SUMMARY:"The Good Women" at Kensington & Chelsea Festival
DESCRIPTION:“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true queer love story. \n\n\n\nIt’s the 1960s\, the world is changing. Protesters take the streets against the Vietnam war\, hippies celebrate free love and a young band called “The Beatles” is rising to fame. But not in Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. \n\n\n\nBette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\nYou’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, you’ll meet two extraordinary women \n\n\n\n“The poignant two-hander depicts burgeoning love against a backdrop of political struggle. Simply staged\, the romcom plot balances witty humour\, social injustice & emancipation.” – Fringe Biscuit \n\n\n\n“This thoughtful glimpse into the difficulties faced by women in the 1960s is gently uplifting\, An encouragement to continue the fight for change.” – The British Theatre Guide

There will be an attendant in the foyer waiting to let visitors in. \n\n\n\nAbout this event: \n\n\n\nThe prevalence of media\, images\, and visual cultures saturate our collective psyche on a near-minute basis. We have become a culture inundated. Our phones alert us to groundbreaking news events daily as we open Instagram to consume others’ lives and are sold the world of excess. \n\n\n\nWe eagerly divulge into celebrity gossip\, following the conspiracies of every supermodel-turned-influencer. We have been born into the spectacle and have watched its demise. \n\n\n\nWe are no longer shocked\, bemused\, or excited. \n\n\n\nThe spectacle is dead. \n\n\n\nLong live the spectacle. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an exhibition featuring London-based artists and their response to the concept of the death of the Spectacle. \n\n\n\nThe opening night for the exhibition is Thursday\, 27 July\, from 18:00-21:00. The show will remain in this space Friday\, 28 July and Saturday\, 29 July\, from 10:00-17:00.

SUMMARY:CURRENT AFFAIRS + THE PLAN + GROSS MISCONDUCT
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRSTHE PLANGROSS MISCONDUCTWednesday 26 JulyThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £8.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/O2543ad5f210 \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRS are a band from Glasgow marrying 80s pop sensibilities with ferocious post-punk\, neatly navigating the line between new wave and goth. Though Joan Sweeney (ex-Rose McDowall’s Band\, Aggi Doom\, The Royal We) is a lifer\, Sebastian Ymai (Comidillo Tapes\, Pissy\, Anxiety) came from Chile via York\, recently relocating to Berlin in 2021\, and new member Gemma Fleet (The Wharves\, Order of the Toad\, Dancer) alongside Andrew Milk (Shopping\, Pink Pound) were persuaded to leave London for the ‘second city’ after touring through with previous bands. However\, Glasgow is the heart and hub of the band’s music\, and musical life and the place where the forthcoming album Off the Tongue (Tough Love) was solidified and produced.Written from within the world of crumbling services\, broken bonds and wounded spirits\, Off the Tongue rolls off an ecstatic rage\, filled with hope for you\, them and everyone else. It’s a rallying cry away from hopelessness\, forgiving your fears and laying them to waste. Their album holds a place for you to be angry and to be focused. In lieu of having anything else\, we’ve always got each other\, and an uncertain future is an open game for us too.https://currentaffairs.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nTHE PLAN is a continually evolving outfit which includes members who have previously appeared in bands like Wetdog\, Vic Godard and The Subway Sect\, Hot Silk Pockets\, Mathew Sawyer and The Ghosts\, Reverend Pike\, and Private Trousers. Sometimes described as post-punk\, they also pull from more diverse influences such as no wave\, garage\, and psych\, as well as hints of prog. Their songs often move in unexpected directions and are always pinned together by Rebecca Gillieron’s sometimes defiant/sometimes soft vocal melodies. After fine-tuning new songs to completion this year\, here’s a chance to hear material from their second album\, recently recorded by Toby Borrough from Pozi\, and being mixed as we write.https://theplan1.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nGROSS MISCONDUCT are a conceptually foggy\, bureaucratically sound landfill punk from South London. Featuring members of Killjoys\, MILKY\, Strong Arm and Surplus. FFO Exit Order\, The Cribs\, Be Your Own Pet and corporate telephone hold music. Fresh off probation\, mandatory training completed and ready for synergy. EP is upcoming\, check out their demo now!https://grossmisconduct69.bandcamp.com

