SUMMARY:Václav Havel European Dialogues 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Centre\, together with the Cardiff University\, Oxford University and UCL\, and in collaboration with the Václav Havel Library\, organises the second annual symposium celebrating the legacy of Václav Havel. Starting in Cardiff on 10th of October\, the event will then move to Oxford on 11th October and finish at London’s UCL on 12th of October. \nFollowing a word of welcome from Přemysl Pela (Czech Centre London) we feature a discussion with celebrated Czech author Jáchym Topol\, author of i.a. A Sensitive Person (Eng. trans.\, Yale\, 2023); Angel Station (Eng. trans.\, Dalkey Archive\, 2017); The Devil’s Workshop (Eng. trans.\, Portobello\, 2013); Gargling With Tar (Eng. trans.\, Portobello\, 2010); and City/Sister/Silver (Eng. trans. Catbird\, 2000)\, who will talk about practicing creative literature in the final years of Czechoslovak Communism and the early years thereafter. \nFollowed by a roundtable discussion: \n‘Gaming the System: Language\, Conformism\, and Breaking Conventions\, From Václav Havel’s Absurdism to the Age of X’ \n2023 marks the 60th anniversary of The Garden Party\, one of Havel’s most famous plays. Often understood as an Absurdist critique of modern bureaucracy\, the play is also a tale about an ambitious young man who becomes a master of ‘gaming the system’. Havel’s protagonist Hugo thus embodies a paradox: he shows the extraordinary social pressure placed on people to conform to social expectations if they are to get ahead in life\, but he simultaneously demonstrates the enormous creativity through which they find ways to ‘game the system’ and break the rules. This round-table discussion will explore this curious dynamic of conformism and unconventionality\, of obedience and rule-bending\, of socialization and sabotage\, and will consider how far Havel’s mid-20th-century example of formalized bureaucratic communication (and the implicit parallel to authoritarian power structures) holds for early 21st-century culture and in particular for the ways social media have changed the way we interact for better and for ill. \nDiscussants: \nTim Beasley-Murray is Associate Professor of European thought and Culture at UCL and works on literature\, politics and ideas in English\, French\, German and sometimes Czech and Slovak. He has written a book on games (and how they can be serious) that will come out later this year. \nBarbara Day arrived as a student in Prague in 1965\, just in time to see the original productions of Havel’s plays and to experience the great surge of theatre activity. She maintained her connections with Czechoslovakia through the years of the Soviet occupation and consequent ‘Normalisation’. In 1985 she created the Bristol Czech Fest and the same year began to work with the ‘underground university’\, through the Oxford-based Jan Hus Educational Foundation. In 1999 she published The Velvet Philosophers and in 2019 Trial by Theatre: Reports on the Czech Drama. \nErin Plunkett is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Hertfordshire. She is co-editor with Ivan Chvatík of the Selected Writings of Jan Patočka: Care for the Soul (Bloomsbury\, 2022)\, and author of A Philosophy of the Essay: Scepticism\, Experience and Style (Bloomsbury\, 2020). \nDavid S. Danaher is a Professor of and Program Head for Slavic Studies in the Department of German\, Nordic\, and Slavic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His two most recent books are Reading Václav Havel (University of Toronto Press\, 2015) and\, co-edited with Kieran Williams\, Václav Havel’s Meanings: His Key Words\, Their Context and Legacy (Karolinum Press and University of Chicago Press\, forthcoming 2023). He has taught a monograph course on Havel’s writing to undergraduates from all disciplines since 2002. \nModerator: \nPeter Zusi\, Associate Professor of Czech and Comparative Literature\, UCL. \nThe roundtable discussion will be followed by a wine reception. \nThe 2023 Václav Havel European Dialogues are supported by the Sekyra Foundation and are an initiative of the Václav Havel Library. \n  \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/vaclav-havel-european-dialogues-2023-tickets-719670131737?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. Advertised end times may be subject to change.\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack History Month 2023 #SalutingOurSisters

SUMMARY:From Pub to Pulpit - Concert
DESCRIPTION:A hugely successful concert tour that has seen thousands of people across the country singing together to turn folk songs into hymns will have a final performance in Camden Town on 14th October as a fundraiser for St Michael’s Church. \n\n\n\nThe critically acclaimed From Pub to Pulpit tour features Camden folk group Broomdasher and The Pagoda Project and has wowed full houses at more than twenty Cathedrals and Festivals\, celebrating Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 150th birthday. St Michael’s in Camden Town will be the only Central London venue of the year-long tour. \n\n\n\nIn the concert\, the audience joined the organ\, choir and two groups in a unique and rousing tribute to Vaughan Williams\, a renowned folk song collector. SUMMARY:Showstopper! The Improvised Musical
