SUMMARY:Upset The Rhythm - Cafe OTO showcase w/ Rattle\, Me Lost Me\, Quinie\, Es\, Dog Chocolate\, Mary Currie
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nRATTLE\nQUINIE\nES\nSHAKE CHAIN (DJ set)\nTuesday 25 November\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/U19e86228aea \nRATTLE released their third album ‘Encircle’ on Upset The Rhythm at the start of the 2025. ‘Encircle’ sees the drumming duo expand their unique experiments in rhythm\, metre and tension. Rattle have honed the four songs that make up ‘Encircle’ by playing them live over the last few years\, adapting and stretching them into endlessly inventive new shapes\, playing with the concept of time and expectation. With ‘Encircle’ Rattle have grown\, writing songs alive with elemental power. They build-up and disintegrate\, existing in two places at once\, embracing the nuance\, tracing the circle’s edge. These are modes of song as pure gesture and eternal imagination\, refined in mirrors after midnight. Rattle have toured the UK with Animal Collective and Thurston Moore and toured Europe with The Julie Ruin and Protomartyr\, and have also performed with Hot Snakes\, Bill Orcutt Quartet and Codeine. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/encircle \nQUINIE released her her third album ‘Forefowk\, Mind Me’ with Upset The Rhythm back in May this year. The record is largely sung in Scots language\, one of Scotland’s three official languages along with Gaelic and English. “Scots gives me a way of expressing myself which is connected directly with the landscapes I love. It brings the songs alive and it is a fascinating language. The name of the record is in Scots – Forefowk means the people who came before\, or ancestors. When we say ‘mind me\,’ we can mean a few things- remind\, remember\, watch over or care for me. The record explores how tradition needs to be constantly reconnected with\, built upon\, looked after\, and shared.” To develop this record\, Quinie travelled across Argyll with her horse. They went on a pilgrimage of sorts through the ancient landscapes of the West of Scotland to explore the interconnected relationships between people\, ancestors\, animals\, and place. \nhttps://www.quinie.co.uk/ \nES released an incredible EP titled ‘Fantasy’ in 2023 (on Upset The Rhythm). Echoing the legendary Pylon or the later\, disco-inspired releases from PIL\, tracks like ‘Emergency’ and ‘Unreal’ blend the band’s established disjunctive style of gothic restlessness with brighter\, poppy\, and danceable tones. These stylistically unwind in transition with the increasingly claustrophobic pieces like ‘Too Late’ and ‘Swallowed Whole’\, syncopating a parallel design of the frantic and the fashionable. Es deconstruct our modern wreckage of personhood and self-deceit\, granting a sense of solidarity inside alienation. This show represents Es’ final show for Upset The Rhythm\, as the musical project winds up this December. \nhttps://esband.bandcamp.com/ \n  \nUpset The Rhythm presents… \nME LOST ME\nMARY CURRIE & THE PGs – FLAMING TUNES set\nDOG CHOCOLATE\nNORMIL HAWAIIANS (DJ set)\nWednesday 26 November\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/S8d66c1f896c \nME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling\, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully weave together disparate genres\, drawing influence from folk\, art pop\, noise\, ambient and improvised music. In 2023 Me Lost Me released the critically regarded album ‘RPG’ and toured extensively in support of the release. On Me Lost Me’s fourth full-length\, This Material Moment – released this June through Upset the Rhythm – she has created an “emotionally raw” album\, her most honest and vulnerable yet. Me Lost Me presents sound reaching in opposite directions\, straddling time towards the archaic and timeless traditions of folktales\, and towards the possible and potential futures of pastoral Britain and the world at large. This is an album which uses words as a material\, a playful tool for experimentation\, full of metaphor\, abstraction and analogies. Jayne affirms\, “it has softness and anger\, humour\, hope and despair\, intensity of feeling in all directions expressed as textures\, objects\, places.” \nhttps://www.melostme.com/ \nMARY CURRIE released a collaborative 7” with Robert Sotelo last October on Upset The Rhythm entitled ‘Dream Songs’. Not only did the title capture the hazy\, reflective nature of the music it also expounds on the mysterious origin of the tracks. Mary Currie is best known as half of touchstone DIY experimentalists Flaming Tunes\, alongside Gareth Williams (of This Heat). Currie