SUMMARY:South London Previews Festival: Sophie Duker & Rob Auton
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning comedians Sophie Duker and Rob Auton in a comedy double bill as they work up their new shows ahead of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. \nSophie Duker\nHot comedy weirdo\, Sophie Duker\, hits Streatham to rustle up a new hour of comedy fire for 2024. What\, like it’s hard? All this race-baiter / big ol’ freak needs is a working microphone\, a tequila-based cocktail\, and a captive audience – honey\, that’s you. \n‘An incomparable stand-up voice of our time’ – Voice Magazine\n‘Laugh-out loud funny’ – The Telegraph \nRob Auton\nThis is a show about eyes when they are open and eyes when they are shut. With this show I wanted to explore what I could do to myself and others with language when eyes are open and when they are shut. After writing ten shows on specific themes including the colour yellow in ‘The Yellow Show’\, the sky in ‘The Sky Show’ and myself in ‘The Rob Auton Show’ I wanted to think about what makes me open my eyes and what makes me shut my eyes. The show will involve the audience shutting their eyes and opening their eyes at specific points. -Rob Auton \n“A genuine original” – Guardian\n“Brilliant” – Stewart Lee\n“One of my absolute favourites” – Daniel Kitson\n“Rob Auton is the mother freaking greatest” – James Acaster

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Waxing Crescent Moon with artist Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:As we approach July’s regenerative waxing moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the month ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process\, of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self. \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with frankincense – woody\, fresh and uplifting. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. \nIn this two hour workshop we will explore the mysteries of plants through drawing\, painting\, and meditative observations\, we will go beyond the confines of the ordinary. We’ll take a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene Rose tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University\, and recently delivered the course Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Project Space\, as well as sharing insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants: \n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus we were able to connect with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. – participant \n“A very naturally held space offering freedom to be intuitive\, and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a full whole\, rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.” – participant \nThe workshop will take place amidst the thought-provoking exhibition Thick\, Stretchy\, Sticky Space at IMT Gallery\, features digital paintings and video works by emerging multidisciplinary artist Fran Hayes that delve into speculative landscapes\, inspired by damaged ecologies\, science-fiction\, and the uncanny; all viewed through a profoundly human lens. \nThis workshop is designed for individuals who seek to deepen their connection with nature and explore their creative potential. No prior experience is required – just an open heart and a curious mind. While drawing materials will be provided\, feel free to bring your own sketchbooks and preferred materials to enhance your experience. \nFree spaces are available for Tower Hamlets residents\, courtesy of support from Tower Hamlets Community Chest. \nReserve your spot now – space is limited!

SUMMARY:Restless // A one hour punk theatre gig
DESCRIPTION:‘Appropriately furious…a howl against abuse that somehow everyone can sing along to‘ – audience member \nAre you angry? This band is angry. Come as you are\, and bring anyone with you who needs an outlet to shout at the sky. Restless might be the most necessary hour in your week. \nRestless brings together the loose ends of a rage that we feel but don’t quite know what to do with and weaves it into a collective chord of F*** YOU\, DO SOMETHING. \nKind of like a guided meditation\, except if it had been made by The Sex Pistols and shouted through loudhailers. \nThe music pulls no punches; it’s raw and visceral and urgent\, but crafted too – both in the lyrics (simultaneously catchy and rich) and the skill of the performers including the co-composers Quinta (Collectress\, Bat For Lashes) and the inimitable Thomas Johnson. \nAll the staples of classic 70s punk are here – thumping drums\, driving riffs\, sweary vocals smashed through fuzzing amps – along with some folkier finesse from fiddles and intricate solos. \nBut the real power comes from where the music takes the room. The set list leads the audience through a building narrative from abuse\, to anger and\, ultimately\, action – all informed by the direct experiences of frontwoman and lyricist Viv Gordon. \n‘I didn’t know how much I needed that. It was as angry as I am but then joyous and beautiful all at the same time. I’m crying. It’s gonna take me a while to come down’ – audience member \n–things to know– \n\nRestless is created\, convened and performed by Viv Gordon\, a campaigner & survivor-activist grounded in her lived experience of Child Sexual Abuse\nThis is a safer space for anyone aged 18 + with considerate lighting\, relaxed environment and wellbeing support available\nThis is a Work in Progress Sharing. It is a supportive event about testing new work.\nIt’s f***ing brilliant\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS \nThursday 11th July\nMorley College\, Westminster Bridge Road\, London SE1 7HT\nTimings: Doors 7pm. Gig 7.30-8.30pm. Venue closes 9pm.\nAge 18 +

SUMMARY:Threads That Tie Us: An Oshwal Odyssey – UK Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Threads That Tie Us: An Oshwal Odyssey is a documentary that traces the 2\,500 year long journey of the Halari Oshwals\, a small community from India who have since dispersed around the world. In this film\, driven by a deep connection to her roots\, Bindu Shah navigates the scattered diaspora throughout Canada\, India\, Kenya\, and the United Kingdom. Each emigrant of the community becomes a storyteller\, creating microcosms of Halari Oshwal life. Ideas of faith\, spirituality\, and business-centric lifestyles intersect in this global story. Yet\, against the backdrop of globalization\, the film delicately raises questions that resonate with universal themes of dying languages and cultural heritage. This documentary asks whether this community can persevere amid geographical distances and age-old rules. As an exploration of identity\, communal history\, and sacred pacts\, this documentary seeks to find out at what lengths this community can go to sustain their unity.

SUMMARY:Seascapes – Solo Exhibition by Liz Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:‘Seascapes’ is a solo exhibition by Liz Gilbert and reflects the significance of time spent by and in water. The works reflect the artist’s life journey in metaphorical expressions informed by childhood memories of time spent on the beach\, a career trajectory taking in theatre\, TV and film\, and the experience of distance ocean swimming. \nGilbert captures a sense of melancholy and nostalgia on paper\, in photography and film. Small sketches created en plein air\, capturing memories of place\, inform drawings\, prints\, and oil paintings\, measuring time not by the hands on a clock but by the turning tide. \n“To work plein air\, one needs to be alert\, seeing intently\, moving pastel and charcoal dust into satisfactory resting places on a surface is a collaboration of seeing – thinking – drawing- touch and breathing with empathy.” \nMeeting the challenge as the wind moves clouds\, light changes\, and rain comes in requires a well-honed skill acquired over many years of experimenting from dawn to dusk. The reward is a sense of freedom akin to that of swimming in open water—a sense of timeless absorption. \nGilbert holds an MA in Fine Art Drawing from Wimbledon School of Art and has consistently exhibited in London and St. Ives\, Cornwall. Her artwork is in collections across the UK\, Europe\, and the USA. \n‘Seascapes ‘is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects\, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through group and solo exhibitions. \nEstablished in 2017 by mixed-media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and painter Annamarie Dzendrowskyj\, the collective curates exhibitions centred around themes pertinent to contemporary artistic practice and in response to exhibition spaces that surpass the idea of the white cube.

DESCRIPTION:They’re on the same page. It’s just sex. It doesn’t have to be complicated. \nAnyway\, it wouldn’t work. He hates kissing in the morning. She killed her guinea pigs. He doesn’t speak to his dad. \nThey’re different people. \nIt’s just sex. \n“I’m just worried because I think what I’m being turned on by is the fact that you’re imagining a stable future with me\, whereas what you’re being turned on by is the potential potency of your own sperm.” \nA lyrical\, charged\, sharply observed and genuinely erotic two-hander\, After Sex follows the trajectory of a couple\, told almost entirely through post-coital scenes. It’s about how the sex we have can change us: a love-song to connection and to people’s capacity for changing each other’s lives.