DESCRIPTION:The incredible ‘Showstopper! The Improvised Musical’ is on a nationwide tour and will be performing on selected Mondays\, booking at the Cambridge Theatre Mon 16 October 2023 – Mon 18 December 2023.  \n\n\n\n\n“Amazing! Absolutely brilliant! Congratulations\, The Showstoppers\, you took my 24hr challenge and succeeded 200%” ELAINE PAIGE \n\n\n\n\nSpontaneous musical comedy at its finest\, it is the first-ever long-form improv show to have a full West End run and to be nominated and win an Olivier Award! This is a must-see show\, completely improvised and genuinely entirely different every night! \n\n\n\nFor those who haven’t yet experienced the live phenomenon\, ‘ Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is a fully realised musical created on the spot from audience suggestions. The cast transforms suggestions for settings\, genres\, musical styles and even the show’s name into ingenious storylines with hilarious characters. From Pink Floyd to Stephen Sondheim\, via a primary school\, Ancient Egypt\, or a mattress shop – if the audience can suggest it\, The Showstoppers will perform it. It’s hugely funny to watch. \n\n\n\nThe group are long-running\, well-known and renowned for their improvisation work. Most cast members have also received acclaim in their own right. The Showstoppers have been working on the show since 2008\, figuring out how to improvise in increasingly esoteric styles\, including musical\, dance\, straight theatre\, and film genres\, to name but a few. \n\n\n\nIn the Autumn of 2015\, it became the first long-form improv show to have an entire run in the West End at the Apollo Theatre\, for which it won the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment & Family Show.

Phew was a founding member of the legendary Japanese punk band Aunt Sally. After the band’s breakup in 1979\, she continued her career as a solo artist\, releasing a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1980 and her first solo album\, ‘Phew’\, with Conny Plank\, Holger Czukay of CAN\, and Jaki Liebezeit in 1981. In 1992\, her third album\, ‘Our Likeness’\, was released on MUTE (recently reissued)\, again at Conny’s studio\, with Jaki Liebezeit of CAN\, Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten\, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. Since the beginning of the 2010s\, she has released a series of works that combine voice and electronic music and has gained international recognition as a forward-facing electronic artist. She has also released collaborative works with Ana da Silva (Raincoats)\, Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms) and others. Phew’s expansive ‘Vertical Jamming’ was released on vinyl for the first time via Disciples last year\, whilst Mute recently released her stunning record ‘New Decade’; a stark\, haunted album populated by voices that intone empty pleasantries in English and Japanese\, against a backdrop of fractured\, dubbed-out electronics.https://phewjapan.bandcamp.com/music \n\n\n\nALISON COTTON is a viola player based in London working in composition and improvisation. Her debut album ’All Is Quiet at the Ancient Theatre’ was released in 2018\, firstly on cassette on Bloxham Tapes\, followed by a vinyl release on Cardinal Fuzz (UK) and Feeding Tube (USA). In July 2019\, her long-form piece\, ‘Behind the Spiderweb Gates\,’ was released on the Australian label Longform Editions. As well as the viola\, she uses an array of other instruments (her voice\, harmonium\, percussion\, recorder\, omnichord\, shruti box and piano) to create long\, haunting folk drones. Cotton’s new album\, ‘The Portrait You Painted of Me’\, is a 6-track record – her first for Rocket Recordings. ‘Mumurations Over the Moor’ is a wordless piece of layered vocals drifting like fog towards a sunset over the green undulations of North East England. ‘The Last Wooden Ship’ evokes the shipyards of Sunderland\, laced with piano and percussion events\, while her voice calls out like a siren urging listeners to a rocky demise.https://alisoncotton-uk.bandcamp.com \n\n\n\nME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling\, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully push the boundaries of genre. Led by Newcastle-based artist Jayne Dent who takes influence from folk\, art pop\, noise\, ambient and improvised music\, the project has transformed since 2017 from a solo endeavour to an expanded group\, regularly collaborating with acclaimed North-East jazz musicians Faye MacCalman and John Pope. Me Lost Me’s music has been described in The Guardian as “stripping folk back to its bones while letting its future echoes bleed out” and by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson