SUMMARY:AI: Prompting Images of Digital Life
DESCRIPTION:With the recent emergence of image-generating AI systems such as DALL-E\, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney\, the task of generating images with computers has been remodelled as a text-based process known as ‘prompting’. \nPrompting involves instructing a pre-trained AI model to hallucinate images in reaction to the specifics of text-based inputs. Prompts dictate image style\, composition and genre to the extent that images generated using these systems often appear as weird pastiches\, with giveaway aesthetic signals – 8-fingered hands\, for example – that point to their artificial origins. \nWorkshop participants will experiment with trying to find the cracks in these systems\, using creative prompting to explore whether these systems really are the dawn of a new horizon\, offering the potential for breakthroughs in digital image-making beyond the offset of human labour. \nParticipants are required to bring their laptops. \nJames Irwin’s bio \nJames Irwin is an Artist\, PhD researcher at Kingston School of Art\, Lecturer at UAL and Digital Media Tutor at the Royal Academy Schools. He works with web technologies\, AI systems and digital sound and image to investigate the notion of a vital life force inherent within digital media. \nBy creating cognitive assemblages – made from a combination of networked digital hardware\, software and human wetware – his work builds from new materialist ideas around recentering the human\, undoing our role as autonomous individuals and pointing to the ways in which the production of subjectivity is offset to forces outside of our bodies; the posthuman is biological\, but also networked and dispersed through machines. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:1944: Home Fires | the idol and the thug
DESCRIPTION:Heartthrob Ivor Novello is the most famous songwriter of his day. He’s also in prison for fiddling with his petrol coupons. \n\n\n\nIvor’s forced to share a cell with 20-year-old Frankie Fraser\, the sadistic terror of London gangland. Fey matinee idol and psychopathic homophobe banged up together – what can possibly go wrong? The outcome will surprise you… \n\n\n\n🌈 Watch our trailer \n\n\n\nOn the way\, we get a fascinating light on the soft underbelly of the black market and the Blitz; a meditation on masculinity and ‘macho’; and perhaps a story of redemption and recovery? \n\n\n\nWith a cast of four singers and a trio of 2 saxophones and a harp\, this creates a unique sound world in which Novello’s own music plays a crucial\, climactic part. \n\n\n\n👥 A crowdfunded\, gay chamber opera. Find out how to help us \n\n\n\nTickets: £15\, £10 concessions (students\, 60+\, disabled persons) \n\n\n\nThe second performance\, after the world premiere on 3 September. \n\n\n\n🌈 Meet the team\n\n\n\nGay veterans Peter Scott–Presland and Robert Ely are writing 17 operas about gay history. For this premiere of the second opera in the cycle\, they’re joined by an array of young rising stars. Part of Tête-à-tête: The Opera Festival 2023 \n\n\n\n🎬 Watch last year’s opera for free – 1936: Fishing \n\n\n\n🥷 An (almost?) true story\n\n\n\nGangster Frankie Fraser was imprisoned for gruesome murders and alleged torture. His favourite pastime was pulling out teeth with a pair of pliers. \n\n\n\nHe claimed that he shared a cell with Ivor Novello\, who was the equivalent of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Elton John rolled into one. The gentle\, dreamy Ivor was convinced his theatre career was over\, and he had nothing to live for. \n\n\n\nYet Frankie had his own secret terror\, a threat that would reduce him to a shell of himself. Appallingly\, this was also a “conversion therapy” forced upon LGBTQ+ people. We were considered mentally ill at the time.

SUMMARY:WATER MACHINE + LASH + GROSS MISCONDUCT
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nWATER MACHINE\nLASH\nGROSS MISCONDUCT\nTuesday 5 September\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £7 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Lf7063042bcf \nWATER MACHINE is an office romance between Hando Morice (they/them)\, Flore de Hoog (she/her)\, Jimmy Gage (he/him) and Goda Ilgauskaitė (she/her). An unassuming supergroup formed out of Glasgow institutions including Goth GF\, Passion Pusher\, Brenda and Soursob\, their sound careens between punk\, country and alt-rock underpinned by the unique quality they call “Raw Liquid Power”. Following last year’s self-titled demo tape on Gold Mold Records\, the four-piece will release their highly-anticipated first studio effort ‘Raw Liquid Power’ on Upset The Rhythm on August 4th. \nThe EP opens with a menacing\, modulating synth melody. Gage’s guitar enters with a mighty bend before breaking into the chugging rhythm of ‘Water Machine Pt. 2’. This timely reminder to refill your water bottle – “don’t be late\, hydrate!” less a wellness mantra than a threat – builds to a spacey outro with flashes of the art-punk weirdness of Suburban Lawns. ‘Stilettos’ marches on indignantly with a spiky riff punctuated by Ilgauskaitė’s cowbells. Staccato talk-singing tells a playful tale of stray cats following you home\, but belies a darker subtext as the breakdown gives way to paranoid duelling guitars evoking The Fire Engines. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/raw-liquid-power \nLASH are a new group featuring members of Es\, Suep\, Findom & Sealings. New Wave with a psychodynamic edge; Neuro-Romantic if you will. Think Pylon\, AC Marias\, Pink Industry style lamented & mutated pop music. \nGROSS MISCONDUCT are a conceptually foggy\, bureaucratically sound landfill punk band from South London. Featuring members of Killjoys\, MILKY\, Strong Arm and Surplus. FFO Exit Order\, The Cribs\, Be Your Own Pet and corporate telephone hold music. Fresh off probation\, mandatory training completed and ready for synergy. Check out their new EP and demo now!\nhttps://grossmisconduct69.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:1944: Home Fires | world premiere
Find out how to help us \n\n\n\nTickets: £15 or £5\, pay what you can. \n\n\n\nWe also have a second performance on 6 September. \n\n\n\nWheelchair access: please contact the venue in advance for a step-free route \n\n\n\n🌈 Meet the team\n\n\n\nGay veterans Peter Scott–Presland and Robert Ely are writing 17 operas about gay history. The gentle\, dreamy Ivor was convinced his theatre career was over and he had nothing to live for. \n\n\n\nYet Frankie had his own secret terror\, a threat that would reduce him to a shell of himself. Appallingly\, this was also a “conversion therapy” forced upon LGBTQ+ people. We were considered mentally ill at the time.