From PhDs to healers to chefs to sexperts and more\, they have assembled to create a web of support that takes you from the life of convention and inertia into a life that’s liberated and filled with your unique purpose. If you like the status quo\, this is not a summit for you. The live workshops\, intensives\, and community meetups cover a variety of wellness topics that have often been deemed unconventional and taboo\, which is why reliable\, authoritative knowledge in these areas can be difficult to find until now. All the experts are respected leaders and authorities in their field\, making guidance on these sacred and oftentimes vulnerable subjects all the more impactful and trustworthy. Omnia makes learning about these areas of transformation accessible\, affordable\, and straightforward – they light the path back to one’s true self. \n\n\n\nAbout Omnia’s Founder\, Allison Mandell: She is the CEO and Founder of Omnia Network and has herself been burnt to a crisp working as an Executive Producer in television for 15 years\, focusing primarily on diverse and female-led content\, with emphasis on comedy\, adventure\, travel\, food\, and renovation television. When she wasn’t working\, she was completely devoted to her spiritual life and is no stranger to workshops in every area of spirituality\, sustainability\, and healing. By combining her skills from TV production with her love of workshops and transformative healing studies\, Omnia Network was the best way for her to engage both her heart and her mind in her life purpose. After recognizing that the systems in place would not support a healthy work/life balance\, and after reaching the pinnacle of her industry and feeling more depleted and unfulfilled than ever\, she recognized that it was time to build the very thing she needed: a safe community to unlearn oppressive structures so she could relearn who she really is and bring that essence into the world. And thus\, Omnia was born. Allison is a female leader not only in a gnarly\, heavily male-dominated television industry\, but she is also pioneering in making expert-led\, online learning for holistic wellness accessible. \n\n\n\nEvent Highlights: \n\n\n\nTransformative Keynote Presentations: Renowned experts and visionaries will share their insights\, experiences\, and strategies for transforming one’s life\, providing attendees with impactful knowledge and inspiration to make actionable changes that lead to a more authentic and meaningful life – that can begin today. \n\n\n\nDirect Expert Feedback: Participants can ask these groundbreaking experts direct questions on how to integrate different healing modalities into their life and get real-time responses – all for free. \n\n\n\nDiscover A Community: Connect with like-minded folks who want the same things you do – to change their lives in a way that provides space for one’s authentic purpose\, weirdness\, and joy. \n\n\n\nExclusive Access: Gain access to exclusive prerecorded workshops\, resources\, research\, and tools to help disrupt the disempowering patterns in one’s life and replace them with self-discovery and embodied aliveness. \n\n\n\nRegistration for The Self-Renewal Summit is now open; to learn more about the event\, explore the speakers\, and secure your spot\, visit http://www.omnianetwork.com.

SUMMARY:BARBARA MANNING + JOWE HEAD
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm & Cafe OTO present… \n\n\n\nBARBARA MANNINGJOWE HEADMonday 24 JulyCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL8pm | £12 | Tickets: https://www.cafeoto.co.uk/events/28th-day-barbara-manning/ \n\n\n\nBARBARA MANNING is an American indie rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. In addition to her solo career\, Manning has been active in a number of bands\, including 28th Day (with Cole Marquis)\, World of Pooh\, S.F. Seals and The Go-Luckys! She has also distinguished herself as an interpreter of other writers’ songs. Artists she has covered include The Bats (“Smoking Her Wings”)\, Richard Thompson (“The End of the Rainbow”)\, Jackson Browne (“These Days”)\, Portastatic (“Through With People”)\, and Amon Düül (“Marcus Leid”). The idiosyncratic but rewarding Barbara Manning is a little too spiky and odd to fit comfortably in the Lilith Fair crowd\, but her best work outshines those of her bigger-selling peers. Manning’s artistic restlessness and her tendency to jump in and out of bands and recording situations make it difficult to follow her career — her discography must be one of the most confusing in all of the ’90s indie scene — but it also makes her one of the most vital and interesting singer/songwriters of her era.https://barbaramanning.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nJOWE HEAD is a musician and artist from the Midlands of England\, now living in Hackney\, in east London. He started his musical career in his home town of Solihull with various school friends in 1972\, a project that came to be known as Swell Maps. This group emerged in the late 1970s\, are now known as a pioneer of what is now referred to as the Alternative Rock or Post-Punk scene. They set up their own independent record label and mixed Punk Rock with experimental and psychedelic sounds. Swell Maps released four singles and two albums in a brief but dramatic career\, that led to them topping the UK independent charts and influencing bands such as Sonic Youth\, Nirvana\, and Blur. When they broke up\, Jowe joined Television Personalities. Ten years with the TVPs saw Jowe making more influential records\, touring Europe regularly\, and playing in Japan and the USA.https://jowe-head.com/bio

