SUMMARY:Against All Odds - Free Arts Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A solo art exhibition of bronze sculpture and graphite drawings by the award-winning international sculptor Teresa Wells MRSS. Teresa’s work is inspired by the question\, “How do Humans Behave?” \n\n\n\nShe takes inspiration from the ability of mankind to survive in the face of adversity (Against All Odds).  Her forms evoke unease and tension as she balances each piece on edge.  \n\n\n\nInfluenced by a moral upbringing\, she challenges a contemporary expectation of perfection to celebrate that our whole selves\, including flaws\, make us incredible.

SUMMARY:Cindy + Index For Working Musik
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCINDYINDEX FOR WORKING MUSIKWednesday 26 AprilThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £8.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/z790b084119e \n\n\n\nCINDY is a band built around the singing and guitar playing of Karina Gill\, who she self-nurtured after finding an abandoned Squier Strat in her San Francisco apartment basement. Her intrigue soon grew into the band that is Cindy\, who have found a worldwide following in their slow-moving\, dream-pop world that shrouds Gill’s songs thanks to support from model-independent labels Mt. St. Mtn. [USA] and Tough Love Records [UK].Cindy’s fourth LP\, Why Not Now? It will be released this April. The music captured is simply out of necessity and introverted in delivery\, but the songs contain vivid worlds and are quietly ambitious. With this latest batch\, Gill pulled the process of making Cindy’s music even more inward. “Some of these songs were recorded as demos alone in my basement. I think that process set the tone for the record…Maybe it set up a kind of starkness\,” she says. While the dream-pop tag is probably still relevant\, this isn’t an algorithm-fed genre ambience. Gill’s vocal/lyrical presence can be as gently momentous as Leonard Cohen’s or as intellectually potent as any ’79-’80 Rough Trade post-punk. Cindy’s Why Not Now? is that muffled street symphony inside a passing daydream.https://cindytheband.bandcamp.com/album/1-2 \n\n\n\nINDEX FOR WORKING MUSIK released their debut album ’Dragging the Needlework for the Kids at Uphole’ via Tough Love. 35 minutes of repeat phrased guitars\, slow-clipped drums and dulcet vocals where the recurring landscape is the desert. Reel-to-reel-loops of Afghan music compete with the found sound overlays of voices recorded at the queue of the pharmacy and drum machines borrowed from Spanish heroes\, channelling both far-off climes and snippets from a closer reality. It’s a strange psychic brew\, built of imagined mysticism and domestic realities\, of fever dreams and days that stretched into weeks of months.https://indexforworkingmusik.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Internment during the First World War. The Global German Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of the new exhibition at the German Historical Institute London on ‘Internment during the First World War. The Global German Experience’. \n\n\n\n\nDuring the First World War\, German civilians were interned as ‘enemy aliens’ in British Empire locations worldwide. The biggest internment camp was Knockaloe on the Isle of Man\, holding 22\,000 prisoners. British citizens\, white and non-white\, were interned in the Ruhleben camp near Berlin as a retaliatory measure\, bringing the global experience of internment back to the German home front as well and for civilian internees across the world\, long periods of isolation caused mental health problems in the form of the ‘barbed wire disease’. Humanitarian support came from the Spanish and the Swiss governments\, as well as the Red Cross. The exhibition focuses on these global themes\, opening up new perspectives and formats for presenting the history of wartime internment. Alongside eighteen panels\, a Virtual Reality Experience will give viewers an immersive experience of Fort Napier Camp in South Africa. \nSymposium and exhibition opening: \n5.00 – 5.05 Welcome GHIL\, Christina von Hodenberg \n5.05 – 5.15 Internment in the British Empire\, Panikos Panayi \n5.15 – 5.25 Race and Internment: the Ruhleben camp near Berlin\, Michelle Kiessling \n5.25 – 5.35 Mental Health and Internment\, Matthew Stibbe \n5.35 – 5.45 Internment in Switzerland\, Susan Barton \n5.45 – 5.55 Spanish humanitarian efforts\, Marina Perez de Arcos \n5.55 – 6.00 Presenting internment in Virtual Reality\, Stefan Manz\, Paul Long \n6.00 – 6.30 Discussion \n6.30 – 8.00 Exhibition viewing and Virtual Reality demonstration \nBehind the Wire and Virtual Reality Experience exhibition will be shown in the German Historical Institute London until 30 June 2023. SUMMARY:Mary Lattimore + Leafcutter John
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nMARY LATTIMORELEAFCUTTER JOHNFriday  21 AprilSt John on Bethnal Green\, 200 Cambridge Heath Rd\, London\, E2 9PA7.30pm | £13 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/K76f761d465c \n\n\n\nMARY LATTIMORE is a harpist and composer living in Los Angeles. She experiments with her Lyon and Healy Concert Grand harp and effects. Her solo debut\, The Withdrawing Room\, was released in 2013 on Desire Path Recordings. Lattimore also writes harp parts for songs and recordings\, performing and recording with such great artists as Meg Baird\, Thurston Moore\, Sharon Van Etten\, Jarvis Cocker\, Kurt Vile\, Steve Gunn\, Ed Askew and Fursaxa. Her debut solo record for Ghostly International\, ‘At The Dam’\, was recorded during stops along a road trip across America and released in March 2016. The next year\, she compiled sounds from her past life in Philadelphia for a cassette tape titled ‘Collected Pieces’. Released in May 2018 to acclaim from the likes of NPR\, Pitchfork\, and The New Yorker\, Lattimore’s next album ‘Hundreds of Days’ presented an expression of mystified gratitude for the natural world. She capped off the banner year — which included international tours with Iceage and Kurt Vile\, a performance with Harold Budd at Big Ears Festival\, and an appearance on Billboard’s New Age charts — with two collaborative albums released on Three Lobed Recordings\, one with Meg Baird and the other with Mac McCaughan. \n\n\n\nLattimore’s most recent album ‘Silver Ladders’ (out 2020 on Ghostly)\, saw her arriving at her most confident work to date\, expanding her style of instrumental storytelling with the help of producer and guitarist Neil Halstead (Slowdive\, Mojave 3). Recorded in Halstead’s studio near an old English surf town\, the songs on ‘Silver Ladders’ reflect Lattimore’s vivid memories against the gloom and glimmer of the ocean.https://marylattimoreharpist.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nLEAFCUTTER JOHN grew up in Wakefield\, fascinated by sound. Still\, it wasn’t until halfway through his painting degree at the Norwich School of Art and Design that he discovered a computer he was using to write his dissertation could take him on new sonic adventures by recording and manipulating sound. His most recent work ‘Lockdown Patchwork’ was commissioned by HCMF and Leeds Art Gallery and used interview material\, publicly submitted field recordings\, and new music written by John. SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: Putin's Witnesses
