SUMMARY:WOLF EYES + YEAH YOU + RUBBER
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nWOLF EYESYEAH YOURUBBERSunday 5 November100 Club\, 100 Oxford St\, Oxford Street\, W1D 1LL7.30pm | £14 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/b59d2922fb18 \n\n\n\nWOLF EYES have spent 25 years fusing together DIY electronics with the avant-garde sensibilities of Fluxus and the granite of dreary Midwestern life. Their new album ‘Dreams In Splattered Lines’ is a surreal dreamscape of disorienting sound collages\, where hit songs are transformed into terrariums of sonic flora and decimated fauna. As if pulled from a fever dream\, the surrealists of the 1960s converge with alien electronic blues musicians in an underworld of mystery. The air is thick with car wash radio white noise\, crackling and fizzing like a toxic elixir\, spoken word poetry transmissions as absurd and cryptic phrases. Each corroded aural environment is a microcosm of chaos\, honed to razor-sharp precision. Swept away in a whirlwind of thirteen perplexing narratives\, each one an unpredictable journey through subterranean worlds\, a sonic trip of reality folded into itself. \n\n\n\nWolf Eyes have released three albums in the first half of this year. ‘Dreams In Splattered Lines’ has been preceded by the January compilation of collaborations ‘Presents Difficult Messages’\, and April saw the release of ‘Wolf Eyes w/ Spykes’\, bringing a much sought after early release to vinyl for the first time\, documenting a recording session pivotal to the ongoing development of the group’s sound. Alongside this has been the usual steady stream of lathe cuts\, side hustles\, art and inzanity. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://wolfeyes.xyz/\n\n\n\n\nYEAH YOU is the Welsh duo of Elvin Brandhi and Gustav Thomas which came out of the Tyneside noise scene in 2013. Their music is the monster they find hiding under every surface from formica to fibre glass to fortune and unforgivingness; their charge is to explode its merciless tongues so as to lick the dancefloor clean of reactionary gloop. The duo have released on Slip\, Opal Tapes and Alter\, with forthcoming releases on Nashazphone and Mouhoi. ‘… an absurd pairing of the Rilkean sublime [with] knackered EDM… Wildly inventive and genuinely weird… underground music at its best.’ Stewart Smith\, Wire (413) \n\n\n\n\nhttps://yeahyou.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nRUBBER is a hardcore punk band featuring members of Joy-Rides\, Negative Space\, Sauna Youth and Scrap Brain. Minor details\, interference\, a ceramic light – for your consideration.

SUMMARY:Blue Pencil\, Chatterbrain & New York Jen
DESCRIPTION:An evening of Work in Progress one-person shows with Mariana Feijó’s Blue Pencil\, Rebecca Schuster’s Chatterbrain\, and New York Jen. \n\n\n\nNew York Jen \n\n\n\n(Jen Ives) \n\n\n\nNew York Jen is New York’s most famous and funniest comedian. She is visiting London for one day only and YOU are lucky enough to get to see her. Experience TRUE New York style stand up comedy for one night only!Chatterbrain \n\n\n\n(Rebecca Schuster) \n\n\n\nZone in for this raucous explosion of character-comedy exploring overthinking\, indecision\, and that absolute wazzock of an inner critic. \n\n\n\nWhilst humming and hawing over a plate of beans\, Rebecca Schuster realised overthinking was the only thing holding her back. She decides to stop listening to her inner-judge. Along the way\, she discovers truths about herself she didn’t want to know. \n\n\n\nWho is she without that nagging voice inside her head? What if there was a cure for overthinking? Is killing the inner critic really the answer? And what the hell does marmalade have to do with it? \n\n\n\nChatterbrain is the debut solo show from Rebecca Schuster\, Soho Theatre alumni\, writer and comedian. Analysis paralysis is her M.O. and nobody can tell her to snap out of it! Character-comedy overthought\, as it shouldn’t be. \n\n\n\n“sublime to watch\, this lady has super talent” – London Theatre OneBlue Pencil \n\n\n\n(as told by Mariana Feijó) \n\n\n\nIt’s a journey through my life\, from my conservative\, Portuguese Catholic roots to exploring my sexual identity in London’s vibrant queer scene\, and the comic conflict between those two realities. I want to challenge people’s perception of world politics\, through the story of Portugal’s 48 year long dictatorship and how that affected its democratic future\, enticing the audience to work towards an equitable future. After working with Duckie in a huge immersive theatre production that was radical\, queer and educational\, I want to make similar work\, leading people into laughter and activism without it feeling didactic. I’m inspired by the surprise that people who don’t share my lived experience\, show when they learn of countries in western Europe that weren’t in democracies as late as the 70s\, and that the freedoms of Democracy can be taken away. It’s an important story and it’s my story to tell. \n\n\n\nTICKETS \n\n\n\nWe know it’s tough time