SUMMARY:Turbans and Tales Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning photography duo Amit and Naroop as they discuss the story of the turban with the launch of their new book\, ‘Turbans and Tales’. \nThe turban is worn by all three major faiths of the Indian subcontinent and has been a symbol of status and respect in the region for centuries. The British Army in India played a significant role in utilising the turban in military uniforms and ultimately informing styles currently worn today. British royalty and officers also donned the turban themselves over the years. \nThe colour\, shape and style can tell us a lot about the wearer. They vary from the blue towering turbans of the Akali Nihung warriors\, ornate layers worn by maharajas\, folded khaki turbans worn during both World Wars to more modern iterations. \nAmit and Naroop focus in on the Sikh turban and track its evolution. The book features contemporary portraits of British and American Sikhs from the duo’s recent exhibition\, in addition to archival photographs that chart the history of the turban. \nThere will be a book signing with the authors after the event. Refreshments will be provided. \nAdmission: Free – Book in advance https://www.nam.ac.uk/whats-on/turbans-and-tales \n

SUMMARY:Rana Begum In Conversation with Anne Barlow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively evening with one of the most exciting artists working in Britain today\, Rana Begum\, in conversation with Anne Barlow\, Director of Tate St Ives\, who hosted Rana’s solo exhibition in 2018. The talk will coincide with Rana’s exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery Is This Tomorrow? (14 Feb-12 May). \nThe work of London-based artist Rana Begum distills spatial and visual experience into ordered form. Through her refined language of Minimalist abstraction\, Begum blurs the boundaries between sculpture\, painting and architecture. Her visual language draws from the urban landscape as well as geometric patterns from traditional Islamic art and architecture. Light is fundamental to her process. Her works absorb and reflect varied densities of light to produce an experience for the viewer that is both temporal and sensorial. \nAbout Rana Begum\nBorn in Bangladesh in 1977\, Rana Begum lives and works in London. In 1999\, she graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design and\, in 2002\, gained an MFA in Painting from Slade School of Fine Art. Recent and forthcoming exhibitions include: Is This Tomorrow? Through our programme of events on arts\, culture and education we act as a catalyst for the discovery of the diverse arts and cultures of Asia and the Asian diaspora\, and serve as a bridge of understanding between the UK and Asia.

DESCRIPTION:Join West End performers Sharon Sexton (The Commitments\, Billy Elliot\, The Liza Minnelli Story) & Rob Fowler (The Rocky Horror Show\, Jesus Christ Superstar\, We Will Rock You) for a very special evening where they sing the hits of their highly praised duets album “VISION OF YOU” Live at The Space! \nThe pair received rave reviews for their onstage chemistry & vocal flair\, in Jim Steinman’s smash hit show\, Bat Out of Hell The Musical\, where they originated the roles of Falco & Sloane. Described as an electric force that brought “an inescapable joie de vivre to the show” (culture whisper)\, their heartwrenching ballads became a fan highlight and a “stunning\, unexpected showstopper” (Britishtheatre.com) \nThe Falco’s rollercoaster relationship was the inspiration behind this beautiful set list\, which has been carefully selected and arranged by musical director Steve Corley\, to take the audience through the stages of a young love that comes up against the usual curveballs life throws in the way & fights to survive. \nPerforming an eclectic mix of genres from musical theatre\, folk\, pop to rock\, book in to hear a “flawless mix of operatic projection & sexy intimacy that will linger long & lovingly in your memory” (Britishtheatre.com) Don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:The Rhythm and Booze Project Bermondsey Burns Night (Open Whisky Bar)
DESCRIPTION:The boys from the Rhythm and Booze Project are ready to host their first ever Burns Night. Felipe and Paul are going to bring you a night full of whisky\, music\, mischief\, and maybe even a little bit of poetry from the Scottish Bard. \nTaking place in the intimate Crol and Co in Bermondsey\, this is a combination gig and whisky tasting\, featuring an OPEN WHISKY BAR (you read that right) and the boys doing what they do best as a gritty duo. \nOh\, and there will be vegetarian haggis canapés. They’re going to be delicious. \nThere are only limited spaces to this one of a kind event\, so book now! \nHere’s the duo’s official bio: \nThe Rhythm and Booze Project features Felipe and Paul\, a duo fusing live music and whisky through gigs\, tasting events\, and multimedia experiences.\nThe project was born during a 2012 pilgrimage to the whisky capital of Islay\, when Felipe and Paul played in bars and hotels in exchange for a meal\, a bed\, and healthy drams of whisky. \nRegular collaborations since then\, including tours in the UK\, United States\, and South America\, led to the creation of The Rhythm and Booze Project\, which combines Felipe’s and Paul’s extensive background as professional touring musicians\, event producers\, and passionate fans of whisky in all forms. \nAs a musical outfit\, the band incorporates roots\, folk\, and blues music in a uniquely gritty mix of its own\, blending hypnotic grooves with raucous energy and irresistible showmanship. \nFor their whisky tasting events\, Felipe and Paul merge performance\, live music\, and multi-sensory experiences. Past projects encompass blues and whisky tasting events for Islay’s Caol Ila distillery\, a tasting event series in Edinburgh that saw live music from local musicians actually alter the taste of whisky itself\, and intimate masterclasses with Lagavulin’s distillery manager. \nWith five professional degrees between them\, Felipe and Paul have an academic background to match. Felipe wrote his Masters degree thesis on sustainable distillation on Islay (conducting field interviews after Islay’s Feis Ile whisky festival)\, while Paul has just completed his PhD in the history of jazz drumming and the drum kit in New Orleans. \nFelipe is also a leading writer about all aspects of whisky for top industry publications including the websites distiller.com and scotchwhisky.com\, and also writes about whisky for Forbes.com. \nDISCLAIMER: We’ll turn away anyone (with no refund) who shows up drunk or not in a fit state to appreciate the music and whisky. You’ve been warned.

