SUMMARY:Berliner Barock Solisten and Alexandros Kapelis at the Barbican
DESCRIPTION:The Berliner Barock Solisten and pianist Alexandros Kapelis come together for Bach’s six concertos for solo keyboard and orchestra: a tour-de-force not seen on the concert stage in recent memory. \n\n\n\n\nComprised of virtuosic soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Berliner Barock Solisten has created a unique approach to performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Tonight they’re joined by pianist Alexandros Kapelis for his Barbican debut\, giving us a rare opportunity to hear these Bach masterpieces in one go. \nA pianist who ‘plays the classics with astonishing taste’ (Martha Argerich\, Classica Magazine)\, Kapelis is the first in 17 years to record this set. Alongside the Berliner Barock Solisten\, in all their ‘precise\, polished perfection’ (Gramophone)\, we’ll hear Bach’s landmark concertos in full colour.

SUMMARY:Gilbert and Sullivan's Princess Ida
DESCRIPTION:Another unlikely G&S scenario where the son and daughter of 2 rival monarchs are betrothed at birth\, but now the time for their wedding is at hand\, the Princess has renounced mankind and set up a university for women from which all men are banned! \n\n\n\nHowever\, much posing and threats of all-out war between the adjoining nations are settled by a very short skirmish between the sons of the monarchs (conveniently\, they have 3 each). The wedding then takes place\, and all look forward to a happy future. It takes a larger-than-usual cast and 3 acts to come to this satisfactory conclusion! \n\n\n\nPerformed by the Ferrier Operatic Society\, this hilarious operetta is full of great music and fun action.

SUMMARY:Towards a Cosmotechnic Psychedelia: film screenings and panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:Towards a Cosmotechnic Psychedelia is an event presented by arebyte in collaboration with artist and researcher Helen Knowles. The event comprises screenings of films by artists and a panel discussion that seeks to explore various topics described in Yuk Hui’s ‘Cosmo technics’\, from alternate states and entity encounters to ethical\, moral\, and social influences. These factors continue to shape the use of psychedelics and plant-based medicinal tools by communities in the Global South\, like Putumayo in Colombia\, and in affluent Western societies. \n\n\n\nThe event is part of Helen’s current PhD research\, titled “More Than Human Healthcare”\, which involves collaborations with the Psychedelic Trials Team at King’s College London\, the London AI Centre\, and members of the Inga community in Putumayo\, Colombia. \n\n\n\nThis event looks beyond the West to move towards anti-universalist and pluralist perspectives on technologies and tools of connection. It aims to explore how artistic interventions and methods of narrative-building can assist us in creating collective awareness and connection in the contemporary context of the climate emergency\, as well as questioning how we cement solidarity without extractive or hierarchical agendas. \n\n\n\nThe event will begin with the screening of the experimental documentary film True Hallucinations\, directed by Péter Bergmann and based on Terence McKenna’s book Journey to La Chorerra. The film details his brother’s journey to Putumayo and the experiments that ensued\, blending 90s computational aesthetics with found footage of McKenna and his brother\, alongside McKenna’s famously hypnotic oration. This complex historical work forms the basis for understanding the problematic\, extractive\, Western-centric botanical objective to discover and sail the psychoanalytical seas of inner consciousness. \n\n\n\nFrom here\, we see more contemporary takes on the points raised (or ignored) in McKenna’s lifework: Ursula Biemann’s exploration of intelligence in nature from both shamanic and scientific perspectives and Patricia Dominguez’s enquiry into experimental ethnobotany and organic connection technologies that expand the perception of the vegetal and the spiritual world. Looking towards an embodied approach of psychedelics in medicine and mental health\, Andrea Khora visualises the effects of 10mg of ketamine inserted intravenously\, creating hallucinogenic and otherworldly images. Suzanne Triester approaches non-colonialist plans towards a techno-spiritual imaginary of alternative visions of survival on earth via a body of work titled TECHNOSHAMANISM. This sees an expansion and redefinition of technology that is engineered and redirected in new ways for positive global futures away from mainstream economic\, corporate and governmental forces. Rebeca Romero’s Voyager also questions the legitimacy of the notion of “discovery” and proposes a reassessment of dominant notions of intelligence\, technology\, and knowledge. \n\n\n\nPanellists include artist Helen Knowles\, Clinical Trials Manager at King’s College\, London\, Catherine Bird\, and artist Andrea Khora\, with contributions from Dr Hernando Chindoy Chindoy\, former Inga Community Leader\, Legal Representative of the Territorial Entity of the Inga Awai Population ATUN WASI IUIAI (AWAI)\, and co-founder of the AWAI Indigenous University. \n\n\n\nEvent Programme \n\n\n\n1.00 – 3.50 pm: Film screening \n\n\n\nPéter Bergmann\, Terence McKenna’s True Hallucinations – 2h 48’ \n\n\n\nYou can also watch the film here at home ahead of the panel conversation \n\n\n\n1.00 – 3.50 pm: Film screenings\, on loop \n\n\n\nAndrea Khora\, Bolus – 4’31” \n\n\n\nPatricia Domínguez\, Matrix Vegetal – 21’ \n\n\n\nRebeca Romero\, Voyager – 5’45” \n\n\n\nSuzanne Treister\, Technoshamanic Systems – 3’26” \n\n\n\nUrsula Biemann\, Forest Mind – 31’ \n\n\n\n4.00 – 5.30pm: panel talk \n\n\n\nHelen Knowles\, artist and researcher \n\n\n\nCatherine Bird\, Clinical Trials Manager \n\n\n\nAndrea Khora\, artist \n\n\n\nWith contributions from Dr Hernando Chindoy Chindoy\, former Inga Community Leader \n\n\n\nBiography of the speakers \n\n\n\nHelen Knowles (b.1975) is an artist and curator of the Birth Rites Collection. Her practice seeks to comprehend the malleability of reality on personal and societal scales. As a PhD researcher in the Art Department at Goldsmiths\, her practice-led project New Sight: The Alchemy of Surveillance into Resistance in Near Future Worlds\, looks at the history of surveillance\, specifically focusing on the mining of occult knowledge systems by the CIA in the cold war as well as the correlation between the 1960s-1970s utopian countercultures and the rise of Surveillance Capitalism. Through the uncovering of systems and correlations\, she is creating a speculative proposition for the future reclamation of personal and community agency through the creation of sculpture\, writing\, and performance.