also performed in Officer! with Mick Hobbs amongst others. For this performance Mary appears alongside her bandmates Alison Craig\, Marcus Holdaway\, Nick Haeffner and William Hayter\, as The PGs performing songs from their Flaming Tunes repertoire. \nhttps://flamingtunes.bandcamp.com/album/flaming-tunes \nDOG CHOCOLATE sound like a crowded room but are actually four individuals. Abandoning notions of elegance\, cred and professionalism they embrace the ramshackle\, instant and fun\, capturing a vivid spontaneity with their music. Their sound is a shabby\, fast\, over-excited ball of wet fur falling down the stairs\, knocking over plant pots along the way and staining the carpet. With an average song time of 2 minutes\, Dog Chocolate are on to the next treat before fully digesting the last. Chewing up bits of punk\, post-punk\, noise and pop\, Matthew and Robert’s guitars race around each other like wasps\, pitch-shifting and phasing all over the place while Jono’s rolled-up-newspaper drums chase them round the room. The band have released a split LP with Ravioli Me Away and two full length albums on Upset The Rhythm. Dog Chocolate’s new album is due out early 2026. \nhttps://dogchocolate.bandcamp.com \n

SUMMARY:Music and Malady
DESCRIPTION:Following the enthusiasm for our evening of ‘900 Years of Music and Medicine’ in June 2023\, just before the closure of the Great Hall for renovation and conservation\, we are holding a further medical themed evening – ‘More Music and Malady’. This will celebrate the re-opening of the North Wing\, with a miscellany of music about lithotomy\, doctors and illnesses – both real and imagined – including music from Couperin to G&S\, Purcell to Cole Porter\, Bernstein to Beethoven.\n\nThe programme begins with the founding of the hospital and explores eye watering 18th century surgical procedures – with original instruments! You’ll hear about a range of ailments of mind and body contracted through love – and some possible remedies from some rather dodgy doctors. You’ll find that the doctor-patient relationship may go beyond what is considered proper. And finally we will leave you with part of Beethoven’s Op132 – a thanksgiving for restored heath and healing. The narrative will be woven together and subverted in equal measure by CMF Patron Simon Callow and BBC Radio 3 presenter Donald Macleod.\n\n\nPerformers include Claire Ward\, soprano\, George Robarts\, baritone\, Ed Picton Turbervill\, piano\, Nathaniel Mander\, harpsichord\, James Larter\, percussion\, members of the Paddington Trio\, and other CMF artists.\n\n‘More Music and Malady’ will be presented on Tuesday 25th November\, in Barts Great Hall in the North Wing of Barts Hospital\, at 7pm. Seating will\, like last time\, be arranged in small tables of 4.

SUMMARY:Jens Hesse - Glitch & Glamour: Perfectly Imperfect
DESCRIPTION:Cris Contini Contemporary London concludes a successful year with a solo exhibition by German artist Jens Hesse\, Glitch & Glamour: Perfectly Imperfect. The show celebrates Hesse’s distinctive painterly language\, where the precision of digital aesthetics meets the sensual imperfection of tactile surfaces. His works unfold in the space between these poles\, translating the technical errors of our media-saturated era into gestures of painterly intimacy. A former fashion designer\, Hesse approaches painting as both fabric and image. The surface — sometimes corduroy\, sometimes bouclé — is never neutral; it recalls texture\, touch\, and wear. These tactile foundations become the site where the “glitch” appears: not as a mistake\, but as a revelation. What the screen hides behind its promise of seamless perfection\, Hesse reveals through brushstrokes\, layering\, and distortion.\nHis portraits and figurative scenes seem at once familiar and disturbed. Pixels bleed into brush marks; compression lines cut across faces; digital interference coexists with the softness of oil and textile fibers. These works do not imitate technology — they expose its fragility. By transforming visual defects into painterly language\, Hesse reclaims the human presence within the technological gaze.\nThe exhibition’s title\, Glitch & Glamour\, evokes this duality. “Glamour” — the polished image\, the seductive surface — meets “glitch”\, the breakdown that disrupts illusion. Hesse situates beauty within the fault line between these states. In doing so\, he reminds us that imperfection is not the opposite of glamour but its hidden core: the shimmer that occurs precisely when control falters.\nIn an age obsessed with clarity\, correction\, and resolution\, Hesse’s paintings invite us to dwell in ambiguity. They ask us to look again — not for perfection\, but for presence. Within the glitch\, we find the trace of the hand\, the residue of the body\, the persistence of the real. Perfectly imperfect. \n  \nTitle: Jens Hesse – Glitch & Glamour: Perfectly Imperfect\nVenue: Cris Contini Contemporary\, 1 Lonsdale Road W11 2BY\, Notting Hill\, London\nDates: 27 November – 10 January 2026 \nClosure for the Christmas holidays: from 21st December 2025 until 5th January 2026