for people in this cost of living times\, and set a few different price options. If you can afford the Comfort ticket\, please do choose that option as we’re also living through the same times. If the Tough Times ticket is still a stretch for you\, and you’d really like to come\, do get in touch\, as we believe no one should be denied access due lack of funds. \n\n\n\nACCESSIBILITY \n\n\n\nUnfortunately the venue is up a flight of stairs – if you know of an affordable venue in London where we wouldn’t need to make this disclaimer\, please send it our way! \n\n\n\nAt this point in time\, we can’t afford to hire BSL interpreters or audio describers\, but there may be future showings where this will be a possibility. \n\n\n\nThere might be loud music and sudden noises\, but you’re welcome to enter and leave the performance space freely\, and move around if you feel the need. \n\n\n\nThe room is up a flight of stairs from a busy pub downstairs\, whose entrance is towards Whitechapel Road\, in a busy side road that also leads to the London Royal Hospital. \n\n\n\nMariana Feijó \n\n\n\nQueer\, Portuguese multidisciplinary artist based in London. Her work is inspired by a need to communicate and create community\, drawing from personal experience. They’re influenced by historical archives and research\, using stories old and new to connect with audiences. They’ve studied at the prestigious institutions the Upright Citizen’s Brigade and The Brooklyn Comedy Collective in New York\, and are a Soho Theatre Lab alumni. They’ve worked with Duckie\, on their heritage project Princess\, from research to performance. As part of an LGBTQ community group at the British Museum\, they’ve created bespoke performance pieces for their Pride event\, two years running. \n\n\n\nRebecca Schuster \n\n\n\nRebecca Schuster is a Canadian comedian based in London England. She has been improvising since 2011 and has trained with Improv Olympics\, Free Association\, Monkey Toast and members of the Upright Citizens Brigade. When not improvising\, Rebecca writes sketch comedy\, performs solo character acts\, and eats baked beans with her bare hands straight out of a can. She is a Soho Theatre alumni. \n\n\n\nJen IvesJen Ives is a stand up comedian & writer from London. She has written for Channel 4\, Hattrick\, Radio 4\, Dave (among others) and has appeared on Joe Lycett’s Big Pride Party\, and Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. Jen has supported Jessica Fostekew on tour and frequently headlines shows in London and beyond! \n\n\n\nJen’s debut Edinburgh hour ‘Peak Trans’ sold out it’s run in Edinburgh last year (you can watch it free here \n\n\n\n‘Jen Ives is a wonderful comedian. I’ve discovered her comedy in recent years\, and I can’t get enough of it.’ \n\n\n\n(James Acaster) \n\n\n\n‘A brilliant comedian’ \n\n\n\n(Joe Lycett)

SUMMARY:Bill Tidy MBE Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:On 9th November\, Hyatt Place London City East is honoured to launch a retrospective of the work of renowned cartoonist Bill Tidy MBE. The exhibition is part of the hotel’s Curated at Hyatt Place series and bursary. \nThe exhibition will be the first retrospective of Bill’s work since his passing in March of this year. The exhibition has been curated by Bill’s daughter Sylvia Tidy-Harris and sees thirty of Bill’s much-loved cartoons displayed throughout the hotel\, with all the works available to buy. \n\n\n\n\n\nBill Tidy MBE was one of an elite group of phenomenally talented cartoonists\, and he was best loved for memorable and hilarious cartoons.  He was also the fastest cartoonist\, able to entertain audiences with lightning speed as he drew as fast as he spoke. In addition\, Bill was an author and illustrator of over 100 books\, a writer and a TV and radio presenter. Bill’s most famous and most popular cartoon of all is\, “Is there Any News of the Iceberg?”. \nHis unique wit and indomitable style earned him many fans throughout his career of over 65 years. Many will recall his popular cartoon strips\, such as The Fosdyke Saga (Daily Mirror) and The Cloggies (Private Eye). \nBill had an exceptional and innate ability to tailor highly amusing cartoons to any theme\, irrespective of the occasion and however sensitive or diverse the subject matter may be. \nThe Curated at Hyatt Place\, art exhibition series\, takes place across the Hyatt Place London City East Hotel in Whitechapel\, with works displayed throughout the skyline bar PocketSquare and Zoom East Kitchen & Bar. \nAll of the artwork in the Curated at Hyatt Place Bill Tidy exhibition will be available to purchase\, with 25% of all sales going into the art bursary that will be used to support and fund work from a new cartoonist. The exhibition will be open to all visitors to the hotel\, who will be able to enjoy Bill’s work while they stay\, drink or dine. \nGuests can visit the hotel to enjoy the free exhibition from 9th November 2023 until February 2024. Find the exhibition at Hyatt Place London City East\, 45 Whitechapel Road\, E1 1DU.

