SUMMARY:Reconstruction of Occupation + Extended introduction by Dr Thomas Lorman
DESCRIPTION:A masterful cinematic adventure of a truly forensic nature that uses newly discovered footage to provide a unique perspective on the 1968 military invasion of Czechoslovakia and its aftermath. \n\n\n\nThe discovery of 3 ½ hours of previously unseen\, professionally shot footage of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia that had been sitting in a garage for more than 40 years triggered a project reconstructing events that took place 55 years ago. Director Jan Sikl\, known for his meticulous work with private family film archives\, used an open call broadcast on Czech Television to trace the people’s identities and locations depicted in the footage and acquire further authentic film material.  Memories of specific events spring to life\, and what starts out as an investigation gradually becomes a reflection of how a historical moment has imprinted itself on us all.  The resulting film combines found professional and amateur footage with 18 interviews with those both behind and in front of the camera during that time while documenting Sikl‘s investigative work. Using a lip-reading expert to decipher what is being said in the silent footage and travelling to visit people and locations across the whole country\, Sikl provides a new perspective on these historical events\, putting a human face on the invasion and its aftermath while creating a specific form of social memory. \n\n\n\nJan Šikl\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia 2021\, 95’  \n\n\n\nPremiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2021  \n\n\n\nThe winner of the Best History Documentary Award at the Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nExtended introduction by Dr Thomas Lorman \n\n\n\nThomas Lorman is a lecturer (teaching) in central European history at UCL’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES)\, where he has been teaching and researching since 2010. His most recent publications are The Making of the Slovak People’s Party. Religion\, Nationalism\, and the Culture War in Early 20th-Century Europe (Bloomsbury\, 2020) and A History of the Hungarian Constitution: Law\, Government and Political Culture in Central Europe (Bloomsbury\, 2020)\, which he co-edited with Ferenc Hörcher. He also serves as editor of the journal Central Europe. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAdmission: \n\n\n\n£5 \n\n\n\nBook now: \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\nThe exhibition was created by the Czech Centres in collaboration with the Czech Technology Agency. Organised by the Czech Centre London in association with the Czech Embassy.

Due to the pandemic\, it featured as part of the Brighton Festival online that year. This will be its first live performance.\n\n \n\nThe concert concludes with Mozart’s Requiem which was famously completed after his death by his pupil\, Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Is it possible to eat a ‘poor’ diet\, with excess calories but offset it by increasing your physical exercise? \n\n\n\nNew obesity drugs- what’s the evidence?\n\n\n\nSimon Cork\, Senior Lecturer in Physiology\, Anglia Ruskin University \n\n\n\nSemaglutide (also known by brand names such as Wegovy and Ozempic) is a medication for type 2 diabetes that has recently been approved to treat obesity. Results have been dramatic\, showing a 15 per cent reduction in body weight over a year when combined with exercise and eating healthily. In this talk\, we’ll explore how this medication works\, what side effects it has and if it is really the solution to the obesity epidemic. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAfternoon session: Wellbeing\, talks and speakers: \n\n\n\nOptimising Sleep: Unravelling the Neuroscience and enhancing sleep habits\n\n\n\nNicola Barclay\, Lecturer in Sleep Medicine\, the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute\, University of Oxford \n\n\n\nNicola Barclay will delve into the fascinating world of sleep\, exploring its intricate neuroscience\, the importance of sufficient sleep\, common sleep problems\, and evidence-based strategies to improve sleep quality. By combining research-based findings with therapeutic techniques\, she will provide practical insights for optimising sleep and its impact on overall well-being. \n\n\n\nYour immune system – Can it be “boosted”? If not\, why not?\n\n\n\nAl Edwards\, Associate Professor in Biomedical Technology\, University of Reading / Southampton \n\n\n\nAdvertisements are full of claims for ‘Immune Boosting’ products\, but is there any evidence that we can strengthen our body’s most fascinating system? We do know that vaccines work very well\, but at the same time find it very hard to measure the general status of our immune system; this makes it surprisingly difficult to know how to strengthen immunity through behaviour or nutrition. \n\n\n\nHow to be happy: all you need is stoicism?\n\n\n\nTim Lebon\, Accredited psychotherapist and author \n\n\n\nDid the Stoics in ancient Greece discover the psychology of a happy life over 2\,000 years ago\, and how are their teachings similar to modern approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy? \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nWho should attend? \n\n\n\nAnyone interested in health and well-being\, whatever your age or background. SUMMARY:Exclusive Opportunity: Race2Dinner Deconstructing Karen Screening in London
DESCRIPTION:Join us on for a transformative evening of uncompromising truth-telling\, dialogue\, and relationship-building that aims to open up challenging yet hopeful conversations around racism\, systems of oppression\, and white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing a screening and interactive discussion with documentary producers\, authors\, and founders of the Race2Dinner\, Regina Jackson and Saira Rao\, this will be an evening unlike others – direct\, at times difficult\, and not for the faint of heart.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will begin with a screening of their film Deconstructing Karen\, where we see the harmful and often dangerous effects of white women’s complicity in upholding white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis screening is an opportunity to reflect on our own behaviours and biases\, and to challenge ourselves to actively work towards dismantling the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm marginalised communities.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegina and Saira will also discuss their powerful and thought-provoking book White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better. This bestseller challenges white women to confront their own complicity in the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm communities of colour. A copy of the book will be included at this event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will culminate with providing participants with the opportunity to connect with one another and process what they experienced during the screening and conversation.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite everyone to come with an open mind and willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. We hope that this event will be the foundation for forming meaningful community relationships\, continued reflection and action towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.

