SUMMARY:Adieu to Old England with Sverre Malling
DESCRIPTION:Surreal\, fairytale-esque landscapes and characters are rendered in exquisite detail in Norweigan artist Sverre Malling’s latest collection of drawings. Each image weaves together a multitude of sources\, converging allusions to contemporary mass culture with figures and symbols from art history and literature to create a richly layered visual narrative that cuts through the currents of time. His forthcoming exhibition entitled Adieu to Old England at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s Wandsworth space in London pays tribute to the diversity of England’s cultural and artistic heritage whilst also questioning the authority of conventional historic perspectives. \nMalling has always been drawn to the illustrations and narratives from English folklore\, taking a particular interest in ‘the eccentric\, the lost heroes\, the people who find themselves on the outskirts of the norm.’ This latest collection of drawings blends motifs from historic photography and art with the artist’s own fictional characters and landscapes\, whilst the highly detailed aesthetic takes inspiration from Victorian illustrators and the fairytale tradition. In a similar way to fairytale narratives\, many of Malling’s scenes appear innocent\, playful and idyllic on the surface whilst the atmospheric charcoal shading and shadowy skies are suggestive of darker\, macabre undertones. One drawing\, for example\, depicts an oversized floral plant surrounded by butterflies\, but if we look more closely\, the idyllic scene is complicated by a small skeleton (a traditional memento mori) at the plant’s base\, and a group of small children brandishing long thorns with which they have speared the butterflies. Here\, as in several of Malling’s artworks\, brutality and innocence are not so much juxtaposed\, but shown in coexistence to add a sense of mystery and depth to the narrative. \nAmongst the most haunting of the drawings are six portraits\, which reimagine eccentric characters from the recent and distant past such as the artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) and the musician\, performance artist and provocateur Genesis P-Orridge (1950-2020). Spare appears seated at his desk\, dressed in an elaborate robe with monstrous artworks hanging on the wall behind him. The contrast between the opulent domesticity of the scene and his challenging outward gaze creates a palpable tension that underlines the complicated nature of representation. This notion is further explored in the portrait of P-Orridge who appears holding her dog ‘Musty Dagger’ and a miniature doll of her dead partner and soulmate Lady Jaye\, surrounded by clashing bucolic and urban imagery. In the overhanging flowers\, the words ‘Short Circuit Control’ make reference to accusations of abusive behaviour whilst P-Orridge’s proud expression and pose imbues her with a sense of dignity. By memorialising these controversial figures through art\, Malling calls into question the concept of cultural iconography and thus\, invites the viewer to reconsider how our understanding of history and culture has been shaped by conventional narrative perspectives. \nThis is most obvious in the exhibition’s title work Adieu to Old England. Both the title and imagery are borrowed from an album by folk musician Shirley Collins\, who\, in a similar way to Malling\, collected and reinterpreted forgotten folk music. In Malling’s drawing\, the composition has been rearranged to alter the hierarchy of the image. Here\, the porcupine is the protagonist whilst the grand country estate is only partially visible in the background. ‘It is the fringes of culture that are the interesting\, the odd detail\, not the grand and predetermined\,’ says the artist. In this way\, his drawings can be understood through photo-ethicist Ariella Azoulay’s terminology as archaeological excavations of ‘potential history’\, but it is not just the past that Malling reimagines\, it is also our present and future culture. He is asking his viewers to wonder: what would the world look like if these forgotten figures from England’s history had become more deeply rooted in our collective memory? \nIn the context of our increasingly uncertain and fragmented modern world\, Malling’s drawings encourage us to embrace new ways of looking at the past so that we might imagine and enact a more hopeful and inclusive present and future.

