SUMMARY:Lower Marsh Lates…At The Movies
DESCRIPTION:Lower Marsh Lates… At The Movies is a new monthly (and free) open-air cinema experience in Waterloo that will screen the best of Sing-A-Long films.\n\n\n\n\n\nThese outdoor events will capture the spirit of Eurovision by bringing people together for fun summer evenings worth singing (at the top of your lungs!) about. The neighbourhood’s collective vocal cords will be warmed up ahead of the film thanks to live entertainers from the VAULT festival.\n\n\n\n\n\nLower Marsh Market traders will be on hand with tasty food options\, while independent bars along Lower Marsh will have various drinks deals to keep larynxes lubricated. At The Glitch\, there will be a 2-4-1 cocktail offer (from 5 pm to 7 pm); at Greensmiths\, moviegoers can get two Aperol Spritzes for £12. Those dressing up (as a character from the evening’s film) can get a 20% discount at the Vaulty Towers bar.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe launch night will centre around a screening of Mamma Mia! – the multi-award-winning film based on the songs of ABBA.\nIn keeping with the theme\, entertainers will welcome the crowd with group games and singing exercises.\n\n\n\n\n\nEurovision 2023 might only be for one day in May\, but ‘Lower Marsh Lates… At The Movies will ensure Londoners can say\n\n\n\n\n\n“Thank you for the music” for the rest of the summer.

SUMMARY:APOSTILLE + MARINA ZISPIN
DESCRIPTION:APOSTILLE is a man who’s torn through enough systems to know the difference between gesture and meaning. Alongside running his own DIY record label\, Night School Records\, Glasgow native Michael Kasparis has previously made forays into the realm of hardcore punk with his group Anxiety and The Lowest Form. Throughout all this\, his solo electronic venture Apostille has continued to evolve with each twist and turn of the world. What started off as a quest to whip up a mood and force that into a song has steadily become more of a mission in communication. The third Apostille album\, ‘Prisoners Of Love And Hate’\, is released on Night School on September 22nd. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://apostille.bandcamp.com/album/prisoners-of-love-and-hate\n\n\n\n\nMARINA ZISPIN\, aka synth pop apparitions Bianca Scout and Martyn Reid\, have been haunting the shores of Newcastle/London since forming Marina Zispin in the summer of 2018. Together\, they occupy the infinite twilight space that exists between fantasy and reality. Juxtaposing the sacred and mundane\, they transform the selected minutia of their everyday existence into the totems and litanies that comprise their stream of conscious anthems of interdimensional melancholia. Marina Zispin released their debut 12” on Night School in September 2023.

SUMMARY:Pay Day Parties at Signal Brewery
DESCRIPTION:With the cost-of-living crisis threatening to ruin summer and the UK beer industry\, Signal Brewery is launching a series of Pay Day Parties to keep (literal and metaphorical) spirits high in South London. \n\n\n\nTaking a “glass half full” approach to the current climate\, Signal Brewery (which sits on the border of the Croydon and Sutton Boroughs) is launching a programme of fun\, affordable events that include monthly Pay Day Parties. \n\n\n\nThese will see the Taproom extend onto the forecourt to become the go-to place for an affordable\, quality outdoor drinking experience in South London this summer. \n\n\n\nTaking place on the last Saturday of each month (from 12 pm to 7 pm)\, tickets cost just £5 per person and include a free pint of beer and slice of VENTI pizza on arrival. \n\n\n\nHappy Hours will run between 1 pm and 4 pm – during which a pint of beer will cost just £4 (well below the London average!). A 25% discount on all other drinks (including wine and spirits) will also run during these hours\, further helping to keep costs down. \n\n\n\nFree beer tastings\, led by the expert team\, will take place (inside the brewery itself) throughout the day\, giving guests the opportunity to learn more about (and sample) the range of beers brewed onsite. \n\n\n\nAs Signal is also a small batch producer of Vodka\, Rum and an award-winning Gin\, guests will also be able to enjoy cocktails throughout the day while a DJ playing club classics will keep the party spirit flowing until the early evening.