SUMMARY:Ed Byrne: Tragedy Plus Time
DESCRIPTION:One of the UK’s favourite TV household names returns to the stage with a brand-new show as he heads on the road in autumn. \n\n\n\nFrom the quote attributed to Mark Twain\, humour is defined as Tragedy Plus Time. Come and join one of our leading laugh specialists as he tests that formula by mining the most tragic event in his life for laughs. \n\n\n\nWith his TV career now in its third decade\, Ed has regularly appeared on the likes of QI\, Mock The Week\, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled\, The Pilgrimage\, Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay\, Dara & Ed’s Big Adventure\, The Graham Norton Show and Have I Got News For You\, as well as hosting Live At The Apollo and Comic Relief Bake Off. He was recently seen as a contestant on BBC One’s Celebrity Best Home Cook (where he made it to show 5 out of 8 – not bad!)\, and he has also won (yes\, won!) celebrity versions of both The Chase and Pointless! \n\n\n\nKnown for his passion for the outdoors (hill walking and mountaineering are major hobbies)\, Ed can be seen turning his presenting skills to factual broadcasting in BBC Two’s Volcano Live\, World’s Most Dangerous Roads(where he spent two weeks driving through Siberia) and Into The Wild with Gordon Buchanan. \n\n\n\nWith legions of fans both in the UK and abroad\, Ed remains the observational stand-up to see.

SUMMARY:Lower Marsh Lates…At The Movies
DESCRIPTION:Lower Marsh Lates… At The Movies is a new monthly (and free) open-air cinema experience in Waterloo that will screen the best of Sing-A-Long films.\n\n\n\n\n\nThese outdoor events will capture the spirit of Eurovision by bringing people together for fun summer evenings worth singing (at the top of your lungs!) about. The neighbourhood’s collective vocal cords will be warmed up ahead of the film thanks to live entertainers from the VAULT festival.\n\n\n\n\n\nLower Marsh Market traders will be on hand with tasty food options\, while independent bars along Lower Marsh will have various drinks deals to keep larynxes lubricated. At The Glitch\, there will be a 2-4-1 cocktail offer (from 5 pm to 7 pm); at Greensmiths\, moviegoers can get two Aperol Spritzes for £12. Those dressing up (as a character from the evening’s film) can get a 20% discount at the Vaulty Towers bar.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe launch night will centre around a screening of Mamma Mia! – the multi-award-winning film based on the songs of ABBA.\nIn keeping with the theme\, entertainers will welcome the crowd with group games and singing exercises.\n\n\n\n\n\nEurovision 2023 might only be for one day in May\, but ‘Lower Marsh Lates… At The Movies will ensure Londoners can say\n\n\n\n\n\n“Thank you for the music” for the rest of the summer.

SUMMARY:The Wetsuitman
DESCRIPTION:Foreign Affairs presents \n\n\n\nThe WetsuitmanBy Freek MariënTranslated by David McKay \n\n\n\nThree actors\, twenty-eight characters\, and one true story. \n\n\n\nIt’s 2015 on the coast of Norway. A retired architect finds a wetsuit\, and in it\, the remains of a body. The detective unit hits one dead end after another – until another body in an identical wetsuit washes up in the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nStarting as a Nordic noir\, The Wetsuitman playfully and movingly transforms into an exploration of identity\, prejudice and forced migration. As one journalist digs deeper into the story behind the Wetsuitman\, it becomes an interrogation of the world in which he was washed up and exactly how that could happen. \n\n\n\nThis timely and important play by award-winning Belgian playwright Freek Mariën takes us on a journey from Norway\, through Europe\, and to Syria\, revealing the devastating truth behind one family’s loss.
