SUMMARY:Beethoven Unwrapped: Pastoral - Classical Concert
DESCRIPTION:Birdsong\, rushing streams\, countryside dances and a musical thunderstorm: join London Incidental Orchestra for Beethoven Unwrapped: Pastoral\, a relaxed\, story-led classical concert at the beautiful St Gabriel’s Church in Pimlico. \nThis is Beethoven for the curious. Before performing Symphony No. 6\, “Pastoral”\, in full\, conductor Alexander Conway will guide the audience through the music\, revealing the stories\, natural imagery\, structure and hidden details behind one of Beethoven’s most loved works. \nExpect live demonstrations from the orchestra\, humour\, context and a warm\, informal atmosphere. There is no dress code\, and no prior classical knowledge is needed. Whether you are a regular concert-goer or completely new to classical music\, this is a fresh\, friendly and accessible way to experience Beethoven live. \nThe evening opens with Beethoven’s dramatic Egmont Overture\, followed by an Unwrapped introduction to the Pastoral Symphony and a full performance by the London Incidental Orchestra’s 40-piece orchestra. \nThere will also be an audience-conductor raffle in support of Mind UK\, giving one audience member the chance to take centre stage and conduct the orchestra. \nA well-stocked bar will be available before the concert\, during the interval and after the performance. \nPrevious LIO concerts have been described as having “the energy of a comedy set mixed with a live gig and a dash of a history lesson thrown in”. After a previous Beethoven concert\, John Suchet of Classic FM said: “It’s hard to do anything original with Beethoven… but you’ve managed it!” \nAll profits go to Mind UK\, working to make sure nobody has to face a mental health problem alone. \nYou can book classical ensembles in London for recitals and private events in London.

SUMMARY:Soho Solos: Mandy Hudson\, James Robert Morrison\, Conor Quinn\, Alice Sheppard Fidler
DESCRIPTION:Great Pulteney Street gallery is delighted to present Soho Solos\, four solo presentations by Soho Open prize winners Mandy Hudson\, James Robert Morrison\, Conor Quinn and Alice Sheppard Fidler. \nSelected from around 100 artists shortlisted for the inaugural Soho Open exhibition\, each of the winning artists returns with a solo presentation in one of the four galleries at GPS. Running concurrently\, the Soho Solos provide a snapshot of the exciting variety of approaches in contemporary art today. \nAlice Sheppard Fidler and Mandy Hudson find inspiration in and give new meaning to discarded\, overlooked and found objects. Whereas Hudson elevates everyday items by arranging them into still lifes\, immortalising them in her paintings\, Sheppard Fidler combines objects and materials into sculptures and installations that shift and evolve in relation to the space they inhabit. \nConor Quinn and James Robert Morrison reclaim memories of secrecy and shame shaped by their experience of growing up gay within heteronormative and adversarial environments. While Quinn combines elements of self portraiture and handmade puppets into surreal oil paintings\, Morrison translates imagery from personal vintage gay pornography into delicate pencil drawings\, using cigarette (fag) papers as a fragile\, unconventional surface. Presented in separate spaces under one roof in Soho\, the four solos come together as a collection of visual short stories.

SUMMARY:Designed to Belong: Modernism\, Industry and Community
DESCRIPTION:Belonging is not accidental – it is designed. This panel explores how architecture shapes belonging\, not just by providing shelter\, but by structuring everyday life. \n\nUsing Bata Village at East Tilbury as a starting point\, it examines how modernist ideals\, industrial ambition\, and community planning created a distinctive model of living. Historian Milan Balaban situates the settlement within the global story of Bata cities\, while architectural historian Gillian Darley reflects on its significance for British modernism. Mick Pinion from the Bata Heritage Centre brings a local and heritage perspective on East Tilbury’s development and legacy\, and architect Ondřej Chybík discusses contemporary lessons for urban planning. Chaired by John Tusa\, the conversation links historical experiments to today’s questions of development\, identity and place-making. \nSPEAKERS:\nSir John Tusa is a British arts administrator\, author\, journalist and former presenter of the BBC’s Newsnight. Born in Czechoslovakia\, he moved to East Tilbury in 1939\, where his father was Managing Director of the British Bata Shoe Company factory. He is Co-Chairman of the European Union Youth Orchestra and was previously Managing Director of the BBC World Service and Director of the Barbican Arts Centre. He is the author of On Board\, Making a Noise and On Creativity. \nGillian Darley OBE is a widely published writer and historian who was President of the Twentieth Century Society from 2014 until 2021. She first visited East Tilbury\, in search of the Bata industrial village\, in the early 1970s\, when researching and photographing her first book\, Villages of Vision (1975\, reissued 2007). Ever since she has returned at regular Intervals. The village featured in her most recent book\, Excellent Essex (2019). In 2024\, Gillian achieved a longed-for aim\, a visit to Zlin. \nMilan Balaban is a historian specialising in business\, economic\, and industrial history\, with a focus on the global Bata Company network. He is a researcher at the Information Centre Bata\, Tomas Bata University in Zlín\, and a lecturer at Palacký University in Olomouc. His work examines industrialisation\, company towns\, and corporate mobility in Central and Eastern Europe. He has published several books\, including Bata across Continents (2022)\, and articles in leading journals\, and lectures internationally on multinational enterprises and industrial modernity. \n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBOOK NOW\n\nPart of the London Festival of Architecture. \nThe talk is an accompanying event to the exhibition Desire to Create: Baťa’s Architecture of Belonging\, presented at the Vitrínka Gallery\, running from 9 April to 12 June 2026.