SUMMARY:No Night So Dark; One family's story of memory stolen and regained
DESCRIPTION:To coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day 2021\, No Night So Dark discussion will tell the remarkable story of the Czech-Jewish Wels family\, from the late nineteenth century through WWII to the present day.\nFREE ONLINE EVENT. Streamed live on the Czech Centre London Facebook page. \nWhen Oxford-based Colin Wels first opened a box that his father Tomáš had kept for decades in the back of a cupboard\, he had little idea what it contained. His father – the only family member to survive the Holocaust – had never spoken about his life before he came to Britain as a 19-year-old in 1939. Through the contents of the box\, made up of hundreds of letters and documents\, photographs\, sketches and drawings\, the immense creative energy of several generations of the family was brought to life. \nThis event will include a discussion chaired by Prague-based journalist David Vaughan with Tomáš’s son Colin Wels and translator Gerry Turner\, who played a key role in helping Colin to find a way back to his family’s past\, and marks the recent publication of “Sancta Familia”\, a humorous – but with hindsight\, hugely poignant – evocation of family life\, written in late 1938 by Tomáš and illustrated by his 13-year-old brother Martin. \nColin Wels will discuss his search for his family’s past with Gerry Turner\, whose translation of the memoir At the Bernards written by Colin’s great-grandfather Šimon Wels marked the beginning of his search. The book offers a vivid picture of life in a Czech village in the second half of the 19th century. The story continues with Colin’s grandfather Rudolf Wels\, a successful architect who worked closely with the influential modernist architect Adolf Loos in pre-First World War Vienna. Another piece of the puzzle is provided by Sancta Familia\, which was also preserved in the box. Written by Rudolf’s sons\, eighteen-year-old Tomáš and thirteen-year-old Martin in Prague at the end of 1938\, it is made up of humorous scenes from the family’s daily life and richly illustrated by Martin\, it depicts the world of a modern middle-class Prague family just before it was drawn into the abyss of WWII. Only Tomáš was to survive the Holocaust\, reaching Britain as a refugee in the spring of 1939. \nThe discussion will be complemented by extracts from Sancta Familia and At the Bernards\, by examples of the family’s rich visual legacy – including Martin’s sketches and Rudolf’s designs as an architect – and extracts from a new podcast series devoted to the family and produced in cooperation with Czech Radio. It will be moderated by writer and journalist David Vaughan\, who has devoted several years to researching the family’s history and has been instrumental in publishing Sancta Familia in a first trilingual (Czech\, German and English) facsimile edition (Triáda\, 2020). He is the author of the exhibition No Night So Dark devoted to the Wels family\, which was held in Prague’s Winternitz Villa in 2020. \nDavid Vaughan is a writer\, broadcaster\, journalist and university lecturer. His debut novel Slyšte můj hlas(2014) won the Czech Book Prize readers’ award in 2015. The book was been published in English by Jantar Publishing as Hear My Voice (2019). He is also author of Battle for the Airwaves (2008)\, a study of the role of the media in the run-up to WWII. For eight years he was editor-in-chief of Radio Prague\, having previously been the BBC’s Prague correspondent. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with Insiders/Outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Culture and Czech Radio.

SUMMARY:Tonight the Air is Warm
DESCRIPTION:Tonight the Air is Warm brings together a collection of vibrant and diverse photography\, print and video works by eight established\, mid-career and emerging artists from Southeast Asia. Curated by Tolla Duke Sloane\, the show will occupy both the main and speakeasy space at Kristin Hjellegjerde’s London Bridge gallery\, providing audiences the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the region’s artistic landscape. From the tropical gothic to the surrealism of dreams and folklore\, and the reimagining of historical narratives\, the artists’ reflect on universal issues relating to identity and belonging\, whilst also providing heightened and imaginative insights into the cultural specifics of their geographical locations. \n\n\n\nDue to the cramped urban spaces of the Southeast Asian cities\, photography and other digital mediums are central to the region’s contemporary art scene\, allowing artists to transcend their physical boundaries. Thai artist and social activist Manit Sriwanichpoom is widely recognised as one of the original pioneers of a more conceptual\, socio-geographical approach to photography and is best known for his striking Pink Man series (1997-2018) from which two works will be shown in this exhibition. The selected photographs feature the cartoon-esque character – who is