SUMMARY:Hamed Sinno: Poems of Consumption
DESCRIPTION:The iconic Lebanese-American indie-rock musician Hamed Sinno debuts their solo material for this year’s Shubbak Festival. \nAfter leading up the most prominent indie-rock band of the Arab world Mashrou’ Leila\, the prodigious composer returns to the stage with a new project co-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. \nPoems of Consumption is a literary song cycle that explores the resonances between Amazon-era consumerism\, mental illness\, unrequited love\, and environmental collapse\, without purporting to have an alternative or moral high-ground. It’s a portrait of Nero\, a desolate working-class melancholic crying at Whole Foods while the world outside comes to a boil. The compositions juxtapose the romanticism evoked by the sound of a string section\, with hyper-industrial electronica created out of the sounds of consumerism (crumpling cellophane\, bubble wrap\, unboxing\, ripping plastic) to swing between dancefloor & aural assault. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. Produced by MARSM. Supported by Arts Council England\, Bagri Foundation\, A.M. Qattan Foundation\, British Council\, English PEN\, and Goethe Institute.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP WITH DIGITAL ARTIST SHINJI TOYA Lives of Your Smartphones
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop uses a website-based version of Lives of Your Smartphones to contextualise the ecological issues of e-waste and planned obsolescence. \n\n\n\nDuring the session\, the participants will produce decaying versions of their smartphone handsets as png images to be uploaded online. The workshop contextualises the materiality of smartphones and their ecological implications to consider how the operation of the current mainstream technological development is harming the environment. The participants will collectively create a toolkit of alternative cosmological and cultural frameworks – this includes the poetic aesthetics of decay to counter the progress narrative of mainstream tech development and the cultural perception associated with Japanese animism and other ideas to think about alternative technologies with empathy and provision of de-anthropocentric views. \n\n\n\nParticipants are required to bring their smartphones. \n\n\n\nThe workshop has been developed with the support of Tanya Boyarkina (Compiler).

SUMMARY:Losing It
DESCRIPTION:An electric solo dance performance exploring the trauma of war through movement and sound. \nCan you still hear the bombs? I can hear them. \nGrowing up in a war zone means living and breathing politics. The Palestinian choreographer and performer Samaa Wakim asks herself how these experiences impact her identity and how generational trauma manifests in her body. In a journey towards the moment she began to fear for her freedom\, Losing It dives into memories of growing up under occupation\, exploring the various lived realities\, and the fantasies created out of fear and hope in order to survive. As fear overtakes Samaa\, her world begins to disintegrate: the floor becomes unstable\, and the sounds begin to warp\, creating a world where reality and fantasy blur. \nCreated in conversation with a live score by Samar Haddad King\, the soundscape features field recordings taken throughout Palestine since 2010. Accompanied by Wakim’s vocals\, the sounds of fear and safety come together to the point where past and present cloud the future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenerously supported by A. M. Qattan\, British Council Palestine.

SUMMARY:CARNABY'S BRAND NEW VIBRANT SUMMER INSTALLATION
DESCRIPTION:Carnaby welcomes a brand new installation this Summer made from recycled plastic. Working with recycling brand Are You Mad\, the installation will provide a vibrant feature in Carnaby Street and Newburgh Street\, launching the wider summer campaign ‘Carnaby in Colour’. \n\n\n\nThe temporary art piece\, which will be in situ from 6 July until mid-September\, comes in the form of three hand / heart-shaped arches that will be suspended above Carnaby Street and Newburgh Street.  These will sit alongside the existing Welcome To Carnaby Street arches that have also been upcycled with colourful recycled hand embellishments.  The installation has been made using waste plastic sourced from local shops and restaurants and the wider district. The installation took 4 weeks of collecting waste plastic\, 16 days of sheet pressing and a team of 13 people to create the finished materials. A total of 684 kg of recycled plastic waste was used in the process ranging from bakery crates and buckets to food palettes and unwanted shop decorations.

SUMMARY:From the daughter of a dictator
DESCRIPTION:/‘jes.mɪən/ /’aʊdiʃəʊ/ /’ʁrɑː.wiː/  lived and cautiously thrived in a dictatorship for almost two decades. ‘From The Daughter Of A Dictator’ is a one-person show exploring the personal journey of migration from Baghdad to Beirut to Berlin to Britain.  \n\n\n\nThere still lives the belief\, a false one perhaps\,  that the UK\, Europe\, “the West”  are the final bastions of human rights. But what if these illusory safe shores of democracy are in danger of disappearing.  What if living in a democracy is becoming no different than living in a dictatorship. Where do we go then? \n\n\n\nMore importantly\, where will you go? \n\n\n\n‘From The Daughter Of A Dictator’ is a collage of fragmented images and anecdotes about displacement\, hope\, sorrow\, joy\, and resistance converging  into the body and voice of one person trying to orient in a violently loud\, crushing world. Stories are spoken\, whispered\, sung and woven together with the conviction of a ‘rawiya’.  The body takes its chances to hold\, preserve\, resist and crack under the weight and pressure of extremes. \n\n\n\nThis is a performance about the dreamers who left\, and those who remain. A reminder of our individual and collective power\, and human right to dream. \n\n\n\nThisisamanifestofordreamers. \n\n\n\nIt’s high time we met. \n\n\n\nWith love and urgency\,  \n\n\n\nYasmeen \n\n\n\nWritten and performed by Yasmeen Audisho Ghrawi.  \n\n\n\nCreated in collaboration with Emma Bonnici\, Charly Monreal\, R.M. Sánchez-Camus.