SUMMARY:Fireworks
DESCRIPTION:A night of virtuosic fireworks from different musical and cultural traditions. The sounds of the far East in Dai Fujikura’s Shamisen Concerto are tempered by “a cadenza-like solo of dizzying rapidity that evokes prog-rock guitar as much as Paganini” (New York Times)\, while Tania León’s Rítmicas is based on “a rainbow of polyrhythmic inventions emerging from the Son and Guaguancó clave” of Cuba. The micropolyphonic textures of the oldest piece in tonight’s programme\, György Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto\, still sound as new as at its premiere in 1970. \n\n\n\nAugusta Read Thomas  new work (UK Premiere)Dai Fujikura  Shamisen Concerto (UK Premiere)Tania León  RítmicasGyörgy Ligeti  Chamber Concerto \n\n\n\nHidejiro Honjoh  shamisenVimbayi Kaziboni  conductorLondon Sinfonietta

SUMMARY:YiCrafts & Friends - Cultural Style Week Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:Join YiCrafts and friends for an evening of East Asian culture\, music and fashion from China’s minority ethnicities to celebrate Cultural Style Week! \nIn the last decade\, China has burst onto the global stage; China’s economy\, culture and politics have become a part of everyday news and international events. However\, the monolithic images of China conjured by the world’s media hide the incredible diversity of a country with 55 indigenous ethnic minorities\, each with unique and colourful cultures\, crafts\, and traditions. \nIntercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives\, and handcrafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing. Yi Crafts brings authentic experiences of China’s ethnic minority crafts and traditions to London\, making them accessible to everyone. \nThe YiCrafts Chinese ethnic minority fashion showcase will focus on traditional wear and handcrafts from Southwestern China’s beautiful ethnic minorities. Our 12 looks include daily wear to wedding wear with exquisite hand embroideries and textiles. Most outfits take more than two years to make from weaving\, dyeing and embroidery\, all done by hand. We want to share these valuable but vanishing traditional costumes and handcrafts with you and celebrate their cultures during the Cultural Festival Week to help preserve them. The fashion showcase will include fashion from: \n\nBouyei ethnic minority\nLahu ethnic minority\nBai Ku Yao ethnic minority\nMiao/Hmong ethnic minority\nDong ethnic minority\nLiangshan Yi ethnic minority\nBai ethnic minority\nDiao Cao Cun Yi ethnic minority\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuzheng (traditional Chinese Instrument) performance by Mengna Li. \nMengna graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in China and has performed in front of senior government officials in numerous locations worldwide. Her performance will include beautiful Spring River Flower Moon Night and Mountain Stream renditions. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraditional Miao ethnic minority dance called Gold Pheasant by Hongqiuye Wei and Rong Zhao. \nHongqiuye Wei is a Chinese dance artist originally from southern China’s Bouyei minority ethnicity\, and Zhao Rong is a Chinese dance artist from Xi’an\, China. Hong specializes in folk dance\, which explores movement through her identity interconnected with multiple folk-dance traditions. Zhao Rong specialises in Chinese classical and contemporary dance\, and she explores the art of cross-cultural dance through her practical experience. Together they will perform the traditional Miao ethnic minority dance called Gold Pheasant. \n  \nContemporary dance performance by Yu-Chien Cheng inspired by Bai ethnic group‘s traditional Indigo stitch resist dyeing handcrafts \nBorn and raised in Taiwan\, Yu-Chien Cheng is a freelance contemporary dance artist in London\, UK. Yu-Chien started her dance training in Ballet\, contemporary\, and Chinese dance. She continues her training by joining VERVE 22\, where she performs works by Akram Khan\, Sita Ostheimer\, and Alesandra Seutin. The three pieces are toured nationally within the UK\, including The Place (London)\, Dance House (Cardiff)\, Dance City (Newcastle)\, and Riley Theatre (Leeds). \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCultural Style Week \nEstablished in May 2022\, The London-birthed Cultural Style Week movement is a visual celebration of cultural diversity. From 21-27 May\, Cultural Style Week encourages people from all walks of life to celebrate and wear their heritage! Our in-person events combine fashion\, culture\, education and arts\, and this event ticks all boxes! \n‘YiCrafts & Friends’ is an official Cultural Style Week fashion event hosted by Nayha\, and limited tickets are available. \nFor our inaugural launch event\, the YiCrafts fashion segment included stunning pieces from China’s minority ethnicities with educational narrations. SUMMARY:Kateřina Tučková: The Last Goddess