embodied by Thai poet Sompong Thawee – posed within the set of a so-called ‘opera’. Dressed in his signature fluorescent pink suit with a matching shopping trolley\, the character’s presence is both humorous and jarring\, mutely referencing the absurdity of consumer culture. \n\n\n\nSimilarly\, Malaysian artist Yee I-Lann’s primarily photomedia-based art practice draws on the visual language of magic realism and mythology to speculate on issues of culture\, power and the resonance of historical narratives in collective consciousness. Her large-scale photo-collage artwork Like the Banana Tree at the Gate conjures up the folkloric figure of the Pontianak (the ghostly spirit of a vengeful woman who was said to live in a banana tree)\, who is embodied by several well known artists and activists within a contemporary studio setting. I-Lann uses humour as a satirical tool to both charm the viewer and once again\, expose the absurdity of traditional perspectives in the context of the modern world. \n\n\n\nSarah Choo Jing’s practice also employs theatrical techniques\, often designing controlled spaces that used to incite spontaneous interaction. For her video installation Tonight\, the air is warm (after which the exhibition is titled)\, she invited the residents of a social housing complex in Singapore to gather in the playground area at night where she left varying props for them to interact with under stage lighting. ‘The essential nature of the activity is imprecise and occurs across space and time\,’ commented the artist. ‘A perpetually open project\, the piece takes place in the inter-spaces between interpretation and negotiation\, performance and chance.’ By contrast\, a video work entitled Where do the fishes go? by Vietnamese artist Jo Ngo\, made in April 2020 when Ho Chi Minh City was in lockdown\, transports viewers into a hallucinogenic vision of fish and whales swimming through scenes of a city emptied of human interaction. Accompanied by an otherworldly soundtrack\, the video has a calming and poetic quality\, but at the same time it is impossible to ignore environmental connotations of the natural world reclaiming man-made\, urban spaces. \n\n\n\nBaliense artist Budi Agung Kuswara engages with historical narratives and archival imagery to create intricately detailed large-scale works that occupy the hazy\, liminal space between dream and reality. For this exhibition\, Kuswara presents a series of cyanotypes\, which are created by assembling objects and materials onto light-sensitive photographic paper and exposing the composition to the sun. The artist then paints colour onto the blue printed image\, imbuing a touch of opulence to his characters and also completing the physical connection between the body and sun. This sense of connectivity is central to Kuswara’s practice – and specifically his fascination with mystical science – through which the imagery of the past is revived in the present. \n\n\n\nFilipino artist Nicole Coson’s print-making practice also meditates on the residues of time. She sees her depictions of verdant tropical landscapes as ‘architectural interventions…piercing walls with flourishing green windows’ that transport the viewer not only into a new geographical location\, but also into a psychological space\, reflecting on the power of imagery to awaken the memory and imagination. A similarly palimpsestic approach is central to Genevieve Chua’s image-making process. The Singaporean artist typically begins by photographing wild\, natural landscapes in black and white\, before painting onto the print\, using colour to focus our gaze on a specific aspect or detail which might otherwise be overlooked. Also based in Singapore\, Robert Zhao Renhui’s cerebral practice is preoccupied with the natural world and human intervention. In an ongoing series\, he inserts a piece of human detritus into the jungle and then sets up a camera trap to record nature’s interactions. The resulting images are typically dark and closely-cropped with an intimate\, voyeuristic quality that places the viewer in an almost uncomfortable position as an outsider looking in. \n\n\n\nA collection of visually arresting artworks by Wawi Navarroza\, come from the Filipino artist’s 2019 series entitled Self-Portraits & The Tropical Gothic. Navarroza creates formally staged scenes for the camera\, deliberately controlling the lighting techniques and scenography to flatten the final image and fuse together disparate elements. In this way\, the artist defines the Tropical Gothic as a process of syncretism that reflects on the incongruities of Filipino culture as a blend of East and Western influences\, and also\, on the performance and construction of self more generally. \n\n\n\nPresented together\, this collection of bold\, visually arresting artworks offers a vivid form of escapism that not only transports audiences into the landscapes and stories of Southeast Asia\, but also fosters a deeper understanding of\, and appreciation for the region’s diverse\, flourishing creativity.