SUMMARY:Innovations for a Sustainable Future - Private Viewing
DESCRIPTION:PRIVATE VIEWING: Thursday 13 July\, 6:30-8:30pm \n\n\n\nFree entry\, registration necessary (more info on website\, see below) \n\n\n\nA brand new interactive exhibition touching on the fast-evolving digital revolution as well as the pressing challenges faced by our generation. With both Europe and the world undergoing a major technological transformation\, new phenomena such as artificial intelligence are slowly making their way into all aspects of our lives\, from communication to health\, from culture to sustainability. What are the innovations and scientific discoveries shaping our future? \n\n\n\nThe Innovations for a Sustainable Future exhibition seeks to create a dialogue between science\, society\, culture\, and art. Its main aim is to address current global issues and the inevitable role science and new technologies will play in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for a better\, more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs were adopted by all UN member states agreeing to work on\, among other things\, a plan to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger\, achieve gender equality and avert climate threats by 2030.This interactive augmented reality exhibition was artistically rendered by the renowned Czech graphic designer Pavel Fuksa\, drawing from the concept of the successful Czech Innovation Expo which travelled the world presenting Czech scientific discoveries and innovations. The new London exhibition highlights innovations and issues on a European level\, reflecting the higher purpose of science with special emphasis on the means needed to implement the ambitious SGDs. \n\n\n\nHow the Exhibition Works \n\n\n\nVisitors will see seemingly static outdoor panels with abstract symbols on the walls. After downloading the exhibition app (available free for Android and iOS)\, they will see the space around them come to life on their devices\, allowing them to explore in a fun and unique way a variety of scientific stories and fascinating information about technological innovations contributing to our sustainable future. \n\n\n\nRegistration necessary: \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\nExhibition Website: \n\n\n\n\nExhibition dates: 14 July – 30 September\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition was created by the Czech Centres in collaboration with the Czech Technology Agency. Organised by the Czech Centre London in association with the Czech Embassy.

