SUMMARY:MOHAMMAD SYFKHAN + GOBLIN BAND
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents…\nMOHAMMAD SYFKHAN\nGOBLIN BAND\nThursday 23 May\nSt Pancras Old Church\, Pancras Road\, King’s Cross\, NW1 1UL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/y06425199b5b\nMOHAMMAD SYFKHAN is an Irish based Kurdish/Syrian singer and Bouzouki player. Mohammad’s own brand of ecstatic music takes elements from Middle Eastern and North African music to create an atmosphere of joy\, love and happiness. Since arriving in Ireland\, Mohammad has used the language of music to integrate into the local community by playing at private parties and concerts. He has been playing music since the 1980’s\, while living in the city of Raqqa\, Syria  where he began working as a professional singer and started his own band\, The Al-Rabie Band which played concerts\, parties\, weddings and festivals all over Syria. His debut album ‘I Am Kurdish’ came out on Nyahh Records in February.\nhttps://nyahhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mohammad-syfkhan-i-am-kurdish \n“Syfkhan takes his domestic influences and fuses them with music from beyond those regions\, from North African folk rhythms to Turkish psychedelia. It’s a glorious alembic not bound by borders\, where Mohammad himself brings a cultivated exuberance to his playing that belies his vintage.” The Quietus \n“I Am Kurdish includes luscious covers of 1970s Turkish hit Leylim Ley\, Baligh Hamdim’s A Thousand and One Nights and Kurdish songwriter Mihemed Elî Şakir’s gorgeous Put a Coffee in a Glass. The title track\, an original with Syfkhan’s deep\, husky voice in full flow\, is also a highlight.” The Guardian \nGOBLIN BAND\, formed organically from intimate sessions of the same name\, ran out of the Hobgoblin Music\, a folk music instrument shop in Central London\, and was organised by a group of queer folk obsessive friends and shop employees. These sessions have given rise to a six-piece band which\, though firmly rooted in the traditional music of the British Isles\, draws widely on medieval and early music\, as well as the folk musical traditions from abroad. The sound concocted employs all manner of strings\, squeezeboxes\, hurdy-gurdy\, flutes\, horns\, bells and whistles. The Goblins interpret folk songs in relation to the political upheavals of past and present and strive to make a space for new audiences to experience traditional music in a manner which is both riotously joyful and deeply sincere.\nhttps://linktr.ee/goblin.band

SUMMARY:Silent Scores: Celebrating Female Composers
DESCRIPTION:The Bosmans ensemble will provide a feast of unjustly neglected string quartets by female composers of the 19th and 20th century. Forgotten enchanting compositions played by leading London musicians with animated introduction by Marina Solarek will path the way into the music and lives of Ethel Smyth – an active member of the suffragettes\, Fanny Mendelssohn – more than just the sister of Felix Mendelssohn\, Henriette Bosmans – composer of jewish heritage who lived through the nazi invasion in Amsterdam\, Rebecca Clarke – one of the first female member of the Queens hall Orchestra\, the romantic german composer Emily Mayer and Germaine Tailleferre – the only female member of  the famous group of french composers named “les six”. \nIs another generation growing up not finding out about the musical magic these women? There are so many female composers who have written not only huge amounts of chamber music but also mountains of symphonic works. It was immensely difficult for women to get their works published during their lifetimes. The Bosmans Ensemble has dedicated itself to uncover the unjustly forgotten music by so many outstanding female composers from 18th – 20th Centuries. \nBosmans Ensemble: \nViolins: Marina Solarek/Clare Hoffmann \nViola: Catarina Silva\, \nCello: Miriam Lowbury

SUMMARY:Antonio Forcione and Giorgio Serci: Guitar Duo
DESCRIPTION:Legendary award-winning Italian acoustic guitar virtuoso – -composer Antonio Forcione teams up with fellow Italian/Sardinian award-winning guitarist\, composer and educator Giorgio Serci. Passionate and melodic\, these are world-class performers. \nWith his vibrant and original blend of Latin\, African\, jazz\, and flamenco sounds\, Antonio Forcione is a highly inventive performer. He has teamed up with the evocative Giorgio Serci\, whose natural charisma equals his originality. Both virtuosos in their field they bring a unique and distinctive flavour to the musical world when they team up together. Be prepared to both laugh and be moved as they celebrate the unexpected elements in life with delicacy\, humour and\, not least\, passion. International tours have brought high critical acclaim from as far as Australia and Hong Kong to Russia\, the Caribbean\, the USA and all over Europe. \nAntonio Forcione is a master of his game\, not only “one of the greatest guitarists” The Guardian\, but globally respected for his original compositions. Following the release of his 20th album\, “Sketches of Africa”\, Antonio is now focusing on Cuba\, where he is collaborating with artists such as Raul Torres\, Pancho Amat\, Pedro Luis Ferrer\, Mario Salvador and Alejandro Martinez for his next album “Sketches of Cuba”. This also includes his brand-new music-documentary film called “Trova”.  A 60-minute film that takes us on a journey through the vibrant\, captivating world of Cuban Music\, showcasing the lives of musicians and trovadores with unlimited passion for their art. \nAs one critic put it “Imagine an Italian hybrid of Michael Hedges\, John McLaughlin and Django Rheinhardt … ferocious\, rampaging\, controlled power\, meticulous precision and clarity of expression … astonishing musical personality”  \n  \nGiorgio Serci has performed internationally and recorded with the likes of Ivan Lins\, Basia\, Kenny Wheeler\, Martin Taylor\,m Sylvain Luc\, David Garrett\, the LPO\, BBC Concert Orchestra\, Berlin Philarmonie\, Julian Lloyd Webber\, Franco Cerri\, Paulo Fresu to name but a few. His works blend jazz\, classical and world music with evocative melodies\, world grooves and contemporary jazz harmonies. \nAs a duo\, these two musicians are not just top of their game\, but the front men of their own bands. Audiences are guaranteed a powerful and dynamic show of wit\, personality and musical virtuosity. \n“Delicate\, dynamic and controlled\, the compositions and arrangements are inspired\, showcasing a mind-boggling variety of styles and forms. He’s an all plucking\, all strumming\, all clicking\, tapping\, slapping virtuoso of world jazz – and comes highly recommended.” \n**** The List \n“A one-off musical sensation. Unmissable” The Scotsman \n“Few acoustic guitarists can match Antonio Forcione for sheer instrumental virtuosity\, but fewer still come close to him as a composer” Jazzwise Magazine \n“Antonio Forcione produced a masterful performance as he playfully demonstrated his exceptional compositional and guitar skills with an ever-present smile to another sold-out devoted audience. Tonight\, he was joined by fellow fret master\, Giorgio Serci\, as their joint fingers flew\, at times ferociously and with tenderness\, across their fretboards.” Paul Davies\, Record Collector