SUMMARY:Oberon White: winegod - Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Multidisciplinary performance & contemporary queer ritual \n…The deification of what cannot be said\,\nThe familial wound\,\nThe hole in the head\,\nThe tunnel\, in the hollow\, in the hole\, in the gap\,\nThe following back to tangled spools of thread… \nQueer performance artist Oberon White presents a contemporary ritual to the ancient world’s suppressed queer deity. The Roarer\, The Liberator\, The God Who Comes\, just some of the epithets of one of humanity’s most potent archetypes\, Dionysos. Dionysos is the ultimate liminal god\, transcending borders between nations\, genders\, even life and death. \nThrough a language of experimental electronic music\, virtuosic vocals and original text\, audiences are invited to share in a communal experience. winegod sheds light on the ancientness of queer identity and explores our unity as living fleshy beings on an increasingly fragile globe. winegod is an invitation to engage with ecstasy\, epiphany and liberation. \nBull\, you jumped into milk.\nRam\, you fell into milk.\nYou have wine as your blessed honour\nAnd below the earth there await you the same rituals as the other blessed ones.’\n– Gold Burial Leaf\, Pelinna in Thessaly\, late fourth century BC \nExcerpts of winegod have been shown throughout its development at: CFS Soho\, The Glory\, Cafe Cairo\, VFD\, SPACE gallery Hackney\, DIY Space for London\, Cube Microplex\, Dalston Superstore \nFor past work: \n‘I have never seen anything like it’ ★★★★\n– This Is Cabaret\n‘A masterclass in precision and his craft is phenomenal.’\n– Scotsgay\n‘Interesting as Hell’\n– Londoncitynights \nOberon White is a queer\, Welsh performance artist\, musician and cabaret performer. A feral child of different arts practices they metamorphose between the roles of shaman\, drag artist\, clown\, as well as classical and experimental musician. They perform in venues and festivals for live art\, queer cabaret\, experimental theatre and music in the UK and abroad. Oberon White is a graduate of Trinity Laban Conservatoire and current Roundhouse Resident Artist.

SUMMARY:Lilia Mazurkevich Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:M1 Fine Art – Greenwich is proud to present Lilia Mazurkevich’s eagerly anticipated solo exhibition. \nLilia Mazurkevich spent many years training extensively in some of Eastern Europe’s most respected art establishments. Following this training\, during her professional early years in the late 1980s\, she worked as an illustrator for national Ukrainian newspapers from her nearby home country of Belarus. This led to many lucrative deals with publishing houses across the globe throughout the ‘90s and ‘00s\, creating works of art for the covers and content of internationally distributed novels and research-focused textbooks; something which\, for the first time in her life\, saw her leave her beloved homeland behind and integrate fully into the western world. \nAs a result of her growing worldwide reputation in the years surrounding the turn of the century\, the canvases released to the market from Mazurkevich’s studio became highly sought after by collectors and two distinct styles began to emerge and become defined. \nBy 2012\, Mazurkevich’s astronomical rise in popularity on the commercial art scene had seen her works accepted into the Phantasten Museum in Vienna\, Austria; she had also been shortlisted at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition and the BP Portrait Award at The National Portrait Gallery\, both in London\, UK. \nAt this exhibition\, there will be on display an array of creatures from Lilia’s ‘Day’ series\, including never-before-seen originals and a brand new collection of limited edition prints. Browse the art gallery at your leisure and learn more about Lilia Mazurkevich by speaking to our knowledgeable and friendly art consultants.
