SUMMARY:The Zombies: Celebrating 60 Years On Tape
DESCRIPTION:THE ZOMBIES Celebrating 60 Years On Tape From “She’s Not There” to “Different Game” Plus Very Special Guests \n\n\n\nThe 2024 Tour band members are the current line-up of: Rod Argent (Keys and vocals) Colin Blunstone (Lead Vocals)\, Steve Rodford (Drums)\, Tom Toomey (Guitar) & Søren Koch (Bass) \n\n\n\nThe Zombies formed in the historic Cathedral city of St Albans in 1961 with Argent and Blunstone\, alongside Chris White (Bass)\, Paul Atkinson (Guitar) and Hugh Grundy (drums).  Their first single ‘She’s Not There’ on Decca Records\, rocketed to the top of the charts in 1964 on both sides of the pond. They were the second UK band following The Beatles to score a #1 hit in America\, infiltrating the airwaves with sophisticated melodies\, breathy vocals\, choral back-up harmonies and jazzy keyboard riffs. The original line-up disbanded just prior to achieving their greatest success – the worldwide chart-topping single ‘Time of the Season’\, from their swan-song album ‘Odessey and Oracle’\, ranked in the Top 100 of Rolling Stone’s ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time.’  To this day\, generations of new bands have cited The Zombies’ work as pop touchstones\, and the band continues to be embraced by new generations of fans.

SUMMARY:Gustav Holst's Operetta - The Idea
DESCRIPTION:Discover the delight of this little known\, family fun\, theatrical operetta\, which makes a welcome return after it’s UK premier during lockdown. The Prime Minister has had an Idea….\nThis early and tuneful composition by English composer Gustav Holst is an unexpected far throw from his best known orchestral suite The Planets. Holst’s collaboration with his 22 year old contemporary of The Royal College of Music Fritz B Hart fuses a sharp\, witty and satirical libretto\, Holst’s catchy tunes\, inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan\, woven into a joyful fresh new arrangement by Patrick Vincent.\nIn a witty and surreal adapted staging by director Paula Chitty. The Prime Minister of this great and glorious country interrupts the wacky court of a rambling king and clown faced queen to announce his great Idea. \n**** ReviewsGate. It is performed and sung with relish – Valaria Perboni has has a nicely acid touch as HM and John Stivey bumbles to the manner born as the PM – by the entire cast. It is a rare delight stagedwith wit -director Chitty did the Costume and set design – and deserves to pop up all over place on the fringe and around after this short season. And the relevance to today needs no pointing up. \n**** LondonTheatre1 Paula Chitty’s direction of this unexpected piece is taut and witty\, with John Stivey and Valeria Perboni doing that ongoing English dance of P.M. and H.M. with edge and deftness.\nIrrational Theatre specialises in the Best of British opera and plays – librettists\, composers and playwrights.

SUMMARY:Attila Bartis: The End | Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Literary meet and greet with EBRD Literary Prize 2024 nominee Attila Bartis featuring his work of prose: THE END\nAuthor Attila Bartis and translator Judith Sollosy discuss the recently published The End with moderator Jozefina Komporaly.\n“The story of a photographer who… No. The story of a man who… No. The story of a love affair that… Or the story of several love affairs that taken together… Or the story of a nation that… Ah\, forget it. This novel offers everything that a novel can possibly offer: truth\, sincerity\, atmosphere\, story. And something else besides that fans of Attila Bartis are familiar with: the irresistible sweep of emotions that carry you with it and won’t let you go. Whether readers consider András Szabad a maniac or fall helplessly in love with him\, either way\, they will feel that life is worth living only as he lives it\, with this intensity. We call a character like him a hero. We are bound to go along with him.” (István Kemény)

