SUMMARY:The Great Belzoni – The Case Of The Disappearance Of The Oggetto D’Arte From The British Museum
DESCRIPTION:After last year’s SELL OUT run – we welcome back The Great Belzoni who has a new dastardly crime to solve… \nFrom the pen of local writer Loz Keal\, who also wrote last Christmas’ brilliant Robin Hood\, the Pantomime\, we are proud to present this hilarious spoof whodunit set in London in 1928 at the height of ‘Egyptian Mummy Fever.’ \nThe morning the British Museum is due to unveil some new exhibits\, The Great Belzoni notices the Book of the Dead has been stolen. \nOnly a privileged few have had access; who could have done it…? Trusted museum curator Gussy… or perhaps the Lady Deep-Pockets\, or the socialite Michelle Willmer-Teresa-Forbes Tweedie… surely not ‘honest-as-the-day-is-long’ Sidney Salt…? \nThere’s only one way to find out… join us and watch as The Great Belzoni reveals all! \n \nSeating will be unallocated\, cabaret style.

The show is a blend of musical comedy and stand-up\, freestyling seamlessly from one act to another with the guests stepping out of their comfort zone and do what they don’t normally do. Sometimes musicians dare to tell jokes and comedians attempt to sing and the results can be unexpectedly bonkers or surprising! \nBorn in Romania during the communist era\, Dragos developed a deep appreciation for Western European entertainment\, which inspired his journey into the world of comedy and acting. Dragos dedicated his 30s to crafting several successful sitcoms and comedy series for the country’s leading TV networks. His groundbreaking work on ‘The Block of Flats’ earned him widespread acclaim\, with the series winning the prestigious Best Sitcom award in 2002 and achieving remarkable viewership figures comparable to major sporting events. \nIn 2017\, Dragos embarked on a new chapter of his career by relocating to the U.K. to pursue his dream of creating comedy and music for a broader international audience. His stage musical comedy show\, ‘All Aboard!’\, premiered at the Leicester Square Theatre and enjoyed a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe\, where it was lauded as a “Highly Recommended show” by The Fringe Review. \nDragos’s talent extends beyond comedy\, as evidenced by his notable appearances in acclaimed television series such as “THE POWER” on Amazon Prime\, and “RAIN DOGS\,” a BBC/HBO production\, in which he brought to life the character of Konstantin\, the mischievous owner of a peep show in Soho.. \nA passionate musician\, Dragos showcases his skills on the piano and guitar\, blending music with comedy to create a unique and captivating artistic fusion. Guided by the philosophy that “Age is just a number”\, Dragos remains steadfast in his belief that unwavering dedication to one’s passions is the true path to success. With his infectious energy\, comedic prowess\, and boundless creativity he continues to leave an indelible mark on the world of entertainment. \nGUESTS: \n30th May \nKatie Norris: winner of the Musical Comedy Award 2023 and one half of Norris & Parker \nPresident Obonjo – well-established character\, the dictator-president of the Lafta Republic \n12th July \nEmili Cairns – finalist Musical Comedy Awards 2023 & accordion player \nAndy Zapp – musician/comedian\, from straight stand-up to clownery\, buffoonery\, excellent harmonica player \nDATES: Thurs 30th May\, Fri  12 July\, Fri 4th of October\,  Fri 1st November @ 8pm \nVENUE:            PIANO SMITHFIELD\, 14 Long Ln\, Barbican\, London EC1A 9PN \nDOORS:           7PM SHOW 8PM \nSHOW RUNS: 2 HOURS INCLUDING 15 MINUTE BREAK \nTICKET LINK:  is.gd/75Zl7w

SUMMARY:Jude Kelly: Shakespeare’s Women
DESCRIPTION:Following on from recently directing the sold out world premiere play reading of ‘Shakespeare’s Women’ at The Globe\, Jude Kelly takes us on a journey of exploration of some of the great female characters in The Bard’s works. \nWho were the real-life inspirations behind these characters\, what do they teach us about gender politics in 16th Century society\, and how contemporary are the themes and challenges that these women faced? From Juliet to Desdemona\, Portia to Ophelia\, Lady M to Kate Shrew \, Jude will demonstrate the huge emotional power and complexity these of these famous female roles. \nThis fascinating evening is more than just a presentation\, it’s a conversation – indeed a provocation – by the founder of WOW Global to discuss how we can best shape the future of gender-equality by learning from the past.

