SUMMARY:Renaissance Music from England & Spain
DESCRIPTION:The Lovekyn Consort perform quintessentially English songs and tunes from the Elizabethan stage and tavern\, together with tales of battles\, love and loss from Imperial Spain. \nIn 1588\, the English fleet won a resounding victory against their longterm rival. Spain had established its empire at the beginning of the sixteenth century\, and England wanted to establish its own trading networks and military power at sea. England was an expanding power tilting at a much greater one\, and Spain had incorporated cultural influences from Jewish and Muslim cultures and was now absorbing elements of South American culture. \nThe Lovekyn Consort will perform music from the formative period of Spain’s expansion – from the end of the fifteenth century to the first third of the sixteenth\, together with songs and tunes from the burgeoning English stage and its developing civic culture – from the late sixteenth to the early seventeenth centuries. Spain had forcibly integrated its minorities before expanding abroad\, absorbing some aspects of their cultures into a national style\, whereas English music some times assumed a style borrowed from one of its neighbours. In the middle of these developing empires were the naval ‘Armada’ battles of the 1580s\, and we will mark these with ballads and tunes from both sides. \nThe Lovekyn Consort play instruments of the type originally used for their music. \nPatricia Hammond – Voice; William Summers – Flute\, Recorder; Stephen Carpenter – Lute\, Vihuela\, Guitar \nDoors open at 19:00\, music starts at 19:30.

SUMMARY:Jamie Oliver Unveils Food Waste Pop-up Café
DESCRIPTION:The new pop-up food café is opening in East London by Jamie Oliver\,TV chef and Hotpoint. It will offer a tasting menu of unique dishes based on the top 10 most wasted foods in the UK. \nThe café will also be serving surplus food from the local area wherever possible and will operate on a pay-as-you-feel basis\, with all proceeds going to charity FoodCycle. \n \nThe public can book tables now via the Hotpoint website here\, or the café will also be accepting walk-ins. \n\nWhere: 133-135 Bethnal Green Road\, East London\n\n\nWhy: Run by home appliance expert Hotpoint and officially opened by Jamie Oliver\, the Fresh Thinking Café aims to get the nation thinking differently about the food in their fridges\, after a quarter of Brits (24%) admit they waste food simply because they forget what they have in the fridge. Hotpoint’s research found that UK households are throwing away almost 10% of their food shop each week which equates to £271.44 of edible food every year.\n\nThe Hotpoint team will be coming to show you that there are delicious alternative ways to use up your leftover food\, saving you money and energy. It marks the finale of Hotpoint’s Fresh Thinking for Forgotten Food campaign\, which encourages everyone to think differently about ‘forgotten food’ in the kitchens. \nEvery dish on the Fresh Thinking Café menu is based on suggestions from the public\, and uses surplus food from local suppliers wherever possible. The tasting menu features a variety of imaginative dishes incorporating bread\, bagged salad and fresh veg – just some of the nation’s most wasted foods. \n \n  \nExtra information on the campaign: \nJamie Oliver says: \n“Good food is a beautiful thing\, it brings people together\, it can cheer you up\, and it can give you all the goodness you need to fuel your day – which is why me and the guys at Hotpoint don’t think any of it should be wasted! I’m really excited to share tips for cutting food waste\, and beautiful recipes that celebrate ingredients that often get thrown away. Together with Hotpoint’s waste-savvy equipment\, I want to show everyone how easy it is to cut unnecessary waste in the kitchen\, and dish up delicious food at the same time.” \nJennifer Taylor\, Head of Brand for Hotpoint\, commented: \n“Throughout the summer we’ve been on a mission to get the UK to think differently and get creative with the leftovers in their fridge and cupboards. People from all over the country have submitted some brilliant recipes based on the top 10 wasted foods and we’re thrilled to be serving a handful of these in our Fresh Thinking café and offering up some inspiration for how we can all think differently about the forgotten food in our kitchens.” \n \nJamie Oliver Q&A: Tackling food waste at home \nWhy is this campaign so important? \n“As you can see from the stats\, reducing food waste is a massive challenge. And it’s something I really care about\, particularly as\, with just a few simple tricks up your sleeve\, it can be so easily avoided. The most powerful weapons against food waste are knowing how to cook\, shopping well and\, of course\, storing food properly. Leftovers just need a little bit of clever thinking and you can nearly always rustle up something amazing.” \nWhat are your tips for keeping food fresher for longer? \n“First up\, you need to know what’s in the your fridge\, so nothing gets forgotten at the back. Keeping it nicely ordered is the first step\, making sure you always select the best place for your food. Heat rises\, so keep meat and fish on the bottom shelves where it’s cooler\, dairy products in the middle and things like condiments and homemade salad dressings at the top (and inside the doors) for quick inspiration when you open it up. As a rule of thumb\, set your fridge at 4°C or below. Store leftovers with clear labels\, including dates\, so you know how long you have left to use up food in a new recipe. Keeping veg in a separate crisper drawer is essential for keeping it fresh\, the Hotpoint one filters ethylene gas that veg naturally produces\, keeping it fresher for longer – it’s so