SUMMARY:The Pillowman
DESCRIPTION:“The Pillowman is a spellbinding stunner of a play.” Ben Brantley\, New York Times \nMartin McDonagh’s Olivier Award-winning play The Pillowman makes its eagerly anticipated West End Premiere following its London debut at the National Theatre. \n‘The first duty of a storyteller is to tell a story’. Or was it ‘The only duty of a storyteller is to tell a story.’ \nIn a totalitarian state a Writer is questioned by the authorities about a spate of murders that bear similarities to his short stories. Is this life imitating art or something more sinister? This black comedy widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the past 25 years\, examines the role of the artist in society and asks what price we pay for freedom of expression. \n  \n \n  \nWith an all-star cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals\, Nowhere Boy) and Steve Pemberton (The League of Gentlemen\, Inside No. 9)\, Matthew Dunster (Hangmen\, True West) directs the first major revival of Martin McDonagh’s (Hangmen\, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing\,Missouri) electrifying and savagely funny play at the intimate Duke of York’s Theatre for a strictly limited season from 24 July. \n  \nCast \nThe appearance of any member of the cast is subject to change and may be affected by contracts\, holiday\, illness\, or events beyond the producers’ control. If in doubt\, please check with the Box Office before booking. \n  \nTimes\nFri\, 24th July 2020 – Sat\, 17th October 2020 \nMonday – Saturday Eves: 7:30pm\nThursday & Saturday Matinees: 2:30pm \n  \nClick Here for Tickets\n  \n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Fairtrade Foundation Hot Chocolate Salon
DESCRIPTION:The Fairtrade Foundation is set to unveil the world’s first secret hot chocolate salon\, hidden inside an unassuming East London newsagent this February. \nWithin the magazine racks and behind the countless snacks\, inquisitive chocolate lovers will be invited to press a secret button that will see the shop floor rotate 180 degrees and transport them to a West-African themed speakeasy-style cafe. \nCreated to support Fairtrade’s ‘She Deserves’ campaign\, Rosine’s Hot Chocolate Salon is named after a real cocoa farmer from Côte d’Ivoire – and aims to tell the true story behind our favourite chocolate bars and why cocoa farmers\, like Rosine\, deserve a fair living income. \nThree delicious hot chocolates will be on the menu – created by leading celebrity chefs\, Melissa Hemsley\, Tess Ward and Tom Hunt. Each creation is named after a real cocoa farmer from West Africa and will be priced at £1.82 – the cost of a day’s living income for a cocoa farmer. Guests of the salon will also be treated to authentic West African jazz music\, surprise appearances from celebrity ambassadors and the chance to hear the compelling stories behind the cocoa farmers. \nCocoa farmers typically work gruelling days yet earn insufficient money to provide the basics for their families or give opportunities to their children – and female cocoa farmers like Rosine carry the greatest burden. They work in the fields\, look after children\, carry water and transport the cocoa beans to market\, often with fewer rights than men. \nMillions of farmers who grow our food in the developing world aren’t being paid what they deserve and as the world cocoa price has collapsed\, farmers are now even poorer than they were before. The living income in Ivory Coast is £1.82 a day\, yet a typical farmer earns only 73p. \nFairtrade Fortnight’s She Deserves campaign aims to establish a living income for women cocoa growers in West Africa. Fairtrade standards ensure that women have a voice in the community\, are represented in decision-making and benefit from the increased value of Fairtrade sales. \nAll money raised by the salon will help make programmes such as the Women’s School of Leadership in Côte d’Ivoire possible. The project aims to empower women cocoa farmers in West Africa to become business owners\, members of farming groups and leaders in their communities.

SUMMARY:Serena Morton presents Adébayo Bolaji – Topia: a re-invention of the self
DESCRIPTION:Serena Morton is proud to present Topia\, a solo show by London-based Artist Adébayo Bolaji. \nBolaji’s work is led by his earnest curiosity\, constantly challenging his ideas before turning his questions towards the viewer. Themes such as the birth of social media\, the selfie\, Brexit\, gender debates\, climate change and celebrity presidents\, help drive this eye-catching solo show\, which consists of new works that invite the viewer to consider the many different worlds that exist in today’s contemporary society and how the need for reinvention has created hope but also unease. In addition to Bolaji’s signature colour-driven paintings\, the exhibition will premier his new film POEM 4\, which centres on a young Instagram model navigating her way through social media concepts of reality\, whilst questioning our ideas of control and identity. \nThis immersive exhibition will transform the gallery space into a secret cinema of reality where figurative painting expresses classical storytelling motifs fused with ideas from West African folklore and western theatre – all parts of Bolaji’s own past. Sigmund Freud cited play as a means of healing: it allows for the expression and reconciliation of unconscious emotions and anxieties. This is an apt metaphor for Bolaji’s paintings\, which he describes as a form of psychoanalysis: where colourful\, animated canvases unfold organically from within. \nHis fundamental process can be characterised as a liberating play\, utilising his instinctual choice of colour and his emphasis on following and trusting the line. Bolaji enjoys engaging with both ritualistic and mystical imagery; depicting struggles both internal and external between the old and new. The images act as metaphors for the conflict we all experience whilst establishing our own emotional identities. The use of the same vibrant language is a constant element narrating a different story within each painting\, each looking inward in order to comment on the external world. The artist questions if his cathartic practice can provide a therapeutic function for both himself and his audience.

SUMMARY:Cake Week 2020
DESCRIPTION:We’re a nation of cake lovers\, so let’s celebrate with a week focusing on our favourite sweet treat. Whether it’s coffee & walnut\, chocolate\, a Victoria sponge or lemon drizzle\, let’s give the UK an excuse to indulge. \nWe want bakers and non-bakers around the UK to get their mixing bowls out\, to bake their favourite cake and share it with friends\, family or colleagues. Alongside this\, we’re encouraging people to support their local independent bakery\, the bakers who have a passion for their craft and create incredible cakes ready to be shared over a cup of tea or a glass of champagne. \nAn awareness week unifies people; we’re a nation who love a theme\, a subject that brings us all together and creates a sense of community. And what better way to create a sense of community than over a slice of cake! Whether it’s homemade\, created by an expert baker or an elaborately decorated work of art. \nJoin us for an exciting week of cake related events and festivities!

DESCRIPTION:Following a record-breaking fair at The Truman Brewery October 2019\, Roy’s Art Fair is excited to present its 6th edition\, with more to offer our visitors than ever before. There will be 80 emerging and established artists on display\, both new to our fair as well previous artists showing new work. This FREE event will be hosted across 4 days at the iconic Bargehouse\, Oxo Tower Wharf on the lively Southbank. \nRoy’s Art Fair is growing bigger with each event and is now firmly established in the art lover’s diary. With each fair growing in sales\, visitors and artists our 6th fair will play host to what visitors love about Roy’s and more. What sets us aside from the host of other art fairs now popping up around London is our comfortable yet energetic atmosphere that allows visitors to connect with artists and invest in artwork they love. Roy’s Art Fair does this at an approachable level\, whether you’re an avid art collector or a first-time buyer and with our free entrance we welcome all without a hard sell mentality. \nNew to Roy’s Art Fair will be our schedule of free talks and tours. Talks will include introduction to buying and curating for your own space\, how art can improve your mental health\, unleashing your own creativity and exploring art and environmental issues. These talks will be given by experts in their field and we are excited about incorporating this for our visitors.