SUMMARY:The Revolution will be published: Rising to future challenges in the book trade\, after four decades of change
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively evening of insights and discussions on the future of the book industry. \n\n\n\nOver the last forty years\, book publishing has undergone a number of revolutions\, and now AI faces urgent new reasons to evolve rapidly. Reflecting on this journey and challenge\, Stephen Page (Chair of Faber & Faber) will describe the forces that made the industry of today and discuss what must change and what must not if it is to evolve successfully. Speaking as an eyewitness to events over four decades\, he will propose that publishing is intrinsically revolutionary\, amplified by technology shifts\, and must see itself as part of the collective endeavour to make knowledge and stories public to the benefit of society. \n\n\n\nAgenda: \n\n\n\n\nRegistration (5:30 – 6pm)\n\n\n\nTalk with Stephen Page (6 – 7pm)\n\n\n\nNetworking and refreshments (7 – 8pm)

DESCRIPTION:A harrowing\, yet beautiful take on patriarchy and internalised misogyny. \n\n30 year-old-Šarlota returns to the mountain village she escaped from 20 years earlier following a tragic incident involving her sister. In her quest to uncover the truth she is confronted by the misogyny of superstitious villagers with only young herbalist Mira on her side. The tension grows\, strange events and whispers of evil begin to invade reality leading the villagers to accuse Šarlota of witchcraft and murder.  Striking cinematography with swirling mists and a mysterious forest links women and nature and delivers a haunting atmosphere filled with sense of isolation in this enignatic and beguiling drama which won the main prize at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival. \nDir. SUMMARY:DEAR NORA + R. AGGS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nDEAR NORAR. AGGSMonday 13 NovemberThe Waiting Room\, 175 Stoke Newington High St\, London\, N16 0PE7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/wcbfc13f5224 \n\n\n\nDEAR NORA’s sound encompasses a spectrum of styles\, including classic rock\, experimental music\, ethereal pop\, new age\, folk\, punk\, and R&B. Katy Davidson (pronouns: they/she) writes lyrics with layered meanings that contemplate the vast realms and intersections of wilderness\, humanity\, morality\, technology\, late capitalism\, and love. Dear Nora\, Katy’s band since 1999\, could sound like anything (and it’ll always sound like Dear Nora). Katy reinvents themselves at any moment\, yet there is always the familiar face of a friend\, taking us on a musical trip we didn’t know we needed to go on until we did. The latest time around\, Katy and the Dear Nora crew bring us ‘Human Futures’ (2022\, Orindal)\, which is their first LP recorded in a commercial recording studio. There are new kinds of songs and old kinds of songs\, but there is still the voice of beauty and sanity that I’ve come to know and love over the years. The great strength of Dear Nora’s music is that it takes stock of its time and place and captures something that we can revisit later. It seems like the world depicted in these songs will continue to become more unrecognizable and more unlivable – but this is also tempered by my feeling of being understood by this music and that life itself\, shadows and all\, is still beautiful and mysterious in the eyes of Dear Nora.https://dearnora.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nR. AGGS is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter based in Glasgow. Ray Aggs\, a prolific specialist in euphoric post-punk\, has achieved international acclaim with collaborative touring projects Trash Kit\, Shopping and Sacred Paws. Creating zines and co-ordinating workshops that encourage women\, non-binary people\, and people of colour to form bands\, Aggs has galvanised the DIY scene in the UK. Ray released a solo album on Lost Map Records as part of their Visitations residency in 2019 and self-released//Tape 1// in 2020. Both releases showcase Aggs’ signature hybrid post-punk/highlife inspirations stripped down to new minimal extremes. Pulsating\, electronic beats\, coolly-recited lyrical mantras and spindly guitar lines abound in this life-affirming music that speaks directly to your heart.https://r4ggs.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Art Talent Show
