SUMMARY:Turning Earth Leyton Midsummer Market
DESCRIPTION:On 24/25 June\, Turning Earth will hold a huge artisan ceramics market in our members’ studio on Argall Avenue\, Leyton E10. There will be over 100 artists selling their hand-made ceramic wares over the course of the weekend. Come and stroll around the beautifully converted industrial building just down the road from Lea Bridge station and browse through the work of our talented members. Being regularly featured in Time Out and the Evening Standard and popular now all over London\, the market is an East London gem\, with people coming from all over the capital to buy hand-made ceramics directly from the maker. With live music from local musician Zoot Lynam and locally made artisanal food sold alongside beautiful tableware and sculpture\, it is all set to be a wonderful summer weekend – perfect for a day out!  \n\n\n\nThe market will take place in our real-life working pottery studio. Aside from the many hand-made wonders on sale\, visitors will be able to watch live demonstrations as our members will showcase their mesmerising skills on the potter’s wheel. If you want to get your hands on some clay\, there will also be a have-a-go stall where you (and your children) can try it out for yourself. Give it a try\, and if you like it\, maybe come back and do a course! \n\n\n\nTurning Earth’s Summer Market will again be part of the 11 Argall Ave Open Studios. The entire Argall Avenue industrial estate has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years\, with a wide variety of artisan businesses\, including hand-made furniture to craft beer and sourdough baking.

SUMMARY:The Thin Veil of London
DESCRIPTION:An unusual walk around the lesser-known corners of Holborn and Bloomsbury\, interwoven with mysteries from the stories of Arthur Machen. \n\n\n\n‘The best-guided walk I’ve ever been on.’ – Matt Brown\, Londonist \n\n\n\nThe stories of Arthur Machen (1863-1947) teem with sinister ancient pre-Christian horrors – troglodyte races and malevolent fauns – that lurk just beneath the surface of modern life. Yet for Machen\, these folklore evils were the flip side of a positive theology that invited the visionary to step through the veil of illusion into another world; a magical world. Sometimes the veil is lifted on ancient tumuli in the Welsh countryside of his childhood; often\, it can be found in a back street in London. \n\n\n\nThe Thin Veil of London takes up this theme. Much more than an ordinary tour\, it is a journey into the silent corners of Holborn and Bloomsbury. It is a journey into the worlds of Faery and science\, madness and ecstasy\, and what Machen called ‘the eternal beauty hidden beneath the crust of common and commonplace things; hidden and yet burning and glowing continually if you care to look with purged eyes’. \n\n\n\nThe walk begins in The Queen’s Larder pub in Bloomsbury and ends at another in the same area. See the Minimum Labyrinth website for more details.

SUMMARY:Drury Lane – guided walk in London
DESCRIPTION:A guided walk larded with street theatre\, songs and pub stops\, exploring the rich history of one of London’s most colourful quarters. \nDrury Lane is a guided walking tour from Minimum Labyrinth. \nRobert Kingham (presenter of Pagan London) explores the rich cultural history of one of London’s most colourful\, creative and dangerous quarters. Squalor\, crime\, politics and plague provide the scenery for a teeming cast of rakes and poets\, actors and gamblers\, playwrights and pickpockets\, Freemasons and highwaymen\, engravers and compositors\, gunpowder plotters and pornographers\, butchers and beadles\, judges and jail-breakers\, suffragettes and whores\, in a story that stretches from Anglo-Saxon settlers on the shores of the Thames to the starched pomp of the British Empire. \nWe promise you a bawdy\, boozy bacchanal\, bursting with everything you have come to expect from master storytellers Minimum Labyrinth: obscure factlets\, dramatic sweeps of history\, dark mysteriousness\, musical protrusions and theatrical surprises. \nStarting locations vary due to opening times\, so we will email you two days before\, but it will always be in a pub or café near the north end of Drury Lane. We will make two further stops for a drink along the route\, and end at a fourth pub in the same area.