as a “brilliant peculiar noise”. Me Lost Me’s incredible new album ‘RPG’ is due for release on July 7th via Upset The Rhythm.https://www.melostme.com/ \n\n\n\nANA DA SILVA is a founding member and songwriter of the pioneering post-punk band The Raincoats. Across four daring full-length records\, The Raincoats helped shape the timeless notion that punk is what you make it – an act of raw expression\, not any one sound. The Raincoats have offered creative and spiritual inspiration for several generations of artists. They set a crucial precedent for feminist work within a DIY punk context\, marked all the while by Ana’s poetic lyrical style and innovative noise guitar playing. After The Raincoats’ hiatus in 1984\, Ana collaborated with The Go-Betweens\, This Heat’s Charles Hayward and choreographer/dancer Gaby Agis. In 2005\, Ana released her solo debut\, ‘The Lighthouse’ – a self-recorded collection of spare\, elegant experiments in electronic indie-pop. Ana has also collaborated with Phew on an extraordinary album ‘Island’ released by Newhere Music in 2018.http://www.anadasilva.net/ \n\n\n\nSUNROOF is the pairing of Daniel Miller and Gareth Jones. Their new album\, ‘Electronic Music Improvisations Volume 2’ is available via the Parallel Series of Mute. ‘Electronic Music Improvisations Volume 2’ is a set of eight improvised modular electronic music instrument pieces recorded at the duo’s respective home studios. The recording sessions followed release of their debut from 2021 but where Vol. 1 was the result of four decades of friendship and collaboration\, this new album came together in a relatively short space of time. Recorded in the same spirit as their previous sessions – with no pre-planning and no rehearsal – they met up with “unpatched” modular systems\, and began improvising. Without any of the parameters they followed in the first sessions\, the duo allowed the pieces to expand naturally\, keeping editing to a minimum.https://mute.ffm.to/sunroof-emivol2

SUMMARY:LANDE HEKT + SUPERMILK + CHARLEY STONE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents…LANDE HEKTSUPERMILKCHARLEY STONEMonday 23 OctoberThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £9 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/s8612f0fbfaf \n\n\n\nLANDE HEKT crafted politically aware\, heart-on-sleeve\, punchy yet tender\, punk-flecked songs with her band Muncie Girls\, more recently she turned her hand to an even more personal songwriting approach by writing a solo record – 2021’s Going To Hell. The debut full-length was released via queer and trans run independent label Get Better Records and documented her experience coming out as gay. It set out her stall as a solo artist with supreme storytelling abilities and a knack for understatedly luminous melodies. Lande’s music sits beautifully alongside such artists as The Wedding Present\, The Replacements and Sharon Van Etten. \n\n\n\nLande met 2022 armed with a whole new collection of song-form vignettes and musings on her life for her second album House Without a View. This record continued to explore ideas of queer identity\, as well as her changing relationship with gender\, dealing with childhood trauma\, and confronting the isolation and period of adjustment brought by the pandemic. This year Lande Hekt continues her poignant musical introspection with two new singles ‘Pottery Class’ and ‘Axis’. Bittersweet ‘Pottery Class’ captures the feeling of yearning for someone and longing for a space to share with that person. In the song\, Lande reflects: “we could move to the city\, go to shows and join a pottery class / But you’d always be overwhelmed by everything that moves too fast / I don’t care where we live\, I just want you back.” \n\n\n\nhttps://landehekt.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nSUPERMILK is a band from North London comprising members of Doe\, Cheerbleederz\, Nervus and Onsind. From 2007 to the present Stone has both performed solo and played with a number of artists including the Priscillas\, the New Royal Family/the Famous Cocks\, Abba Stripes\, Deptford Beach Babes\, Charlotte Hatherley\, Ye Nuns\, Joanne Joanne and Salad. In addition\, Stone currently plays in the Fallen Women\, Desperate Journalist\, and Sleeper.https://charleystone.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Make Britain Smile - Charity Board Game Day
