DESCRIPTION:Climb aboard Francis Drake’s ship\, The Golden Hinde\, courtesy of Across the Sea and Flotsam Sessions! \nTashkezar are a seven-piece superband from across the UK\, Egypt\, France and Uzbekistan. Their transcultural vibes and explosive fusion sound takes in powerful Mediterranean rhythms\, mesmerising Arabic vocals and melodies\, punchy Balkan horns and floor-shaking bass lines. Led by the wonderful Mariam Ali\, an Egyptian-Montenegrin singer/songwriter who will also be leading Flotsam Sessions’ November workshop. \nWith a basis in traditional East Asian music The Sages – 竹林七贤 draw inspirations from different music elements throughout time and history. Through original composition and adaption of traditional music the band explores the concepts between “East” and “West”\, cultural identity and musical genres. Led by Yi Jia and Peadar Connolly-Davey fresh from Flotsam Sessions’ October 3rd workshop. \nDoors open at 18:30\, drinks available at bar\, music starts at 19:00.

DESCRIPTION:This Halloween – when the veil between the worlds is thin – Union Chapel invites you on an experiential journey. ‘Medusa: The Transformation’ is a unique visual performance of live music\, projection mapping\, soundscapes and ritual\, presented by artist and musician Boe Huntress. \nIn Greek mythology Medusa is a beautiful maiden cursed by Athena with profound ugliness: her hair is replaced with a nest of writhing snakes and her gaze petrifies mortals on the spot. Her head is eventually severed by Perseus in a quest for honour. \nHowever\, an older story rooted in African and Mesopotamian tradition suggests that Medusa was a Libyan goddess\, adopted by the Greeks when they colonised Libya in 600BCE. In this version of the story snakes were keepers of wisdom and power\, and rocks were worshipped\, giving a different meaning to Medusa’s ability to turn people into stone. \nThe story we know reflects the colonisation of history itself\, as well as advancing a more patriarchal narrative of jealous competition between disempowered women. This performance piece digs a little deeper. \nMedusa is an archetypal story\, which\, like all great myths\, can be enjoyed and understood on many levels. The story looks at what we learn when we confront our worst fears and accept the deepest aspects of ourselves. \nAbout Boe Huntress:\nBoe is a musician and artist in residence at Union Chapel Church. Through her work in this role she has developed thought provoking innovative pieces around themes such as masculinity\, war and female power. JOB TODAY has commissioned acclaimed British photographer\, Lewis Khan\, to travel the nation to capture women aged 16 to 29 years old\, and showcase 10 girls working casual jobs in different industries\, to show how this iconic role has evolved over the decades.\n‘Saturday Girls’\, a term coined to describe women using part-time\, weekend work to enhance their lives\, prospects and financial freedom\, has evolved. \nWomen are now using Saturday jobs to become more entrepreneurial and follow self-made ventures. The all new Saturday Girl has also become more tech savvy and juggles multiple jobs to enjoy more flexibility and independence. \nFrom Glasgow down to Newcastle\, Birmingham\, London and beyond\, the documentary style exhibition showcases Collette Conlin\, an usher at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle who hopes to become a star performer herself\, Suzie Hawkins\, the green fingered Saturday Girl from Manchester that started as an intern and now works Saturdays to teach floristry to others\, and Helen Adeyera\, a weekend hairdresser that is studying Computer Science at Coventry University\, just to name a few.