SUMMARY:BEAUTY IN EVERY SMILE
DESCRIPTION:Smile Train UK – the world’s largest cleft charity – have released a series of unfiltered images celebrating the beauty and diversity in smiles\, to support their new nationwide campaign\, Beauty in Every Smile. \n\n\n\nCaptured by London-based photographer Fanny Beckman\, who is renowned for using art to raise awareness of social injustice and inequalities\, the images feature 12 cleft-affected people from across the UK\, who have come to love their smiles after facing stigma\, mistreatment and/or discrimination as a result of their facial difference. \n\n\n\nLaunched in time for World Smile Day® (6 October)\, the images are being showcased on giant 2-metre high panels in a public exhibition on London’s busy South Bank\, from 9am on Thursday 5 October to 4pm on Saturday 7 October. \n\n\n\nCommenting on the exhibition images\, Fanny Beckman\, says: “Beauty in Every Smile has truly been a dream project to work on. Smile Train UK’s work is very much in line with my ethos and what I want to achieve with my photography: to raise awareness of stories that historically have been untold. Art is a powerful tool to use to start conversations\, and I’ve been fortunate to meet many inspiring people during the photoshoots. I am grateful to all the models for sharing their experiences\, and for removing the stigma around being born with a cleft.”  \n\n\n\nA cleft is a facial difference that occurs when a baby’s lip and/or mouth do not fuse together during pregnancy. One in 700 people are born with a cleft in the UK each year – and every three minutes a baby is born with a cleft globally. \n\n\n\nSadly\, research recently carried out by Smile Train UK – in partnership with Censuswide – found that over a third (34%) of people living with a facial difference in the UK (including cleft) have been discriminated against or have heard negative comments said about them. Three in ten (30%) have also been bullied. As a result\, more than a quarter have felt self-conscious (29%)\, unhappy (28%)\, embarrassed (28%)\, unwanted (26%) – and even depressed (27%). \n\n\n\nAnd these feelings of self-consciousness don’t just impact people with a facial difference. According to Smile Train UK’s survey\, over half (53%) of the wider public are yet to fully love their smile. And sadly\, only 18% of the nation think their smile is beautiful. \n\n\n\nInterestingly\, approximately a quarter (24%) of the public surveyed said they would love their smile more if they were told it was beautiful. And for one in ten\, a greater understanding of differences and uniqueness in society would have a positive impact on the way they view their smile too. \n\n\n\nIn response to these findings\, Smile Train has launched the Beauty in Every Smile campaign\, to inspire more ‘smile inclusivity’ in the UK and to encourage people to see the beauty in their own unique smiles. \n\n\n\nSmile Train UK is championing smile inclusivity\, by encouraging more people to see the beauty in the smiles of others – as well as their own. Because there’s Beauty in Every Smile. Visit www.smiletrain.org.uk/beautyineverysmile to learn more.

SUMMARY:THE MAKE-UP
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm and DHP present… \n\n\n\nTHE MAKE-UPThursday 5 OctoberThe Dome\, 2A Dartmouth Park Hill\, Tufnell Park\, N19 5QH7pm | £25 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/q880da4b245b \n\n\n\nTHE MAKE-UP\, from Washington\, DC\, are a renowned group of revolutionary malcontents for whom the tedious rules of rock mean very little. First appearing in 1995\, The Make–Up arose like a demon of righteousness\, striking out for aesthetic correctitude\, fearless non sequitur\, communal enthusiasm\, and the sacred business of “show.” Inspired by R&B\, Gospel music\, Yeh-Yeh\, and Rock ‘n’ Roll\, The Make–Up was strange then and still strange. \n\n\n\nThey don’t jibe with the garage conservatism or the po’ faced blandness of commercial “indie rock.” They are a “band without a country.” Still\, they are sorely missed for their performances\, which were rumoured to feature: matching outfits\, Farfisa organ strikes\, secular sermonizing\, call-and-response vocals\, and calamitous guitar fuzz over a sea bed of rhythm-rubble. \n\n\n\nThe Make-Up were prolific\, toured the world\, and recorded lots of 45s and “long-playing” records before they submerged out of sight in 2001 A.D. Since then\, the group members have lectured\, healed the sick\, banged on cans\, and generally inspired in other ways\, but now come together once again to celebrate their gestalt\, their unique chemistry\, and the songs they created. They are something special. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://makeup.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:Ed Byrne: Tragedy Plus Time
DESCRIPTION:One of the UK’s favourite TV household names returns to the stage with a brand-new show as he heads on the road in autumn. \n\n\n\nFrom the quote attributed to Mark Twain\, humour is defined as Tragedy Plus Time. Come and join one of our leading laugh specialists as he tests that formula by mining the most tragic event in his life for laughs. \n\n\n\nWith his TV career now in its third decade\, Ed has regularly appeared on the likes of QI\, Mock The Week\, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled\, The Pilgrimage\, Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay\, Dara & Ed’s Big Adventure\, The Graham Norton Show and Have I Got News For You\, as well as hosting Live At The Apollo and Comic Relief Bake Off. He was recently seen as a contestant on BBC One’s Celebrity Best Home Cook (where he made it to show 5 out of 8 – not bad!) and he has also won (yes\, won!) celebrity versions of both The Chase and Pointless! \n\n\n\nKnown for his passion for the outdoors (hill walking and mountaineering are major hobbies)\, Ed can be seen turning his presenting skills to factual broadcasting in BBC Two’s Volcano Live\, World’s Most Dangerous Roads(where he spent two weeks driving through Siberia) and Into The Wild with Gordon Buchanan. \n\n\n\nWith legions of fans both in the UK and abroad\, Ed remains the observational stand-up to see.

