SUMMARY:House of All + David Lance Callahan
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nHOUSE OF ALL is a Fall Family Continuum. Last Summer\, five key members of The Fall got back together to record an album: Martin Bramah\, Steve Hanley\, Paul Hanley\, Simon Wolstencroft and Pete Greenway. This project has been dubbed: HOUSE OF ALL. Recorded over three days during the Solstice\, the session was a great success\, and the resulting self-titled debut album will be coming out in May 2023. Martin Bramah\, The Fall’s singer until Mark E Smith’s lesser guitar skills caused them to swap places\, was possibly the last true equal to Smith in the group and the longest survivor of the original line-up. Yet while The Fall was later famous for their legendary productivity\, Bramah often went great periods between releases\, releasing fewer albums in thirty-five years (under any guise) than he has in the last seven with Blue Orchids – who already have a fantastic new album in the can. Bramah has joined forces with four other mighty Fall alumni: Steve Hanley\, The Fall’s longest-serving bassist\, as well as his brother Paul Hanley\, who drummed on what may be the best run of Fall records\, from “Grotesque” to “Bend Sinister”. The three have also played together as Factory Star for a brief period. Joining them are two surprise members – drummer Simon Wolstencroft\, who joined the Fall around the time Paul left\, and more surprisingly\, guitarist Pete Greenway\, The Fall’s long-serving and final guitarist who has\, to our knowledge\, never played with the other four before. \nAnd the album? Recorded in a burst of intense creativity\, we won’t tempt you to propagandise you\, the album speaks for itself\, but it wouldn’t be a false boast to say that it stands with much of the best Fall or Blue Orchids music\, displaying an energy and psychic impulse all its own\, each member playing as sharply and with as much drive as ever\, around manic motorik grooves and a shocking lack of ‘compromise’. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/fallfamilycontinuum \nDAVID LANCE CALLAHAN has\, after a string of fine albums with those C86 indie-pop pioneers The Wolfhounds\, an enticing run on the Too Pure label in the experimentalist band Moonshake\, as well as collaborations with PJ Harvey and members of Stereolab\, now begun his solo career in earnest\, releasing a pair of daring albums with a mélange of what’s been called “mutant Eastern\, West African\, folk\, blues and post-punk influences. \nhttps://davidlancecallahan.bandcamp.com/ \nHOUSE OF ALLDAVID LANCE CALLAHANThursday 18 MayThe Garage\, 20-22 Highbury Corner\, London\, N5 1RD7.30pm | £17 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/lc724814be5a \n

SUMMARY:Dr Amir Khan: Doctor in the House
DESCRIPTION:Dr Amir Khan\, everyone’s favourite family doctor\, has announced his first-ever live dates starting on 18th May at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre. \n\n\n\nThe ‘Doctor In The House’ tour promises a fascinating\, heart-warming and frequently hilarious evening\, where Dr Amir will share stories about growing up in his British Asian family with six sisters\, ruled by Mama Khan. He will also talk about his life as a general practitioner with emotional and downright stories of patient encounters from the heartwarming to the bizarre\, painting a profoundly revealing portrait of healthcare in twenty-first-century Britain.  Years of underfunding and lack of staff have brought the NHS to a crisis point\, and Dr Amir will argue why it should be saved before it’s too late. \n\n\n\nHe will also detail his journey to becoming a doctor\, something he never wanted to do\, preferring to become a vet. But how many Asian vets do you see? None right. And how many Asian doctors do you see? Bloody loads. Influenced by his mother\, Amir applied to study medicine\, and the rest\, as they say\, is history… \n\n\n\nFinally\, Dr Amir will bring the doctor’s surgery to you\, taking questions from the audience and tackling seemingly personal and often challenging subjects in a relaxed and practical manner\, offering advice – from sleeping issues and headaches to joint pain and heart palpitations. This promises to be an entertaining\, informative\, and liberating evening with Dr Amir as he reminds us just how unique the NHS is. \n\n\n\n“I can’t wait to see you on my first U.K. tour. Putting this show together has been so much fun… there are many laughs and passionate support for our beloved NHS\, and you get to put your medical questions to me. But please don’t tell Mama Khan about it….” \n\n\n\n DR AMIR 2023

SUMMARY:Will Todd - Mass in Blue (20th anniversary performance) & Anton Bruckner - Mass in E Minor
DESCRIPTION:It is twenty-one years since David Temple MBE and Hertfordshire Chorus commissioned Will Todd to write a jazz-style mass and twenty years since the first performance of Jazz Mass\, later renamed Mass in Blue. With its upbeat jazz setting of the Latin mass\, it became one of the most successful commissions in modern choral music. Mass in Blue has been sung by hundreds of choirs worldwide\, often accompanied by Will and his band. \n\n\n\nTo celebrate the twentieth anniversary\, we are reuniting with Will on piano\, accompanied by his ensemble and soprano soloist. A party not to be missed! \n\n\n\nWe pair this with Bruckner’s ground-breaking Mass in E Minor. Unlike any other 19th-century liturgical music\, it was written solely for wind band and eight-part choir. It combines the devout simplicity of expression of Italian Renaissance polyphony with Bruckner’s expressive harmonies\, using powerful combinations and contrasts of vocal and instrumental texture to create one of his finest works.