DESCRIPTION:This October half term\, Asmodee – one of the UK’s top family games distributors – is hosting the ultimate board game day at Draughts Waterloo to raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. \n\n\n\nAsmodee\, one of the world’s biggest board game companies\, are on a mission – to bring some fun to families this half term and put a smile on everyone’s face and some joy into hearts. So make sure you and your families have Thursday\, 26th October\, firmly in your diaries.  \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome to play or learn how to play some incredibly fun board games this half-term holiday. We will have games that children and teens from 5 – 15 will enjoy\, plus demonstrators to show everyone how it is all done.  \n\n\n\nAnd who better to team up with than the well-known games café – Draughts in Waterloo\, London\, who are all about board games and having fun? This spectacular Play Day is open to all. Booking is essential so you don’t miss out!  \n\n\n\nThe fun and games begin at 10 am and last until 6 pm. Families can book into a three-hour slot with those all-important\, professional games demonstrators who will make the rules simple and the game play exhilarating – the perfect solution for the half-term slump\, parents – we got you! \n\n\n\nFamous games like Dobble\, Dobble Connect\, Taco\, Cat\, Goat\, Cheese\, Pizza and Bananagrams will feature in the day alongside Christmas hot list games such as Bunny Hops!\, Pass the Bomb\, and Toodles – there is something for everyone. \n\n\n\nOn the day\, donations are encouraged\, with every penny going to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust (https://www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/) to inspire young people aged 8-24 to believe in a brighter future living through and beyond cancer. Lindsay Nehorai\, the Trust’s Fundraising Manager\, said: “Asmodee’s games play a big role in bringing young people together on Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust adventures. No trip is complete without an iconic night of Dobble below deck.  \n\n\n\nYoung people living through and beyond cancer often feel isolated from others their own age\, so the laughter and the friendships they make while playing games together is an integral part of rediscovering themselves and believing in a brighter future.”  \n\n\n\nThe idea of a Play Day came from Asmodee’s Head of Product – Commercial\, Greg Stanton\, who said: “October half term can place a big demand on families\, especially when trying to keep the children happy and entertained. We wanted to help and decided to put on a fabulous day for everyone to enjoy with any donations made\, benefitting the lives of children in the UK who are coping with cancer.  We hope everyone will have something to smile about this half term with our Play Day special\,” he said. \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with Draughts\, Events Manager Dan Gyte added\, “When our friends at Asmodee came to us with this idea\, we immediately said yes.  We all need some fun in our lives\, and this seemed to be such a positive initiative for families this half term. Our whole ethos is about playing games\, and Asmodee is helping more people to play more games more often\, so we are perfect partners. The fact that we can put on this event and also help young people who need support after illness\, alongside the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust\, is an absolute bonus.”

SUMMARY:PROTOMARTYR + ES
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nPROTOMARTYRESThursday 26 OctoberElectric Ballroom184 Camden High St\, Camden Town\, London\, NW1 8QP7pm-11pm | £17.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/hca4d1d3c365 \n\n\n\nPROTOMARTYR are a post-punk band from Detroit who have mastered the art of evoking place: the grinding Midwest humility of their hometown\, as well as the x-rayed elucidation of America that comes with their vantage. Protomartyr—vocalist Joe Casey\, guitarist Greg Ahee\, drummer Alex Leonard\, and bassist Scott Davidson—have become synonymous with caustic\, impressionistic assemblages of politics and poetry\, the literal and oblique. \n\n\n\nThe group’s forthcoming sixth album\, recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo\, Texas\, is called Formal Growth In The Desert. And though frontman Joe Casey did have a humbling experience staring at awe-inspiring Sonoran rock formations and reckoning with his own smallness in the scheme of things – as recounted in the single “Elimination Dances” – the title is not necessarily a nod to the sandy expanses of the southwest. Detroit\, too\, is like a desert. “The desert is more of a metaphor or symbol\,” Casey says\, “of emotional deserts\, or a place or time that seems to lack life.” The desert brings an existential awareness that is ultimately internal. Formal Growth In The Desert is a 12-song testament to “getting on with life\,” even when it feels impossibly hard. “I was trying to find a way forward after some pretty heavy things\, without lyrically resorting to\, Oh my god\, my life sucks\,” Casey says. “I was trying to see what was beyond the trouble.” The titles of the two opening songs—the moody “Make Way” followed by the charging ennui of “For Tomorrow”—complete that thought. A filmic sensibility is manifest in the band’s dynamic\, spacious sound and Casey’s storytelling\, too\, whether he’s critiquing ominous techno-capitalism or processing aging\, the future\, and the possibility of love.http://protomartyrband.com/ \n\n\n\nES returned this April with an incredible new EP