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to 2020’s entrance exams at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts\, where hundreds of wannabe artists are battling for a coveted spot in one of three studios. Assessed\, interrogated and challenged by three different sets of professors\, they candidly and often with unintended comic effect\, discuss gender and sexuality\, identity issues and artistic beliefs revealing intergenerational tension and cultural identity clashes. Granted unprecedented access\, filmmakers use observational camerawork to juxtapose these encounters with shots of an older pragmatic receptionist to provide a dryly humorous commentary while raising questions over the role and value of art. Hilarious and and absorbing.\n\n\n\n\n\nAdéla Komrzy\, Tomáš Bojar\, Czech Republic 2022\, 102’\, English subtitles \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Bojar and Komrzý have been blessed with an eccentric cast of faculty members who are fascinating and often hilarious. SUMMARY:NWANDO EBIZIE: WRITING THE FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:‘If suffering purifies the soul / then I’m as pure as one could hopeA beauty bordering on the obscene…’ \n\n\n\nEnter a liminal space for a sonic exploration of myth\, fairytale and archetypes. A playground of dream soundscapes\, where experimental dance meets Klezmer. \n\n\n\nThe final instalment in London Sinfonietta’s fourth series of its pioneering Writing the Future music creation scheme sees visionary multidisciplinary artist Nwando Ebizie turn the traditional concert experience on its head. This groundbreaking new work will use multi-sensory immersion to challenge your perception of reality: poetry expressed in British Sign language and passionate dance create visual music\, whilst vibrations throughout the space create a haptic experience. This multi-sensory theatrical and musical evening oscillates from romantic songs to nightmarish visions\, intimate reverie and lucid horror. \n\n\n\nThe inter-dependent music\, English text and theatrical BSL were created symbiotically to engender many different sensory points of access to the piece whilst creating a unique art-music event. \n\n\n\n‘Looking to the light\, through the dark forests\, meeting here\, beyond the crossroads’ \n\n\n\nWriting the Future offers early career music creators unique opportunities to nurture their talents and to develop a new piece in partnership with a world-class producing ensemble\, and established mentors. The current cohort of composers is Nwando Ebizie\, Alicia Jane Turner\, Luke Lewis\, and Alex Paxton. Nwando has joined forces with a number of prominent D/deaf and disabled artists including actor Sophie Stone to develop the piece. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this is an immersive event with a range of different seating options\, including benches and bean bags. If you have any access requirements\, please email info@londonsinfonietta.org.uk to discuss this with us. \n\n\n\nNwando Ebizie  Fall and then Rise on a Soft Winter’s Morning (London Sinfonietta commission\, World premiere) \n\n\n\nChisato Minamimura  dancerNat Sharp  art directorChloe Rooke  conductorLondon Sinfonietta

SUMMARY:For Data You Are\, And To Data You Shall Return / 为数据所生，亦归数据而去
DESCRIPTION:For Data You Are\, And To Data You Shall Return is an online exhibition of generative\, video and gamified works exploring diverse perspectives surrounding digital death\, renewal and reincarnation in the virtual domain. Surveying the nuance of long-standing and newer ruminations around the circularity of life and death\, in technological\, bodily\, and spiritual contexts\, the exhibition sees death as a narrative with which to discuss life. Death in the digital world is\, in a particular dimension\, describable\, observable\, and even manufacturable\, as well as manageable and repairable. Life in the digital world is\, on the contrary\, more mysterious. \n\n\n\nThe online exhibition comprises works that span a range of digital media processes and outcomes; from hypnotic encounters with concealed code to custom playful gamifications\, and planetary-scale simulations\, the exhibition presents expanded video practices\, role-playing narratives and reconnection with devices and their material origins\, drawing links between communications across ethers and the encounters of rogue or unknown agents acting on behalf of their meatspace counterparts. Decay\, sites of renewal\, and rethinking our existence in the digital and environmental domain are foregrounded. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition title is a subtle twist on the theological reference in the book of Genesis which infers non-immortality. This concept aligns with the Chinese Buddhist philosophy of “sheng-si-lun-hui\,” which is tied to the idea of karma and its role as social currency in the afterlife. By imbuing the interface with a uniquely generative background – a mystical quality of exposing the underside of codified processes – and by referring to data as the dust you shall return to\, the exhibition seeks to symbolise this continuous cycle of existence of all things. \n\n\n\nAccess the project here.