SUMMARY:Comedy Club 4 Kids
DESCRIPTION:Since 2005\, the Comedy Club 4 Kids has been getting the best stand-ups\, sketch acts and cabaret stars from the international circuit to do their thing for an audience of children (aged 6+) and their families… but without the rude bits! Almost 20 years later\, the company has expanded from one London residency to being countrywide\, running shows and workshops all over the UK from Peebles to Portsmouth\, even producing a book on how to write and perform stand-up\, and hosting our own Radio Nonsense podcast to bring the siillies to families all over the world. The show is family friendly\, but without any patronising idiocy. In fact\, it’s just like a normal comedy club\, but it’s on in the day\, kids are allowed in\, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of the entire audience claiming to be called Bob. \nSuitable for ages 6+. \nAdults to sit with children in their party (and help explain anything they get stuck on). \nGroup bookings to contain at least one adult for every three kids. \n  \nQUOTES: \n“A highlight for children in recent years\, giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy… with the fun\, rowdy feel of a real comedy club” – The Guardian \n“An essential treat.” – Fest Magazine \n“Absolutely hilarious.” – The Yorkshire Times \n“The ethos is just right” – The Daily Telegraph \n“The perfect way to entertain the whole family.” – Three Weeks \n“All in all this show was great.” – The Scotsman \n“Comedy Club 4 Kids has stand-up sets from grown-up\, high-quality acts who perform their usual sets\, just without the swearing or rude bits.” – The Independent \n“…plenty of full on laughs and tears of enjoyment from parents” Families Edinburgh \nTickets \nGeneral £12 \nFamily Ticket £40 \n(Admits 2 adults and 2 children or 1 adult and 3 children) \n \nAbigoliah Schamaun \n \nA former NYC yogi now living in London\, Abigoliah is a disarmingly honest comedian with a tender heart and a wicked sense of humour. A charmingly chatty comic\, she’s a deft compere\, establishing just the right convivial tone for any gig.\n‘Her cheeky honesty is completely disarming and delightful’ (Chortle)\n‘A fresh and quirky voice’ (The Herald Sun\, Melbourne).\n‘Hilarious’ (Three Weeks) \nEd Petrie \n \nFinalist in the 2003 Channel 4 So You Think You’re Funny competition\, and guest on Smack The Pony and Green Wing. Ed has since found a home with CBBC. He is best known for the Ed & Oucho shows\, Going All Over The Place and Marrying Mum & Dad. \nMatt Green \n \nMatt Green was born and brought up in Yorkshire\, although lost the accent for career reasons. He now lives in London\, also for career reasons. \nHe has worked extensively as a comedian\, actor and writer for more than a decade\, performing on screen\, on radio and in venues up and down the UK and across the world. Over the last few years he has also found fame online with his short satirical videos. \n“A stand-up audience’s dream” – Three Weeks \n“A talented storyteller… side-splitting…hilarious… Green leaves the audience wanting more” – Remotegoat \n“Green has taken a mountain of comedy gold and succeeded admirably into transfiguring it into a set that is sure to dazzle…a must see.” – Views From The Gods

SUMMARY:Meditations and Repetitions
DESCRIPTION:The abstract works of Buffy Kimm and Doris Ernst are very personal and connected to the context in which they are created. \n  \nBoth artists are collectors of found objects\, often from natural or urban spaces. These chance encounters with old\, weathered things that have been discarded or disregarded can trigger reflections and inspiration. There is depth in simplicity inviting viewers to interpret freely and embrace imagination beyond the obvious. The final creations of both artists differs greatly\, yet the process of their making is equally significant. \nMeditations and Repetitions is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects\, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through a series of group and solo exhibitions.