SUMMARY:Train to Teach London
DESCRIPTION:People in London are being encouraged to join a virtual careers event to find out more about life as a teacher. The session\, part of a national recruitment drive\, aims to inspire more people in the region to join a unique profession that helps shape the lives of the next generation. \nThe free virtual Train to Teach event will take place on Saturday 30th January 2021 from 10am to 1pm and will be supported by a local teacher Dimitra Totikidou from Orleans Park School Twickenham. At the event\, maths teacher Dimitra will be live on the platform to share her experience and insights\, as well as helping others to explore teaching as a career. \nThe Train to Teach events are part of the national Get into Teaching campaign which provides a comprehensive programme of support to help graduates become teachers. Last year alone\, thousands of aspiring teachers attended a series of face-to-face events. For this academic year and in light of ongoing Covid-19 restrictions\, events are being hosted online so anyone curious or set on a career in teaching can still speak to current teachers from their area\, as well as expert advisers who can help them with training options and next steps. \nReflecting on her career to date\, Dimitra\, a maths teacher at Orleans Park School in Twickenham\, said: \n“I’m proud to be supporting the campaign and I would encourage anyone who is just starting out in the world of work\, or looking to switch jobs\, to consider a career in teaching. \n“Teaching is such a varied role\, from the emotional rewards of making students feel like anything is possible to using your experience to bring lessons to life – no two days are the same. The best part of it for me\, is the feeling of making a change in young people’s lives and that as teachers we learn and develop new skills every day to accommodate our students’ needs. Also\, working with kids is fun\, refreshing and life changing. \n“I know the impact good teachers can have on a child\, not just in terms of academic success but in teaching a child the importance of social skills\, promoting resilience\, self-worth and confidence.” \nRoger Pope\, spokesperson for the Get Into Teaching campaign and a National Leader of Education\, said: \n“It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that every lesson is helping to shape the life of a young person. \n“As well as the immense satisfaction of witnessing students learn and knowing you are influencing who or what they might become\, teaching enables you to tap into your talents and passion for a particular subject. \n“It also offers some competitive financial rewards and long-term prospects. \n“Anyone who feels they have the passion and potential to teach should join us for this virtual event.” \nTo gain access to the online event\, people will need to register at least two working days in advance. On the day\, upon entering the virtual event platform\, attendees will be greeted with welcome videos and introductory presentations to give them a flavour of teaching. They can also enter the live marketplace where there will be experienced teacher training advisors\, current teachers and local teacher training providers who can answer any questions. \nYou could receive a £24\,000 tax-free bursary to train as a teacher\, in selected subjects\, and newly qualified teachers start on a minimum starting salary of £25\,000 to £32\,000\, depending on location. \nApplications for teacher training\, starting in September 2021\, are now open.

SUMMARY:Sector Zero - Free Online Film Screening [MARSM Digital 2021]
DESCRIPTION:‘Sector Zero’ is a unique journey into the bittersweet history of Beirut’s derelict neighbourhood of Karantina. Lying to the East of Beirut’s port\, the area harbours a complex and fascinating story in both its buildings and ruins. The award-winning film analyses the persistence of this jarring urban void in modern-day Lebanon\, and how its dark history mirrors the country’s erratic progression in search of its national identity. \nThe controversial history of Karantina unfolds as a rich visual tapestry. Originally an Ottoman quarantine station for maritime travellers\, Karantina became a dense home for Palestinian\, Kurdish and South Lebanese refugees in the 50s and 60s; by the 1970s there were almost 30\,000 inhabitants. The area’s ruins\, separated by a kilometer-long wall\, would later house one of Beirut’s most spectacular and legendary night clubs: B018. Designed by architect Bernard Khoury\, the club discusses the role that culture and space play in the shaping of a communal memory (and at times\, amnesia). \nHarrowing images are interlaced with conversations exploring cultural identity\, political discord\, and Lebanon’s continuous regression. Through discussions with three leading Lebanese personalities\, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Chouki Azouri\, writer Hazem Saghiyeh\, and Architect Bernard Khoury\, ‘Sector Zero’ scrutinizes the neglected traumas of Lebanon’s past\, its unstable present\, and the difficulties it faces in building a satisfactory future.\nAccompanying the rich imagery of the film is the brilliant sound design and music\, composed and assembled by director and sound designer Nadim Mishlawi\, that sets this film’s acoustic background with intricate\, raw and industrial sounds.

SUMMARY:Adjust the Procedure
DESCRIPTION:Spin Cycle in association with JCS Theater Company presents The World Premiere of ADJUST THE PROCEDURE\, a new play by Jake Shore (The Devil Is On The Loose With An Axe In Marshalltown\, Holy Moly\, and Down The Mountain And Across The Stream) conceived during the pandemic and created with Zoom theater in mind. It’s early Fall 2020 and the pandemic consumes a Manhattan university. In addition to tracking rising cases of COVID on campus\, the school’s administrators face immigration problems\, suicide threats\, and professors losing their minds. But in the midst of all the madness\, it’s the internal bureaucratic battles that threaten the school’s preservation. \nOver the course of two conflict-ridden Zoom meetings\, ADJUST THE PROCEDURE gives audiences a rare peek into the business of higher education at a moment of multiple reckonings. “A couldn’t-be-more-timely play.” — Derek McCracken\, BroadwayWorld “As this play questions whether it is easier to ADJUST THE PROCEDURE or adjust reality\, it forcefully reminds us ‘When someone dies\, there are consequences.’ \nA timely play for troubled times. Well worth watching.” — Laurie Lawson\, Electronic Link Journey “Smartly tailored to its theme and era\, and the direction and delivery of its thought-provoking narrative pack a punch and leave us wondering what really drives our educational system and who benefits the most from it.” — Deb Miller\, DC Metro Theater Arts Written and directed by Jake Shore\, ADJUST THE PROCEDURE stars Ed Altman\, Adam Files\, Meagan Moses\, and Nicholas Miles Newton.