DESCRIPTION:Kateřina Tučková\, leading Czech writer and 2022 winner of The State Award for Literature\, discusses with scholar Dr Rajendra Chitnis The Last Goddess\, her award-winning novel and most successful book to date with more than 100\,000 copies sold in the Czech Republic alone\, which has finally been published in English. Based on extensive historical research and powerful storytelling\, the novel traces a community of ‘goddesses‘\, female healers in the White Carpathians\, pursued by both Nazis and Communists. Masterfully weaving together fact\, folklore\, and fiction and oscillating between past and present while exploring the extraordinary history of goddesses\, Tučková incisively and with great panache comments on Czech society throughout the 20th century.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA book launch and conversation with Katerina Tučková and Dr Rajendra Chitnis\n\nKateřina Tučková is a leading Czech writer\, playwright\, art historian and curator. She has written four books published in twenty two languages. More than 300\,000 copies of her books have been sold in the Czech Republic alone. Her novel Gerta / Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch  won the Magnesia Litera Readers’ award and was shortlisted for the Jiří Orten Prize and the Josef Škvorecký Prize in 2010. The Last Goddess / Žítkovské bohyně won the Josef Škvorecký Award and the Czech Bestseller Prize in 2012 and the Magnesia Litera Readers‘ Award and the Czech Book Prize Readers‘ Award in 2013. In 2017\, she was given the Freedom\, Democracy and Human Rights Award by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and received the Premio Salerno Libro d’Europa. In 2022 Katerina Tučkova was awarded The State Prize for Literature for the novel Bílá Voda (The White Water). www.katerina-tuckova.cz\n\nRajendra Chitnis is associate professor of Czech at the University of Oxford. Alongside the books Literature in Post-Communist Russia and Eastern Europe\, Vladislav Vančura: The Heart of the Czech Avant-garde and the edited volume Translating the Literatures of Small European Nations\, he has published numerous studies about twentieth- and twenty-first-century Czech literature and contributed afterwords to English translations of novels by Antonín Bajaja\, Jaroslav Durych\, Viktor Dyk\, Ladislav Fuks\, Daniela Hodrová\, Josef Jedlička and others.\n\nKateřina Tučková: The Last Goddess\nTranslated by Andrew Oakland\nPublished by Amazon Crossing\, 2022\nThe book has been adapted for the stage by the Zlín City Theatre\, the Brno City Theatre\, and the Divadlo pod Palmovkou Theatre\nTranslated into twenty languages\n\nOnce upon a time\, a group of women with extraordinary abilities lived high in the hills of the White Carpathians. They knew how to heal people and help them in misery\, they knew how to cope with trouble\, and they could see the future. The so-called Žítková goddesses passed down their abilities from generation to generation. Dora Idesová is the last member of their family. She did not learn their art\, but studied ethnography and decided to write an extensive scientific study about them. In the late 1990s\, she discovered an operative file on an “internal enemy of the state” – her aunt\, goddess Surmena. The file was created by the StB (the State Security)\, and kept in the archives of the Ministry of the Interior. Dora discovers the fate of the women from the village of Žítková and is surprised to find out that although she did not become a goddess herself\, she is also an integral part of the secret traditions.

SUMMARY:Vortex Temporum: Daniel Pioro\, Michael Morpurgo & London Sinfonietta
DESCRIPTION:This concert focuses on our perceptions of time\, through two very different yet complementary masterpieces. The London Sinfonietta and Daniel Pioro will perform Gérard Grisey’s Vortex Temporum\, a work that takes us through three time frames: ‘normal’\, human time\, the ‘expanded’ time of whales and the ‘compressed’ time of birds\, via this pioneering spectralist composer’s virtuoso imagination. This late masterwork fulfilled Grisey’s vision of a music that transfigures our experience of time. On a symphonic scale\, revealing dizzying dances and lavish harmonic language\, the music carries us on a journey through boundary-breaking sound-worlds. \nAntonio Vivaldi  The Four Seasons\nGérard Grisey  Vortex temporum \nDaniel Pioro  violin\nGeoffrey Paterson  conductor\nSir Michael Morpurgo  narrator\nLondon Sinfonietta