DESCRIPTION:With Putin becoming one of the world’s most powerful leaders\, and the man responsible for the Ukrainian war\, Vitaly Mansky’s fly-on-the-wall documentary provides a vital witness account of Putin’s rise to power throwing considerable light on his personality and ideas. \n\n\n\nUkrainian-born Vitaly Mansky gained unprecedented access to Putin and his inner circle in the Kremlin in 1999 – 2000 when filming a documentary that would boost Putin’s electoral success for Russian TV. Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and war in the Donbas region\, Mansky revisited that footage to trace Putin’s motivations and thirst for power. In his rare\, up-close portrait of Putin\, featuring\, amongst others\, a heartwarming meeting with his teacher\, we get early glimpses of Putin’s casual ruthlessness\, emphasis on Soviet-style nationalism\, reluctance to account for political decisions\, and behind-the-scenes revelations. Mansky’s act of bearing witness allows us a better understanding of the machinations that enabled Putin to consolidate power in this pivotal period while questioning his role in Putin´s bid for power. A genuinely chilling time capsule with a strong relevance today. \n\n\n\nVitaly Mansky\, Latvia\, Switzerland\, Czech Republic 2018\, 102 mins\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nAdmission: £5 \n\n\n\nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:Poetry meets visual arts: Book launch with Pavla Melková and Antony Gormley
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the bilingual publication of The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Czech poet and architect Pavla Melková and leading British sculptor Antony Gormley meet on stage to continue an artistic dialogue that started six years ago in Prague when they first met\, and the idea of a joint book was born. In The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible Pavla\, Melková’s poetry meets Antony Gormley’s drawings\, circling the same centre and unfolding from the same horizon in their search for the essence of life\, to emerge in a common language. \n\n\n\nAntony Gormley’s images and a staged reading of Pavla Melková’s poems by translator and poet Joshua Mensch will accompany the launch of this bilingual edition. \n\n\n\nFollowed by audience Q&A and a book signing. \n\n\n\nPAVLA MELKOVÁ is a practising architect\, visual artist\, poet and writer who regularly lectures on art and architecture. Her widely-recognized architecture is visible throughout the Czech Republic\, where she has won numerous awards\, including Architect of the Year (2014)\, the Prague Mayor’s Prize (2012)\, and the National Prize for Architecture (2012). She has published seven books on architecture\, including most recently\, The Humanistic Role of Architecture (2016) and The Architecture of Reciprocity (2020). She is a regular contributor to professional architecture journals\, anthologies\, and collaborative works. Her two volumes of poetry include The Edges of the Day (2017) and Inner Time (2019). In 2012\, she founded the Office for Public Space at the Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR)\, which she headed until 2017. She is a member and vice-chair of the Gremial Council of IPR and is a partner at the architecture firm MCA atelier\, which she co-founded. In 2015\, she founded the course Concept and Interpretation at the Faculty of Architecture\, where she teaches. \n\n\n\nANTONY GORMLEY is widely acclaimed for his sculptures\, installations and public artworks investigating the human body’s relationship to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands about nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours\, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. A major solo exhibition of his work was presented at the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, in September 2019. Permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead\, England)\, Another Place (Crosby Beach\, England)\, Inside Australia (Lake Ballard\, Western Australia)\, Exposure (Lelystad\, The Netherlands) and Chord (MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA\, USA). \n\n\n\nGormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994\, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999\, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007\, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and a knight in the New Year’s Honours list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects\, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges\, Cambridge. Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003. \n\n\n\nJOSHUA MENSCH is a poet and translator based in the Czech Republic. He is the author of Because. A Lyric Memoir (W. W. Norton\, 20218). He has served as an editor of B O D Y since 2012. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible is a discourse between the languages of poetry and the visual arts. The book captures a dialogue between leading British sculptor Anthony Gormley and Czech poet Pavla Melková. The lines made by the words in the poems and lines of the drawings are traces that bring closer the shape of the essence – the essence of the world\, our lives\, relationships\, and situations. The strokes of the words of the poetry and the strokes of the lines of the drawings circle the same centre and unfold from the same horizon. When the marks cross paths\, the shape becomes more and more evident. Absorbed in the strokes and with developing awareness\, one mutual language emerges. This establishes the meaning of their encounter. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Pavla Melková and Antony Gormley\, Prague: Kant\, 2022\, English and Czech\, Hardback; 136 pages\, 245 × 165 mm\, ISBN 978-80-7437-376-3 \n\n\n\nCover image: The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible (book cover); Pavla Melková; Antony Gormley (photo: Lars Gundersen)