SUMMARY:Urban Village Fete - London’s Free Festival
DESCRIPTION:London’s Favourite Free Festival is back at Greenwich Peninsula\, with a line-up to entice the whole family. \n\n\n\nThe Urban Village Fete returns to Greenwich Peninsula for its 7th year with a cracking line-up of entertainment\, DJs\, workshops\, and talks – all for free! \n\n\n\nAlongside a packed programme of free entertainment throughout the day\, there’s a star-studded line-up of DJs keeping the party going\, with headline sets from Bradley Zero and other special guests taking over Central Park. After dark\, party-goers can head to Canteen for more drinks and dance on a heated indoor terrace. \n\n\n\nKicking off at 11 am\, there will be live performances\, arts and crafts\, food\, markets\, music and more\, with something for everyone to enjoy and get involved with throughout the day. Hosted in the heart of Greenwich Peninsula\, a riverside neighbourhood with art and culture embedded in its fabric\, the event attracts thousands of people from all over London for a free day out like no other in the capital.  \n\n\n\nDesign District will once again host Robert Elms in the Talks Tent to lead insightful conversations and spark debate across a range of topics from Sports to Sustainability. For those wanting to fill their bellies and brains\, Canteen Food Hall offers an eclectic mix of street food from 6 different vendors\, freshly shaken cocktails\, cold beer and plenty of fizzes to quench the thirst. The food quarter at the Fete extends beyond Canteen\, through the Bureau restaurant\, and along the park\, where hungry visitors can feast on homemade and locally sourced goodies from the likes of Cakehole and Pasta e Basta. \n\n\n\nFor those wanting to get their hands dirty\, this year’s programme of interactive workshops will not disappoint. We had the simple premise of supersizing the concept of a much-loved village fete and placing all its parts\, from creative workshops to the music to the myriad of participatory activities\, the bars and street food\, all in the hands of the capital’s most creative practitioners. This year’s line-up is as good as you would get at many big ticket-priced events\, and it’s FREE and open to everyone. SUMMARY:The Trial: Prague 1952 + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In Prague in 2018\, workers find in an abandoned warehouse film reels that had been hidden there since the fall of the Berlin Wall. These are the images of the Slánský Trial\, which in 1952 was a summit of Stalinist terror and anti-Semitism: a macabre production in which 14 top leaders of the Communist regime\, most of them Jews\, were accused of imaginary crimes and forced\, through torture and threats\, to make a public confession of their guilt\, which was also imaginary. 11 of them were sentenced to death and hanged. \n\n\n\nWith the help of these recently restored exceptional archives and a dive into the archives of the secret police\, Ruth Zylberman went to meet these broken families in order to retrace the complex trajectory of three of these men\, Rudolf Slánský\, Artur London and Rudolf Margolius. Three communists\, three men destroyed by a world they had helped to build and where the lie that became the law managed to subvert\, beyond the political field\, the most elementary bonds of human society right down to its most intimate entrenchments. \n\n\n\nRuth Zylberman is a filmmaker and author. Amongst her latest films are Le dernier été (France Télévisions\, Zadig Productions\, 2019\, 60’)\, Les Enfants du 209 rue Saint-Maur\, Paris Xe (2017\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 110’)\, Maurice Nadeau. Le chemin de la vie (2011\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 52’)\, Dissidents\, les Artisans de la Liberté (2009\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 100’). She is also the author of La direction de l’Absent\, (Christian Bourgois\, 2015) and the narrative 209 rue Saint-Maur\, Paris Xe\, Autobiography d’un immeuble (Le Seuil/Arte Editions\, 2020). \n\n\n\nIvan Margolius\, son of Rudolf Margolius who was sentenced to death during the political trials in 1952\, is an author whose work includes memoirs and a number of books and articles on art\, architecture\, engineering\, design and automobile history. He was born in Prague\, Czechoslovakia and studied architecture both there and in London following his arrival in the UK in 1966. He has worked for Foster and Partners\, Skidmore\, Owings and Merrill and Yorke Rosenberg Mardall.