The event will be held from 10.30 until midday in the Grand Terrace of the station itself\, paired with performances by local school children. \n\n\n\nEvent Details \n\n\n\nDate: 10th July 2023 \n\n\n\nEvent hours: 10:30 – 12:00 \n\n\n\nDuration: The event should last up to 90 minutes \n\n\n\nAge requirement: All ages are welcome! \n\n\n\nLocation: Grand Terrace St. Pancras International Station Euston Road London N1C 4QP \n\n\n\nAccessibility: The station is wheelchair accessible \n\n\n\nCost/Tickets: Non ticketed free to attend \n\n\n\nJoseph is an award-winning performance poet whose debut children’s poetry collection Werewolf Club Rules\, came out in 2014 and won the CLiPPA (Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award) the same year. His work also comprises several further lyrical children’s stories and poetry collections\, including the critically acclaimed Luna Loves… series and\, most recently\, My Beautiful Voice (2022). \n\n\n\nJoseph’s attendance comes as St. Pancras International station has once again teamed up with the Betjeman Poetry Prize for a fifth year of Track Record\, a community project in Camden which aims to give students in local schools a chance to take part in a series of poetry workshops to capture their imagination and creativity. Track Record aims to work with two schools that are local to St. Pancras International to give all year five students from Torriano and Argyle primary schools in Camden an immersive and inspiring poetry-making experience. The eager young writers involved have written a sensational collection of poems\, both punchy and moving\, peppered with uproarious jokes. Imogen Lycett Green (granddaughter of Sir John Betjeman) & poet Paul Lyalls created this scheme following their close partnership with the Betjeman Poetry Prize in the 2010s to further inspire the next generation of poets. \n\n\n\nThrough the initiative\, poet Paul Lyalls delivers workshops to children about our links to poetry and gives advice and guidance to students so that they feel confident and inspired to write their own poetry. The poems are then printed in an anthology (making each child a proud published poet)\, and selected students are chosen to read their poems at St. Pancras International\, and their poetry will be displayed in the station throughout the summer. \n\n\n\nSt. Pancras International itself will forever be linked with the world of poetry as it was saved from demolition by poet Sir John Betjeman who led a campaign to stop the demolition of the station in the 1960s. In tribute to the famous poet and railway enthusiast\, an 8.5ft sculpture by Martin Jennings was designed and installed on the station’s Grand Terrace for visitors to enjoy and learn about.

SUMMARY:Hamed Sinno: Poems of Consumption
DESCRIPTION:The iconic Lebanese-American indie-rock musician Hamed Sinno debuts their solo material for this year’s Shubbak Festival. \nAfter leading up the most prominent indie-rock band of the Arab world Mashrou’ Leila\, the prodigious composer returns to the stage with a new project co-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. \nPoems of Consumption is a literary song cycle that explores the resonances between Amazon-era consumerism\, mental illness\, unrequited love\, and environmental collapse\, without purporting to have an alternative or moral high-ground. It’s a portrait of Nero\, a desolate working-class melancholic crying at Whole Foods while the world outside comes to a boil. The compositions juxtapose the romanticism evoked by the sound of a string section\, with hyper-industrial electronica created out of the sounds of consumerism (crumpling cellophane\, bubble wrap\, unboxing\, ripping plastic) to swing between dancefloor & aural assault. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and the Barbican. Produced by MARSM. Supported by Arts Council England\, Bagri Foundation\, A.M. Qattan Foundation\, British Council\, English PEN\, and Goethe Institute.

SUMMARY:WORKSHOP WITH DIGITAL ARTIST SHINJI TOYA Lives of Your Smartphones
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop uses a website-based version of Lives of Your Smartphones to contextualise the ecological issues of e-waste and planned obsolescence. \n\n\n\nDuring the session\, the participants will produce decaying versions of their smartphone handsets as png images to be uploaded online. The workshop contextualises the materiality of smartphones and their ecological implications to consider how the operation of the current mainstream technological development is harming the environment. The participants will collectively create a toolkit of alternative cosmological and cultural frameworks – this includes the poetic aesthetics of decay to counter the progress narrative of mainstream tech development and the cultural perception associated with Japanese animism and other ideas to think about alternative technologies with empathy and provision of de-anthropocentric views. \n\n\n\nParticipants are required to bring their smartphones. \n\n\n\nThe workshop has been developed with the support of Tanya Boyarkina (Compiler).