SUMMARY:Instant Expert: Wonders in Space
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of exploring the mysteries and marvels of the universe with six leading scientists. You will start where everything began\, at the Big Bang. Throughout the day\, you will hear about the formation of galaxies\, the latest research into our nearest star\, the Sun\, the mysterious physics of black holes\, the quest to find life on Mars and the discovery of habitable planets outside our solar system. \n\n\n\nThe day will be hosted by a New Scientist journalist and there will be plenty of time to ask your questions to our galaxy of space experts. \n\n\n\nTickets for our popular Instant Expert one-day masterclasses are strictly limited and usual sell out quickly\, so book now to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\nTopics covered will include: \n\n\n\n\nBig Bang\n\n\n\nBlack Holes\n\n\n\nFormation of Galaxies\n\n\n\nMars Exploration\n\n\n\nExoplanets\n\n\n\nThe Sun\n\n\n\n\nTalks and speakers:\n\n\n\nThe Big Bang and the Atomic Universe\n\n\n\nKatherine Blundell\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nThe Universe began 13.8 billion years ago with the Big Bang and has been expanding ever since. In this talk\, Katherine Blundell will explain the recent revolutions in our understanding of the ‘Early Universe’\, which refers to the first few seconds after the Big Bang. She will explain: \n\n\n\n+ How have these crucial moments determined our universe today+? What is meant by ‘the horizon problem’ and ‘the flatness problem’+? How can we investigate events that happened so long ago \n\n\n\nBlack Holes: the most fascinating objects in the universe\n\n\n\nChristopher Reynolds\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Cambridge\n\n\n\nBlack holes are some of the strangest and most fascinating objects in the Universe. A place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out sounds like something out of science fiction. But how do black holes form\, how many are in our galaxy and beyond\, and do new and future technologies such as gravitational wave detectors and next-generation X-ray telescopes change how we observe them? \n\n\n\nGalaxies: building blocks of the universe\n\n\n\nClaudia Maraston\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Portsmouth\n\n\n\nGalaxies are vast collections of stars\, gas\, and dust\, held together by gravity. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are scattered throughout the universe. They are the building blocks that chart the history of our universe\, but how they form and evolve remains a mysterious process. Join Claudia Maraston as she reveals how her research modelling the galaxies of our universe is expanding our knowledge of cosmology. \n\n\n\nLooking for life on Mars\n\n\n\nAndrew Coates\, Deputy Director (solar system)\, Mullard Space Science Laboratory\, University College London\n\n\n\nAre we alone in the Universe? With missions to Mars and outer planet moons\, we hope to find out. We live in an exciting time for Mars exploration. In this talk\, Andrew Coates will discuss why Mars is a key target for space exploration\, look at some of the early results from the 2021 missions for context\, and outline our hopes for PanCam and the Rosalind Franklin rover. \n\n\n\nThe Sun: Our nearest star\n\n\n\nSarah Matthews\, Professor of Solar Physics\, University College London\n\n\n\nWhat has our nearest star taught us about all the other stars in the universe? Data from missions such as Japan’s Hinode and ESA’s Solar Orbiter has revealed much about its magnetic field\, solar flares and its corona. Join Sarah Matthews\, a solar physicist at University College London as she shares her insights on the Sun’s activity\, structure and impact on Earth based on her work on these probes. \n\n\n\nExoplanets: Life beyond the solar system?\n\n\n\nChris Impey\, Astronomer\, University of Arizona\n\n\n\nSince the first exoplanet\, or a planet beyond our solar system\, was discovered in 1995\, over 4\,000 more have been pinpointed\, including hundreds of Earth-like planets\, many of them habitable\, detected by the Kepler satellite. Join Chris Impey for a state-of-the-art account of what’s behind this accelerating progress\, what’s next\, and what it might mean for humanity’s future. \n\n\n\nWho should attend? \n\n\n\nIs anyone interested in the mysteries and marvels of space\, whatever your age or background? Whether you’re a scientist\, a student or simply a fascinated human being\, Instant Expert: Wonders of Space offers the chance to learn directly from the experts at our one-day masterclass. \n\n\n\nBenefits of attending: \n\n\n\n\nBecome an expert in one day\n\n\n\nInformal set-up\, meet like-minded people\n\n\n\nOpen your mind\, be inspired\n\n\n\nA unique chance to ask your burning questions to our experts\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s included in your ticket: \n\n\n\n\nIn-depth and engaging talks from six leading scientists\n\n\n\nAsk-an-expert Wonders of Space Question Time session\n\n\n\nYour chance to meet our six speakers and New Scientist host\n\n\n\nBuffet lunch\, plus morning and afternoon refreshments\n\n\n\nExclusive Instant Expert certificate\n\n\n\nExclusive on-the-day New Scientist subscription deal\, book and merchandise offers