SUMMARY:Conversations around the kitchen table: Kincső Bede
DESCRIPTION:On photography\, belonging\, inherited histories\, and the launch of Porcelain and Wool.\n\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation between curator Catherine Troiano and Kincső Bede\, exploring Bede’s photographic practice and its intersection with questions of belonging and legacy. \nA Hungarian visual artist from Romania\, Bede is fascinated by the communist past of her homeland. Her work evokes a personal view on collective histories that carved a deep chasm between generations: that of her parents\, who lived through communism and the regime change\, and that of Bede\, who inherited their stories\, experiences and their trauma. Bede’s practice delves into the complexities of cultural heritage\, in a bid to move closer to her parents and the versions of their lives dominated by the voice\, fears\, desires\, secrets and paranoia of Nicolae Ceaușescu and his Securitate. \nIn this conversation with Troiano\, Bede will reflect on her experience as part of the Székely Hungarian minority in Transylvania\, Romania\, and how photography has mediated her view of tradition\, self-definition and faith: ‘my parents’ best-kept secret was their beliefs\, their language\, and their souls. This is me.’ \nThe event is organised in collaboration with the V&A on the occasion of the symposium Fluid Futures: Recalibrating Land and History in Global Eastern Europe (29th November\, V&A South Kensington). It also celebrates the recent publication of Bede’s monograph Porcelain and Wool (Hectic Books\, 2025). The book’s title symbolises a delicate balance—porcelain representing fragility and refinement\, while wool conveying warmth and resilience. Bede’s photographic style weaves together these contrasts\, employing intimate storytelling to question inherited cultural codes while reimagining her place within them. Her work captures a tension between pride and critique\, juxtaposing rural environments with modern elements to create an interplay between past and present that is is central to Bede’s practice. Through scattered vignettes of traditional motifs and reinterpreted family stories\, viewers are invited to assemble the fragmented pieces into a cohesive whole. \nAfter the conversation\, we are holding a casual meet and greet\, where attendees will have the chance to buy the book and get it signed. \nKincső Bede (b.1995) is a Hungarian visual artist from Romania\, who grew up in a small city in Transylvania. She is fascinated by the communist past of her homeland\, the power of the leader Nicolae Ceaușescu\, the control exercised by the security agency Securitate\, and how this history is passed down across the generations. Currently\, Bede lives and works in Budapest\, Hungary and she studied at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. She is part of the Studio of Young Photographers. In 2020 she won the photography scholarship of the Association of Hungarian Photographers. In the same year she was among the winners of Carte Blanche Students\, a scholarship founded by Paris Photo. The works of the four winners were exhibited at the Parisian Gare du Nord. Her series\, titled ’’Three Colours I Know in This World’’ was chosen for the 10 New Talent 2020 programme by the curators of BredaPhoto Festival and was exhibited in The Netherlands. She has exhibited in several cities of Hungary\, Romania\, Slovakia\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, France\, Italy and the US. In 2021\, thanks to TOBE Gallery\, she exhibits at Unseen Amsterdam and she is selected for Paris Photo fair’s Curiosa sector\, curated by Shoair Mavlian. In 2022\, her photographs are exhibited at PhotoVogue Festival Milan. In 2023\, she participates in the show “Self on Stage” in Galeria Anita Beckers Frankfurt. Anthony Vaccarello curates an exhibition for her at Saint Laurent Rive Droite\, Paris and at YSL Beverly Hills LA\, and on the same occasion YSL publishes her fanzine. Bede is nominated for the Esterhazy Art Award and thus exhibits in Ludwig Museum Budapest. In 2024\, hECTIC bOOKs launches her first photobook\, displaying her œuvre to date.
