies of our universe is expanding our knowledge of cosmology. \n\n\n\nLooking for life on Mars\n\n\n\nAndrew Coates\, Deputy Director (solar system)\, Mullard Space Science Laboratory\, University College London\n\n\n\nAre we alone in the Universe? With missions to Mars and outer planet moons\, we hope to find out. We live in an exciting time for Mars exploration. In this talk\, Andrew Coates will discuss why Mars is a key target for space exploration\, look at some of the early results from the 2021 missions for context\, and outline our hopes for PanCam and the Rosalind Franklin rover. \n\n\n\nThe Sun: Our nearest star\n\n\n\nSarah Matthews\, Professor of Solar Physics\, University College London\n\n\n\nWhat has our nearest star taught us about all the other stars in the universe? Data from missions such as Japan’s Hinode and ESA’s Solar Orbiter has revealed much about its magnetic field\, solar flares and its corona. Join Sarah Matthews\, a solar physicist at University College London as she shares her insights on the Sun’s activity\, structure and impact on Earth based on her work on these probes. \n\n\n\nExoplanets: Life beyond the solar system?\n\n\n\nChris Impey\, Astronomer\, University of Arizona\n\n\n\nSince the first exoplanet\, or a planet beyond our solar system\, was discovered in 1995\, over 4\,000 more have been pinpointed\, including hundreds of Earth-like planets\, many of them habitable\, detected by the Kepler satellite. Join Chris Impey for a state-of-the-art account of what’s behind this accelerating progress\, what’s next\, and what it might mean for humanity’s future. \n\n\n\nWho should attend? \n\n\n\nIs anyone interested in the mysteries and marvels of space\, whatever your age or background? Whether you’re a scientist\, a student or simply a fascinated human being\, Instant Expert: Wonders of Space offers the chance to learn directly from the experts at our one-day masterclass. \n\n\n\nBenefits of attending: \n\n\n\n\nBecome an expert in one day\n\n\n\nInformal set-up\, meet like-minded people\n\n\n\nOpen your mind\, be inspired\n\n\n\nA unique chance to ask your burning questions to our experts\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s included in your ticket: \n\n\n\n\nIn-depth and engaging talks from six leading scientists\n\n\n\nAsk-an-expert Wonders of Space Question Time session\n\n\n\nYour chance to meet our six speakers and New Scientist host\n\n\n\nBuffet lunch\, plus morning and afternoon refreshments\n\n\n\nExclusive Instant Expert certificate\n\n\n\nExclusive on-the-day New Scientist subscription deal\, book and merchandise offers

SUMMARY:Screaming Females + Sniffany and The Nits
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nSCREAMING FEMALES have now been a band for half the lifetime of its members. Formed in 2005 in New Brunswick\, NJ\, the trio has consistently created a hearty\, surprising mix of indie\, alt\, punk and stoner-rock\, all with their original line-up of Marissa Paternoster (guitar\, vocals)\, “King Mike” Mike Abbate (bass) and Jarrett Dougherty (drums). Released on February 17th by Don Giovanni Records\, the group’s new album ‘Desire Pathway’ was recorded at Minnesota’s Pachyderm Studios (where Nirvana recorded In Utero) and produced by Matt Bayles (Foxing\, Pearl Jam\, Mastodon\, et al.). Bright and full\, the album captures the band at a time when nothing was certain other than their abiding desire to make music together. \n\n\n\n‘Desire Pathway’ opens with the Sabbathy hypnotism of “Brass Bell.” Following a swelling haze of synth\, feedback shrieks\, martial snares advance\, and the band explodes into a bracing groove. Soon\, Paternoster makes the cryptic announcement: “I have flown us to the moon\,” and we’re off. The song has the effect of clearing one haze and replacing it with another\, much heavier one. “Beyond the Void” may gather gloomily\, but it quickly releases into its jangly\, memorable chorus. Single “Mourning Dove” successfully channels the Pixies into a tight\, driving power-pop song that passionately declares “My love for you is too strong to hide.” Now 18 years and eight albums in\, Screaming Females are still making their own path in the world\, still touring DIY and releasing music without compromise. The route might cut a little off the main road\, but you’ll quickly see there’s a reason they’re on it. You might like where it leads you.https://screamingfemales.com/ \n\n\n\nSNIFFANY AND THE NITS are a deranged\, genuinely troubling punk band from London featuring Joanna Gruesome\, Ex-Void and The Tubs members. The Unscratchable Itch is their debut album via PRAH Recordings. Sister Sniffany and her singular lyrical performance style elevate the band beyond the sum of their influences. Her lyrics touch on a world of hidden humiliations\, girl abjection\, crumpled lager cans\, clam chowder and lumpy\, over-stuffed dollies. The band veer between atonal no-wave guitar assault\, straight-up hardcore\, goth/anarcho or whatever takes their fancy while remaining identifiably Nit-like. Always grounded by a pounding\, pogo-ing rhythm section\, The Nits provide the perfect backdrop for Sister Sniffany’s wild\, relentless live performances.https://sniffanyandthenits.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nSCREAMING FEMALESSNIFFANY AND THE NITSWednesday 14 JuneOSLO\, 1a Amhurst Road\, Hackney Central\, London\, E8 1LL7.30pm | £15 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/ld532d69ac2a