SUMMARY:In A Field By A Bridge FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:A brand new and unique (free) London festival launches this July. \n\n\n\nSummer 2023 sees the launch of ‘In a Field by a Bridge’\, a weekend festival with a  unique backdrop. In a community park beside an international landmark\, this event inspires sustainable living and celebrates community action. \n\n\n\nFrom when the sun sits high over Tower Bridge until the last pink rays disappear behind London Bridge\, on grassy fields next to the Thames\, this free festival showcases the juxtaposition of incredible London landmarks alongside cityscape\, nature and one of the world’s great rivers. \n\n\n\nCelebrating everything that Potters Fields Park and the London Bridge neighbourhood have to offer; merging green spaces\, evocative history\, wonderful architecture\, a diverse residential community\, and thriving businesses – this is one of London’s most culturally innovative\, sustainable and exciting districts. In a Field by a Bridge is the first opportunity to showcase what London Bridge has to offer as a leading environmentally-focused business district\, highlighting the transition to a carbon-neutral economy\, low-impact living and healthy lifestyles. The impact of this festival on the local community is aimed to create positive social and economic longevity far beyond this launch weekend. \n\n\n\n“Great festivals have meaning and a purpose  and  a team that means it\, and if you can add an amazing location\, then BINGO!\, In a Field by a Bridge has the aim to be an exemplary sustainable festival and in Team London Bridge\, a festival funder that “means it”.  \n\n\n\nThe location is nothing short of spectacular. Potters Fields is a beautifully maintained public green space overlooking the Thames and with views to the adjacent Tower Bridge\, London Bridge\, and The Tower of London. Across Tooley Street\, the festival’s second green space  St. John’s Churchyard\, is a wonderful community park that will play host to the Beyond Food-led “Feast in a Field“ initiative\, where local “legends in their own kitchen” will allow Londoners and visitors from all around the UK and the world to get a taste of delicacies that thus far only their families have been able to enjoy. \n\n\n\nWe are aiming to make In a Field by a Bridge a  must-attend annual event.  I would ensure you can  say you were there at that first one in July 2023 !” \n\n\n\nWayne Hemingway\, HemingwayDesign \n\n\n\nThis free festival aims to enable and encourage education and action on greener living through creative programming. It’s jam-packed with an incredible showcase of live performances\, interactive workshops\, film screenings\, architectural tours\, activities for all the family\, and more. \n\n\n\nThe full programme coming soon\, but here’s a sneak peek for now…. \n\n\n\n\nKeith Brymer Jones and Clayground mass participatory clay workshop celebrating the history of pottery-making in the area\n\n\n\nSocial Enterprise Beyond Food Community Feast in a Field\n\n\n\nProgramme of workshops\, talks & walks curated by London National Park City and its network of park rangers\n\n\n\nTopical talks programme with headline panellists\n\n\n\nLocal businesses & resident involvement\n\n\n\nFilm screenings\n\n\n\nSuitcase Sale\n\n\n\nDesigners and makers market\n\n\n\nStreet food & drink\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nMusic & Entertainment on a pedal-powered stage.\n\n\n\n\n——————————– \n\n\n\nFor a number of years\, the London Bridge community has been addressing global problems with local commitments. Matching the ambition of Southwark Council and the Mayor of London\, local businesses have committed to a first-of-its-kind route map with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and dramatically decreasing the 130\,000 tonnes of CO2e they produce annually – an output equivalent to powering 25\,295 homes a year. In a Field by a Bridge will highlight ways we can collectively and individually decarbonise and instil new ideas for low-carbon living into our daily routines.  \n\n\n\n“In a Field by a Bridge will mark the start of the summer for many of us. Alongside HemingwayDesign\, we have curated two days of riverside festivities for the curious\, creative and conscientious who just like to have a good time! Everything has been planned with sustainability in mind.  Come along and discover Feast in a Field – our community cookout\, experience making ceramics with Keith Brymer Jones of BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down\, and find a pre-loved bargain at the massive suitcase sale along the Thames. We hope to see In a Field By a Bridge become a regular fixture on London’s cultural calendar for many years.”   \n\n\n\nEllie Beedham\, Director of Arts\, Team London Bridge \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n“Access to green space and nature has never been more important to our busy urban lives. With our award-winning parks\, commitment to sustainability\, passion for our area and pride in our community\, we’re excited to host the first In a Field by a Bridge festival.  We can’t wait to share two days of fun and inspiring activities with visitors from around the world and the corner.” \n\n\n\nSheila Benjamin\, Chief Executive of Potters Fields Park Management Trust \n\n\n\n“I am pleased and excited to be involved in this community event ‘In a Field by a Bridge’. It brings together the history of Potters Field on the banks of the Thames in the heart of London whilst creating an event that is accessible to the local community and beyond. Bringing historic places back to life through creativity is arguably the best way to highlight our past and recognise its significance for future generations.