SUMMARY:Zach Blas: CULTUS
DESCRIPTION:arebyte presents CULTUS\, a new solo project by artist Zach Blas. Co-commissioned by arebyte\, London\, and Secession\, Vienna\, this immersive multimedia exhibition explores religious belief\, artificial intelligence\, and the California tech industry. \n\n\n\nFeaturing AI-generated imagery\, text\, and sound alongside computer graphics and motion-capture performance\, CULTUS is the second instalment of Blas’s Silicon Traces trilogy\, a series of moving image installations that contends with the beliefs\, fantasies\, and histories influential to Silicon Valley’s visions of the future.  \n\n\n\nCULTUS addresses a burgeoning AI religiosity in the tech industry\, considering the ways in which artificial intelligence is imbued with god-like powers and marshalled to serve beliefs of judgement and transcendence\, extraction and immortality\, pleasure and punishment\, individual freedom and cult devotion. While AI religious organisations like Way of the Future church centre around the emergence of coming AI gods\, CULTUS offers a different perspective: AI gods are already amongst us\, actively worshipped and served. \n\n\n\nCULTUS is a techno-religious computational system–a god generator\, a holy engine –that invokes a pantheon of AI gods\, whose prophets share their divine teachings\, rituals\, and symbologies. These AI deities are Expositio\, AI god of desire and exposure; Iudicium\, AI god of automation and judgement; Lacrimae\, AI god of tears and extraction; and Eternus\, AI god of immortal life.  \n\n\n\nCULTUS reimagines Elizabethan mathematician and occultist John Dee’s Holy Table\, an esoteric device of sigils\, seals\, and a crystal ball\, with which Dee communed with angels to gain access to God. Blas reconfigures the Holy Table at an immersive scale\, transforming the entire space into an invocation site. An illuminated sigil spreads across the gallery. At its centre\, a black-mirror altarpiece displays video of morphing symbols and an esoteric diagram. Pyramidal plinths bear Spanish Ticklers holding ornate vials of bodily fluid offerings. Chained\, etched tablets share the lyrics to invocation songs\, encouraging visitors to sing along. As music resounds\, prophets of the AI gods manifest in a giant orb suspended above\, delivering sermons that beckon us to serve.  \n\n\n\nCULTUS is the Latin word for “worship”\, which articulates the act solicited from those who encounter the installation. As such\, visitors may find themselves caught in acts of devotion to gods they did not know they already served. However\, a sacrilegious presence manifests within\, a Heretic that incites shattering counter-beliefs.  \n\n\n\nThe exhibition features a wide-ranging cast of singers and performers\, including micha cárdenas\, Ricardo Dominguez\, Nick Granata\, Susu Laroche\, Susanne Sachsse\, Aga Ujma\, and Izzy Yon. \n\n\n\nCULTUS is generously supported by a 2023 Connections Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada\, Jason Kemper\, and Thor Perplies.  \n\n\n\nThe work forms part of arebyte’s 2023/24 programme The Body\, The Mind\, The Soul\, which questions the complex nature of humanity in the realm of technological progression. The exhibition is accompanied by a booklet featuring texts by arebyte curator Rebecca Edwards and anthropologist and folklorist Amy Hale.