clever.” \nWhere do you start\, when cooking with leftovers? \n“Sometimes\, when you look in the fridge and see random bits\, it can be hard to know what to do. But cooking with leftovers is a brilliant way to get creative. If you start with a basic idea like pasta or an omelette\, you can easily mix up the veg you want to use to add flavour. Soups are a great place to start\, too – especially hearty Italian soups like Pappa al pomodoro (bread and tomato soup) because you can use stale bread. The same for big salads like Panzanella that you can put your twist on\, and make croutons from any bread that’s on the turn.” \nBook a table here: www.hotpoint.co.uk/Pages/Fresh-Thinking-Roadshow \n \nAbout Hotpoint \nWhirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) is the world’s leading major home appliance company\, with approximately $21 billion in annual sales\, 92\,000 employees and 70 manufacturing and technology research centers in 2017. SUMMARY:Launch of Black Cultural Activism Map
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Black Cultural Activism Map\, the first of a two-part series of events celebrating and connecting visions\, stories\, lessons and legacies of Black and Brown cultural resistance in the UK. \nThe Stuart Hall Foundation has commissioned young artists\, activists\, designers and researchers to explore moments of cultural resistance in the UK through individuals\, organisations and political interventions. \nThis launch event will bring together three of the commissioned arts collectives Skin Deep\, Voices that Shake! and RECLAIM for a dynamic afternoon of performances\, film screenings\, artistic presentations\, panel discussions\, singing for justice and more. \nTickets \n£10 Full price / £6 Concessions \nWe have limited number of free access tickets available\, get in touch with us to find out more. \n*We call this the Black Cultural Activism Map to honour the legacies of political blackness from which we have grown. We wish to be inclusive of black\, brown and diasporic peoples. We recognise that our work is part of an ongoing conversation. \nBlack Cultural Activism Map has been supported with funding from Arts Council England and Unbound Philanthropy. This event is supported by Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London. \nArtists and contributors \nSkin Deep is a London-based multimedia platform that amplifies voices of colour through the discussion of race and culture\, inspiring much needed conversations around themes that are usually misrepresented or depoliticised by the mainstream media. Skin Deep’s multimedia project is based around a print publication\, live events and interactive digital exhibition that responds to the theme: MOVEMENT(S). Through original nonfiction\, fiction\, poetry\, artwork and illustration Skin Deep have invited their contributors to think about\, through and around the political journeys of black and brown activists. \nVoices that Shake! is a collective that brings together young people\, artists and campaigners to develop creative responses to social injustice. Using a model of personal transformation and structural change\, Shake! challenges established imbalanced power-bases and re-imagine new infrastructures in opposition to capitalism and colonialism. Shake! will deliver a multimedia performance showcase (musical oral history\, storytelling\, spoken word\, film\, soundscapes and visual collage) collaboratively devised between four artist facilitators from SHAKE!. Featured artists include Sai Murray\, Dhelia Snoussi\, Globe Poets and Nawi Collective. \nRECLAIM is a youth leadership and social change organisation. It was set up in Manchester in 2007 to identify and support young leaders from an intensely pressurised community. Their work allows young people to develop their skills and potential and to build their pathway to make the world a better place for all. Through their commission RECLAIM will unveil the hidden cultures in Manchester merging art\, politics and creativity and look at how linking these mediums can say so much about the world we live in today. They will revisit\, reimagine and revive stories of black and brown activism from the past – stories from the north that have shaped the lives of many in Manchester communities today.

SUMMARY:Organ Reframed: Éliane Radigue and Hildur Guðnadóttir
DESCRIPTION:The second evening of Organ Reframed will open with a new piece from one of Hollywood’s most sought after film composers\, Hildur Guðnadóttir\, currently making headlines as the newly signed composer for the upcoming film Joker with Joaquin Phoenix\, making her the first woman to compose a score for a live-action DC Comics film. Previous scores include Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Mary Magdalene. Hildur has also released four critically acclaimed solo albums on touch and written widely for theatre and dance. Hildur will be performing her new work live with James McVinnie and the London Contemporary Orchestra Soloists. \nThe latter half of the evening promises to be an historic event for contemporary music. Éliane Radigue\, a pioneer of musical evolution since the 1960’s\, has composed her first work for organ\, which will be performed by Frédéric Blondy. After the performance there will be a screening of a short documentary of Éliane working on the commission which will afford attendees a rare glimpse into her artistic process. \nNow in its third year\, Organ Reframed\, is the only festival of its kind in the UK and focuses on commissioning innovative new music to introduce artists and audiences to the versatility of the organ. The 2018 festival includes nine spectacular world premieres of cutting edge new works from composers at the forefront of contemporary music.