SUMMARY:Sound Bath at IMT Gallery: Free event for Tower Hamlets residents
DESCRIPTION:Come\, relax and unwind with a restorative sound bath in the unique and beautiful setting of IMT Gallery’s new exhibition\, Light the lamp rarely\, let the shadow come\, a solo presentation of meditative paintings by Emma Tod. \n\n\n\nSound Therapist Carlo Volpi will lead participants on a sonic journey using gongs and bowls\, bringing the mind and body deep into restorative relaxation. We encourage participants to sit or lie down comfortably and simply let the sound of the instruments wash over them. \n\n\n\nSound baths bring great benefits similar to those in meditation\, as they reduce stress\, muscle tension and physical pain whilst promoting a positive\, calm and focused state of mind. \n\n\n\nCarlo Volpi is a fully qualified\, sound and biodynamic massage therapist with over 20 years of experience in meditation. He is also a designer and lecturer on the MA in Fashion at the Royal College of Art. Carlo’s practice is focused on bringing the gong into a contemporary art and fashion context. We will be exploring combining these elements throughout this year\, with sound baths taking place during each of the gallery’s exhibitions and enhanced sound bath experiences incorporating drawing\, knitting and shamanic practices. \n\n\n\nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Carlo’s sound baths\, as told by previous participants: \n\n\n\n“Carlo created the perfect sanctuary to recharge from busy life in London. I felt immediately at ease\, and Carlo supplied as much information as I required about the process\, instruments and what to expect. Although I am a regular sound therapist\, it was my first experience with the sessions being largely focused on gongs as the main instrument. The experience was truly incredible. The physical and mental sensations were very different each time\, and I relaxed into the sound very quickly in every session. I left feeling calmer yet invigorated\, peaceful but energised…nicely balanced.” \n\n\n\n“I really enjoyed the lower tones and vibrations; so deep I envisaged treacle flowing and bubbling\, was amazing!” \n\n\n\n“I thought it was lovely !!! I was in a deep state for 45 mins and felt unconscious!! I will definitely be signing up for future sessions!” \n\n\n\nEmma Tod’s paintings in Light the lamp rarely let the shadow come to explore the remediation of paint in a period of digital image circulation\, with its accelerating speeds of transmission and shared attention deficit. Works negotiate this shift through stillness and ambiguity. Peripheral events\, fleeting moments and chance encounters are brought to the centre creating new imaginary territories. Visual fragments taken from the internet\, TV\, and art history are playfully recombined and erased. Zones of exclusion are brought to the fore\, challenging the primacy of the centre over the periphery. Exclusion matters. \n\n\n\nBring something to lie on\, such as a yoga mat or blanket\, and something warm to wear\, such as a jumper or blanket. \n\n\n\nPlease note: If you suffer from tinnitus or epilepsy or are in the first trimester of pregnancy\, it isn’t advisable to attend the session. \n\n\n\nPlaces are very limited\, so book now to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\n🎟️ Tickets are available now on https://imagemusictext.eventbrite.com/ \n\n\n\nThis event has been lovingly created with support from Clarion Futures.