SUMMARY:Vladimir 518: Rethinking Architectural Narratives in Czech Architecture 1958 -1989
DESCRIPTION:Organised as part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture\, this event will see Czech visual artist and musician Vladimir 518 discussing his seminal publication ‚Architecture 58 – 89‘. \nWhile post-war architecture from the former Eastern Bloc is highly regarded by foreign architects and students\, its perception in the Czech Republic is marked by considerable ambiguity. Often\, it is negatively labelled as communist architecture of low value\, deemed highly ideological\, and seen as in need of replacement. Utilising two significant milestones—Expo 58 in Brussels and the 1989 Velvet Revolution— Vladimir 518 will reassess the Czech and Slovak architectural landscape during this period with the aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation in order to reset the perspective of the general public and preserve those landmarks for future generations. \n  \n‚The overwhelming body of so-called communist architecture has little in common with this ideology in terms of its formal aspects\, yet a layer of negative emotions and misunderstanding still clings to it. Unfortunately\, in the long term it has been impossible to find a healthy relationship with this now historical architecture\, which is why one important building after another is disappearing from the streets of our cities. If we as a society fail to preserve at least what is left of the quality buildings from the beginning of the second half of the 20th century\, we will erase a piece of our own history and cultural memory once and for all.‘  Vladimir 518 \n  \nOrganised by the Czech Centre as part of London Festival of Architecture 2024. \nImage: Photo: Vitkovice Archive a.s.

Not in Switzerland\, where women still don’t have the vote (and would not get it until 1971) and are legally confined to kitchen and household. Bette\, the star of a regional TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n“The Good Women” is a new\, funny\, bold and romantic play written\, performed and directed by an all-female team from the UK\, Ireland and Europe. It is inspired by a true story and brings an overlooked chapter of women’s history to the stage. \n⭐⭐⭐⭐ \n“Good Women Arts’ poignant two-hander depicts burgeoning love against a backdrop of political struggle. Simply staged\, the romcom plot balances witty humour\, social injustice & emancipation” – Fringe Biscuit \n“The Good Women is a play on a fringe and festival scale which thinks big. It tells a nuanced story against a historic backdrop. The story and characters have room to breathe and develop.”– Salterton Arts Review \n“The two characters are very effectively played. It is an encouragement to continue the fight for change.”– British Theatre Guide

SUMMARY:The Kraken attacks Leicester Square
DESCRIPTION:London commuters got the fright of their lives this morning as The Kraken crashed through the ground into Leicester Square\, taking an innocent civilian hostage and dangling them 25ft in the air. \n  \nScreams and cries from the petrified mortal have been heard echoing around the square all morning\, and confirmed reports now reveal that they are trapped within a red telephone box that The Beast ripped from the ground in the early hours. There’s no saying how long the malevolent creature will remain\, but the captive continues to desperately beg for the public’s urgent help.    \nWhat can you do? Well\, the story goes that the only way to repel the darkness of The Kraken is for an army of brave souls to snap The Beast with their camera flash\, to deny it the darkness it craves… So locals\, tourists and commuters are being urged to head to the scene\, where mysterious black envelopes are being distributed\, each containing a reward for those brave enough to face The Beast.  \nCourageous souls will also be rewarded with two-for-one Kraken Perfect Storm cocktails at All Bar One\, Leicester Square.  \nThe Kraken’s attack on Leicester Square follows a string of sightings up and down the country where The Beast has caused untold terror in Glasgow\, Birmingham and Brighton. The legendary Bullring torn to shreds. The Duke of Wellington attacked in Glasgow. Even Brighton’s beloved pier has been smashed to smithereens. There’s no saying what or who The Kraken could destroy next if left to its malevolent devices. Please help! \nFor further information please head to @krakenrumuk on Instagram.

We believe that music can build bridges and start conversations. \nFor our workshops we invite participants from partner charities to develop their skills as storytellers led by an experienced facilitator and in collaboration with our musicians. Work created here can be presented in the concerts. \n“By the end of each performance an intimate energy lingers in the air. There is a sense that the boundary between performer and audience has been dissolved… everyone in the room has been witness to something unique and transformative.” – Peter\, audience member \nPromoted by NW Live Arts. \nSupported by Arts Council England.