SUMMARY:Reflections
DESCRIPTION:With Reflections\, Olga Karlovac presents a visual journal of her inner world as a series of experimental self-portraits alongside timeless and nameless landscapes. \n\n\n\nKarlovac’s work occupies a space between figuration and abstraction\, shadow and light\, recollection and the here and now. Using her camera as a painterly tool to create an atmospheric and grainy aesthetic\, her intentionally blurred contemplations intuitively convey fluidity and emotion. Not intending to chronicle a specific circumstance or situation\, the artist evokes memories and moods that are at once intimate and universal. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition concludes a transition period that spanned six years and three books. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition runs from 12-18 June 2023\, open daily 12noon – 6 pm \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Wednesday 14 June\, 6-9 pm

SUMMARY:Supporting LGBTQIA+ refugees at Pride and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:LGBTQIA+ people and their rights are not safe around the world. Sixty-seven countries still criminalise same-sex partnerships and LGBTQIA+ people. Eleven countries can or do impose the death penalty for same-sex intimacy.* \n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers are one of the most vulnerable refugee communities. They face higher risks of homo- and trans-phobic violence from both their host country and other displaced people\, isolation from traditional support networks and challenges in receiving suitable housing\, healthcare and other support services. \n\n\n\nWithin the UK\, the hostile environment and xenophobic attitudes exacerbate the issues queer refugees and asylum seekers face – with reports of individuals having to “prove” their sexuality within a hostile legal system and facing violence and abuse within immigration detention. And this is without considering the recent impacts of the new Nationality and Borders Bill passed in 2022. \n\n\n\nWe believe everyone has the right to safety and to love freely. That’s why this Pride Month and Refugee Week\, TEDxLondon and The Conduit are coming together to shine a light on the challenges queer refugees face\, why we must support LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers better and how we can do this. \n\n\n\nWith our expert speakers\, you’ll learn more about this pressing issue and how you can take part in supporting queer refugees everywhere. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nNancy Kelley\, CEO of Stonewall\n\n\n\nMoud Goba\, Manager at Micro Rainbow and Chair of Trustees at Black Pride UK\n\n\n\n\nChair: \n\n\n\n\nReeta Loi\, they are a poet\, singer and music artist and also the CEO of Gaysians.\n\n\n\n\n*Source: Human Dignity Trust \n\n\n\nA cash bar will be available. Living in a generation that navigates mental illness through TikTok trends\, Kit is THE main character and sitting down with her demons has never been cuter. If she doesn’t laugh\, she’ll cry (and probably take a picture of it).

SUMMARY:LGBT Comedy - DICK DENHAM - Big Dick Energy
DESCRIPTION:Comedy Bloomers is delighted to be launching The London LGBTQ+ Stand-up\n\n\n\nComedy festival from 17th May – 11th June with 10 fantastic nights of comedy.\n\n\n\nFriday 9th June 9pm DICK DENHAM WIP 2Northdown\n\n\n\n\nDick Denham is a non-binary thirtysomething comedian. A hit with queer and straight crowds alike\, Dick has audiences in stitches with their surreal observations on being genderqueer in a heteronormative world\, and the aspects of British culture that we all love to be indifferent about normally.\n  \nIn their debut show Big Dick Energy\, Dick takes the banality of everyday life and cleverly – and queerly – subverts it: you’ll never experience a branch of Holland & Barrett\, a leisure centre café\, or a commercial for the People’s Postcode Lottery in the same way again!. \n\n \nFollowing their debut at Leicester Comedy Festival\, Dick will be further finessing the show in this work-in-progress performance\, ahead of taking it to the Camden and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals in August”\n  \nDick was a runner-up in the Comedy Bloomers LGBTQ+ New Act Competition 2022\, and a semi-finalist in Sketch Off! 2023. \n“Wonderful” – Jordan Gray \n“A joy to watch!” – Stephen Bailey \n“Really fun!” – Zoe Lyon \n\n

SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: Brotherhood
DESCRIPTION:Critically acclaimed documentary about three young Bosnian brothers from director Francesco Montagner. \nJabir\, Usama and Useir are three young Bosnian brothers born into a family of shepherds. They grew up in the shadow of their father\, Ibrahim\, a strict\, radical Islamist preacher. When Ibrahim gets sentenced to two years in prison for war participation and terrorism\, the three brothers are suddenly left on their own. Beginning to question their father’s teaching\, they explore their newly acquired freedom. Growing up has never felt more intimate or exhausting as they struggle\, fight\, and face each other\, their distinct identities developing in front of our eyes. \nThis deserved winner of the 2021 Locarno International Film Festival by Czech-based Italian director Francesco Montagner is an intimate and universal tale about youth\, manhood\, the search for identity and the need to deal with the uncomfortable presence of a strict father. \nFrancesco Montagner\, Czech Republic\, Italy 2021\, 97’\, English subtitles \nAdmission £5 \nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:SMALL WORLDS - TOM DE FRESTON
DESCRIPTION:No 20 Arts is delighted to present SMALL WORLDS\, the inaugural exhibition of Tom de Freston’s drawings. Long an admirer of Maurice Sendak\, Jon Klassen\, and Leonora Carrington\, and having built a career around the construction of multimedia worlds\, it is little wonder that de Freston has turned his hand to illustration in the past five years. From jointly creating stories around miraculous animals with his wife\, novelist Kiran Millwood Hargrave\, to being selected to make work for the first illustrated edition of David Almond’s iconic Skellig\, he has brought his full range of process to paper. Monoprinting\, collaging\, maquettes\, and painting combined with interplays of scale and texture give each finished work depth and intrigue. His fierce belief in an image’s ability to communicate complex narrative is on full display here\, made no less complex by the size\, simplicity of line\, and colour palette.