SUMMARY:I Made You A Mixtape - June
DESCRIPTION:A new movement-theatre experience from Response Theatre Company. \nWelcome to the party you always wished you were invited to. \n‘I Made You a Mixtape’ throws you straight into the heart of a 90s college dorm hangout\, complete with lava lamps\, folding tables\, plastic cups\, old-school camcorders\, and the greatest hits of the decade. Nine girls arrive for one last night together before their lives change forever. What starts as a carefree evening of music and dancing unfolds into a deeply human collage of friendship\, nostalgia\, heartbreak\, and joy. With each track they play\, a new world opens: improvised music videos\, chaotic games\, secret confessions\, and the kind of laughter that makes your chest ache. \nCreated using the Response Movement Method\, a hybrid of Meisner acting and movement theatre\, the performers treat the music as their scene partner and the choreography as their text\, allowing the story to emerge in real time. No two performances are the same. What you witness is truthfully lived\, not acted. \nWarm\, hilarious\, tender\, and wildly nostalgic\, ‘I Made You a Mixtape’ is a love letter to growing up\, growing apart\, and the friends who made us who we are. It’s a 90s coming-of-age party\, and everyone’s invited.

SUMMARY:Summer Music in City Churches – ‘Around the World’ – Concerts in the Square Mile
DESCRIPTION:A nine-day celebration of music in the City of London \nSet in the heart of London’s historic Square Mile\, Kestrel Music’s nine-day festival\, Summer Music in City Churches\, returns with a world-class roster of artists taking a musical voyage ‘Around the World’. Hosted across five atmospheric\, acoustically rich churches\, this year’s theme explores music inspired by cities\, landscapes and traditions. From traditional song and jazz arrangements\, to lush choral harmonies and orchestral favourites\, the programme celebrates sounds of town and country\, both at home and abroad. \nGuest artists are drawn from the finest musicians and collaborative partnerships performing internationally today\, including Rachel Nicholls and Michael Dussek\, Lucy Parham with Juliet Stevenson\, Mark Bebbington with Alistair McGowan\, and Iain Farrington’s jazz trio. Joining them will be multi-talented duo Eleanor Grant and Gus McQuade\, and young singers from Hackney Choral. A wealth of chamber music further enriches the programme\, with lunchtime performances by Brother Tree Sound\, Tier3 Trio\, Cassatt Trio\, and Sonas Quartet. \nOpening the festival\, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Gergely Madaras conjure the Mediterranean warmth of Spain and Italy in works by Rossini\, Ravel and Mendelssohn. They are joined by guitarist Jack Hancher\, 2022 Royal Overseas League Gold Medalist and EuroStrings Artist\, as soloist in Rodrigo’s evocative Concierto de Aranjuez. \nThere are opportunities to hear the City of London Choir led by Daniel Hyde on two contrasting occasions performances; as part of a Festival Choral Evensong in the grand tradition of British cathedrals\, and to celebrate traditional song rooted in the land – from George Shearing’s jazz settings to Elgar in Bavaria\, in the festival’s delightful finale\, ‘Islands and Highlands’. \nSummer Music in City Churches was founded in 2018\, presenting beautiful music to engage\, divert and inspire\, in ancient and architecturally stunning churches in London’s Square Mile. Standing cheek by jowl with City offices\, these churches are glorious settings in which to listen and reflect: oases of history\, beauty and peace amidst the 24-7 hurly-burly of City life. \nFurther information and how to book \nFull programme\, venues\, timings and ticket sales can be found on the website. \nTicket prices range from £15 to £35\, with half-price discounts available for students and those under 25. For those wishing to attend multiple events\, a festival season ticket provides excellent value at £120. \n(Photo of Royal Philharmonic Orchestra by Ben Wright)

SUMMARY:Anonymous 11780 - London Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Anonymous 11780\, written and directed by Hila Sedighi\, was created during the days of deep sorrow and unrest in Iran. \n“A story of five decades of brutal repression in a land\, emerging from the days of bloodshed on the 8th and 9th of January…” \nThis eight-episode theatrical work invites the audience to witness fragments of life\, memory\, and loss through a poetic and narrative structure. Moving between intimate personal moments and collective historical memory\, the piece reflects on violence\, grief\, and the emotional weight carried across generations.\nAt its core\, the work honors the stories of eight individuals who lost their lives during the events of 18 and 19 Dey (8th and 9th of January)\, offering a contemplative and emotionally charged exploration of loss\, identity\, resistance\, and remembrance. Through live performance\, poetic language\, and visual storytelling\, Anonymous 11780 creates a space where personal testimony and collective memory intersect.