SUMMARY:Jazz on the Tea Lawn 2024: Carol Grimes and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Carol Grimes is back! Join us on the Tea Lawn for a very special edition of Jazz in the House…\nCarol Grimes is a British singer\, songwriter\, poet and author\, a towering presence in the UK music scene; from busking in the streets as a teenager\, singing blues and Jazz\, to touring internationally with the contemporary classical group The Shout and her two of her solo albums in Nashville and Memphis  it is safe to say Carol is a truly genre-busting artist. Having turned to jazz and blues\, her music embraces drama\, love – music for night people. \nProgrammed by Blow the Fuse\, who also feature on guitar (Deirdre Cartwright) and bass (Alison Rayner)! \nPerformers \nCarol Grimes – Vocals \nSteve Lodder – Piano \nDeirdre Cartwright – Guitar \nAlison Rayner – Bass \nWinston Clifford – Drums \n  \nBooking information \nThis performance will take place on the Tea Lawn at the back of Lauderdale House. \nIf you would like to sit together\, please book together\, as this allows us to assign each booking a socially distanced space. \nChairs will not be provided\, so please bring either a picnic blanket or a chair to make yourself comfortable. Audience members with chairs will be seated behind those on the ground to make sure that everyone has a good view. If you are booking as a group\, the whole group will need to be on chairs or on blankets rather than a mixture of the two. \nWe have a limited number of picnic tables and benches available as group tickets – book these early to avoid disappointment. \nIf you have a disability or any special requirements please get in touch with us so that we can best accommodate you. \n  \nWeather\nThe performance will continue regardless of the weather unless unsafe. Please plan for all eventualities and remember to bring a waterproof layer and a warm jumper. We prefer waterproofs to umbrellas because umbrellas can obstruct views. Don’t forget that if you are on a blanket the ground may be wet\, so make sure you have a blanket with a waterproof side or bring a plastic sheet. There are no refunds for shows cancelled due to the weather. \n  \nFood and Drink\nThe cafe/bar will be open selling light snacks and drinks before the performance starts and during the interval. \nYou are also welcome to bring your own picnic to enjoy on the Tea Lawn as you watch the performance. \n  \nTickets\nTea Lawn £15.50per person \nUnwaged Concession £12.50 (This concession applies to guests with disabilities and those not in work. SUMMARY:Hejira – Celebrating Joni Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:‘Hejira’ is a 7-piece band set up to celebrate and honour the masterpiece works of Joni Mitchell\, mostly from the late ‘70s. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’\, ‘Hejira’\, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ (regarded as her ‘jazz period’)\, Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny\, Mays\, Brecker\, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded\, producing the outstanding live album\, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians\, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has – in her own way – assimilated the poise\, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals\, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. Expect an evening of the ‘great’ songs from Mitchell’s back catalogue\, such as ‘Amelia’\, ‘Woodstock’\, ‘A Case Of You’\, ’Song For Sharon’\, ‘Edith And The Kingpin’ etc! \nThe band comprises of: \nHattie Whitehead ~ vocals & guitar \nOllie Weston ~ tenor & soprano saxophones \nChris Eldred ~ keyboards \nPete Oxley ~ guitar \nDave Jones ~ bass \nRick Finlay ~ drums \nMarc Cecil ~ percussion \nSince their formation less than a year ago\, the band has been a tremendous success\, with sold out shows\, standing ovations\, a total of over 70K views on their YouTube channel with more than 1\,200 enthusiastic comments and audience reviews. \n\nThursday 13th June at 7.30pm\nRunning time: 50 minutes each half with a 20-minute interval\nTicket Prices: £25 (Gen) & £22.50 (Concs)\n\n\nAudience comments: \n“Almost brought to tears so incredible!”\n“Shadows and Light is far and away the crowning glory of Joni’s discography. And this is a glowing\,\nwonderful tribute. Bravi!”\n“What a superb rendition of Coyote. Easily the best version (next to JMs) in yt. Thanks.”\n“As a lifelong worshipper of the greatest songwriter that has ever lived\, Joni Mitchell\, I can honestly\nsay this is the best rendition next to the Goddess herself\, I have ever heard… excellent\, excellent\,\nexcellent!”\n“Just watched them tonight…at Gothforth…totally astonishing performance from the band…to sit\nback and hear those beautiful layers of sound wash over…wonderful vocal performance…”\n“I had the pleasure of seeing the band live at Peggy’s Skylight – they were absolutely stunning. It\ntakes special musicians to fill the shoes of Pastorious\, Metheney et al but these guys are top drawer\nand make it all sound effortless.”\n“This is how you celebrate another artist’s creation. Reverent\, beautiful\, masterful and respectful.”\n“Good lord that was stunning! To do justice to Joni Mitchell’s incredibly personal and poignant Hejira\ntakes artistry\, taste and serious chops. What a fabulous band\, what a fabulous singer!”\n“This band is phenomenal. Standing ovations abound at their recent Colchester concert. Definitely a\nmust see performance and excellent musicianship!” \n

SUMMARY:Mark James - VIVID
DESCRIPTION:Cris Contini Contemporary is delighted to announce the opening of their new London Gallery with VIVID\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by British artist Mark James. \n\n\n\n\nBest known for FREEZE (1993)\, the first TV documentary about Damien Hirst and the YBA generation\, James originally trained at Goldsmiths and has continued to pursue painting alongside creating numerous critically acclaimed TV and feature documentaries on music and the arts. James now divides his time between filmmaking and painting\, and the exhibition at Cris Contini is his debut solo exhibition. \n\nPhotography\, architecture\, music\, colour\, and movement are all part of the fundamental DNA of James’ practice\, conjuring joyful and dynamic spaces of colour\, light\, and movement. Waldemar Januszczak\, the Art Critic of The Sunday Times\, has described James’ paintings as “Pop Suprematism.” James’ paintings are structured to create juxtapositions of shape\, space\, and colour\, evoking a mid-century aesthetic of modernism and a kind of future set in the past. \nJames comments\, “Composers often start with a single note\, or chord\, which becomes the defining sound of the song from which all the other notes flow. My painting process is very similar to this music analogy. It’s always tricky starting the process\, but once I apply the first colour to the canvas\, others follow in reaction”. \nOften created in response to music\, James’ paintings frequently reference the artist’s wide-ranging playlist in their titles\, from ‘Summer Wind’ to ‘Fly With Me’. James comments\, “Although the paintings aren’t inspired by specific songs\, I use song titles to name my paintings by selecting music which I feel most closely resonates with each painting. I particularly like music from the jazz /swing era and a number of people have commented that the paintings have a kind of jazz ‘vibe’. \nJames’ work is held in numerous high-profile private collections. It is prominently featured in the celebrated Groucho alongside many of his YBA peers and Sir Michael Craig-Martin\, the esteemed British artist whom James worked with as a trusted studio assistant for many years.
