SUMMARY:A Scent of Zeros and Ones: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Czech artist and researcher Tereza Stehlíková will discuss her artistic practice concerned with the role our senses play in aesthetic experience. The talk will include a screening of a selected number of the artist’s short films and will be followed by a discussion with Sandra Gaudenzi\, an internationally acknowledged authority in the field of interactive and immersive documentary practice and professor Charles Spence\, an internationally renowned experimental psychologist with a specialization in neuroscience-inspired multisensory design. \n  \nSince 2005 Stehlíková’s work has been concerned with exploring the relationship between touch and audio-visual media which she uses in her film practice. Inspired by Czech artist Jan Švankmajer\, she embarked on a practice-based PhD at the Royal College of Art (2008-12). She subsequently expanded her interest to also include smell and taste. Her work has led her to a number of cross-disciplinary collaborations with chefs\, experimental psychologists and philosophers of perception\, resulting in immersive\, multi-sensory performances and short films. \nThe Covid pandemic became a catalyst for Stehlíková to start to question more deeply the increasingly more complex relationship between the digital technologies which now extend our perception and mediate our relationship to the outside world and others. In 2020 she launched her cross-disciplinary Tangible Territory journal\, where she invites artists\, philosophers and scientists to discuss the above-mentioned themes. \nStehlíková is also engaged in developing interactive performances which help to return participants to the here and now\, into their own body\, as a counter balance to the screen-based lives. The latest one of these was The Infra-Ordinary Lab\, which was developed specifically for Prague Quadrennial 2023 and explored Holešovicka Tržnice\, a market in Prague. \nThe event is organised by the Czech Centre. \n

SUMMARY:SCREAM + SOULSIDE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nSCREAM\nSOULSIDE\nFriday 10 May\nSaturday 11 May\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7pm | £20.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/xc9953269e0e & https://link.dice.fm/Qfab66a55a93 \nSCREAM formed in 1979. Drummer Kent Stacks\, bassist Skeeter Enoch Thompson and the brothers Pete and Franz Stahl attended school together in Bailey’s Crossroads\, Virginia\, when they began to discover the punk and new wave scene in DC and the provocative power of making music. Like most of the punk bands in DC\, they were influenced by the Bad Brains\, but their rock and roll sensibilities set them apart. In 1982\, they went into Inner Ear Studio with Ian MacKaye and Eddie Janney to record Dischord’s first full length album\, Still Screaming. \nScream followed this with a second full length album\, This Side Up\, in 1984. The band toured throughout the US and were one of the first US hardcore bands to tour Europe and the UK. In 1987\, they released Banging the Drum\, which was recorded at both Southern Studios in London and Inner Ear. In 1988\, No More Censorship was released on reggae label RAS records. Scream returned to Dischord to release Fumble in 1993. \nScream’s newest album\, DC Special\, was released late last year on Dischord Records. For this record\, Scream invited their extensive music community to help create a unique project that weaves the history of music in Washington DC into the story of the band. DC Special embodies the same sense of community and politics that inspired Scream from the start and is a truly special collection of new music that speaks to the present and also tells the story of DC music\, Scream\, and the influences that shaped them. \nhttps://dischord.com/release/194/dc-special \nSOULSIDE formed in Washington\, D.C. in 1985\, split up in 1989\, then reformed in 2014 and has continued playing and writing music since then. After releasing their debut album on Sammich/Dischord\, they recorded Trigger (Dischord\, 1988) and Hot Bodi-Gram (Dischord\, 1989)\, which were combined on the Soon Come Happy CD in 1990. The band toured extensively in the US and Europe during these years\, including groundbreaking shows in Poland and East Berlin shortly before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. \nIn 2020\, Soulside put out a new 7-inch\, This Ship\, their first release in 30 years\, which was recorded in Prague. In late 2022\, Dischord released a 12-song Soulside album\, A Brief Moment in the Sun\, which was written during the heart of the pandemic and recorded in person by J. Robbins in November 2021. Soulside toured the US and Europe in 2023 to support the new album. Soulside is: Alexis Fleisig (drums)\, Scott McCloud (guitar and vocals)\, Bobby Sullivan (vocals)\, and Johnny Temple (bass). \nhttps://soulside.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:The Right to Protest: A Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation about our right to protest\, and its evolving role in shaping a better future. Protest is recognised not only as a human right\, but also as a powerful catalyst for change. Young people\, historically at the forefront of activism\, continue to engage in protests on issues such as the climate crisis\, social inequalities\, and international conflicts. \nHowever\, recent government legislation\, including the Policing Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023\, new forms of technology and surveillance\, and increasingly dispersed centres of power\, are changing how we think about dissent\, and what is possible to achieve. \nThe 2024 Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue will explore this evolving landscape of protest in the 21st century\, deciphering what these changes may mean for all of us. A panel of research\, student\, and activist voices\, chaired by The Rt Hon the Baroness Usha Prashar\, will debate the new dynamics of protest\, and the impact of new government legislation. \nOur speakers will include Dr Daniella Lock (University of Oxford) and Jodie Beck (Liberty)\, with further details to be announced. \n  \n14 May 2024 from 6:30-8:30pm at Goodenough College\, London \n  \nTickets: £10 (£5 concessions) including light refreshments \n  \nVisit cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/events to book

SUMMARY:Jazz in the House 2024: Clark Tracey Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Clark Tracey presents his new quintet\, providing a platform for our most outstanding young musicians. \n  \nClark Tracey\, a well-established jazz master\, recognised as a most inventive jazz drummer\, composer\, educator and bandleader\, having appeared over forty years in the company of some of the world’s jazz greats\, presents his new quintet\, providing a platform for our most outstanding young musicians.\nThe Quintet have recently released their debut CD\, “Introducing Emily Masser”\, on Clark’s label Stray Horn Records\, followed by a national tour in April and May of 20 dates\, with the band heading to Lauderdale House on the 16th. \nProgrammed by Blow the Fuse. \n  \nPerformers \nClark Tracey – Drums \nA Five-Time Winner of “Best Drummer” in the British Jazz Awards\, Clark Tracey has built a reputation since the early ‘80s as a talent spotter of future stars of the British jazz scene; Guy Barker\, Alex Ridout\, Daniel Casimir\, Zoe Rahman and Mark Armstrong\, to name just a few. Clark was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music and the promotion of jazz. \nAlex Clarke – Saxophones \nAlex Clarke on alto and tenor saxophones is aged 23 and won the Rising Star in the British Jazz Awards in 2019 and was a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician in 2020. In 2022 she successfully released her debut CD “Only A Year” with Dave Newton\, Dave Green and Clark. \nEmily Masser – Vocals \nEmily Masser is an astonishing vocalist\, still 20 years of age and attending the Guildhall School of Music. Her vocalese has already impressed hardened jazz vocalists\, including Claire Martin and Liane Carroll who have both endorsed Emily and shared their stage with her. Daughter of saxophonist Dean Masser\, her years belie her considerable talent\, which began at Chetham’s School of Music. \nGraham Harvey – Piano \nGraham Harvey on piano is one of our most experienced pianists\, having studied at Berkley College in Boston\, becoming MD of Incognito\, currently Stacey Kent’s pianist and is now much sought after as a freelancer playing with major stars including Dave O’Higgins\, Alan Barnes and Mark Nightingale.\nJames Owston – Double Bass \nJames Owston on double bass is 27\, a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and a runner up in the BBC Young Jazz Musician Finals a few years ago.