called ‘Fantasy’. A four-track contact-high anxiety amid fact and facsimile\, this release attempts to define a sound that still resonates in an increasingly confused public theatre\, where cerebral dreams manifest in corrupt fascination. Echoing the legendary Pylon or the later\, disco-inspired releases from PIL\, tracks like ‘Emergency’ and ‘Unreal’ blend the band’s established disjunctive style of gothic restlessness with brighter\, poppy\, and danceable tones. These stylistically unwind in transition with the increasingly claustrophobic pieces like ‘Too Late’ and ‘Swallowed Whole’\, syncopating a parallel design of the frantic and the fashionable. Es deconstruct our modern wreckage of personhood and self-deceit\, granting a sense of solidarity inside alienation. Inside ‘Fantasy’ we visualize our own estrangement\, and it is only when this mirror fades that we find the tools to fight back.https://esband.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:LOOPSEL + JJULIUS + CATE KENNAN
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nLOOPSELJJULIUSCATE KENNANFriday 27 OctoberMOTH Club\, Old Trades Hall\, Valette St\, London\, E9 6NU7.30pm-10pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/zc893d7209b7 \n\n\n\nLOOPSEL conjures music like foggily remembered dreams. The songs on her new album  Öga for Öga are like paths in the forest forest\, are heavily\, almost treacherously\, reverberated\, with finger-plucked guitars acting as your signposts amongst the flora and fauna of field recordings\, pads\, and the cool\, calm voice of Elin Engström. The album is the second from Engström as Loopsel. She is a Gothenburg-based musician and one-half of the group Monokultur and the team behind the tiny Mamma’s Mystersika Jukebox label. During what seemed like the nadir of the pandemic\, the blurry\, otherworldly sounds emanating from their living room snaked into the DFA office\, where the otherwise dutifully DIY pair found the scale of worldwide release and distribution.https://loopsel.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nJJULIUS is the name of the swirling\, singular world built by Julius Pierstorff\, somewhere deep in the cobwebs of Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where dub and kosmische and post-punk sounds all sit around and tell ghost stories to each other. Originally a fully DIY project on Mamma’s Mysteriska Jukebox\, the label he runs with his partner Loopsel\, his latest long player\, VOL. 2 was released worldwide with New York’s seminal DFA Records. Now\, he emerges from the shadows to play some shows; it’ll be louder and looser\, as it should be.https://mammasmysteriskajukebox.bandcamp.com/album/jjulius-vol-2 \n\n\n\nCATE KENNAN is a composer and recording artist from Los Angeles who writes melodic music on synthesizers and other instruments. SUMMARY:QUEER HORROR NIGHTS present: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
DESCRIPTION:Strictly ADULTS 18+ only! \n\n\n\nQueer Horror Nights returns for a thrilling Halloween Monsters Ball hosted by Loose Willis and Token Homo with interval gore show from Co Kendrah. ‘Bring your freak’ with a costume\, kink and fetish-friendly dress code. A very late bar will keep you monsters moist. \n\n\n\nDirected by Frank Oz with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by LGBTQ+ legend Howard Ashman\, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is a queer cult classic. \n\n\n\nThe film about a hapless florist and his flesh-eating plant features an iconic cast\, monumental songs\, several hardcore kinks\, and boundary-pushing special effects. Deemed too transgressive at test screenings\, the finale was dramatically changed before its 1986 cinema release to create a ‘happy’ heteronormative ending. \n\n\n\nQueer Horror Nights is proud to present the 2012 Director’s Cut which reinstates the film’s original\, outrageous climax: a plant-based apocalypse with an additional 10 minutes of show-stopping footage. If movie monsters are the queer disrupters of heteronormativity\, then the Director’s Cut of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is a radical re-edit where queer monstrosity wins (and Audrey is the ultimate ally). \n\n\n\nHALLOWEEN MONSTERS BALL: Experience LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS with drag king Loose Willis (SLAY STATION\, FIST CLUB)\, film fanatic Token Homo (BAR TRASH)\, and sublime drag creature Co Kendrah (TORTURE GARDEN\, RECON CABARET). \n\n\n\nDRESS CODE: This is a costume\, kink and fetish-friendly event\, so come dressed for Halloween\, or gear-up to watch the film in your kink and fetish attire (just cover your bum & bits!). Regular clothes are fine too… Changing facilities available from 10pm. \n\n\n\n• 10PM: Drinks\, Halloween fun\, ‘Photo-My-Freak’ booth\, & changing rooms• 11:30PM: Pre-show + ‘Carnival of The Creatures’ (with prizes for best look!)• MIDNIGHT: Film + Interval gore show• 2AM: Close \n\n\n\nQueer Horror Nights creates horror cinema events across London.