SUMMARY:Asda's Michael Bublé-Powered Christmas Tree
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate its 2023 Christmas campaign starring none other than Michael Bublé\, Asda has turned to a little Christmas magic (and a large festive helping of technology) to create a unique first-of-its-kind public Christmas tree: one where all the lights are 100% Michael Bublé-powered. People simply step up to the mic\, give the tree their best Bublé and watch it dance and dazzle with light. \n\n\n\nEndorsed by Michael Bublé himself\, Asda’s ‘karaoke’ Christmas tree has been created using state-of-the-art tech that can detect when a person is singing a Christmas hit by the Canadian superstar into the microphone and immediately triggers over 300 metres of lights to illuminate all over the tree. \n\n\n\nAnd far more sophisticated than a mere song-activated ‘on/off’ switch\, the custom-made technology uses voice recognition to detect the level of effort from a singer as well as their pitch. The more effort put in\, the more correct notes hit and the more of a show people put on\, the more the tree lights up. \n\n\n\nThe 20-foot-tall Michael Bublé-powered Christmas tree is being unveiled outside of London’s Kings Cross Station\, where it will be in place for one day only on the 16th of November\, from 10am to 7pm. Members of the public are invited to get into the festive spirit by singing live directly to the Christmas tree.

SUMMARY:The Book of Prague; A City in Short Fiction
DESCRIPTION:The winner of two Magnesia Litera Awards Marek Šindelka\, the book´s co-editor Jan Zikmund and writer Veronika Bendová will launch an anthology of short stories by the ten of city´s most famous writers\, including the illustrious Bohumil Hrabal\, that present Prague in a completely new light. Away from the Old Town Square\, these stories take us into less-visited corners of Prague: from the steep streets of the proudly edgy Žižkov neighbourhood\, to the flood-ravished suburb of Karlín\, from the tensions experienced by the city’s Romani community to the dehumanising post-war redevelopment of areas like Libeň proving that there are always sides to a city’s character you would never have imagined. SUMMARY:When you are in a dark room\, you learn to do a simple move: to push the switch and turn on the light… simple\, isn’t it?
DESCRIPTION:For some\, life is an adventure\, a beautiful or challenging one. For others\, it is a simple or complicated journey or a mountain difficult to climb\, and there are those who consider it a miracle regardless of any difficulties or conveniences that may exist.Does the thread of Ariadne\, leading us out of the labyrinth\, exist? And where do the Socratic “know thyself”\, Science\, Art and Philosophy meet our everyday lives? Is the world the way you see it? And what does “see” mean in this instance? And\, in the end… can it be something so simple as pushing the switch and turning on the light in a dark room?Join us to find the answers!Friday 17/11\, 19:15\, at the Hellenic Centre London!Free entry! \n\n\n\nBooking on 07960 797 435 or at info@omilos-eksipiretiton.gr

SUMMARY:Marius Neset: Geyser
DESCRIPTION:Our third collaboration with the saxophone virtuoso and composer \n\n\n\nLondon Sinfonietta is reunited with “marvel” Norwegian saxophone virtuoso and composer Marius Neset to perform their “elemental” third collaboration\, Geyser. Tension boils under the surface of this piece\, unleashed intermittently in ecstatic outbursts of rhythmic energy\, and echoed in the friction between Marius’ jazz quintet and the crack new music ensemble. \n\n\n\nThis third collaboration highlights Marius’ increasing affinity for the ensemble’s sound\, building on their two previous collaborations\, Snowmelt (2015) and Viaduct (2019). \n\n\n\n“With an expanded palette to play with… Neset ran riot in a spellbinding performance that ran the gamut of musical emotions and secured energetic applause and hollering\, and three curtain calls… Neset’s quintet and the London Sinfonietta meshed seamlessly\, each playing to their strengths\, creating a musical pairing that embodied the old but nevertheless valuable cliché that the whole was something more than the sum of its parts.” (London Jazz News) \n\n\n\nMarius Neset  Geyser \n\n\n\nMarius Neset  saxophonesIvo Neame  pianoJim Hart  vibraphone/marimba/percussionConor Chaplin  bass Anton Eger  drumsGeoffrey Paterson  conductorLondon Sinfonietta