“ \n\n\n\nKeith Brymer Jones\, ceramics and homeware designer.  \n\n\n\n“We’re incredibly excited to be curating the London National Park City Zone at the first ever In A Field By A Bridge festival this summer\, not least because it coincides with the 4th anniversary of London becoming the world’s first National Park City. There will be events and activities galore\, all celebrating urban nature and the outdoors\, and we can’t wait to see you all there.” \n\n\n\nMark Cridge\, Executive Director\, London National Park City \n\n\n\n“Beyond Food Foundation and Brigade Bar+Kitchen have been in The Fire Station on Tooley Street for over a decade. Brigade is a social enterprise restaurant that cooks with live fire and smokes produce on site. Beyond Food is a charity that has helped over 7000 individuals whose lives have unravelled to regain confidence and independence. We have also supported over 2000 people to gain professional skills\, which have taken many to work in the hospitality industry. We are delighted to be involved in the community-focused event ‘In a Field by a Bridge’\, helping us to support and engage in our local community\, placing a spotlight on the work of our charity.” \n\n\n\nJo Littman\, Beyond Food \n\n\n\n“It was an enticing invitation from Wayne Hemingway to work on this inaugural festival on the site of such rich ceramics history. The offer to develop a large-scale participatory installation to animate the space with members of the public\, many of whom have never touched clay before\, goes to the heart of Clayground Collective’s ethos to bring art practice through clay to all.” \n\n\n\nCo-Directors Duncan Hooson\, Claire West & Julia Rowntree\, Clayground Collective \n\n\n\nIn a Field by a Bridge is just a short walk from London Bridge Station and the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers river bus service and is set amid the attractions of the London Bridge area with its cafes\, restaurants and theatres.  \n\n\n\nI: @inafieldbyabridge \n\n\n\nT: @inafieldfest

SUMMARY:Reconstruction of Occupation + Extended introduction by Dr Thomas Lorman
DESCRIPTION:A masterful cinematic adventure of a truly forensic nature that uses newly discovered footage to provide a unique perspective on the 1968 military invasion of Czechoslovakia and its aftermath. \n\n\n\nThe discovery of 3 ½ hours of previously unseen\, professionally shot footage of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia that had been sitting in a garage for more than 40 years triggered a project reconstructing events that took place 55 years ago. Director Jan Sikl\, known for his meticulous work with private family film archives\, used an open call broadcast on Czech Television to trace the people’s identities and locations depicted in the footage and acquire further authentic film material.  Memories of specific events spring to life\, and what starts out as an investigation gradually becomes a reflection of how a historical moment has imprinted itself on us all.  The resulting film combines found professional and amateur footage with 18 interviews with those both behind and in front of the camera during that time while documenting Sikl‘s investigative work. Using a lip-reading expert to decipher what is being said in the silent footage and travelling to visit people and locations across the whole country\, Sikl provides a new perspective on these historical events\, putting a human face on the invasion and its aftermath while creating a specific form of social memory. \n\n\n\nJan Šikl\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia 2021\, 95’  \n\n\n\nPremiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2021  \n\n\n\nThe winner of the Best History Documentary Award at the Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nExtended introduction by Dr Thomas Lorman \n\n\n\nThomas Lorman is a lecturer (teaching) in central European history at UCL’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES)\, where he has been teaching and researching since 2010. His most recent publications are The Making of the Slovak People’s Party. Religion\, Nationalism\, and the Culture War in Early 20th-Century Europe (Bloomsbury\, 2020) and A History of the Hungarian Constitution: Law\, Government and Political Culture in Central Europe (Bloomsbury\, 2020)\, which he co-edited with Ferenc Hörcher. Written for Britain’s great cathedrals\, the work is noted for inviting engaged active listening in an architecturally beautiful environment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nJuliette Pochin and Lemn Sissay collaborated on a new piece for chamber orchestra and semi-Chorus\, Let There Be Peace which was originally commissioned for the 2020 Brighton Festival. Due to the pandemic\, it featured as part of the Brighton Festival online that year. This will be its first live performance.\n\n \n\nThe concert concludes with Mozart’s Requiem which was famously completed after his death by his pupil\, Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Uniquely for this performance\, the Sanctus and Benedictus\, thought to be exclusively the work of Süssmayr\, will be substituted for movements written by Mozart himself.