After graduating from Prague’s Academy of Arts\, Architecture and Design Miler went to work with the father of Czech animation\, Jiří Trnka. Miler’s first short About the Millionaire Who Stole the Sun (1948) was based on poem by Jirí Wolker. A great admirer of Walter Disney\, Miler developed the Little Mole character for his educational short How the Mole Got His Pants (1957)\, which won the Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in Italy. More than 60 shorts featuring Little Mole soon followed. Miler has also made an animated series of seven films about a cricket\, illustrated a number of books but it was Little Mole he kept returning to until his retirement in 2001.

SUMMARY:AI: When a Robot Writes a Play
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Centre London has partnered with Prague’s Švanda Theatre and theaitre.com to present to the UK public an innovate project entitled ‘AI: When a Robot Writes a Play’ created by a team of computer scientists and drama experts led by a computational linguist. \n\n\n\nThe play\, telling a story of joy and sorrow of everyday life from a robot’s point of view\, is composed of dialogues generated by artificial intelligence to celebrate 100th anniversary of the premiere of Czech playwright Karel Čapek’s play R.U.R. in which the word ‘robot’ was first used. The 60-minute play will be performed in Czech with English subtitles and followed by a debate with artificial intelligence and theatre experts which will seek to answer the question of whether a robot can write a theatre play and thus pass the most difficult Turing test to date. The debate will be translated into English for international audiences. The event will be streamed live on the Czech Centre London’s Facebook page and on http://www.theaitre.com \n\n\n\nABOUT THE PROJECT \n\n\n\nTomáš Studeník\, Czech radical innovator\, came up with the idea to celebrate the centenary of the premiere of Čapek’s play\, originally staged in Prague in January 1921\, by replacing Čapek by artificial intelligence as the playwright. The project was created in cooperation with the Švanda Theatre\, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the Charles University and the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. The aim has been to explore how artificial intelligence actually performs in a human creative discipline and how much it is able to create a usable theatrical script. \n\n\n\nDrama expert David Košťák who\, together with computer scientists\, oversaw the entire process\, reveals the beginning of the project when the language model was given basic parameters: who and where and two introductory replicas. These were then further developed by the computer. But as a lifeless beginner playwright\, the robot needed help from humans. ‘Sometimes it swapped female and male characters or clung to something irrelevant so the dialogue lost its meaning. And there is one more obstacle the robot is having difficulties with so far – the subtext. The play is not only about what the character says\, but also about what he or she actually thinks’\, says Košťák. \n\n\n\nWill computer programmes completely replace human playwrights one day? ‘It doesn’t look like it yet\, but it could help authors in the near future’\, concludes David Košťák. \n\n\n\nProject website: http://www.theaitre.com \n\n\n\nPartners of the project: THEaiTRE\, TA CR (The project TL03000348 THEaiTRE: Artificial Intelligence as the author of the play is co-financed with the state support of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic within the ÉTA Program 3)\, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics\, Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics\, CEE Hacks\, Prg.ai\, DAMU\, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic\, Czech Centers\, Prague\, Prague 5 (The theatre is a stage of the capital city of Prague and is supported by the Municipality of Prague 5).

SUMMARY:The Man Behind the Microphone - Free Online Film Screening [MARSM Digital]
DESCRIPTION:An arresting story of love and family\, stardom and music. \nHedi Jouini\, known as the “Frank Sinatra of Tunisia” is the most popular musical star in the country’s history and a celebrated singer\, composer and oud player across the Arabic-speaking world. His long lasting career\, that began in the 1930s\, spanned almost five decades\, struck at the heart of the post-colonial social and political upheaval of Tunisia. To this day\, Jouini’s music inspires both revolutionaries and conservatives alike and has been an influential soundtrack to their ongoing search for identity in the wake of the Arab Revolutions. \nBut why did he keep his fame hidden from his family? What dark secrets did he keep from the nation that worshipped him? ‘The Man Behind the Microphone’ reveals the incredible story behind a man and his music\, and offers fascinating insight into Tunisia’s cultural evolution. The film builds a profound portrait of the godfather of Tunisian music – father to a nation\, but not always to his family.
